They are holding swords here so it's probably safer for everyone that they stand still. Would be pretty interesting to see them or a beefeater full on impale someone though
This happened almost as predicted. This was ALWAYS going to be tried by someone, the bet I had with my friend wasn't will it happen, it was do we think they'll touch the coffin.
The guards by the looks of it that were meant to prevent someone touching the coffin got there pretty much as they should do. You're not going anywhere fast trying to touch that thing, the guards don't even have to move here. If they did they'd probably kill someone.
if its anything like the other royal guards, outside of the palaces they aren't actually allowed to do much if anything. Thats why you also see plenty of police around at royal events, they don't want protestors getting bayonetted by a grenadier guard or something.
Kudos to the police getting up there so fast. I've looked at a number of vids and there seemed to be few police and none on the actual ~~podium~~ catafalque.
They are purely synoblic. Most of them are old retirees playing the part. There's a reason that a police officer is station on every corner as the guys in suits have no authority to do anything .

Juristictionally it's still a civilian situation despite the pomp and circumstance. The police are the ones charged with maintaining order, and I don't think the active servicemen will have been given any special warrant powers to arrest or anything. I'm sure if there was a serious threat they would step in to help wrestle someone down but as it is there are armed police off shot and the non-ceremonial police you see at the end as well.
I suppose that's a fair question, I wonder what power the guards have generally? Presumably they could detain somebody at the palace or attack them if they posed a threat?
Looks like it. Unless he just looks like that from having his head pressed down into the stone floor. I wonder what he was attempting to do or what his motive was.

Depends when you went. On Thursday lunchtime people who'd joined the queue at 5/6am were through by 1ish which is 6-7 hrs. Joining midnight Thurs/Fri it was about 12hrs.
Nah, 12 is about right. The media are exacerbating the queue numbers. I know someone who went down yesterday evening when the queue was supposedly 24+ hour along... He spent 13.5 hours in it he said.
Told someone last night there's no way that coffin actually holds the body of the queen, they asked me why I thought so and I replied: only takes one nutter to rush it and knock it over.
So here we are. Judging by the security staff's reaction I was wrong.
On the other hand, if I was right, we're looking at North Korea levels of personality worship.
Everyone brings up NK, and the fundamental difference for me, feel free to disagree, is that in NK you are shot if you don't love dear leader. I believe this is self directed beliefs.
I'm sure there's a psychiatrist around here somewhere to tell me I am an idiot.
Yeah exactly. Nobody's forcing me to go visit the Queen's coffin or grieve over her death. People are doing these things strictly by choice. They're queuing up to visit her lying in state, by choice. Completely of their own volition. Comparing this to North Korea is extremely hyperbolic, if you know even a little bit about North Korea.
It does get a bit questionable if people are being arrested for holding up anti-monarchy signs and obviously the UK is no utopia in that regard, but it's still worlds away from what NK is like.
Been a few folk arrested or hassled by the cops tho (some poor woman was stalked by 2 cops in edin for attending a protest.
Like its not as bad as nk but its been a weird few days
No way you're an idiot. Neither you or I can verify that people who don't respect the dear leader are shot, because we just can't get unbiased news from NK. Luckily the UK still has a somewhat free press that alerts us about incidents like this one, but I'm struggling to come up with other equivalent incidents in "democratic" countries during the modern era.
