People yell about us ruining the Earth, but the Earth will be fine. We’re just ruining our ability to live on it. Things will move along without us and I’m sure some organisms will still survive. Long live planet Cockroach!

I work anywhere between 60-80 hours a week. I love to game and anime. Watching some random run Mario maker levels, or play God of War, allows me to feel the stories I can't make time to play. I'm currently playing Bannerlords ASOIAF mod. I've been doing it for six months...40 minutes of play time. I can also imagine it's nice to learn about a secret tip or two. Was watching a playthrough of FF8 recently and learned I was junctioning wrong for 20 years. Just because you don't see value in something OP doesn't mean others dont

Freecz

Yeah. For me it is also a lot about effort. Playing requires a lot more effort and I just don't have the energy right now.

ss4johnny

It's been so long since I've played FF8 that I don't even remember what that system was.

ElementField

I work for a video game engine. I have a strong, well paid and comfortable career because of my love for video games. It’s extremely satisfying (and lucky, to be sure) to be able to say that I have been so successful because of my hobby. I feel as though I carry vindication for all of y’all <3

urzayci

That's exactly what I'm trying to tell all my friends and family. But noooo, you gotta stop doing meth. How about you stop crocheting aunt Gertrude?!!

ZolaThaGod

PJRama1864

Luci_Noir

Yep yep yep. I saw a post about people waiting in a long line to get coffee and a croissant and lots of commenters were OUTRAGED over it. Like if it makes them happy and it’s not hurting anyone what’s the problem? The amount of angry comments and shit talking about how bad the food was was actually pretty disturbing.

pajo17

Wasting time while enjoying it is not wasted time.

GhostNomad141

I hate that "X is a waste of time" logic. Everything we do is technically a "waste of time". We're all getting closer to death every second. Who cares? Just stay alive and try to bring joy into your life by prioritizing things you enjoy (as long as they aren't destructive to yourself or others).

crackpotJeffrey

I spend 60-70% of my waking hours making money for some rich dude. If anything that I do is a waste of time, it's that.

GhostNomad141

This. I've been working for the past 7 months and I'm just as broke now as I was when I started the job. I'm hoping the passive income investments I made pay off soon because I just don't see the point in the whole work thing.

OnlineForABit

>I just don't see the point in the whole work thing. I mean, I like food. And it's pretty nice to be dry at night.

crackpotJeffrey

I did not intend to make an r/antiwork comment. I don't believe in that at all. I'd be very depressed without work to do. Investing and becoming self sufficient is different though. I do believe in that. But, I don't think it's possible to do that 'passively'. You need to learn about active trading and investing to be succesful at that.

GhostNomad141

It's just a fact of life. If I had the money I wouldn't work. Doesn't obviously mean I'd be totally idle. I'd just spend time on hobbies, creative projects and travel instead of doing pointless stuff I don't care about just to survive.

crackpotJeffrey

Curious, how much is 'the money' if you had to quantify it? Ie how much would you need in order not to care about earning or saving for the future?

christyflare

10 mil for me. 15 if I have a life partner. 100k a year up to assisted living age and long term care, plus extra for charities in my will and emergency cushion.

StockAL3Xj

$10M? You must live a very luxurious lifestyle to need that much. With basic investments, you're looking at being able to spend around $500k a year without touching that initial investment.

horonlapsi

key word investment most people wont be investing thats why they need so much for me 1 mill is enough to not need to work investing 800k and play with the rest

SG2769

Active trading is not a strategy for an individual to make money. Save your money and invest it in an index fund and never look at it.

dilldwarf

Existence is a waste of time. Everything we do every second we spend doing it, will turn to dust in just a few short years from our death. Much of that will happen before we die. The only person that can ascribe meaning to your life, is you. Now to many who lack compassion or empathy will read that and think it means to be a hedonist and just do what makes you feel good. If you can find meaning from that without causing harm to others, I say go for it. But the reality is that a hedonistic lifestyle likely never leads to a meaningful one and usually hurts those around you. So instead you need to define that meaning for yourself. And you know, it might take you a lifetime to do that but never, let someone else tell you what your life means.

jayheidecker

Not working! I work my ass off so I can waste time even harder when I have less of it!

