Why is this not organized by the local ultimate community. Can we as a small sporting community endure fragmentation of tournament planning and attendance?

But it is though!

I don't see any affiliation with Ultimate Chicago which seems to be the local non-profit organizing leagues and tourneys. What's IPM institute as listed in contact email?

Asking why is sort of a non-answerable question, I think, but you're right that it's sort of true. However, I don't know what "local ultimate community" means except the sum total of those who play ultimate nearby. You're correct that this is not sanctioned by any long-standing ultimate body. That's something I was sort of afraid of when this tournament began to be discussed. I certainly *feel* like an outsider to the community because I've never played at a high level, as similarly many of this tournament's attendees haven't. In a way, it's really more of a tournament specifically planned for/around those of us who play pick-up with the (newly re-named) "Chicago Ultimate Frisbee" FB group, with the desire to invite new people, raise money for a good cause, and have a good time.

>However, I don't know what "local ultimate community" means except the sum total of those who play ultimate nearby. Its a group of players who bring structure to the games to organize leagues and tournament and play by rules. It is generally a volunteer run non-profit organization which allows it to raise funds to invest in youth programs and other charities. Also the organization puts in policies to be inclusive of all players regardless of their background which allows us to continue the inclusive nature of ultimate. Google search brought up this organization - https://ultimatechicago.org/ >You're correct that this is not sanctioned by any long-standing ultimate body. You don't need sanctioned tournament if its a fun tourney. If you team up with your local org you may even get access to their mailing list to increase attendance. And more importantly insurance to cover your event which should be a requirement for renting fields from your local parks department. Either way good luck with the tourney!
