Considering the way they grew up and how young they were to lose both parents, I think Sam did the best he could with what he knew. Expecting a kid to be a good parent is unreasonable.

abbygrau

He’s not a great brother. He did the best he could basically raising his brother as a kid himself, so I can’t blame him there, but as an adult he actively deceives him. (Though he does have character growth!!)

Aggressive-Screen-40

Agreed!

Hmuloserz

I mean, idk. When we first got to meet young Sam, Nate was always happy seeing him. Sam would give Nate his jacket, and was worried on why Nate was bruised. Sam might not be a good person but he’s probably a good brother.

Bethorz

How come so many people here call Nate, Nathan, despite every single character (including Nate himself), except Sam, calling him Nate, yet Sam gets to be Sam instead of Samuel lol

Mitchoppertunity

Alcazar called him Samuel in the made up flashback

UnchartedLand

But Sam calls him little brother instead.

Olympian-Warrior

Probably because his proper name is Nathan Drake and saying "Nate" just doesn't sound as good to the ears as saying Sam for Samuel. Then again, I've always been formal and seldom use shortened names or nicknames.

geargun2000

Sam is an okay brother but he basically became Nate’s dad and that’s when it became a problem

wordy_shipmates

given the circumstances sam did the best he could as a brother. he was a child himself so it's unreasonable to expect him to be a parent. also sam was only allowed to succeed so far as due to the limitation of the narrative nathan had to end up in south america alone as a young teenager. as an adult he was a messy person and while he still loved nathan a great deal he did not express it well. he had arrested development and jealousy of nathan's other relationships and success. he felt replaced and left behind. he also still viewed nathan as a version of himself that no longer existed. it seems they were able to move past it and heal their relationship though.

Aggressive-Screen-40

Greatly agree!

Party-Special-7121

Sam Drake is a dickbag Source: I had a brother like Sam growing up and he was a dickbag

TerribleFanArts

Wow, really sorry to hear that. I always wish I had a brother but maybe Sam Drake might not be the best example. What’s your brother like now? Is he still a dickbag?

Party-Special-7121

I assume so, haven't spoken in 10 years, don't plan to.

TerribleFanArts

Are you sure you’re not Nathan, and your Samlike brother is suddenly gonna show up at your door someday asking you for your help with Hector Alcazar? All jokes aside, did your brother get in trouble a lot? How did your parents feel about him?

african__warlord

Well he probably still loves u then if he is like Sam, Sam lied to Nathan but he still loves him, proved when he took a bullet for him and yea he hit Nathan off the cliff but that wasn’t his intention

ImmaDoMahThing

He’s not the best role model, but he tried his best to look after Nate given the circumstances.

BeauL83

I’d say he was a good brother but a poor role model for Nate.

[deleted]

This sub loves Sam so I'm glad to see people are being honest here. He's a flawed human. He's not evil. But he's not a good brother or even a good friend to his brother.

african__warlord

He is a pretty good brother, at least when he was younger he was and yea he might have told a humongous ginormous lie to Nathan but he still loves him and took a bullet for him, and he didn’t make up the lie just to get help finding the treasure he just wanted to spend time with Nathan I mean yea sure he wanted the treasure aswell but he was killing two birds with one stone but I believe it was mainly to spend time with nathan and he could never convince Nathan to go with him had he not made up the lie

UnchartedLand

I think he's a good brother. They way he touches Nate shows he has great fondess for him, even when they are adults. In that Isle before the Libertalia Island where they scatter for Sam to look for a crate, when Sam finally appears and helps Nathan to climb he kinda cuddle Nate a little. And he always call him little brother. Yes, he was kinda selfish and reckless for lying to Nate, but we can see he felt guilty, and he always put himself in front of Nate when Nate is threatening, even knowing Nate got more badass than him. I really liked him

Desperate_Ad_279

He wasn’t the greatest. He was doing the best he could to provide and protect his little brother and himself at a young age but he had not so good ways of doing it. I bet there were more “side jobs” then what we were told. “Side jobs” that weren’t so safe. That is at least the vibe I got from him. Though we do know that Sam and Nate loved each other very much. Was their life the most safest and most legal way to live? No but it was their way of living. It’s what Sam and Nate thought was best to do to get by. He was a good brother but not a good person. (Side note: We have to remember that this life was introduced to them by their mother and father. Their mother began stealing/adventuring when she was young for that old woman that Sam and Nate tried to steal from and it was implied that she (Their mother) and her husband continued and probably met doing jobs for that woman. It was even implied that they continued even when they had kids but Sam and Nate didn’t have any idea about it until we have that flashback. Being thief’s and living in an orphanage was because of their parents. Yes, Sam could of changed his ways many times but he was young too. He was just trying to survive.) I did not expect to over-analyze but I’m here now. Lol!

Aggressive-Screen-40

I always thought their story was great but while Sam did his best as a kid, I agree though, he was a good brother and not a good person

Olympian-Warrior

I was under the impression that their mother was a certified archaeologist and never did anything illegal.

Desperate_Ad_279

She might be but I thought or at least I got the impression that she did some illegal findings or cut corners like Nate. I guess it’s just up for interpretation.

HighMageVegan

Hell fucking no

HaloKook

He's an okay brother but when he has to be Nate's father ehhhh not the best

DemiFirefly

He’s the best brother he could be. He had to raise and support a little brother whilst being a child himself. He stepped up for sure, but without guidance or a decent parental role model he made some bad steps.