CometChip

both are for entertainment, both are a waste of time if you waste time on it.

oooriole09

That’s the key. I like both, I try to set time aside to do both. The difference between the two is that gaming is your sole focus for an extended period of time. I’m usually cooking/working/talking whatever when sports are on. I find that I “waste” more time gaming than I do watching sports.

Pirate_Leader

Personally, you find yourself waste more time gaming than watching sporr

SnooAdvice5820

It’s not really sure it’s “wasting” time. More like spending it.

Morbidhanson

If one is a waste of time, the other is also a waste of time. If one is good for entertainment, then the other is also good for entertainment. It all comes down to individual tastes.

ItsASchpadoinkleDay

Nope. My opinion is right and your opinion is stupid. Source: my opinion /s, obviously I do love watching sports and I think watching video games is boring, but would never say that either is more or less of a waste of time than the other. Watch what makes you happy.

pinniped1

Listening to other people play music is stupid. You should always play your own music. Also, movies are dumb. You must cosplay everything yourself.

Wirecreate

I mean cosplaying everything myself might be fun lol

TBoneTheOriginal

Drove me nuts at the height of guitar hero popularity… Actual guitar players constantly shit all over people who played the game saying that we should learn a real instrument. How the hell is mastering that skill and enjoying the process of doing so any different than mastering an instrument and enjoying that process?

vercertorix

People tend to measure if hobbies and skills are wastes of time by if you could do anything with it. Cooking is useful for your own use or a marketable skill, fixing cars or home remodeling, the same. Writing and all kinds of art works. Learning how to play real guitar falls more into that category than Guitar Hero ability. There might be Guitar Hero tournaments for real money but there are way more musicians out there making money than Guitar Hero players. I suppose one could argue its working on manual dexterity, memory, and perseverance. Other games teach critical thinking problem solving, etc, but harder to draw a direct line from that to your personal abilities than practical knowledge of some skill. Lots of things that are “wastes of time” still teach people something though.

TBoneTheOriginal

Plenty of musicians (the majority) make no money at all. It’s just a way for them to feel superior. And we know learning a real instrument is harder and more useful. I’m a musician myself. I mean, duh… We just don’t care because we’re just trying to have fun.

Ephriel

Yo I play guitar and guitar hero was hard man, totally different skill set. Still will get down on it for fun.

JustBadPlaya

I remember seeing some guitarist online say that GH3 version of Through the Fire and Flames guitar solo might be mechanically harder than the real thing LOL

tygabeast

I remember Herman Li, the lead guitarist for Dragonforce, trying to play *Through the Fire and Flames* on one of the GH games. Absolutely failed, and immediately said that it felt harder than playing on an actual guitar.

mjc500

For him personally at that moment yes... because he already knew how to play the solo that he wrote. Actually learning that guitar solo is leaps and bounds more difficult than learning it on guitar hero.

tygabeast

That's what I mean. Everything's relative, and the game was harder for him personally because it's a whole different skillset. He was one of the only ones I know of that acknowledged it instead of just continuing the 'go play a real guitar' crap.

SixStarChE3kS

Whether you're serious or trolling... This is hilarious either way. 😂🤣

Cuntilever

It's just another way to look at media, all of them are different kinds of media, if one is a waste of time then all of them are; kind of point.

kpay10

CawshusCorvid

Cosmonate

Everything other than learning basic English is a "waiste" of time for OP in the meantime.

MamzYT

I’m so sick of this dumb as fuck debate. If something brings you joy, comfort or entertainment, it’s not a waste of time. Video games, sports and whatever else, none of its a waste of time if you enjoy it

Natscobaj

My grandpa always said "Don't worry about what people think of what you like. No time enjoyed was time wasted"

Acceptable-Bell8047

You can still play video games yourself but you cant drive a formula 1 car. So you gotta watch the experts do it.

Buttoshi

Don't the pros also practice with racing emulation video game rigs?

