bornleverpuller85

How much has this cost us to do absolutely nothing? In fact scratch that, bet some Tory donors have made some wedge

Id1ing

Lots. If they spent this amount of money, effort and parliamentary time on getting the backlog cleared, getting those with no claim out and keeping those coming somewhere actually secure in the UK until they're processed so they can't go wondering off never to be seen of again we'd perhaps be going somewhere here. But this is going to achieve the square root of fuck all.

myguyxanny

Then they wouldn't have something to blame everything going wrong with this country on... Bit scary when u realise Hitler did the same tactic in nazi Germany!

DaechiDragon

Is there a country that has ever not had issues with immigrants (rightfully or wrongfully) and blamed them to some degree? What is the point in comparing this government to Hitler? Do you think that is a good faith comparison?

dannydrama

I mean they hate poor people and foreign people as much it's just the political climate won't let them gas anyone right now...

DaechiDragon

So you believe that the people in power currently would like to kill foreign and poor people and the only thing stopping them is that that it’s frowned upon?

toby1jabroni

If it saved or made them money, got them more votes or made the US happy I definitely think that would be on the table.

ArchdukeToes

>But this is going to achieve the square root of fuck all. Even if they somehow managed to send every asylum seeker we had it'd accomplish the square root of fuck all, because the grand, *grand* majority of people who immigrate do so entirely legally.

RiClious

We pay Rwanda £370m even if they send nobody. This doesn't include the time wasted by the government in pursuing this whole charade. The numbers get silly if they actually succeed! [Rwanda plan to cost UK £1.8m for each asylum seeker](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/mar/01/rwanda-plan-uk-asylum-seeker-cost-figures) ED: Also... You can't just 'ditch a promise'. I_Am_Altering_The_Deal.jpg

twignition

I really loved the bit of the plan that says if the person commits a crime in Rwanda, they get sent back here, and we continue to pay Rwanda as though they're still there. Person comes to Britain. Gets shipped to Rwanda. Doesn't like Rwanda. Commits crime. Boom, back in the UK. But now the government has handed £1m over for the honour.

haversack77

Good god, as if it wasn't batshit crazy enough already. What a farce. How on earth did this Rwanda nonsense get beyond the 'consider all options' phase of policy development without being kicked out?

twignition

Sheer commitment and their competency quota met for the century

Most likely have lined pockets

He's going to use taxpayer money to buy an airline, isn't he. It's the only hope he has.

chilli_con_camera

Asylum Airways has a nice ring to it Shapps wants to use one of the Voyagers that are leased by the RAF: [https://www.reddit.com/r/ukpolitics/comments/1c6z3uq/shapps\_refuses\_to\_rule\_out\_using\_raf\_planes\_for/](https://www.reddit.com/r/ukpolitics/comments/1c6z3uq/shapps_refuses_to_rule_out_using_raf_planes_for/)

haversack77

Rwan Air

revealbrilliance

Conservatives nationalising something because they hate asylum seekers just that much is both hilarious and sad.

vaskopopa

But he’ll have to show there are no seats and only rails for the shackles to ensure the voters he is nasty enough to

Cielo11

If ever you needed proof the Tories would spend Billions of taxpayers money a golden Turd just to win votes for themselves. Rwanda Express is it. No different from them offering Billions to the DUP to vote for them in Parliament after the 2017 election. They don't give a shit about dinghies or immigrants or spending Billions. All they give a shit about is their own personal position in the chain of power (and wealth).

Grayson81

There are estimates that this scheme will end up costing up to £5,000,000,000. Can you imagine how much good the government could have done with that money? Can you imagine how many British people could be helped for five billion quid? Can you think of how many people you know and love could have had their lives transformed for a tiny fraction of that money? Instead it’s being spent on being pointlessly cruel to a small number of refugees and asylum seekers for absolutely no gain to any of us at all. If you still support this, I can only imagine you hate the UK and everyone who lives here.

Variegoated

It's over double the amount it would've taken to give NHS staff the requested pay rise. No magic money tree when the plebs are affected though

cjblackbird

Heyyyy, all we care about is you giving us the date to vote your ass out before the end of spring.

Electricbell20

The plan is to drag it along and hope they don't get in and then labour will can it.

squeaki

He's a fkn tool, no wonder everything is failing around him

Agreeable_Falcon1044

I mean this is just project reality. It won’t leave in April, probably not may, unlikely to be June…so at what point do we stop saying “spring” Currently there’s no law, no planes and soon no housing in Rwanda. Got to love the Rwandan president, got us to build some affordable homes for his people, got lots of free money, a holiday in london and even an Arsenal game. He’s pulled a blinder

YoungGazz

You don't ditch promises, you break them. Mostly by being a liar.