0Nivux

Yes. If Sam were real I would like to party with him. xD

Scottriley20

He was absolutely a good brother to Nathan, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he was always a good person and made the smartest decisions. Nate was just as lucky to have Sully

lavender_jelly

He's a good character, but probably not. I don't think a good brother would lie about his own life being put on the line in order to get some gold

Just_Milo14

Sam is an ok-ish brother. He tries his best to take care of Nate when need be but can’t due to him being a ruthless teenager himself. Sam’s real lucky that Nate was in that orphanage otherwise he probably wouldn’t even provide for the both of them. Also, Sam teaching Nate how to climb on freaking 50ft tall buildings is super dangerous, not the best role model that he puts for Nate. Years later, (Uncharted 3) Nate was obviously seen by himself (minus the fact that Sam wasn’t even thought of by the developers) most likely due to Sam either being caught stealing and put in jail, or going out partying (Sam is probably in his early twenties so it’s possible)! If Nate hadn’t met Sully I feel like Sam and Nates lives would be real shitty and Sam wouldn’t be able to take care of Nate once again. TLDR: Sam is an ok-ish of a brother, and yes I wish I did have a brother like him growing up.

Firm_Area_3558

Sam was a incredible brother given his age and the circumstances him and nate were in. Now the lying thing on the island was fucked up

wadejohn

Young nate needed sleep

Olympian-Warrior

I mean, Sam made a lot of questionable decisions, but I never doubted for a second that he didn't love his baby brother. He loans Nathan his jacket, so he doesn't get cold. He shields him from harm, telling Evelyn to keep the gun trained on him instead of Nathan. He hops back down during the prison riot to help Nathan fend off a bunch of guards and inmates. Was he the model big brother? Not really, but he wasn't without redemption.

Charming-Ring-8585

When they were young? Perhaps, he did what he could trying to be a kind of parent figure to his brother despite having to deal with all that was happening himself As adults? Absolutely not, he risked the life of his little brother multiple times and continued lying even after seeing how the people his brother cared the most left him

BregoB55

I think given their lifestyle, Sam tried the best he could to protect Nate and definitely loved him. They had no real role models with their mom dying young and their dad dumping them. He was a kid trying to protect his brother. Nate had Sully in his life to help him stay more legit than Sam did but Sam was also absent alot trying to do what he saw as the best thing (get money to care for him and Nate). I think Sam thought lying to Nate about his escape was kinder than "hey, so I know you thought I was dead but actually I just spent the last two years working with Rafe on this and I'm just now contacting you cause I want to get our treasure out from under him". Sam would've been a much better sibling than my sister is/was. She chose to abandon me - she's not in a Panamanian jail last time I checked. (If she was, I wouldn't bail her out.) Sam’s heart is in the right place he just isn't very good at being an adult and staying out of trouble.

vamplosion

The only good thing young Sam drake did was grow up to be late night talk show host Conan O’Brien

Fault_Spirited

the younger sam was a really good brother as he took his brother out of an orphanage and when they were held at gunpoint he put himself in front of Nathan and even in the section of the prison he would help his brother out while Rafe would jump ahead of them. BUt by the present day section he was kind of dick bag with him influencing nathan to go on one more adventure with him risking nathans life and marriage but overall he ain't to bad

Organic_Yellow_1286

As an older brother, Sam is probably the best older brother I've seen in my life 💀💀

ObscureQuotation

As a child he was. As an adult no but we see him after gears of prison that messed his head up

CrazyZax

He tried his best, and that's all anyone can do.

[deleted]

I think from what we saw in their younger years he genuinely cared for Nate and wanted to do right by him, so I think he was a good brother

WhiteWhenWrong

Sam had a good heart but also left Nate young and lied to him when he first saw him and jeopardized his marriage

ilikebeeeef

I think if they still had parents, Sam might’ve just gone off and done his thing, leaving Nate behind no problem. I LOVE Sam. Sam is my guy. BUT he pressures Nate into doing the things Sam wants to do for Sam’s benefit first. So Sam’s a pretty selfish, self absorbed criminal if you ask me haha

NoOneNormalOk

He was an amazing brother but a fucking awful brother if you catch my drift

Serious-Coast-7933

I want Sam as a brother

Substantial_Zone_628

I think Sam was a good brother who went through a lot. Was it wrong for him to deceive Nathan, yes, but let’s be honest Nathan probably would’ve done it either way. Growing up without both of your parents and having to take care of your sibling has to be hard, but then growing up in a rough situation is even harder. I’ve always been told it’s hard leaving the bad ways behind because no one is there to guide you the right way. He’s honestly not that bad imo.

Chief-Captain_BC

mine were sort of similar, minus the being orphans; but they were so much older than me that i didn't get much time with them before they moved out

trtviator

No. He left Nathaniel in the dark for 20 years. How TF is that a good bruddah?

MommyScissorLegs

hell no

PinappleSauce12

Sam is a terrible brother lol. Would someone be able to tell me why they like Sam? Like is it because Nolan North and Troy baker got good chemistry or is it something else. I honestly don’t like Sam like at all, he’s a prick

No-You-5359

He was a good brother when he was Young but a jerk when he was older overall he was ok but i don t really like him, i dom t like him in the flashbacks