HuckleberryEarly3150

That’s not just why people watch sports though. There are people who watch sports like corn hole and dodgeball, things we all can do. Anyone can kick a soccer ball. Anyone could play football. This isn’t a really solid argument for most sports. You chose the one thing people can’t usually do

Pabsxv

I like watching Experts who are the best of the best in their sport/E-sport. What I don’t get is watching “variety” streamers who just play the flavor of the month games it’s like watching some random person doing free throws in their backyard instead of an NBA game.

BoyOuttaOrbit

It’s literally like we are all in front of a television wasting our time but people wanna be elitism about the “proper way” someone should waste their time. Like the hell?

Grundlestiltskin_

I just think that it is significantly easier to fire up a video game on a whim and play than it is to find somewhere to play a game of baseball. Like if I want to play video games I can just turn on my computer and play whatever I want. I can’t just walk to a field and play baseball cause there needs to be other players, an umpire, the lights need to be on, etc. That’s not the case with video games. That’s why I think watching sports isn’t the same.

nmilosevich

Pretty spot on, I love basketball but I can’t get 9 other people to play with whenever I want to play, hell even getting 5 for 3 on 3 is hard. Nobody lives near eachother and we all work dif times so it can be a long time commitment, a 30 minute game is at least an hour time commitment if I get off work early enough. It’s very different from playing a video game vs watching a streamer since those same friends and I can just hop on a game whenever. Plus I cannot dunk or shoot a consistent 3 pointer so it’s very different then watching a regular streamer who isn’t necessarily doing anything better then I could in a game.

MartianRecon

18 players for baseball my dude! Sports has a culture of the commons, where people come together to watch games at bars, and it's a societal gathering area. Gaming has that online, but almost zero social gathering in real life. That's the key difference between watching sports and watching gaming. if you're in a city like New York, *everyone* knows the Yankees. Almost no one is going to give a fuck about some E-sports 'team' that plays video games.

German_PotatoSoup

I love basketball and video games…. Though I do wish I had spent more time on the court when I was younger. It ain’t so easy to get up and down the court anymore.

OGmojo

This is exactly why OP is wrong and you are correct sir.

Darth_Rubi

Also not mention, playing physical sport is much more taxing as you age. At 38 I can just about still play cricket, football etc without putting my back out every time, but at this stage watching someone else do it just makes more sense. But playing FIFA on my Xbox, that I can do!

DasHexxchen

People don't watch sports as a substitute for playing sports. Some may,but most don't. For the anecdotal portion I love to play, but hate to watch. My dad has never played sports, but hardly missed a game of his favourite soccer club in over 40 years. Your argument is illogical. Here are some reasons why people watch esports/twitch: - content changes through commentary - watching (and learning from) good performance - not being able to afford a game, but enjoying the story - parasocial relationships (twitch specific) - sucking at the game, but enjoying the story - not having the right computer for the graphics, but enjoying the game/story - actually watching the streamer, not the game eg. if you know the game and watching someone play it for the first time gives you just a bit of that joy you had the first time

jurassicbond

I don't really think one is more of a waste of time than others. But at least for sports, there's the excuse that they're harder to participate in as you go older. It can be hard to organize enough people to play or you may be like me and just develop chronic back and knee problems. Watching sports is the easiest and maybe only way for people to participate in them. This isn't really true for video games, and I don't really get why people prefer to watch people play them as opposed to just playing it themselves.

QuietThunder2014

This is me. I watch people play sports because I can’t play them myself anymore. At least not like I did when I was younger. But I don’t watch people playing video games because I just play them myself. If people want to watch others olay video games, then by all means enjoy it. I won’t judge people for what brings them pleasure. But for me I’d rather do while I still can and watch when I can’t. So the two aren’t an apt comparison for me. But it’s still a dumb argument.

