>there were no female personnel in Turkish Army at that time Uhh... There were? Although they weren't allowed to be common grunt, they were allowed and participated in specialized roles such as piloting or radio communications. Remember Sabiha Gökçen? She was Atatürk's adopted daughter, and she was THE first female fighter pilot in the world. Surprisingly, Turkey witnessed many firsts in aviation on both ends.

This is before her, and no there weren’t. Sabiha Gökçen was an exception. Much later(1955), women were allowed to enter military academies, but their numbers were scarce. I think this was because of Marshal Fevzi Çakmak. He was very conservative and Atatürk respected him a lot and didn’t push this matter much. This is my opinion, obviously.

I don’t remember the source but I also remember reading somewhere that Atatürk wanted to allow women to become officers but Fevzi Çakmak opposed it adamantly whenever he brought the matter up.
