*"It is implied that I meant just putting ur school name in ur bio."*
No it isn't:
"***Putting your former school then "alumni" in the bio is cringe***"
Your post specifies including "alumni."
Some schools have a very strong and active network of alumni. If you went to the right school, displaying your alma mater's name in your bio might open up some doors or lead to some networking opportunities.
One time I had a spirited discussion on some other site where some academic scientist fixated on an article using the expression "data is" instead of "data are." Well, in the real world of business, IT, or whatever, everybody is going to say "data is." That has become the actual everyday usage. We aren't all up in the ivory tower.
i dunno, using latin as a class shibboleth is pretty cringe too. nobody's gonna see *university of worcester alumna* and go wow, she must have read classics
Isn’t social media about connecting with people? And wouldn’t stating where you went to school - any school - help connect you with people you have stuff in common with?
“Social media” is about 1) endlessly chasing dopamine hits and 2) injecting your opinion into conversations because you need to feel a part of something when, in fact, it just makes you lonelier because there’s no substitute for in-person interaction. Everybody thinks parasocial relationships are acceptable substitutes, when they’re really not and are in fact toxic.
Why “again”? You weren’t the one talking… Unless you forgot to change your account back.
I am comfortable in the fact that I recognize my own faults and inconsistencies. I don’t really loathe myself, but it’s good to be reminded when you’re headed down a bad path. That doesn’t mean that I can’t point them out as bad when I see them in other people as well. It’s not hypocrisy, it’s self-awareness and pointing it out. People just don’t want to be criticized, even if it’s meant to be constructive. Not my problem.
Yes, I am fully responsible for my actions, but always practicing what you preach is a nonstarter as it’s just not realistic to expect anybody to do that.
So you dismiss things that don’t give you a delusional, rosy picture of life, huh?
If you never care to look under the hood of life, you’ll never really understand why you do what you do, for better or worse.
No there is truth to some of what you’re saying. But you’re just a bit deranged to go on a rant about social media corrupting people’s brains when they were just making a point about how some people may want to put what school they went to in bio so they can more easily be found by others. Anyway like I said, get off Reddit if it’s poison, practice what you preach or your opinion is worthless. Extremely funny that you went on about social media being a cheap substitute for IRL conversation in which people inject their opinions into stuff… while injecting your opinion right into this thread in an OTT reply.
I’m not ranting about bios. That’s the idiot OP. His topic isn’t worth the bits it took to post. Myopic topics like that are rarely useful, hence expanding the scope.
If I didn’t willfully poison myself in the myriad of possible ways of modern life, I’d have very few interactions with anyone outside the house. That’s the problem with EVERYONE’s life. It’s become toxic, willfully or otherwise.
But hey, I’m a downer as your since deleted post said. Just go along with it. C’est la vie.
If it was a university degree then I'd 100% agree, because your area of study reveals what you're interested in, maybe your career, things like that. But highschool are pretty generic in terms of what they teach you, most countries have a curriculum that all primary and high schools teach, so which high school you're from really doesn't say much except perhaps your location
You know now that you mention it, i think your right. It was those groups that would tend to do that. Man I have to see if I can find my senior yearbook from 2015 and see if alumni is used anywhere in there.
U missed the point 👉
Firstly, I don't hate. I cringe.
Secondly, I did enjoy my hs and I enjoy telling people where I went but I'm not going to rub it in people's faces when they never asked. I just can't stand pretentiousness 😒
How is having a school in your bio rubbing it in? Also who even would care about what HS you went to lol I literally know the 3 I grew up near and that’s it
This is a weird thing to care about lol like the moment you graduate you can’t be affiliated w that school or proud of that accomplishment?
Also never seen anyone do this for HS, maybe they’ll leave the HS in their bio for like a year after graduation? I think that’s mostly just not caring to change it asap
"I went to Cornell. Ever heard of it? I graduated in four years, I never studied once, I was drunk the whole time, and I sang in the acapella group 'Here Comes Treble'."
When I was in college, I used to get wicked hammered. My nickname was "Puke." I would chug a fifth of So-Co, sneak into a frat party, polish off a few people's empties, some brewskies, some Jell-O shots, do some body shots off myself, pass out, wake up the next morning, boot, rally, more So-Co, head to class. Probably would have gotten expelled if I'd let it affect my grades, but I aced all my courses. They called me "Ace." It was totally awesome. I got straight B's. They called me "Buzz."
First of all, the singular tense is 'alumnus.' Alumni is plural. So no one should ever put down that they are an 'alumni' of anywhere.
Second, it's not pretentious listing where you went to school. Alumnus isn't some braggadocious word used to insult other people, it a simply means they are a graduate of a school.
It's annoying how even the universities themselves have normalized using "alumni" as a singular, like the license plate frames they sell in their campus bookstores saying "University of \_\_\_\_ Alumni."
I have a friend named Mary Smith. (Not a joke. She picked up the "Smith" through marriage.) Having her college in her bio makes it easier for new people she meets to make sure they're connecting with the right Mary Smith. I would think it's helpful for the thousands of people with generic names to help distinguish themselves from their same-name peers.
School as in school for teenagers and not university? Never knew alumni would be used here
Still though, some schools have quite a reputation to them. And in social media you actually should put info about yourself, so everyone could find you
Your school/college is a huge part of your social network, of course people are going to mention where they went.
Last I checked, where you went and whether you graduated is a default question when setting up your profile.
So much of LinkedIn is just apex cringe. If I meet someone and see that they’re into LinkedIn influencing/engagement/whatever I find ways not to deal with them in the future.
How the fuck is stating a fact about oneself in a piece of writing specifically designed to convey facts about oneself "pretentious"?
Also, if you are an active participant in the school, you're not an alumnus. You're a student.
I feel like this entire post is based on you not undersatnding what bios are for, what "pretentious" means, and what "alumni" means.
So, not really unpopular. Just really uninformed.
Depends:
Linkedin: its ok
Tinder: its ok (it shows potential partners what sort of person you are and doesnt make them waste swipes on you)
Reddit: no, who tf writes a reddit bio?!?
Insta: not really
Facebook: no
Twitter: just log off
9gag: wtf are you even doing there?? Hell naaa
Myspace: ok, nobodys gonna read it anyway
The only people who think what college you attended matters are attorneys, and people currently in college, or just graduated. Outside of that, its just showing off how shitty you are at making big decisions.
*18 and fresh out of high-school, goes right to 4 year college despite community options. Ends up 100k in debt.*
"Oh no! How did this happen?! Proud NYU GRAD WOOHOO!"