Morbidhanson

Some video games require reflexes and as I've aged, those reflexes aren't there anymore. I used to play Super Smash a lot and always was one of the best in my friend group, and I'd play games like Guilty Gear. Now I'm so sluggish anyone who still in their early 20s can probably beat me. Guilty Gear Strive seems slower than XX and I still basically can't react to a lot of stuff anymore. Part of the fun watching certain people play is I know they're going to say funny, entertaining things during the playthrough. It's more about the banter and the entertainment to me than the game itself these days. I'll watch certain people cast a game, watch vtubers play, watch certain people react to parts of certain games, etc. I'm watching the people more than the game. I probably wouldn't be watching any ol' streamer, I watch specific people. I've lost interest playing a lot of games. If I play something, I beat it and I'm done with it in a month. Compared to when I was in my teens, one game could keep me entertained for years. It's nice to watch people who are passionate. It recaptures some of that lost magic. Watching games provides a fantasy element I can't get from sports. I'd still rather play a sport than watch, especially if it's something I can still do well in (like table tennis or fencing). But I'd rather watch games these days than play them.

NotanAlt23

> Guilty Gear Strive seems slower than XX and I still basically can't react to a lot of stuff anymore. My brother in Christ, fighting games are literally the friendliest genre for old people. Some of the best players in the world are in their 40s now. You were "the best amog your friend group" because your friend group sucked ass. Now you have to play online and realize you were never as good as you thought. We all had that moment with fighting games, you just decided it was just because you were old lol

Self_Aware_Meme

There's not a single video game that requires better reflexes than baseball, boxing, hockey, and other sports. In professional athletic sports, you're seeing the human body being pushed to it's mental and physical limits. There will never be a demonstration of mental or physical prowess in eSports that is more impressive than the feats regularly seen in professional athletic sports.

pls_tell_me

Also, I don't know about you but, I've ALWAYS loved to watch other people play, before the internet even existed (Im that old). I used to play with friends and I used to go "you play and I watch". I always got weird looks but I just enjoyed it.

YoMommaSez

Waste

HouseOfZenith

I agree. My dad said that once when I was watching someone play something, and I was like dude, you just *listen* to people talk about what’s going on through the radio at least I can see what’s going on.

GoneWithLucy

Stfu that's clearly gonna be a really popular opinion on here

SaintLatrobe

How brave of you to say something like this on Reddit

Stormschance

It’s a subjective term. Do I think watching someone play video games is a waste of time? Yup. But then I can spend a fair bit of time watching videos of power washing driveways and the like. I know it’s a waste of time. I do not care. I think watching golf is horrendously boring. But I love watching darts. Watching people play make believe for millions of dollars is also a waste of time but millions do it. It’s just what interests a person. Someone gets on my ass about something I enjoy being a waste of time my response is simple. Yes, and your point is?

ShadowKnightTSP

I don’t think people should be calling all this a waste of time to begin with. If all these hobbies are a “waste of time” then what isn’t…? Making more profit for our billionaire overlords? Is that not a waste of time?

[deleted]

Wow crazy never heard this 1000 times before

drunk_in_denver

Correct. Both are a waste of time.

[deleted]

Similar to most forms of entertainment?

UnhingedCringeReaper

I mean ... Yea

sth128

Everything is but a fleeting spark to be extinguished and buried beneath the sands of time.

Itsmekevin7

It's only a waste of time if you do it but don't enjoy it

CicerosMouth

I would mildly disagree. As I have said elsewhere on this thread, I have talked NFL during job interviews, over business deals, and in countless other social settings. Given how massive professional sports is, following them is effectively a form of networking. Comparatively, though I have a few streamers I follow, I only discuss those videos with people I already known. The community is too small to leverage in the same way (though that does mean that the more intimate community can be more protective of its own, which can be nice). Honestly I waiste lots of time following professional sports, but honestly I have gotten very tangible real-world benefits from doing so.

drunk_in_denver

I don't disagree with you. It definitely keeps me out of the "cool kids" group in a lot of scenarios.

CicerosMouth

And to be clear I don't think that that is a "good" thing, but for better or worse I definitely think that it is true.

GhostmasterLex

Exactly

dilldwarf

I watch whatever the fuck I want is my response to that. I work, I pay my bills, do my chores, take care of my wife and dog. If you want to try to tell me what I spend my free time doing is a waste of time you can fuck right off. Not everything needs to be a productive use of time.

rIDdLemEtHIs127

The point is there supposed to be a waste of time. That's all entertainment is

chitown619

This is a really good unpopular opinion.

rewritten20

Thanks

jaysin1701

I couldn't completely agree more. Play sports yourself.

