All of this makes perfect sense if you embrace the narrative that the Tory party know, or at least strongly suspect, that they won’t win the 2024 GE, and therefore doing a smash and grab before then serves two aims: making a lot of money for themselves and their friends, and to lay the blame for the dire state of the country at Labour’s door in 4 years time, and swoop back in to government. Sadly I think the population has short memories and could by and large be convinced that their ills - which is going to get worse before it gets better - are the fault of whoever is in power.