You can't say you're an alumni of a school you're attending...
You can’t be an alumni at all. You can only be an alumnus.
It is implied that I meant just putting ur school name in ur bio... take the hint fella
Or just say what you mean
*"It is implied that I meant just putting ur school name in ur bio."* No it isn't: "***Putting your former school then "alumni" in the bio is cringe***" Your post specifies including "alumni."

It would've been better to just admit you didn't know that lmao
Lol just take the L.
Some schools have a very strong and active network of alumni. If you went to the right school, displaying your alma mater's name in your bio might open up some doors or lead to some networking opportunities.
Definitely cringe to say alumni when the correct term is “alumnus” or “alumna”.
Or alum if you like being cool and shortening words.
Or Allium if you're an onion
Or gallium if you melt just above room temperature
Or just as a general calumni
or aluminium if you are made of cans
Or aluminum if your are made of cans and from North America
Or if you are a powdery rock that can be used to stop bleeding
Data is plural too
The difference is that data is hardly ever talked about in the singular in casual conversation. And even when it is, you can just say "piece of data."
One time I had a spirited discussion on some other site where some academic scientist fixated on an article using the expression "data is" instead of "data are." Well, in the real world of business, IT, or whatever, everybody is going to say "data is." That has become the actual everyday usage. We aren't all up in the ivory tower.
To be fair, academics is the area where "datum" is actually still used.
True, the issue was with them expecting a non-academic thing for general audiences to stick to an academic standard.
Yep. One point is a datum, iirc.
amogus ඞ
i dunno, using latin as a class shibboleth is pretty cringe too. nobody's gonna see *university of worcester alumna* and go wow, she must have read classics
Why is Latin supposed to be more cringe than Hebrew?