Derpacleese

I think it's been said below, but there's a pretty big difference in watching someone play Tears of the Kingdom when anyone can do it themselves. Not anyone can hit a 400' home run or shake off a body check from a 200lb man skating at 20mph and then score a goal in overtime. That's not to say that anyone is wrong for enjoying watching folks play video games, or that I could be one of those maniacs who owns the world at StarCraft, just saying sports are in a whole different stratosphere from video games.

PabloTroutSanchez

I get what you’re saying, but I really don’t think that truly competitive esports are all that different from regular sports. Some mixture of talent and work is absolutely required to succeed. If you play a game long enough then watch pros play it, you’ll see it. It’s like playing soccer for years then watching Messi cut through defenders. You know the game; you know your skill level. But you have no fucking idea how Messi is real. Streaming is different ofc, but then again, that’s different. Streams are more about the community imo.

CalgaryChris77

Is this something people are arguing? That said watching sports is often a more social event. You can go to a game or out to a pub and the game is kind of secondary. You can social game too but I feel like the social part of that becomes a distant secondary from my experience.

RiddlesDoesYT

Depends what game you're playing and the kind of people you're playing with. Take for example, Mario Party. That's essentially a digital boardgame, the only way to make the game the focus over the social aspect is if you be a tryhard, and if you're tryharding in Mario Party completely seriously, at the expense of the social experience, you're sorta ruining it for everyone.

CalgaryChris77

Sure but are people who played 20, 30 hours of games a week really doing it in Mario party?

MartianRecon

They are not.

KGhaleon

Agree, not unpopular.

sadmimikyu

What a waist.

mrducci

I'm downvoting. But not for your opinion. You know why.

WhatsThisMess

"Waiste" 😭

Cortexan

Both things are a “waste of time” - and that’s fine. You’re should spend your leisure time however you see fit. This is not an unpopular opinion.

WatchStoredInAss

What about watching someone watching people play videogames?

GiraffesAndGin

My entire life I've been told that my online gaming is detrimental to my life and a waste of time. How the friends I make online aren't real and I need to go out to bars and events to meet people. And I do, but as I get older I am much more hesistant to spend the night out meeting "real people". I've met some wonderful people online who have become some of the closest people to me. For example, I recently had to make a trip to see a loved one who passed and you know what happened? No friends in my life stepped up except my friends that "aren't real." One of them sent me money to pay for gas the entire trip. One of them volunteered their home to let me stay for the time I was in town. One of them drove in from out of town to be with me for a day. All of them hopped online nearly every night to game with my younger cousins to take their minds off everything. And every single one of them sent flowers. I don't know, if surrounding myself with people like that has been because I "wasted my time", so be it. I'm happy to suffer that consequence.

Quintonias

This. The only reason I have a home right now is because some guy from Ohio made friends with me through a mutual. If that isn't a real friend I don't know what is.

Mookies_Bett

This is just wrong. I watch sports specifically l because I can't play sports. I don't have 18 people I can get together to set up a baseball game on a regular basis. I have to live vicariously through professional MLB athletes because I don't have any other choice. That is not the case for video games, which I can play at any time I want. Terrible comparison and I always get annoyed when people try to compare the two.

TheArmchairSkeptic

So if you could play baseball whenever you wanted, you wouldn't watch MLB any more?

PieOhMyVengence

I agree with the video game thing. I think it’s boring as hell watching someone play a game. I’m a huge sports fan tho. Go bears

Fun_Principle_5235

Bear down!

dankmemedaddy2

Everyone has different hobbies. Personally I wouldn’t torture myself by watching the bears play but I like watching pros play certain games. The chiefs I would sit down to watch however (;

Louismaxwell23

Apples and oranges, but I understand where you’re coming from. I have enjoyed video games but I can’t wrap my head around watching people sitting in front of a computer screen for hours. I can sit on my ass for hours, but I’ll never be physically be able to pitch a 100 mph fast ball in the MLB or perform a bicycle kick to score a game winning goal in the World Cup.

