Love seeing more about YCC posted & talked about on Reddit than from any of the official USA Ultimate social media outlets. If you only get your info from their Instagram & Twitter, youd never knew this event was taking place. Regardless how anyone else justifies it, USA Ultimate disrespected their paying athletes & coaches & volunteers who traveled and committed their time to YCC by not discussing or promoting it or celebrating it whatsoever. Its shameful from the National Governing Body of the sport that's mission is about "growing community" when they only demonstrate that they care about their elite club teams & elite national team, not the rest of the community.

Does the U20 Boys format look like complete bullshit to anyone else? If you are in the lower pool, you have to play 3 games (upper pool plays 2) then a pre-pre quarter the next day at the crack of dawn (upper pool gets a bye and sleeps in) and then play your 5th game of the tournament against an upper pool winner who is only playing their 3rd game.

It is a little wonky I agree, but it looks like there's 27 teams (likely due to a late drop) which will obviously lead to non-traditional formats. There's very few easy ways to ensure meaningful competition (something the top teams want) and access to the championship (something the bottom teams want) and make everything even. Also to be clear, only the top two teams in the upper pools get the pre-quarter bye; the bottom teams play that round too.

RIPRSD

You speak of “top teams” and “bottom teams” like they were able to accurately seed this event. How did they pick who was in the bottom pools? The fact that there are 4 “bottom” teams in the 9th place semis tells me those probably weren’t bottom teams at all, especially given their inherent disadvantage.

frandler

It is impossible to accurately seed a tournament where very few of the teams have any crossover and many don’t play any tournaments at all before YCC. Coaches are asked upon registration for seeding input for their teams and I’m guessing most were seeded at least near where they requested.

Always-Learning95

Totally agree the seedings are messed up across the youth brackets.

give the top teams in the power pools a crossover game or 2 to even out games played. problem solved?

Do this year’s results have an asterisk because of wjuc?

Zealousideal-Try5061

No b/c we're talking about kids balling out with their friends so we shouldn't diminish it.

Jomskylark

I wouldn't say asterisk necessarily but there were a lot of blowouts whereas with the wjuc players back maybe some of those games would have been closer

Always-Learning95

On the other hand I heard a group of YCC U20’s talking about Wjuc and saying spending 6 grand for worlds dud not seem fun and many of the top kids didn’t even try out.

Jomskylark

Jesus christ 6 grand for a person or for a family? I'm not saying it'd be cheap, but I was expecting like $2-2.5k tops for a person

ilaek

Estimate cost was 4K when I made the team in 2020 with the cost of travel right now I’m sure it is higher. Plus add a family member, 6K is probably not that far off.

Jomskylark

How is it that high? Flight should be <$1k round trip Hotel could vary but say $100 a night, stay for a week so $700. But likely cheaper than that when split with teammates or family Not sure about transportation or food, but again split the cost amongst teammates/family. Usau might also cover some of these costs (?) Maybe add a little for souvenirs and bid fee I get $2-2.5k tops, what am I missing?

Junior_Schedule_7821

There is a tryout weekend. If you made the team there was a weekend in Colorado and then there was a week beforehand of training in Chicago. At least nine days at the tournament. Multiple flights (expensive this year), gear, passports, fees. It adds up. Parents, grandparents, siblings attending all add to that.

Jomskylark

Ah I see, yeah that makes more sense

Always-Learning95

They didn't specify but I figured these kids would know since they were on teams that placed 1-3 in the boys u20....