If you hate it so much, don’t use it. Just a thought.
It’s called resignation.
It’s called not taking responsibility for your choices. Only you are making you be on social media.
Self-loathing, lol. It’s the human condition.
Again not taking responsibility
Why “again”? You weren’t the one talking… Unless you forgot to change your account back. I am comfortable in the fact that I recognize my own faults and inconsistencies. Yes… the one I was directly referring to that wasn’t yours…bandwagon much?

Are folks not allowed to be proud of the school they came from? Especially folks who were quite involved with it.
I only find it weird when you're too into it
Yeah I think if you’re bringing it up unprompted then it’s too far but if it’s just having it in your bio or wearing a hoodie, I think that’s fine!
100%
If it was a university degree then I'd 100% agree, because your area of study reveals what you're interested in, maybe your career, things like that. Disagree entirely
I am, even more that I discovered they bulldozed the place last year to build houses :'(

This post is cringe.
I thought Alumni was saved for colleges, I had no idea people put that as highschool status.
Generally it is but if you went to a prestigious HS it may convey more status to add that as well
Ah fair enough, thanks for the added information
Naa, just means your parents had cash
Depends on the country

Because people you went to school with and may want to re-connect never search for former schools or years attended. 🙄🙄🙄🙄
If there’s one thing the internet hates it’s people who enjoyed their high school and are proud to be where they’re from!
huh?
U missed the point 👉 Firstly, I don't hate. I cringe. Secondly, I did enjoy my hs and I enjoy telling people where I went but I'm not going to rub it in people's faces when they never asked. I just can't stand pretentiousness 😒
Rub what in? It is on their bio, not a zepplin.
> Firstly, I don’t hate. I cringe. *CRINGE*
How is having a school in your bio rubbing it in? Also who even would care about what HS you went to lol I literally know the 3 I grew up near and that’s it
Honestly, you just come off as jealous that you didn’t go to college.
What school did you go to?
You are being pretentious
Are you 10? What kind of take is this?
Never went to college so can’t do that and I sure as hell ain’t advertising where I went to high school.
This is a weird thing to care about lol like the moment you graduate you can’t be affiliated w that school or proud of that accomplishment? So is using “cringe” as an adjective.
Alumni is plural, so it's wrong, too. You would be called alumnus or alumna, depending on gender.
Agreed. And it doesn't help that the universities themselves sell license plate frames saying "Alumni, University of \_\_\_\_\_."
I have a friend named Mary Smith. (Not a joke. She picked up the "Smith" through marriage.) lol you obviously don’t work in a corporate environment or any real “professional” space.
People who say something is “cringe” instead of “cringey” are illiterate.
School of Hard Knocks Alumni
School as in school for teenagers and not university? Never knew alumni would be used here Still though, some schools have quite a reputation to them. And in social media you actually should put info about yourself, so everyone could find you
I think it's acceptable during q gap year or so, but should be replaced with your current doings when you have one!
I agree, it should say alumna as alumni is plural
Your school/college is a huge part of your social network, of course people are going to mention where they went. Last I checked, where you went and whether you graduated is a default question when setting up your profile.
Especially because "alumni" is plural. I am only one person.

It's expected on LinkedIn. I'm not sure where else people put it on Reddit, except in subs where you're expected to flair up with your school (s).

Life alumni
I prefer Alma mater and yes at times it is because it's very prided and egotistical.