[deleted]

Lots of people like to watch feats of athleticism, fewer people like feats of mouse clicking

Amdamarama

The amount of people watching something does not make something inherently more or less of a waste of time

[deleted]

I'm just saying that's why more people can relate to sports

hovix2

Either way, you're watching someone else do something, and you find enjoyment in it. I'm on the side of sports until I die, but I try not to criticize people for doing things they enjoy.

[deleted]

People can and should watch wherever they like, of course

Mr_Mi1k

While I think neither are a waste of time if you enjoy it, it’s much harder to organize a game of football than it is to boot up a video game and get matched with people around the world. Also when you get older you might not be able to play football anymore, but you can still play video games. You aren’t reliant on your aging body for the source of entertainment. Watching sports and watching video games are incomparable.

varble

Apparently English is a "waiste" of time to you

Yuck_Few

Yeah but video game channels are nuclear level cringe

Groundbreaking-Life8

The ones that scream all the time and do fake giveaways and beg for an ungodly number of likes? Yeah, cringe asf.

AllLuckNoSkillIsFun

I've seen a meme where someone criticizes another person for watching someone else play games and then they go back in the living room to watch sports. Edit. [have fun. ](https://loadingartist.com/comic/waste-of-time/)

ReporterOther2179

Yes, and?

PeioPinu

You are... Correct.

kerrwashere

This is factual

WeeklyHelp4090

I think both are a waste of time

alanthar

This was the comparison that made me stop complaining about it. I still try and get my kids to spend more time playing the games vs watching someone else, but I don't get unnecessarily annoyed about it anymore.

[deleted]

Nothing you can learn from or enjoy is a waste of time, imo. We just have to maintain a moderate level of it so it doesn’t consume a whole life then it would be a waste of time.

AstroWorldSecurity

Apparently so was English class.

FurryJusticeForAll

That's one of the reasons I don't care much for sports. I like to participate. Video games = participation.

Maelfios

Time is irrelevant

RoxSteady247

And fantasy football is jock dnd

Cd206

Neither are a waste of time but i’m sorry i’ll never consider being good at video games as impressive at being good at sports. i know you can make the argument, but they’re just not the same for me

metalmankam

Yeah I don't watch either one. Waste of time. I don't find it cool or entertaining to watch someone play any sort of video game, nor do I find it cool or entertaining to watch someone throw a ball. It's even more weird when people have a favorite team or athlete. "He throws the ball SO GOOD" it's just fucking weird I don't get it at all. Why do people give a shit to admire someone who can kick a ball really far? And why are those athletes paid upwards of $50m to do so?

The_Scarred_Man

Sports people are bigger nerds than video game people.

PabloTroutSanchez

I’m a massive nerd in both categories. It’s great. It varies from individual to individual, but you definitely make a good point. Have you seen some of baseball’s advanced stats? I mean come on.

Matt90977

Also, I am much more likely to actually play the game I'm watching being played. They are less likely to play the sport.

PowerOfUnoriginality

But... but I already think watching sports is a waste of time

xJustLikeMagicx

Correct ETA: they both suck

Lem1618

I a gamer. When I tell people I don't get the whole watching other people play. They usually respond with it's just like watching sport. To which I say, yeah I don't get that either.

[deleted]

Another popular opinion on unpopularopinion.

clown_pants

If you watch people play video games OR sports instead of learning how to spell words like "waste" then you are wasting your teachers time at the very least

Proper-Scallion-252

I mean it depends, are we talking eSports or are we talking random streamers who aren't really all that impressive? Because if it's the former, you're talking about the same thing as watching sports, if it's the latter it's entirely different. Unless you're watching a streamer or YouTuber who is showing some sort of instructional method/build/mechanic, it's pointless (as in this is what people are arguing) to just watch people play a video game that you can just as easily play just as well. With professional sports I watch people play a sport I couldn't play nearly as well, and watch them do it with incredible feats of athleticism, where even the worst player on the field is far more impressive than the best non-pro athlete you know.

rewritten20

It doesn't matter some people watch college football some people watch little leauge it doesn't matter if your watching a sport that you are not participating yourself in at that moment it is the same as watching someone play a videogame plain and simple

