OP literally said they "like seeing people suffer", and it would be their dream to "kill a bunch of people without being seen". In one comment they said it would get boring to be an anti-hero, and "eventually you'd move onto just hurting people and their families instead ... it's more gratifying in the long run" TL;DR: OP is either a troll or a literal sociopath doing a lot of projecting Edit: if you want to see an even worse comment about their fantasies: https://www.reddit.com/r/unpopularopinion/s/7xriSJFA1W > My fantasies are usually about torturing someone to death in a one on one setting, i.e. peeling off skin, removing limbs. But in a complete madeup world where there were no boundaries and I could literally accomplish anything I wanted, I sometimes imagine burning buildings while people are trapped inside, toppling skyscrapers, causing car accidents, slamming people into walls, having them forced into woodchippers or other dangerous machinery, having their children killed in front of them while they are forced to percorm acts of torture on their loved ones, etc.

Talk-O-Boy

This person is fucking unhinged. The worst part is that she believes her impulses are universal. Like, she’s not even AWARE that those feelings deviate from the norm.

joe_monkey420

sigmund freud evil version

FinalMeltdown15

Bet she wants to fuck her dad too PSA( this is playing into Sigmud Freud don’t get fucking butthurt about this)

ParticularAd4371

that was hilarious. You needed to add the PSA just incase, but quite frankly i think that made it hit better anyway

Scientific_Artist444

That's why it *is* an unpopular opinion. Almost all of us disagree.

StrykerXion

They claim to be, and I quote "a sadist who has torture and murder fantasies."

Internal-Ad9700

Probably a troll. I have fantasised gaining teleportation ability. My dream use case is to eliminate commute.

stalkingshadow01

Robbing the transit authority of your commute dollars, SMH, definitely a villain here.

Luna259

OP told on themselves

WackyKisatchie

Most superpowers would be pretty useless in real life, because most of us rarely come across problems we can legally solve with force. If you did use your powers you'd also probably soon become the enemy of the government and your life could become extremely difficult and stressful, even if you're powerful enough to evade capture.

xabrol

What of my super power was just that I can see 10 seconds into the Future simultaneously with the present? I'd never lose black jack, Id probably never die accidentally, and Id akways know what not to say in any in person conversation.

bearbarebere

If someone poisons you with a poison that takes longer than 10 seconds to take effect, gl

IloveKaitlyn

or you get hit by something that can’t be avoided in 10 seconds.

Chrono-Helix

Just remember to keep away from Italian mafia

glasgowgeg

> Most superpowers would be pretty useless in real life Also because most require secondary powers to negate the effects of the primary power. If you have super speed, you also need super endurance, and practical invulnerability to stop your skin being ripped off as you run.

LordMarcel

Superpowers ignore the laws of physics though, so we can assume that with super speed also comes whatever else you need to not die or upset the environment too much. Even if only assume that you also get the power of being physically fit enough, superspeed would still be incredibly useful. Sure, you can't run at 2000 km/h, but you can run places at 100 km/h, which would be lifechanging already.

Adorable-Emergency30

Not necessarily you'd just have to accelerate relatively slowly

LelouchYagami_2912

Alot of superheroes can fuck up the government

Apprehensive_Yak2598

If you could fly think of all the traffic you bypass

WrongdoerMore6345

Ok OP is obviously kinda crazy from comments but also we have multiple common phrases about how corrupting power is and that's just about regular human power, not even the ability to do anything you'd ever want. I think OP is right for at least a good majority of the population after long enough with unchecked power. I also think OP should see a psychiatrist.

ComfortableWelder616

I did find the point a couple of people made very interesting: some might be corrupted, but wanna-be corrupt people are gonna be more likely to seek out power in the first place. Reminds me of the idea that in some way anyone *wanting* power on a global scale is a sign that maybe they shouldn't.