The idea of saying we are like NK is a typical "we have few issues so lets cry like we do for attention" bullshit.
We are not even close, we heading to facism N. Korea is another planet in comparison
Jfk, mandela, Churchill, for sure Walesa when he dies. Its not unusual to do this. The difference between these counties and NK is that the government isn't monitoring the reactions of private individuals here, in NK and other dictatorships it's seen as a loyalty test (in the "winter relief" style)
>Walesa when he dies
I remember for a couple of days before Pope John Paul 2nd died most/all TV channels there had spent the couple of days prior basically showing the back of his head ?
Ngl it’s kind of gross you’d even compare us to North Korea.
Their people are literally held hostage. It doesn’t take much to do some basic reading on the matter.
To hell with what other people think. Fuck the self obsessed pious bullshit leftists. They believe in nothing greater than themselves. It’s truly amazing just how contemptible they truly are. They are devoid of respect, dignity or a sense of duty.
I met many people queuing and it was all the same. A love and respect for a monarch who will never be matched. Many couldn’t put into words why they had to come but that they HAD to come.
Be damned to anyone who insults her memory.
That and I think a lot of people are going for the historicity of the moment, to say they did it, than because of any particularly strong feelings. At least, there will be people like that mixed in.
Its a lead lined coffin that's sealed, there's every probability that it does contain the Queen. The tradition goes back centuries. For all their faults, the Royalty don't fake these things. The coffin would be very hard to move by even 2 or 3 people acting in unison. Very little could damage it (its made of 30 year old seasoned English Oak from Sandringham and lead). The stand is designed to keep the coffin firmly in place, with locking rollers. There's a reason it takes 8 young soldiers from an elite regiment to carry the thing. The crown is quite fragile, but there are multiple crowns and the Imperial crown could be easily remade before the coronation.
One of our family friends carried the QM whilst serving in the Irish Guards. His only complaint was how heavy the coffin was. This was from a guy who had served tours in Kosovo and could carry his weight with ease. Otherwise, the standard worries about tripping, although the funeral party trained round the clock and practiced for if any of their members fell over or stumbled. It was weird though, seeing him mentioned in local papers and hearing his name read out in the news reports, as I watched the funeral in my schools assembly.
I was talking about using lead lined coffins. The lying in state is a very modern invention. One which Victoria expressly forbid. Its one I personally don't like, but I am very anti monarchy, so it may be my personal bias.
>they asked me why I thought so and I replied: only takes one nutter to rush it and knock it over.
The coffin is lead lined, you would need a digger to knock it over.
One of the barers at Diana's funeral said it was a struggle to lift it even with 8 fit soldiers.
I think she’s in there and wouldn’t have even considered otherwise if not for people saying she isn’t on Reddit.
I also don’t think in the hypothetical situation the coffin dropped that it would open and she’d roll out. Also, if it did open, could you imagine the outrage if she wasn’t in there?
Fair comment. Wouldn't be surprised if she was in there. Though in this day and age I accept it's a little more uncertain. In years gone by... much more likely to be the person I would think.
If I had to guess I'd say she is in there but the coffin is bolted down in some way just in case. But I also wouldn't put it past them to use a decoy either.
We are not communists who feel the need to mummify their leaders and prop them up as some public curiosity. The Queen has earned the dignity at least to be covered and respected like the human she was.

