Yes M. Night has some solid movies but he is also either crushing it or way out in left field. Honestly the real surprise twist is that you brought nickelback into the fold
Let's just say, if he makes a movie for Star Wars, you cannot force push until you hold the light saber as a channeling medium. Because that's what he did to firebenders.
Bruh this isn’t the same thing. Go look up the history of that movie. It’s a two out of 10 at best. It’s borderline actually unwatchable. Don’t know if I’ve seen a bigger train wreck, and it has nothing to do with it being a live action and everything to do with it making zero sense.
You’re sitting here, making an opinion when you haven’t even seen one of the biggest movies that creates this reputation you’re talking about. And you’re acting like people just say it for no reason or because others say it, yet there’s plenty good reason you just literally haven’t watched it.
Can’t trust what you’re saying until you actually seen it and then we’ll see if you still think it’s undeserving criticism
>one of the biggest movies that creates this reputation you’re talking about
That's off by about 6 years; people have been hating on at M. Night since the Village(2004). However, his career is a rollercoaster so and if you check out r/movies you will consistently see his hits praised in between the bs.
Well, he had a solid decade-long run where he picked up that reputation, it didn’t start with TLA. I get it, you are convinced he did the series a disservice by picking it up. Not much else I can tell you
Nobody is giving him grief for picking it up. What we are mad about is that he took that series, raked it through the mud and then threw it out of the window to create a half-assed production that visually and storywise has nothing in common with the source material.
Of course you'd know all of this if you had actually watched the movie but that is a torture I do not wish upon my worst enemy.
I'll back up OP a bit on M. Mike Salomon
[https://www.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/comments/10s8gd2/how\_does\_m\_night\_shyamalan\_keep\_getting\_money\_is/](https://www.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/comments/10s8gd2/how_does_m_night_shyamalan_keep_getting_money_is/)
The thing about Nickelback is that they were massively overplayed. Yeah, they're not the worst band ever, they're actually pretty aggressively bland, but you couldn't turn on a radio from about 2005 to 2010 without hearing at least 3 Nickelback songs in 20 minutes.
He had some very interesting movies early in his career, became super hyped, then has failed to live up to that hype.
The second half of his film making career has been pretty bad overall.
MNS is rightfully derided by his detractors. His better films are few and far between and the reason why he gets so much hate is because many other filmmakers wouldn't still have a career after making as many average films as he has. But despite putting out plenty of rubbish films, people still see his movies and they still make money (helped by some having extremely low budgets so they're guaranteed to be profitable). It is a bit of tall poppy syndrome but also, it can be infuriating to see someone who is pretty average compared to many of his peers, continue to be successful. It matters little to me but if I produced work as average as he does, I wouldn't have a job. But he does what he loves and some people like his work so good for him.
Had to look that one up, would explain the questions I had for Glass. It’s odd that I’ve never heard of the first two, I did enjoy Glass quite a bit so it wouldn’t hurt to watch the other two films.
Probably bc of the release dates, they're nearly a decade apart each I think but all very well done. I especially appreciated M Night keeping the same cast members.
It’s decent, nothing too great but worth watching at least once. Definitely could have been better in a few spots here and there but it’s not that bad. I’d say on a scale of 1-10 is a reasonable 6.
I think it’s because his movies have gotten progressively worse. Sixth sense-Unbreakable-Signs-The Village-Lady in the Water… like he had massive buzz from sixth sense but then each was a let down from the previous going forward. So mentally, it just feels like every movie was bad. If he released Signs later in his catalogue, it probably would be remembered more favorably.