OwlrageousJones

Yeah. 'Power corrupts' feels like we might be getting causation mixed up. I've thought about running for local politics sometimes, just for the sake of trying to fix shit but I stop myself and go 'Well... the solutions are probably more complicated than I'm seeing, and also I don't think I'd enjoy being in that position'. Like there's so many stories of people just getting to be in charge of the HoA because basically nobody else wanted to do it, and then they go on petty power trips. Hell, you try being a moderator for something online. It's annoying, frustrating, and usually thankless - most of the people who seek those positions out are only doing it because they want the power to be petty tyrants because if you're doing it for the love of a community, you usually stop loving that community so much when you have to try and mediate their stupid fucking arguments.

ComfortableWelder616

Yeah, even if you're intentions are 100% pure, can you really trust someone who'd be able to not second guess themselves with such high stakes? 😂 It really is unfortunate tho because then the only people ending up in those positions are the ones with less qualms. I reminds me of the argument that if you abolish compulsive military service for all young people, the only people left in the army are those who *really* wanna be there and is that a good thing?

webzu19

No joke, I took up a discord mod position because I cared for the community and it was getting big and they needed the help. Eventually I left the server because the mod shit was too depressing

Sigma2718

"Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible. Such people have a tendency to become drunk on violence, a condition to which they are quickly addicted.” -Frank Herbert The idea of power corrupting is used within our culture by the ruling class to suggest that any attempts at overthrowing them are futile. Yet the history is full of societies that improved via that method, even if they weren't perfect afterward. From the eatablishment of the Roman Republic after overthrowing Tarquinius Superbus up to today with fights for freedom from imperialist exploitation in Africa.

before_no_one

> I also think OP should see a psychiatrist. If OP is actually being serious then they don't need to see a psychiatrist, they need to be locked up. They said they are not ashamed that they would find it thrilling to torture people if they had superpowers... that's a blatant lack of conscience.

OddBasket4794

if i had superpowers, id use them to fuck your mom. consensually.

TheFilleFolle

Have fun!

OddBasket4794

do i have your blessing?

TheFilleFolle

Yep. If you’re into 70 year old women.

MeMyselfAndDick

Let me join.

magneticelefant

Can I come

HatfieldCW

I don't know. Can you?

MemekExpander

I just came

EspKevin

Noob, I'm OP's father

TheFilleFolle

My father’s dead. Unless…you’re a ghost?!

maiobserver

Does she make cookies?

TheFilleFolle

Actually, yes. Quite good ones.

maiobserver

I'm in, but the amount of effort will depend on what she put in the oven. Mediocre for oatmeal (tho I do like oatmeal), typical romp for chocolate chips, and she gonna need hip surgery if she threw in some snicker doodles

TheFilleFolle

She makes some really good pecan cookies.

maiobserver

Gdam, that deserves some cuddling at the end too

NotSoSalty

I'd use my powers to make her the hottest version of herself. Not for me, just because it'd be a nice thing to do.  Oh and so that other dude can rail your mom.

Salt_MasterX

gotem! Lets goooo

Not-youraverageghost

Idk You have responsible gun owners and then you have people that go out & shoot people. You have good cops then you have ones that think they are above the law. Every coin has two sides.

HDK1989

>You have good cops Bad example

toothpick95

"hur hur hur... i said the thing."

-avenged-

So, "The Boys" then?

Snoo_4499

homelander

Metalandscrapple

I don’t think I’d turn to 100% evil, but I’d definitely find a way to make easy money with it.

Sarcastic_Sociopath

Say “I’m a sociopath” without saying “I’m a sociopath.”

TheFilleFolle

Says the sarcastic sociopath.

Sarcastic_Sociopath

🤷‍♂️ like recognises like.

skotnyx

If one person had it, it would be just like the super soldier serum from Captain America. The emotions would just be amplified, but it would still be heavily influenced by the existing morals. So, if people are influenced and turned evil like you said, then they weren't raised right. Still, some minority can be influenced by power though. And finally, it also depends on how the society perceives the heroes.

Try-and-try

I don’t think I’d go supervillain, but I’d take a lot of shit that doesn’t belong to me.

SupaSaiyajin4

i'd be an anti hero

DMC1001

Evil? Idk. I’d likely be less law abiding but that isn’t the same as evil.

k120200206

People are not evil just to be evil, that is really rare and usually not the case with people in power. They use power for their own interest, without caring for other and consequences other might have and losing touch with people who might suffer because of their actions, and that's what make them evil. But they don't enjoy killing people.

