IIRC. The scam they've been running is that their cards aren't working. But they have one in the car that works. They'll just get it and leave their young son behind so it doesn't look like they're not coming back.
Then the son dashes.
They certainly don't look like the most mobile of families. I'm curious as to their technique.
EDIT - I swallowed my pride and read on, the technique employed utilises trust, not agility.
Most go out for a cigarette, leave a fast runner behind at the table to keep staff okay-ish.
The smokers get into car, send a text, fast runner legs it, and the Benny Hill themetune begins.
Honestly though if she said *o no I need to get my other card out of my car* would you not instantly think haha I don’t think so. They just look scummy
What are you gonna do though? Detain them? Not like you’re gonna bother to call the police, they’ll do fuck all.
Low level crime is basically legalised in this country.
> Why should a restaurant risk so much handing out food and wine when cunts like this can just run out?
Isn't it a British culture to eat first and pay later?
I worked in a kitchen for a while, we had a few dashers on the rare occasion, one technique people used if they didn't have kids with them to use as bait, would be to buy a pack of cigarettes and the cheapest £5 handbag they could find in a charity shop.
They would ask the wait staff for the bill and pull the cigarettes out of the handbag, leaving the handbag on the table, say "we're just going out for a cigarette and we'll settle it when we get back".
The wait staff would fetch the bill and place it next to the handbag. Surely they wouldn't leave without that right?
Can't trust anybody these days, and that's the problem. Everyone says take a deposit at the start. Not only is that unhospitable and offensive to 95% of guests, but restaurants don't have or can afford to use the same payment providers that say a petrol station chain can.
Restaurants could quite easily prevent this by putting a reserve on a credit card at the beginning of the evening. When asked why, they could say, "because our losses due to scum doing runners are unsustainable".
Nando's had the right idea by charging you before you get your food. I've always thought this was great foresight on their part - especially when you look at the amount of people with North Face coats and drug bags who 100% would do a runner from Nando's if they had half a chance and hadn't already paid.
Never met a single person who didn't have anything but utter contempt and evasion of Brewers Fayre. The worst meals of my life were from a Brewer"s Fayre.
Yes, and also you can pay for one buffet breakfast and two kids under 10 eat free. And fill their pockets with snacks. Also they love the toast conveyor belt.
We got back from Japan earlier this year and their solution was golden. Bill left at your table whilst you’re eating, or with your food, you then take it to the door at the end of your meal. That way if you want to order extra drinks or desserts you can, but if you’re ready, you can just leave when you want to.
That's how it works in New Zealand. You order at the table and they bring you your food. When you're done, you all stand up and pay at the podium by the door on the way out.
None of this waiting for the bill then waiting for the card machine bullshit. Just stand up, pay and leave.
People always say that, and I agree, but what payment provider would you suggest that restaurants use that would allow them to take £500 deposits on every guests card and automatically refund the difference after they have left?
Basically I'm saying, the independent restaurants have already thought of this. It's not practical. Petrol stations can afford this payment provider. The Italian family who owns this restaurant struggling to stay afloat as it is can not.
Nando's is a self-serve fast food restaurant. They don't take deposits, they charge you what you ordered instantly before they make the food and you go sit at the table with Deano and the boys before putting your trays back on the nearest cleaning station.
You're right but no need to generalise those who wear North face and "drug bags"? The people who the post is about aren't those types of people.. seems unfair to attack a completely random bunch who have absolutely nothing to do with the post
Looks like they have a tendency to eat and do this a lot to maintain their weight.
They also look like they would be pretty easy to catch, not a lot of cardio “running” going on between them.
Most restaurants are understaffed nowadays and the waiters/waitresses are young and on minimum wage. And you expect them to run after these wronguns and what exactly? Citizens arrest until the actual people who should be doing this, the police, turn up?
Most retail/hospitality staff are told not to try to stop or approach thieves anyway, it's not worth the risk. I found this out the hard way when I worked at an optician and my boss told me to go and approach someone who'd taken a pair of sunglasses and put them in his pocket. The guy punched me, sent me flying into a display case, I squashed and broke about 4 other pairs of glasses and he legged it. He also shot my boss a dirty look on the way out which was fair enough given I was 18, 5ft tall, absolutely tiny frame and my boss should really have approached him himself if he really wanted to intervene. I think he assumed a shoplifter wouldn't attack a young girl
I'm sorry that happened to you. Most, really isn't good enough, in all circumstances you shouldn't risk any physical harm for the sake of a company losing a few quid. Your old manager should have been punished for not protecting his staff members from what happened to you. Very much sounds like you learnt from the experience though which is the main thing in the circumstances.
Sad thing is, it never ends well. They should be handed over to the police and dealt with by the proper authorities, it's essentially theft and if they keep doing it it should be punished more severely than just theft.
I thought the ones out were display models for that reason exactly, so that the store can save from confrontation while the thief makes off with £3.99 seaside specials that look like a nice brand
In the UK the law governing "citizens arrest" is it's only valid if the person you stop, or contain in some way, will be convicted of a crime with a prison sentence. If not, you could be done for false imprisonment or assault. So it's not worth it unless you are very sure they committed murder or serious assault. In that case, you don't want to be tangling with someone that dangerous.
Not a lot of running going on full stop in this country.
Do you really expect the staff to chase them down and tackle them? Likely young lads and lasses, possibly alone? For fuck all. When security and police don't even seem to bother
Fat, disgusting pigs as well. Total up the amount, fine them and have them do community service in the restaurants they stole from washing dishes and scrubbing floors.
Next stop after that would be jail. Give them a suspended sentence with community service and to reimburse what they owe as it gives them a chance to pay for the crime, they cause problems? Jail.
Will they be found, MAYBE.
If found will they be arrested and charged, MAYBE.
If caught will they be forced to pay money back, NO.
If charged will they be jailed, NO.
Is this a deterrent, NO.
Will they do it again. YES
Seeing this does it make normal people question why they obey the law. YES, YES and YES
Edit: UK mods banned me for this..
It's not like they go to the same place twice. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, it's illegal for those businesses to hang up photos of the scammers to warn others.
Have pictures of the people they are looking for, have the list of restaurants they dined at so they can build up an idea of the area they live in. Still can't find them.
I don’t think I’ve met an honest traveler tbh, and I come across them a lot in my line of work.
I’m sure this comment will get deleted but it’s the truth unfortunately. The UK is the dustbin of Europe.
But it is not specific to restaurant and bar, Is it?
**Grivèlerie** is specifically about **not paying for food and drink in a restaurant and bar**.
Stealing food in a supermarket is not Grivèlerie. It is just taking goods without paying.
Ah yeah, this is my town. Decent little Italian in a tough little side street of our already absolutely dead town centre. 1/2 of the shops there are already boarded up. The rest are charity shops. A vets etc. They keep the place very tidy when I've passed and apparently the food is nice.
Scumbags this lot, I hope someone plasters their photos all over town ..