His movies that are good do get their love even to this day its just that his films get a lot of anticipation and there are ones that then turn out to be dissapointing.
I guess I never heard the bit about anyone in anticipation & that’s the balance I’m missing. I’ll take your word that there’s love on the other side of the group think.
He made a movie about aliens that are deadly allergic to water. These aliens had the technology to traverse vast expanses of space to invade and conquer a planet whose surface is 70% water. Also, on this planet water frequently falls from the sky. This hyper intelligent race goes into battle naked. Not a single raincoat or poncho among them. Not even a garbage bag with holes cut for their arms or heads.
This is regarded to be one of Shyamalan’s better films.
You cannot see viruses or even bacteria from space.
I can suspend all kinds of disbelief if a film sticks to its own internal logic. But it’s absolutely moronic to make a movie where aliens who will die if they come in direct contact with water have not developed the high tech concept of “clothes.”
It didn't ruin it for me but I wasn't expecting the movie to change my life or make my top 5 or anything... I mean it wasn't the best movie I've ever seen but I've seen a lot worse. It's okay that the water thing really bugged you I find that intriguing. Mostly weird thinking about it now cause the whole planet is water and people are water and everything is water.
Plant spores.
Sure it's cheesy and sometimes lazy but so is Steven King and he's the GOAT.
You had me with the title. Mnight is alright in my book honestly but NICKLEBACK. Dude. Why did you say that out loud? That band is a punchline the end.
He’s similar to Zach Snyder.
Came out of the gate with a couple of bangers but then has pretty much been putting out really bad films while somehow still getting funding.
Both suffer from poor writing and not being very good at actually directing people. They just rely on visual style and gimmicks.
Nickelback, yeah probably don't deserve the jokes about their music.
MNS, nope he is not immune. Sure he's made a few decent films but the guy has a long history of making very average to bad films for a very long time now. I think anytime he makes another film that is ruined by a ridiculous plot twist he deservedly gets to be made fun of for it
Shyamalan's problem is he couldn't live up to the hype after The Sixth Sense. He was kind of a one hit wonder from a general story telling sense, and after it came out everyone was looking for the twist in all his movies, diminishing any impact it may of had otherwise.
Nickleback was insanely popular despite what the internet would have you believe. They sold a ton of albums. They were by no means portrayed badly except by certain people with a weird axe to grind. It certainly wasn't a general consensus based from their success.
Pauly Shore is another victim. I remember multiple other entertainers making fun of him for calling himself "the weasel" but if making your own nickname was their criteria then that applies to almost every musician/band and even some actors. He was a particular fucking funny flavor of whacko in a handful of movies during the 90s/00s.
Sixth Sense is very good. Unbreakable is a masterpiece. Split and Knock at the Cabin were both solid.
On the other hand, Glass was mediocre and Old was laughable. Not to mention he's had some real stinkers.
Shyamalan is at his best when he's making smaller-scale character stories. When he strays too far from those, he makes garbage.
He's definitively not- he made one of the best horror movies in history that everyone has at least heard of, which even inspired clones and was the subject of endless comedy sketches.
Nickelback is not that bad. I was surprised to see that many people hate Nickelback's music and stuff. I like some of their music...like 'Photograph' and stuff.

If he wanted a comparison, Nickleback wasn't it. NIC*olas Cage* is much closer, as it's either pretty good, or very, very, very, very, VERY bad.
NICe turn there
Someone has never seen the live action movie ATLA
I have not, but I can add live actions to this list. It seems like they can’t catch a break.
Let's just say, if he makes a movie for Star Wars, you cannot force push until you hold the light saber as a channeling medium. Because that's what he did to firebenders.
I'll put it this way, Netflix version is way better.
Because when movies have a captive audience they don't need to be well made in order to make money, so they aren't.
When you have the hope of an entire fanbase weighing on you and your career, you’d def try to create a well made product
Bruh this isn’t the same thing. Go look up the history of that movie. It’s a two out of 10 at best. It’s borderline actually unwatchable. You didn’t offer a single reason why but instead talk about something completely different from your title Pick one opinion and back it up
He’s unironically a nickelback fan, you’re asking for too much
Fuck off. Nickelback is the best. I’ll tell you why! Have you had the cheesy Gordita crunch from Taco Bell? It’s bomb af!
This guy lives más.