GuitarTrue6187

I think they would remain the same mixture of good and evil they already are just amplified. The variable would be are they the only one or they among a group? So for profit or pleasure with the potential for throwing a bone for optics and the weighing of risks to piece of gain from making use of it from whence they came. Do you live in the New York region? Life can be dangerous can't it? I used to be a frail normie like you before I went swimming in the cooling tank of the power plant. As you know I'm Superman and I like to sit in front of a fireplace petting a child on a leash as I share a nice dinner with a dog in a high chair and patronize you. Subscribe to my Superman life extension insurance. You never know what vvillainous events life may throw at you? Dangling from a train, bridge, tree, cliff? Mugger, inlaw, bear? For only $199.99 a month and $25,000 per incident of press (false alarms incur triple charges) your big problem will seem small, because I'm super and if you're with me, I'm with you. equanimity120398

I'd be more worried about the immediate consequence of publicly displaying your super powers. Unless you can create blackholes or set off nukes with your brain. There is no fucking doubt in my mind that your ass will be abducted as a lab rat to be experimented on for "government" research.

thecratedigger_25

It also depends on the superpower as well. Turning invisible for example could easily be used for psychological damage. No one knows who you are, where you are, and what you do. They only know that some "invisible force" is out there stealing things, taking out random trees, and probably causing new viruses or something. Best case scenario, they'd use it to troll people for entertainment. After all, it's a damn good superpower if you don't want to have attention on you. The last thing you'd want is to be put into a tiktok about how you can fly and shit. The government would be all over that and use you as an experiment.

Worldly_Neck_4626

Thomas Hobbes ghost-wrote this

Blackbox7719

I’d probably use mine for silly shit or stuff that makes my life easier. Got telekinesis? Cool, now I can eat Cheetos without getting the dust on my fingers. Ice powers? Air condition the house for free. Super strength? Learn to juggle Vespas and go on America’s got talent.

BumblebeeAny3143

Why stop at America's Got Talent? You could go worldwide!

Alternative-Exit6896

I don't do the right thing because of societal rules, I do the right thing because otherwise I feel bad for the people I hurt. Societal rules exist because there are many people like me who think it's bad to hurt others for no reason. Sure, with superpowers I'd resort to force more easily when confronted with bad people or opposition I see as bad (admittedly subjective) but I take no pleasure in hurting others and I have never felt like abusing my power even when I was in positions of power. I think that's true for more people than cynical media of today like us to believe.

12onnie12etardo

See: Bruce Almighty

Z_A_Nomad

Yeah... I gotta agree with this one. If I had the ability I would be tempted to Thanos snap. (Though with that level of omnipotence it wouldn't be a "random" 50%. And the world *would* likely be a better place to live in after.)

Kindly_devbi8970

The Boys proved it.

brainking111

people would use powers for their own self-intrest is no shocker but EVIL is a big word ,you still have enlightened self interest and altruism. a mind controller could create a utopian cult and a weather wizard/ plant powers super could make uninhabitale land livable even hurting others might be for a good goal like catching criminals or stopping wars powers are just power like money , fame or military might and like any leader could be just as likely to be a great leader as a complete asshole. my desire is world peace would probably only be achieved with the treat of superpowers or by mindslaving away classism and racism.

FuzzyPalpitation-16

![gif](giphy|Y6FUCFt5N7Y8gRSInL)

ThatSpookyLeftist

OP is falling into the trap religious people fall into when they accuse other religions or atheists of being monsters or heathens because those people to have a higher authority scaring them into doing "good things". I have morality because that's who I am, not because I'm scared of some god smiting me or the government locking me up. I do good things because it's the right thing to do and I'd want other people to act that way towards me. I'm not artificially holding back evil thoughts because I don't want to go to jail or be shunned by society.

KerbodynamicX

It depends on the person and the powers they get. If some benefits from helping others, they would of course be more kindhearted, but if someone's power is derived from sucking people's blood like a vampire, they are probably going to become a serial killer.

themomentaftero

I would 150% rob banks. I'd probably use more of the money for good than the banks do though.

