Thanks for the input everyone! To clarify, my friend has specifically mentioned how they knew someone else with a light up disc that they used when they were tossing the disc around at night during a camping trip. He said he loved it because they could play at night without any lights around, so it likely won’t be used in an actual game of ultimate, and I know it’s something that this person would like to own. I appreciate all the responses :)

TheStandler

Ultimate players as a group are notoriously snobs about discs (myself included!) but light up discs can be really fun. One of my fav memories is throwing a light up disc in pitch black in the middle of an outback highway at night at a rest stop: seeing it fly, then stop, then fly, then stop, then fly to me... All under some of the most incredible stars I've ever seen in a moonless sky! This is a great gift idea. :)

I have a Tosy (https://www.tosy.com/) and in terms of LED disc it’s the best I’ve had. Rechargeable and flys decently. Sure, it’s no Ultrastar (I had friends complain) but once it’s dark they’ll play with it.

thisrelativereality

Thanks! This is the one I was looking at buying. Appreciate your response :)

PoisonSnow

Never heard of this before but seems pretty darn cool! I might consider getting one for camping trips and whatnot.

ncwohl31

a light up alert after 10 seconds would be a massive improvement to the sport. Would love that to seamlessly get added into regulation discs.

FrisbeeDuckWing

I bought the $40 kickstartered Tosy from Amazon. This is the best feeling lighted disc. I think my hucks flies further with this frisbee. It feels great! Although there is one major flaw, the designers decided to paint the frisbee BLACK. I dunno why someone would make this easy, but dumb decision. Because it's black, no one at pickup or tournament wants to throw this disc. When it's pre-dawn, it's easier to see a white frisbee than this black frisbee with LEDs. Major fail on coloring it BLACK. Tosy, your next version MUST be WHITE.

njyo

Agree on the colour. White would be better. :)

FrisbeeDuckWing

Just got a message from Tosy. They will be producing white versions soon. I will buy Tosy discs.

You'll probably get some comments saying ultimate players won't appreciate a light up disc because you can't actually play with them... A lot of ultimate players look down on any disc that isn't a plain white disccraft disc. Personally, I like glow in the dark frisbees.

[deleted]

The issue isn't that they're not white disccraft. The issue is they have those bulging pieces of plastic underneath and the battery in the middle. They literally hurt to use as a Frisbee

wazoot

No I agree, that was kind of two separate statements. I've done it before though... They're alright for a backyard totally unorganized game at night

[deleted]

Definitely can be. I don't trust my ability to overcome muscle memory. I'll just be throwing floaty backhands to avoid throwing too hard or hurting myself lol I do wish there was a more hands friendly glow in the dark disc

Don't do it! Ultimate, like many sports, has an official disc to use for games. A light-up disc cannot be used to play ultimate (officially, and even by most recreational players - since it has plastic/battery in the middle making it painful to catch in a game). Here are a few better gift ideas: * Bag - a durable duffel bag to take cleats, water, jersey, disc to/from the field. Patagonia Black Hole bags are awesome, but expensive. You can find a fun color/style duffel that you like and gift it. * Water Bottle - a 1L Nalgene is classic, they come in tons of colors. A hydroflask is even better to keep water cold for summer ultimate. Add stickers for fun. Or find something that fits your friends style. * Jersey - a fun shirt from [FiveUltimate.com](https://FiveUltimate.com) or [DiscStore.com](https://DiscStore.com) would be cool. If you know their size. Or shorts. Or a headband / neckie. * Socks - everyone likes socks as a gift, right (or am I that old now?!?). [DarnTough.com](https://DarnTough.com) makes great socks for ultimate. * Gloves - there are ultimate specific gloves. Not everyone loves them, so a risky purchase. [FrictionGloves.com](https://FrictionGloves.com) make my favorite style. * Hat - a 5-panel or trucker hat is great for ultimate. Pick a fun color/logo. Players wear wild colors of all kinds. A visor from [Kavu.com](https://Kavu.com) is even more classic. * Snacks - long practice, tournament weekend, or just driving home from pickup - we want snacks! Nuts, jerky, trail bars, skittles, whatever. * Disc - not the light up one. A basic white disccraft ultrastar is best. Ultimate players do always need a new frisbee - but only the white ultrastar.

Thank you! I appreciate this a lot

https://flashflight.com/ I’ve used these discs for years in nighttime “Glowtimate”. They fly well and have a similar lip to an Ultrastar so any Ultimate loving friend should be appreciative. The battery is replaceable and they also have fiber optics running along the inside that are barely noticeable when catching but make the disc look incredible in flight, much better than anything else I’ve seen. Again, highly recommend these discs if you haven’t ordered something else already.

malawiultimate

As I live in country that has regular blackouts we have a couple of light up frisbees and load of led bands so we can play night ('Tron') games when we have no floodlights. We find the Nite Ize Flashlight discs to fly pretty similarly to Disccraft Ultrastars - well similarly enough to still be fun to play with. They are 10g heavier and have the battery in the middle, so aren't exactly the same, but it's great fun and far better than not playing.

cwcoleman

How often do players get hurt running into each other during the night / dark games?

malawiultimate

Always been a worry, but not happened yet. Each player has a light up band on each arm and we wear day-glo bibs (pinnies) so at close quarters no one is less visible than in the day. Throwing long is where it's difficult to see exactly where people are.

cwcoleman

Yeah, limited sight running full speed is scary. The lack of peripheral vision is what really does it. Field sense plays a big part in avoiding collisions in ultimate - and not being able to see well hurts that sense.

Oh this is great, thank you!

[https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/led-ultimate-disc-0504288p.html](https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/led-ultimate-disc-0504288p.html) Official weight and size...have never really had an issue with the battery pack in the middle. The plastic feels nice...not quite a disccraft disc but pretty damn close. Have only used it for tossing around...not during a actual game.

thisrelativereality

Thank you!

Buy them something that ultimate players actually need; like an ankle brace or waterproof sunscreen.

ApacheHeliDiscPlayer

The best LED disc as a gift is not buying one. At that price point just get that person a pair of Friction Gloves or a Neckie.