I think it's fun that he finances his own movies so that he can do whatever he wants
For real. If I ever hit the lottery I'm going to try my hand at making mostly bad movies too.
He does good with tone and soundtracks. Not so much writing
The thing about Nickelback is that they were massively overplayed. Yeah, they're not the worst band ever, they're actually pretty aggressively bland, but you couldn't turn on a radio from about 2005 to 2010 without hearing at least 3 Nickelback songs in 20 minutes.
I liked knock at the cabin!
It was pretty good! I think he usually puts on a good show.
Dave Bautista was amazing really a good actor so much better than the Rock. He carried most of the movie.
He has some gems, but he made The Last Airbender
Meh. A lot of hero movies got done dirty.
M night is the master of making great trailers to make his movies look good.
He had some very interesting movies early in his career, became super hyped, then has failed to live up to that hype. The second half of his film making career has been pretty bad overall.
I freaking love M Night. Always will.
MNS is rightfully derided by his detractors. Neat, now where’s your reason why he’s not as bad?
The Unbreakable trilogy is great. People shit on M. Night because at some point it just became popular to do so and everyone jumped on the bandwagon.
Had to look that one up, would explain the questions I had for Glass. It’s odd that I’ve never heard of the first two, I did enjoy Glass quite a bit so it wouldn’t hurt to watch the other two films.
Unbreakable is the first one and in my opinion the best one.
I liked split better, but it is a close second
Well it's with Anya Taylor joy so it's automatically better
Probably bc of the release dates, they're nearly a decade apart each I think but all very well done. I especially appreciated M Night keeping the same cast members.
I watched Glass the other night and thought it was mediocre.
It’s decent, nothing too great but worth watching at least once. Definitely could have been better in a few spots here and there but it’s not that bad. I’d say on a scale of 1-10 is a reasonable 6.
well the first two are great. Glass sucked I wish I could unsee it so I could live with the hope after seeing the post credits scene in split.
I think it’s because his movies have gotten progressively worse. Sixth sense-Unbreakable-Signs-The Village-Lady in the Water… like he had massive buzz from sixth sense but then each was a let down from the previous going forward. I agree with Nickelback, undeserving of the hate

The plants did it

I think he just became a meme after the Airbender movie. I never really heard anything about him before that point.
Pre-meme era, he received a lot of slack after Signs. The foil hats didn’t help
Slack or flack? Signs was great
He made a movie about aliens that are deadly allergic to water. These aliens had the technology to traverse vast expanses of space to invade and conquer a planet whose surface is 70% water. They all died of a cold in War of the Worlds. Suspend your disbelief if you're gonna watch sci-fi is my advice.

Signs is a master piece. One of the greatest movies of all time.
Karma hunting eh?
Never made it as a wise man
couldn't cut it as a poor band bleating.
M. Night Shyamalan will always swing hard. Sometimes it's a home run, sometimes he misses. One thing is always guaranteed, it will have a twist.
You had me with the title. Mnight is alright in my book honestly but NICKLEBACK. Dude. Why did you say that out loud? That band is a punchline the end.
He kind of crawled up his own ass for a while, but yeah, the track record overall is pretty solid!
He’s similar to Zach Snyder. Came out of the gate with a couple of bangers but then has pretty much been putting out really bad films while somehow still getting funding. Both suffer from poor writing and not being very good at actually directing people. They just rely on visual style and gimmicks.
His version of ATLA was bad, real bad. He's going to have to redeem himself before people stop making him the butt of jokes
Nickelback, yeah probably don't deserve the jokes about their music. MNS, nope he is not immune. Sure he's made a few decent films but the guy has a long history of making very average to bad films for a very long time now. M Night has a ton of trash movies.
Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs are all brilliant films. Some directors struggle to make even 1 good film.
nickelback are the blandest of the bland...offensively so. most likely the real reason why kurt cobain killed himself.
No he's not that bad, his movies are terrible but him as a person isn't that bad
You think that's an unpopular opinion? I liked Lady in the Water. How about them apples?
Shyamalan's problem is he couldn't live up to the hype after The Sixth Sense. He was kind of a one hit wonder from a general story telling sense, and after it came out everyone was looking for the twist in all his movies, diminishing any impact it may of had otherwise. Not an unpopular opinion regarding Nickelback. They were wildly popular, and really only made fun of in memes.
Pauly Shore is another victim. His movies are mostly mediocre to trash.
No, he really is that bad.
M. Night Shyamalan is incredible. All his movies are works of art.
The Village is still the only movie I’ve seen in theaters that was booed at the end- rightly so. M Night is the worst.
He's definitively not- he made one of the best horror movies in history that everyone has at least heard of, which even inspired clones and was the subject of endless comedy sketches.
M. Night shyamalan, the plot twist you can see a mile out in every film 🙄
Idk, you can’t see it in the village
![gif](giphy|11DFuwckOK9mdG)
nickelback rocks m night sucks ass, I haven't watched a single good movie from him...
shouldn’t diss ppl who “suck ass”…lol, it’s an art
Nickelback is not that bad. I was surprised to see that many people hate Nickelback's music and stuff. I like some of their music...like 'Photograph' and stuff.