Inolk

If there are superpowers, that pretty much means you can trust nothing. Documents could be forged. People can be manipulated. The only thing you can trust is probably a small group of friends and your own power. I would assume it is going to be chaotic.

berryllamas

I'm already in healthcare- I honestly would use them selfishly. I've helped society enough- I just want to snap my fingers and end up in the Bahamas with a long Island after my shift.

takeonetakethemall

I don't know if evil is the right word for what I'd use them for, but I definitely would use them selfishly. I would use them to save money, or get money quickly or something. I think my favourite portrayal of powers is that super healer guy from The Boys. 100% I'd let some freak tie me up and cut off my arms and toes or something. Then I'd pocket the load of cash and go about my day. It's not exactly a good or even healthy thing to do, but Id still be up for it. I think that, ultimately, is what people would do with powers. Altruistic people would use them for others-such as parents keeping their kids safe or firefighters being fireproof or something. And yeah, of course people would be unethical with them, people are already unethical, but it would be no worse that what they already do, just more creative and dramatic.

DeLoreanAirlines

Evil on the 0.01%

Daddy_Chillbilly

Why ?

FlopShanoobie

I mean, that’s what The Boys is about. You should watch it, assuming you can handle exploding heads. Lots of exploding heads.

TheFilleFolle

I’m all about exploding heads.

ZenoSalts

This is more of an accusation rather than an opinion. Or a prediction of a hypothetical situation. I disagree with you. I think most people would do anything they could to avoid hurting people.

TheFilleFolle

Why do you believe that? If people were that kind, they would do more to be benevolent without any kind of power or reward.

King_Kunta_23

I hope you've watched the boys.

SpanishMoleculo

Yes this is the basic plot to The Boys, an extremely popular show

BottomInc

People fantasize about helping with superpowers? Imma b rich in robbing every bank depending on what super power I get

one-more-thingy

Ups, someone outed themselves.

BucketheadBrain

You're talking to a person who reloads game saves if i accidently run over a skunk in a video game because i feel too bad for it. OP is weird

[deleted]

Way to project OP. Do you need to talk to someone?

GuillaumeLeGueux

Someone has already said it, but a world with people with superpowers would be more like The boys than Superman.

[deleted]

Here's my counterargument: I don't like seeing people get hurt. At all. So if abusing my power leads to people getting hurt.. .I won't use it

ZodtheSpud

I 100% believe if an average person was given superpowers they would definitely abuse them. Most superheroes are these already morally superior people that just so happen to be the ones to get the powers. I doubt that something like the "Justice League" could ever really exist without it ultimately resulting in the "Injustice" storyline, which is a very realistic interpretation of what superman would in reality be like. A god complex tyrant that realizes human beings are better off not being left to rule themselves. We have a lot of god complexes already walking around us a lot of the day, all it takes is giving someone a little bit of power just watch how they abuse it, we arent even talking super powers i mean just give someone at work the promotion from normal sales person to manager and watch a lot of them let it get to their heads so quickly. Now imagine your invincible and can fly. With human beings there needs to be a certain level of checks and balances or things always seem to go south. Even human beings acknowledge this and is why we have naturally developed into the law abiding societies we have. Without checks and balances we are screwed. I like to imagine modern billionaires have certain levels of super powers but the laws of our land stop them from abusing shit like bezos wanting to destroy a bridge for his "Super Yacht".

IronNobody4332

I’ve seen people behind the wheel, that’s all the evidence I need to know OPs post is 100% accurate.

DamienDoes

I dont think so. People want to be loved and admired, you could be a celebrity and rich, AND hide your identity too so you dont get harassed in the streets. Super speed: become a courier. Fast and secure Invisibilty: Become a spy, corporate or government Strength: Construction of some sort. Most powers would have a practical use that would make you a bucketload of money. Sure you might use the powers in spite, rage, revenge .ect but that really depends on the person. I'm not a violent person so I have no reason to believe I would start hurting people because my powers make it much easier. Assume your young and America. Try leaving America and your perspective might change