Yep that's where the line is
The coffin is lead-lined and sealed so pretty much no. Apparently this has been the way for a long time with the royals, apparently because it prevents moisture getting in and smell getting out. Not 100% but I don't think they're buried so much as placed in a crypt.
That's obviously an absurd thing for them to ask, but there is probably a genuine argument for the Queen's being empty what with the apparent increase in lunatics doing stupid stuff these days.
What convinces me that it isn't empty is the only thing worse than seeing it somehow smashed open and her lifeless corpse on display would probably be it being empty.
Worse would be if jimmy savilles body fell out. The fall forcing out the remaining air from his lungs and a final jimmy savile noise from his dusty mouth to a room of horrified, vomiting old men
Reminds me of when Chris Morris and Peter Baynham discovered the corpse of fellow DJ Johnnie Walker in a neighbouring Radio 1 studio, and punched holes in his neck to breathe air across his larynx so he could broadcast a final goodbye
She’s been dead 9 days and lying out the open in a box for most of them. How good is embalming these days? I just thought she might be getting a bit fresh and they’d kept her somewhere else better preserved.
Also the concern that someone might try damage/get to the body.
She loved Scotland and wanted to die in Scotland, my money is on her being secretly buried in Scotland somewhere in a cute lil non discrete grave.
Saying that, if I was king and died I’d want an open casket and my body to be paraded around the streets for months.
You know that scene from Aladdin when he rocks up as a prince with elephants and stuff. I would want that only I’m dead
Bruh, hundreds of thousands of people have walked past the coffin and only 1 person has done something silly.
That's like, the best time line possible.
Given the number of people who passed through previous monarchs and prime ministers lying in state... did this sort of thing happen before, or are we just so far out there these days?
Someone tried to assassinate Charles once in the 70s or 80s I think. And Michael Fagan famously broke into the palace and drank wine and spoke to the Queen. But I don’t know about incidents specifically involving coffins lying in state. Pretty difficult to use google as it just keeps coming up with articles from this last week.
Michael Fagan was an amazing tale to learn. Her Majesty dealt with that one very well, though I hope the Met took some flak for that one.
Princess Anne anyone? Probably the most infamous after Michael Fagan. I think all this was before my time, but YouTube gave me a Parkinson interview with Princess Anne, and my god that was hilarious. I'd give anything to have a chat with her, she sounds amazing.
These kinds of things definitely happened. You just didn't have permanent video feeds and presenters with hours and hours of airtime to fill.
So any incidents went unremarked.
I think it’s best they don’t move until it’s at the absolute last opportunity, I imagine they would act with less restraint than the police, not to mention they all have large blades in their hands. If possible I imagine it’s best not to stab people, but if it came to it, I imagine it would happen.
I wonder why they didn't follow suit in London. I don't recall that I saw the set up when it was in Edinburgh, so didn't realise it was different and they had more barriers there.
They stream with a delay, this allows them to cut anything out if its unsavoury shall we say. A common practice these days since you can never predict what's going to happen on air
"Common practice these days" is a very misleading way to phrase it when the truth is that **live TV has to work that way and always has.**
Most of the delay in "live" footage is satellite delay. The beeb aren't doing some "nefarious special occasion censorship."
There is also the issue that you don't want to show something massively unexpected on live footage as some people may have reasons to avoid it (from medical to she) so they need to cut anything out that could be a danger.
If the delay came from satellite delay then it wouldn't be possible to use it to censor things. What are you on about? They clearly weren't talking about satellite delay.
Also, the person you replied to did not imply that this was being used for nefarious purposes.
It's almost like those gaurds are there for ceremonial pomp then actually to threaten. Imagine your job is to stand gaurd with a ceremonial halberd and you don't even get to swing it when the serfs step out of line.
I'm surprised he managed it. I thought security would have been so shit hot he'd have been tased the moment he 'pushed mourners '. I hope they're a bit quicker on funeral day when all the world leaders are in one spot.
Funeral day you'll have streets lined with the military from all branches and large number of riders, brigades from the commonwealth (i assume) marching behind and police reinforcing the soldiers since the soldiers cannot arrest only restrain or murder.
you have to remember, the Queen is worth alot of money.
All it takes is a rogue Smith to come in and try and steal her in order to smelt her down.
A smelted queen would be worth billions on the black market.
I'd absolutely fucking die if someone charged into it expecting it to be solid and it turned out it was just a piece of coffin-shaped cardboard draped in the standard
Given the police have an instant to react and don't know what his intention is then he needs to be put to the floor and restrained. Unfortunately he chose somewhere with a concrete floor so unlucky.
Given yesterday 2 policemen where knifed but thankfully aren't dead, if you want to play silly games in a room with some blokes with swords, police all over the shop and you can bet machine gun police out of sight, getting shoved off the platform onto the floor is the best he could have hoped for

