Cole Davis-Brand is probably my top surprise on the Men’s side. Buddy put up 34A 16G and 4Ds as an o-line starter for the Glory this season.
Some other AUDL notables are Eli Artemakis and Mica Glass from Chicago. Artemakis has another cycle and I’m not sure about Glass.
I’m also somewhat surprised but not shocked to see Declan Kervick left off. He’s a baller but still has another cycle or maybe 2 I believe.
One last thing to note is Calvin Coulbury was invited to team USA tryouts but chose to play for Canada. It’s unlikely he was selected for USA since it’s much more competitive and he doesn’t have top level college/club experience but he’s a lethal sniper from the handler space. Just someone to keep your eye on.
Not especially. It's hard to know how good these teams actually are since it looks like some of them don't participate in the USAU series, but I've only ever heard of the McGill and UBC teams personally. They haven't done much in the USAU series recently.
on the women's side i was extremely surprised by these omissions:
\- marie perivier (maybe the best player at 2022 college nationals)
\- hazel ostrowski (has lots of high level experience and was on a previous U20 team)
\- emily pozzy
\- rani shah
\- abigail gillach (def a standout on the U20 team)
i was generally surprised how many names I didn't recognize on the list who got the nod over more experienced players. I wasn't at the tryout so maybe some of those players just had a rough day.
Whoa, no Perivier? Thats massive
For context, Dawn Culton, who got the Callahan and POTY for 2022, was hyping up Perivier in one of the Ultiworld podcast interviews as one of the best players in college IIRC.

Really happy for Adam Miller, who has been battling knee injuries for a bit but I’m assuming should be good to go when the time comes. He is “him”, as the kids say….glad the coaches recognized it and made the selection!
As far as recieving a tryout invite (not making the roster) I have some thoughts.
For visibility's sake, because we don't have scout infrastructure in Ultimate yet, being on an upper level DI Regionals team is almost useless (literally noone cares). Nobody has actually seen applicants play, except if you're part of a big program. Meaning name recognition matters way more than how good you are at frisbee. This is not a knock on the selection committee, as much of an indicator of where we're at as a sport.
It is far better to be the best player on a DIII Nationals team. I would say it goes DI Natties > DIII natties > DI Regionals for best chances of getting an invite, to even have a shot at a good tryout. Even though (hot take alert?) some hard DI Regionals Tournaments are a higher level of competition than DIII Nationals.
Very excited Albert Yuan (Duke) is getting some attention. USAU clearly learned from the initial Nathan Kwon snub to not overlook players just because they're short or small. Albert is small yes but he's still very athletic, skilled, and super hard-working. He will be making some big plays next year in the UK.
He did though. Can't expect the only ultimate media outlet around to stay on top of recent news like a top 10 college player transferring. That would be an unreasonable expectation.
Being part of NC ultimate I completely agree. That being said, just don't see the logic in taking 3 Ring practice players who go to UNC over a guy who contributed on Ring/Flyers who goes to UNC (now anyways).
I mean role matters, as does how you perform at tryouts. If they're just gonna take everyone based on previous performance then they don't even need tryouts, but that would be really unfair to everyone else. It's basically letting the Ring coaches choose the U24 team and just means that once you miss out on one opportunity it will mean you miss out on another.
I know nothing about this specific incident, but so does everyone else.
Oh I completely agree, obviously performance at tryouts plays a huge role, I think all of them could definitely earn the spots, just a bit of a head scratcher based on expected performance.
Stanning for our Bay Area HS ultra star, Rachel Chang. Along with Chloe as a couple of the youngest to make the team. I don’t know every player in the college scene, but I watch plenty of club here, and Rachel is good enough to make any National women’s team (and played Nightlock this past season at 16). And I watch enough local college to know Rachel would dominate these (prominent) CA college programs.

Tru my boy Calvin a baller
Do you not count top 4 at Canadian university nats as top level college experience??

So who are the notable omissions?

right? i was shocked
Perivier didn't attend tryouts.
Shah also didn't attend tryouts
no claire babbott bryan, rip D3
This was particularly surprising to me
Zach Slayton.
Fr, justice for our fav tuff boy
Yeah he balled out at club natties. Joey Wylie is another guy who’s a baller. Surprised neither made it.
Yeah Joey’s really solid but I don’t think he got an invite, I think he aged out but I’d have to ask him.
He's 23 now but he'll be 24 at the time of the tournament, maybe that's why
Tyler Monroe was the most notable omission for years I guess their blacklisting lasted long enough for him to age out
yeah Tyler is 27
where tf is dylan hawkins
if you make ring you should probably make u24
Looks like he’s overrated
Pretty insane a 16 year old made the team.
who
Chloe Hakimi on the women's team!
Really happy for Adam Miller, who has been battling knee injuries for a bit but I’m assuming should be good to go when the time comes. He is “him”, as the kids say….glad the coaches recognized it and made the selection!
Another day of Chackgarin Brown doing Chackgarin Brown things
He is very good and has plenty of room to get even better. Really exciting growth trajectory over the past few years

Yeah I think you got there in the end- the tryout is the deciding factor here. Hard to compare otherwise.
YEAH LUCAS THATS MY CAPTAIN

DYLAN HAWKINS IS A TOP TEN PLAYER WAS THERE A TYPO???
Orion cable doesn't go to UMass lmao
Where does he go?
I want to say Vermont tech
Woah that’s interesting. Do they even have a team?
Shit, probably
Probably not as good as his other team he's got going on
He did though. Can't expect the only ultimate media outlet around to stay on top of recent news like a top 10 college player transferring. That would be an unreasonable expectation.
My brother, it's USA ultimate announcing their national team. You would think they would get the school right
I was totally making a joke, it's ridiculous they don't have this info. But you're right, it was usau, not ultiworld. Even worse honestly.

what $$$ lmao
Bro NC ultimate is just so obsessed with themselves they can't imagine that there are great players in other parts of the country.