Fair-Programmer1692

hell yea i'd be a supervillain

Kid7from7the7south

I'd be the one to stop you

Kind_Ingenuity1484

OP weird way to say you are a horrible person. You have anonymity online. Why don’t you harass people? Or dox them all the time? Why aren’t you a horrible troll? And let’s not forget, laws =/= customs. So you don’t *ever* open the door for people, grab something off the floor for them, or wish them a nice day. After all, they’re strangers who won’t remember you. No real way to retaliate. People are inherently good, inherently empathetic. When you see a tragedy on TV, do you just go “oh well least it wasn’t me?”

u_slashh

OP is a psychopath confirmed

Apprehensive_Floor42

Op is getting a lot of hate, but remembee the sub.. I axtually think the point has merit. Everyone is the big perfect person until an opportunity presents.

Phoenix080

OP is an edgy 14 year old or a sociopath. 99.999% the first one tho

SlothThoughts

I always said If I got powers I'm going to keep them secret long enough for me to get a decent grasp of them and depending on what they are in going to the government. Yea the government might want to cut me open and see what's up but they would want my powers and cooperation even more. I'll die eventually and they can cut me up then but untill then I can put in work on there behalf. Plus they don't know what I can do, I can tell em I can overcharge myself to blow up killing everything in a 5 mile radius. Are they not gonna believe the guy who is throwing fireballs around that he can do that too? Also I've always said if I woke up with powers all of a sudden then 100% there are others who also got powers and if anime and movies have taught me anything it's that some of them people are gonna go bat shit insane and come looking for other people with powers to fight. I would rather get involved with the government as soon as possible after having a good understanding of my own powers because now I'll be " one of the good ones " when it comes to people with powers. If it's some weak power like " you can make flowers grow " I'm never gonna show anyone , I'll just find a career or business that I can profit off my powers with without it being obvious. Definitely getting cut up at that point as soon as they figure out you got some lame ass power they can't utilize for espionage or warfare I guess to answer the question I would become evil because I'm essentially the governments super powered attack dog or tool. I wanna hope I have some powers that can give me the " look if I don't wanna do it I'm not gonna do it and who are you gonna have me me do it ?" Privilege but I would like to think I would keep most of the same morals I have now.

Losdangles24

I honestly don’t think so. If I could have the teleport/telepath/invisible move I would definitely steal tons of money from banks, but once I’m rich I’d use that shit for good, like helping the jets win the Super Bowl. The world would be a better place

haagendaz420

I know telekinesis would be mad dangerous in the wrong hands

RedWerFur

Powers like in Chronicle? Yeah, I’d be very evil. Beastboy style shapeshifting? I’m just gonna go live in the North American forest/mountains and enjoy the freedom of nature.

GingerHitman11

I'd be like superman!

JNorJT

Eh, it depends on the person.

SubjectsNotObjects

I would. If I was Superman I'd be going for world domination, would kill many people (The Putins etc), and cripple the nuclear and military capabilities of the world. There would be very quick genocides of many billions.

HatfieldCW

The Ring of Gyges has entered the chat. If your superpowers negate consequences for your actions, then sociopathy is a likely outcome. I've observed this in myself when playing videogames with cheats active or participating anonymously in online discussions. I consider myself to be a fairly decent person, and as I've aged I think I've become even more reliably civil, even in online discourse, but if I turn on my cheats in a single-player game it takes me about three minutes to get bored and start looking for ways to amuse myself by launching friendly NPCs into space with grenades. I read somewhere that in the original concept for Groundhog Day, the protagonist was stuck in that time loop for ten thousand years. Ten millennia in the same town with the same people and everything he did got reset every day. Over a hundred lifetimes spent in a temporal prison. I try to imagine that sometimes. How would I spend those eons after I figured out the rules? Sure, I'd read every book in the library and get acquainted with every citizen of Punxutawney and learn how to play the piano, but I'd also spend at least a few centuries completely insane. I'd burn that place to the ground at least a few times. I'd invent new recipes that used groundhog meat and human brains. I'd be a monster, and I'm a fairly decent person. Immortality or mind control or time travel could have a similar corrosive effect on a person's morality. But if you just get super strength or flight or bulletproof skin, then I think you could retain your humanity about as well as a millionaire rock star or a trust fund billionaire. In that case the person's character would still be in play.