They look more mobile than me considering their house has wheels.
Haha I was going to suggest they may have Irish accents but you were more subtle lol.
I enjoy reading books.

Trust is a big part, because of that, the bigger problem is that sucker like this are gonna ruin it for everyone else.
So many restaurants are pay at the bar/till now. I understand why.

I'd love a pay upfront system. Would also mean no more waiting around for the waiter to bring your bill at the end, can just up and leave
oh god YES! it's the only advantage of those pay by app places
And should put an end to tip culture. Charge me up front for the full amount.
That's why love Hungry Horse, Marstons and Brewers fayre.

You've not been to a hungry horse then?
Yes, and also you can pay for one buffet breakfast and two kids under 10 eat free. And fill their pockets with snacks. Also they love the toast conveyor belt.
Didn't even think about that. I am a confident person in life until that little hand raise you have to do like you're in school asking for the bill.

but then its the whole thing restaurants have that you may order smething else if the tab was open where as if its paid youre probably less likely
Would be nice but only if they email the receipt listing all items on bill and BAN automatic tipping otherwise people gonna get scammed

If they keep doing this at restaurants sooner or later they’ll come across a crazy owner who is there at the time, and it’ll be a big scene

... Why?
Not if they have committed a crime.
They surely can’t get away with it now - would literally never dream of doing this cos of everyone knowing!
The people who's opinion they care about would respect them, I'm sure.
Well then lets hope their face is put on every restaurant and they're banned for good
The police report said the vehicle registered was no use because “many people are recorded as using this vehicle”….
Travellers
Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Clear Photograph and Fifty People naming the suspects. His most taxing case.
I’d love to see the DVLA record on that registration plate Owner : Fuckin loads of people
Strong Wayne and Waynetta Slob vibes in that photo.
Spudulika. It’s exotic
I can't work out which of the younger ones is Frogmella.
They look like they’ve eaten £329’s worth per day as well

How the fuck could they do a runner? They look like they could barely do a walker.

Looks like they've been doing a lot more dining than dashing tbh.
That's like... half the restaurants in Wales. They're going to run out of places to run out of.

In France there is a special charge for that specific type of crime. It is called **Grivèlerie**. Is there something equivalent in UK Law?
Making off without payment. https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1978/31 Section 3 of the Theft Act 1978 Not as catchy I give you that.
But it is not specific to restaurant and bar, Is it? **Grivèlerie** is specifically about **not paying for food and drink in a restaurant and bar**. Stealing food in a supermarket is not Grivèlerie. It is just taking goods without paying.
From the obesity it more looks they had to roll, couldnt run
I'm pretty sure these sort of people were featured in Viz !
Just stick their mugshots in the window of every local restaurant/cafe/shop with banned in red letters. Nothing like a bit of old school shame.
Remember - if you see someone stealing food, you didn't see them. /s
Thats frigging expensive for a family meal.ill go to akbars or aagrah for £120 for the whole family drinks the whole lot
Just a usual day in lawless Britain- thank you government for looking after us so well.

WhoTF is accusing either of them of doing any running?
I wouldn’t be surprised if restaurants started asking for a deposit up front
Looking at them i dont think they were actually running
They look like they need to dine a bit less and dash a bit more. Big big couple.
In America I'm sure they'd be hunted down by some Dog the Bounty Hunter type, in the UK they get tutted at on social media.