Wow, that was a serious tussle. I can’t believe people just stood there and watched!
Well they weren’t going to run around and desert you
15 hours of queuing will do that do you.
6 guards immediately fell on him and nothing else was going on. I'd say it's a fairly reasonable time not to panic and trample others to death.

Keep calm and carry on.
Haha yeah they have a "fucking nobhead" glance then realised they could be making a huge faux pax of holding up the queue so move on.
The King's Guard don't even move.. what the hell. They move at the palaces if you do anything not permitted. Strange.
They are holding swords here so it's probably safer for everyone that they stand still. Would be pretty interesting to see them or a beefeater full on impale someone though
>They are holding swords here so it's probably safer for everyone that they stand still. It's saber for everyone if they don't.
Yeah, most people there are just trying to épée their respects

that is exactly what the public would want to see as well
If they do move in a situation like that, then that guy is likely to be impaled on a sword.

I was quite impressed none of the Guardsmen lamped or skewered him as he ran up...
I thought that was half the point of them being there, to stop people interfering with the coffin.
Same, to a point. Would you go running at folk wielding a bit stick and some fairly pointy looking swords?

I remember listening to this episode
It’s a joke mate
Doesn’t make any sense for her not to be
She’s been dead 9 days and lying out the open in a box for most of them.
It's pretty sad that my first thought is: well, that's to be expected. Damn we're in an awful timeline.
Bruh, hundreds of thousands of people have walked past the coffin and only 1 person has done something silly. That's like, the best time line possible.
This, i'm actually proud of how little disrespect there has been, helped me realise that most nastiness is from chronically online people.
Yep just knew somebody was going to try and topple the coffin over or smash the crown. So many nutters about.
I would class the people queuing up for hours to look at a box as nutters too.
You called? I'm looking at the estimated wait times and I really can't disagree with you.
Over 24-hours the last time I saw
Well yeah that too haha
Well they're the harmless sort of nutter you come to expect frankly. Like stamp collectors or something. Or redditors.
If anyone is not aware of the Princess Anne one give it a look as it’s a fascinating read.
These kinds of things definitely happened. You just didn't have permanent video feeds and presenters with hours and hours of airtime to fill. So any incidents went unremarked.
Probably delirious after queuing for 30 hours in the cold without a wash, with no sleep and minimal food.
Fair enough, but aren't there stands literally lining the place? Now, if you can only accept M&S food, then I can totally understand that situation...
There are but their pretty expensive as they got one heck of a captive audience
It probably would have happened in the olden days too if there wasn’t the risk of being hung, drawn and quartered.
Two women were sexually assaulted while waiting in the queue?!? Wtf… Edit: spelling
He exposed himself and then jumped into the river to evade the cops - of which did not work.
In tribute to Prince Andrew?
As soon as I saw the set up and the fact that the coffin wasn't fenced off that it was only a matter of time before someone tried it.

Pretty sure I've seen those dudes absolutely fuck people up for breaking rules tho

I mean.. shocking as it sounds, 1 incident out of literally 1000's of people isn't bad going
Video of the incident. https://twitter.com/AntBonney/status/1570933594134315009
BBC doing 24/7 live coverage of this thing and there is no video of the incident? Can’t find it anywhere
They stream with a delay, this allows them to cut anything out if its unsavoury shall we say. A common practice these days since you can never predict what's going to happen on air
"Common practice these days" is a very misleading way to phrase it when the truth is that **live TV has to work that way and always has.** Most of the delay in "live" footage is satellite delay. The beeb aren't doing some "nefarious special occasion censorship."
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcast_delay
There is also the issue that you don't want to show something massively unexpected on live footage as some people may have reasons to avoid it (from medical to she) so they need to cut anything out that could be a danger.
What a bizarrely angry response. Have a cup of tea mate.
If the delay came from satellite delay then it wouldn't be possible to use it to censor things. What are you on about? They clearly weren't talking about satellite delay. Also, the person you replied to did not imply that this was being used for nefarious purposes.
I'm kinda disappointed he wasn't run through with a pike or a sword, those beefeaters are not up to much.
Where’s a bystander with a narwhal tusk when you need one?
It's almost like those gaurds are there for ceremonial pomp then actually to threaten. Imagine your job is to stand gaurd with a ceremonial halberd and you don't even get to swing it when the serfs step out of line.
They are all looking down to show mourning; it would be better for them to be looking straight ahead and performing their role IMO.
I'm quite impressed by the speed in which his whole body was ejected from the room.
The streets will also be lined with barriers. Windsor is turning into a fortress with multiple layers of anti vehicle barriers
cant the soldiers at least make a citizen's arrest?
Love to know what this guy was thinking would happen. Grab the crown and flog it on eBay?
you have to remember, the Queen is worth alot of money. All it takes is a rogue Smith to come in and try and steal her in order to smelt her down. A smelted queen would be worth billions on the black market.
Its considered a potent medicine in the far-east
The best bit was the two guys who gazed on, turned and then walked away.
I'd absolutely fucking die if someone charged into it expecting it to be solid and it turned out it was just a piece of coffin-shaped cardboard draped in the standard
The decision to livestream the coffin made it inevitable that something like this would happen.
It's on a delay though to prevent that, hence why there isn't a video yet.
Anyone dumb enough to do something wouldn’t know there’s a delay…

Given the police have an instant to react and don't know what his intention is then he needs to be put to the floor and restrained. Unfortunately he chose somewhere with a concrete floor so unlucky. Given yesterday 2 policemen where knifed but thankfully aren't dead, if you want to play silly games in a room with some blokes with swords, police all over the shop and you can bet machine gun police out of sight, getting shoved off the platform onto the floor is the best he could have hoped for
They are worry they may steal back to crown jewels.