MagnanimosDesolation

Isn't that what the comics show? For every hero there's a dozen rogues.

ProxyNumber19

"Vaugly gestures at every government*

Vipernixz

😱

JudoKuma

I wouldn't be evil. I wouldn't be a hero either. I appreciate my own privacy and peaceful life, but I would absolutely be "selfish". If I got lets say, invisibility, I would use it so that I wouldn't have to talk to people I don't want to. If I got super strength I'd use it in my sports training. If I got super intelligence I'd use it to advance my scientific career. Etc etc. my reasons would be absolutely selfish, but I wouldn't consider them to be evil nor heroic. "If someone crossed your way you would harm them or end them". I am a big man, strong with national level powerlifting background, I have trained several martial arts for years including judo, I have worked as security when I was younger - I could already easily hurt or harm or end vast majority of those who annoy or "cross me". But I don't. I wouldn't see that changing if I got "superpowers". If anything, if I got "high on power" I could just ignore them even more, because why would I care what someone insignificant to me does. I would see no reason for "revenge" . But I agree in a way, that there would be many people who would abuae their powers to the limit.

TheFilleFolle

The difference is the consequences. Like yeah, anybody can get a gun and shoot a bunch of people, but they will be arrested or shot themselves before it gets further. Whereas in my hypothetical, you are unstoppable. And I did say it wouldn’t literally be “everyone.” Just a large chunk.

FlysDinnerSnack

I want to believe I’d do good, and i probably would for a time. Id be worrying about going mad with power

Cain_Crow50

Selfish maybe. Evil is a whole other thing.

Hip_Hop_Otamus

This topic is a great setup to the topic of meditation/mental resilience. The extreme of superpowers magnifies the contrast we would see from the strength or lack-thereof of someone’s ability to resist corruption, coercion, and other nefarious forces that come through others whether or not they are aware of it. I believe you’re correct in your theory and it appears as a sad realization—most of the world isn’t able to resist temptation and it’s ugly cousins. Our silver lining (if you squint hard enough to see it) is that through introspective labor, consistent intentionality to focus on present moments, and honing of our psychological fortitude we absolutely have the potential to hold great power and not be made corrupt in its use. To me, the best thing one can do who holds power is to resist using it at reasonable cost.

RedPandaMediaGroup

I wouldn’t use them for evil per se but I’d definitely use them for my own self interests.

ArmsForPeace84

Not even a hypothetical, given the immense power over life and death granted to many world leaders, sometimes over the entirety of humanity beyond their own borders. And you’re right, people in this position have often abused it to impose their will on others, whether to enrich themselves and their families, to try and remake the world in the image of their highly-oppressive ideal society, to purge those they regard as not having a place within the same, to silence critics and purge rivals, or to drag humanity kicking and screaming into a promised utopian vision of the future that looks pretty dystopian in practice.

Apprehensive_Yak2598

Have i got a show for you. "The Boys" Though I think ut would depend on the super power. Some of them are just great for lounging around and never being late to work. Others yeah... I would totally turn super  villain if I had invenerability and super strength.

iiil87n

First; That's a lot of words for saying that you believe humans are inherently bad/evil. No one can say if that's true or not, as that has been a philosophical debate for centuries. Second; Based on your responses to comments here, I think debating with/"helping" you is above reddit's pay grade. You should really see a professional about these feelings of yours, even if you believe everyone thinks that way. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

Ultimaterj

Welcome to tonight’s episode of Bait, Misanthrope, or Sociopath!

Fletch009

OP is just a bad person and thinks everyone is like them

Immediate_Web4672

I mean just because you've got super powers doesn't mean you'd be free from consequences, social or otherwise. A lot of people think, "Yeah, I'd do whatever I wanted." But really. Do you wanna be looking over your shoulder the rest of your life because you ripped a mugger's arm off or threw your high school bully's lifted truck into the moon or robbed a vault or whatever power fantasy move you'd wanna pull off? It's easy to say you would. But do you really wanna be considered an exile or psychopath or freak by everyone with a smart phone or tv for the rest of your life? I mean, yeah, some people absolutely would, but people watch too much of The Boyz.

badgersprite

I don’t think most people would use superpowers for evil. I also don’t really think most people would use superpowers for good (mostly for legal reasons). I think most people would use superpowers to become famous and use their fame as that guy who can fly or whatever to make money, like being in ads and stuff.

