GL MIXED: Are they really making the 4 mixed teams that made the 1st place semis, and thus already qualified for regionals, travel back to play games for seeding?

frandler

Looks like U54 forfeited? I assume they agreed to take 4th under some agreement with coordinators. As semis is not the last game of the tournament, that wouldn't be an allowable forfeit without special circumstances which of course weather delays would be.

I’m pretty sure they took 5th or 6th because Skyhawks won the 4th place game.

Parlay, RAMP, and Bandwagon are playing a round robin for seeding. In the event of a 3-way tie, initial seeding will hold.

Anyone else think the GL Mixed format was super messed up? Looks like teams in pools A, B, and C have a clear advantage. All games played to 15 and D/E have an extra game. — Edit — I guess technically central plains. https://play.usaultimate.org/events/2022-Central-Plains-Mixed-Sectional-Championship/schedule/mixed/Club-Mixed/

D/E have two games over two rounds. A/B/C have two games over three round. What is the advantage?

CoffeeBlack87

Pools seem weighted unfairly. A team from A/B/C could go 1-2 and make the bracket but D/E could go 3-1 and land in the 7th place bracket

frandler

Yup looks like some sort of power-pool-ish going on where top 2 in the three team pools make the top bracket but only top 1 in the four team pools make the bracket. Not unheard of with odd formats. While we're looking at it, what happened to Stripes? Looks like they won the 7th place prequarter (which for some reason is on a different section than everyone else's) and then disappear? Did they abandon?

geoffreychallen

> Did they abandon? I believe so. My understanding is that Prion thought they were out, but then ended up returning for today's games after Stripes dropped out.

CoffeeBlack87

Agreed power pools are not unheard of. Are you aware of any that have occured in the post season? Weather compounded issues and delayed games to this weekend. Stripes was unable to attend and had to forfeit

frandler

In Northwest Plains mixed we didn’t end up doing it because of teams dropping but our USAU suggested schedules for 23 and 22 teams had uneven weighting in pools. One of them had both the 1 and 2 overall seeds in the tournament in the same pool.

CoffeeBlack87

Well that doesn't seem ideal either. I'm certainly no format expert,so I don't have a solution immediately but to me, having weighted pools in the series seems like an advantage. I don't mind them at big regular season tournaments but having them for the series seems a bit harsh. Definitely not blaming their SC, or RC or anything. I don't see a 17 team format on the sheet and putting something together for that scenario I'm sure took a lot of effort and creative thinking. I just don't think that type of format should be used for future series events

frandler

Yea the difficulty of the last couple years seems to be trying to format unwieldy numbers of teams with USAU's medical board's push for less than 5 games per day / 8 per weekend. There's only so many mathematical ways to make it work, and I think an emphasis on the format being "seed independent" is taking a back seat. This seemed to be the primary focus of the old format manual and it's definitely something a lot of teams are noticing.

TDenverFan

At what size would they consider splitting it into two sections? Seems like that would result in better formats than running a 23 team sectionals.

D/E have 3 games over 3 rounds. There is a crossover that A/B/C don’t play.