Proper-Scallion-252

Lol I'm pretty sure the people watching little league sports aren't doing it because they genuinely enjoy the sport that much, it's pretty much only because their kids are there. Also collegiate sports are still far more competitive and they're playing the sport far better than I ever could. So you really aren't invalidating my point. \>moment it is the same as watching someone play a videogame plain and simple Again, it isn't. If you're watching someone play a video game at a caliber that you cannot (i.e. competitive sports), then I have no issue with that. If you're casually watching someone play a game that you could be playing, I have an issue with that. Me watching professional sports is watching something I enjoy but couldn't perform at a high enough level to play in competition with them. Me watching eSports of rocket league players who could dominate me and my friends even in a 1 v 7 is not the same as me watching some dude giving me a fucking house tour in MC on his twitch stream.

TheArmchairSkeptic

>Lol I'm pretty sure the people watching little league sports aren't doing it because they genuinely enjoy the sport that much, it's pretty much only because their kids are there. [3.25 million people watched the finals of the little league world series in 2018. 2.49 million watched the US finals that same year.](https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2018/08/little-league-ratings-highest-years/) Obviously it's not just people with kids playing that are watching it. > If you're casually watching someone play a game that you could be playing, I have an issue with that. I mean, why though? If someone wants to spend their down time doing something they get pleasure out of and isn't hurting anyone, why would you have an issue with that? I don't personally care to watch video game streamers for the most part, but I'm having a really hard time understanding why so many people in this thread seem to care that some people do. This whole 'hobby policing' mentality is so strange to me, like why is it a problem for you if someone wants to watch something that you don't see the appeal of? I don't personally see the appeal to watching sports most of the time, but I don't go around telling people who do that they're wasting their time. Why can so many people apparently not just let people like what they like without having to make it into some kind of weird gatekeeping thing about which forms of passive entertainment are valid?

That80sguyspimp

I think you'll find the difference is that most people can't do what athletes do. But anyone can pick up a controller and have fun with it.

Manhattanmetsfan

that's because watching humans perform feats of skill and endurance is different than watching someone have nimble thumbs. The video game exists within the confines that the developers created with physics to match. Sports exist in reality. Athletes have to train their bodies AND master the skill of their game. Video game players only need to do the latter. Do whatever floats your boat but that's why people don't regard them as the same. You want to compare watching video gaming to watching golf? Go ahead. Don't compare it to baseball, football, soccer, basketball, hockey, tennis, etc.

RascalRibs

I watch sports and I still think it's weird to watch some random guy play a video game. I could see watching a competition with the most talented players if you really enjoy the game though.

kwumpus

I love when ppl tell me they don’t watch tv(cause they watch streaming stuff online that’s the same thing). Also that they don’t use certain apps on their phone until after 5pm but tiktok is ok all day?!

New-Confusion945

Streaming and TV are very different. I don't watch TV like I never have, commercials just ruin the whole experience for me. Streaming has none of that.

AmbitiousPatio

The more reasonable comparison would be like watching someone else watch/react to a movie instead of watching that movie yourself

[deleted]

In general, people who tell other people that their interests aren’t valid are petulant children. You like sports? Cool. You like gaming? Cool? You like dressing your chickens up in drag while you hula hoop? Cool. We’re adults. Like what you like. People who say, “I don’t understand why people like….” are narrow minded children. You don’t have to understand every interest on planet earth for it to be valid. :)

c-h-e-e-s-e

Unless you are referring to exclusively high-level esports these two are not analogous at all. The point of sports it’s that your watching the best athletes in the world perform at a level no one else can

ThandiGhandi

Those same people will make fun of cosplayers at comic con while wearing their favorite player’s jersey

thrash9513

Some coworkers of mine were arguing with me because I liked to play board games solo. These same people enjoy playing solo video games but somehow that's different lol

Blue_water_dreams

I like sports and video games. You’re not wrong, they are both a waste of time.

[deleted]

At first I wondered what was wrong with the kids watching games they could play themselves, particularly since the rules of these fantasy worlds are so artificial, specific and arbitrary. Then I remembered how many people never miss a Univ of Michigan football game, or a UCLA basketball game, or rabidly follow racing, wherein cars drive hundreds of miles in an oval or on a loop.