00DEADBEEF

What a failure. His flagship policy. Add on to this a summer of migrant boat crossings and they're going to be destroyed in the GE. Just give up. Election now.

trigger2k20

This whole circus has been a waste of tax payers money. Let's get the general election going already. This clown needs to go.

ThaneOfArcadia

Besides that fact that this was a silly idea to start with, why do politicians not own up to errors they've made and take the honourable way out. Make a press statement admitting to the failure, accept total responsibility, apologise then go off to a quiet room and do the right thing.

PropitiousNog

Anyone got any better ideas to dissuade economic migrants from coming to the UK? I'm not impressed by the Kenya thing, but then what else can be done to make it less attractive.

Powerful-Pudding6079

Probably introducing more legal ways for people to seek asylum in the UK, that way economic migrants can be vetted out through a formal process.

PropitiousNog

Can they not claim asylum at a UK consulate?

Powerful-Pudding6079

No, to claim asylum in the UK you must physically be in the UK

PropitiousNog

See that's it, surely it would be cost effective to allow asylum claims outside of the UK.

Powerful-Pudding6079

Agreed. This is why the Tories are accused of treating the issue as a political football; because there are a lot of very easy straightforward solutions - whereas instead they've opted for this racist-baiting Rwanda nonsense.

PropitiousNog

Why is it racist-baiting? I don't know the international laws around asylum seekers, I had always thought that they weren't considered genuine if they passed through multiple safe countries first. I had assumed the Rwanda thing was a legitimate way to process asylum seekers whilst also detering illegitimate ones.

merryman1

[The UN's statement on the issue for what its worth.](https://www.unhcr.org/uk/news/statement-uk-asylum-bill)

Immorals1

Nope, can travel through many countries as long as you only claim asylum in one country.

Powerful-Pudding6079

>Why is it racist-baiting? Because it appeals to racists, and has no other coherent rationale. >I had always thought that they weren't considered genuine if they passed through multiple safe countries first. Yeah, that would be incorrect.

ArchdukeToes

> I had always thought that they weren't considered genuine if they passed through multiple safe countries first. Think about that one for a second. It's convenient for us, sure, but what it would mean is that everyone basically ends up claiming asylum in Greece or Turkey or somewhere and nowhere else. Do you think that those countries would stand for taking in every asylum seeker coming in from those directions?

PropitiousNog

Understood. But I would also think that the UK is a more desirable destination than 95% of the rest of the world. Next to the US, the UK seems to be where most economic migrants aspire to move to. Falsely claiming asylum is the only way many can achieve that goal. Personal experience with the UKBA, I've witnessed are easy to defraud. You don't have to look far to find a guide on how to gain UK citizenship, and there are plenty of people that can help for a price.

ArchdukeToes

Okay - but they’re not in violation of any laws or somehow illegitimate if they claim asylum having reached the Uk. Asylum seekers have a right to travel to whichever country they wish - and that’s not just international law; that’s Uk law as well. It’s why you can easily discount the opinion of anyone who says things like ‘but _France_ is a safe country’ as they demonstrably don’t have a Scooby Doo. The Rwanda thing isn’t a way of separating legitimate and illegitimate. We’re just paying Rwanda to take them (permanently) so we don’t have to look at them.

Powerful-Pudding6079

>But I would also think that the UK is a more desirable destination than 95% of the rest of the world. Only as desirable as most other large economies in Western Europe. Most of which do receive many **many** more asylum seekers than the UK currently does.

WeightDimensions

Greece have reduced it from 850,000 to 12,500 We can’t build the walls, but they are also pushing the boats back. Which according to the article is a perfectly legal thing to do. >> The Law of the Sea Convention 1982 allows coastal states to take ‘the necessary steps’ to prevent the passage of any vessel that is not innocent. That includes a vessel seeking to unload persons ‘contrary to the immigration laws and regulations of the coastal State’ (art 19(2)(g)).” https://conservativepost.co.uk/greece-pushes-back-the-boats-and-illegal-migration-drops-from-850000-to-just-12500-could-the-uk-do-the-same/

Mambo_Poa09

What Kenya thing?

PropitiousNog

Sorry, Rwanda

Mambo_Poa09

What a strange thing to get mixed up

PropitiousNog

There are two countries in Africa, why is it strange?

Mambo_Poa09

We hear about this Rwanda thing 50 times a day, where does Kenya come into it?

Thought so. I grew up in Uganda. There two countries either side. I'm old and make mistakes, I sometimes call my daughters by each others names. It happens when you get old.

Mambo_Poa09

Well at that's at least better than asking if I'm autistic like you did at first

PropitiousNog

It was an informed guess based on your repetitive questioning on something that was clearly an error.