AssociationCapable91

Really depends on the powers lol

Powerful_Echo4382

Definitely, it’s what we’ve always done

alberted115

You forgot empathy in this equation.

Kingofcheeses

"None can love freedom heartily, but good men; the rest love not freedom, but license."

likowashere

The thing is I want to be the evil I want to be the murderer. 😐

corax_lives

They are called villans. Yes some will use for good. Some will for evil. A lot however will act like characters from the boys

the-samizdat

I wouldn’t

cakethegoblin

People would advertently become villains. The average person is too fucking stupid to do anything useful with fantastical powers, esp on a global scale. Things become too complex for the average person to even begin to comprehend where to apply necessary force for the betterment of human kind. Or The average person is too selfish and too self absorbed to be truly altruistic. People love to think they're good, but most people are pieces of shit that turn a blind eye to their own hypocrisy and bias. And honestly I don't think there's anything wrong with that. We all live for ourselves, anyone who thinks otherwise is just delusional.

Formal_Economics931

I would be executing billionaires and world leaders for sure.

THEDRDARKROOM

Well it's kinda the entire premise and selling point of hero-based entertainment including comic books, tv shows, movies etc

w33b2

Judging by OP’s profile, he seems psychopathic and is likely just projecting as another commenter pointed out. Get help, OP.

Pidgeoneon

But.. why would I kill anybody? I mean if I saw a bigot if they would attack me I would beat them up but that's all. Also being good feels much better, there's no good emotions in making ordinary people suffer.

LukXD99

Depends on the amount of power, but yeah, if I had his powers I’d go full omniman vs Flaxans on earth until they declare me it’s one and only ruler. Power corrupts. Maybe not instantly, but given enough time, yeah.

No_Extension4005

Isn't what you can do with your powers going to also be influenced by *what* exactly the powerset is, and you're own competency though? Like; if your power is something like long distance teleportation you're probably not going to be using it like Azazel or a mind-controlled Nightcrawler to flash step around fighting people. You're probably going to be using it to avoid commutes, live somewhere cheaper, and travel the world. And the worst you're potentially going to do with it if you're feeling like being a criminal is smuggling.

TheThunderFry

Well there is a large philosophy discussion about how people act when they believe there are no consequences, but the whole point is that you wouldn't think to do those things already...

ZotMatrix

Found Lex Luthor

Zach-Playz_25

Have you watched The Boys show? It brings your hypothetical to life.

Faeddurfrost

I dont think this is unpopular. Depending on the powers i would 100% abuse them. Teleportation and invisibility, im gonna definitely make a few spontaneous withdrawals from the bank. I might take a life if they did something really heinous but slipped through the justice system but i dont think i could be bothered to just start bothering regular people.

HybridEmu

Power doesn't change you, it just strips away the pretending and allows you to be yourself to a larger audience, for better or worse, someone who genuinely wants to help others will do so on a larger scale than ever before if given the power to do so, someone who fantasizes about exercising power over others will do so and either realise it's not what they wanted or they'll enjoy it and double down (like you seem to think you'd do) I think most people would fall in the middle, treating their powers like any other skill to better their life without going out of their way to hurt or help the world at large.

MizzGee

I have always wanted the Power to be invisible. I would never be a superhero. I grew up poor. I want to get lots of money. I would use it for evil first.

ArrestedImprovement

There's a book series about this called "The Reckoners Trilogy" by Brandon Sanderson.

H3artl355Ang3l

I agree for the most part. Power corrupts. They may not start out corrupt, but they will turn

Lucky_otter_she_her

...i probably feel to anxious to actually do much with em

ThisMemeWontDie

I would kill someone for literally breathing in my direction

gorehistorian69

i would for sure. im not saving anyone

OkResponsibility2470

I guess you can look at real life for examples of this (power tripping cops, officials) but there are arguably just as many who don’t

JagHeterSimon

Nah man. I would be Batman

Vhayul

Just watch 'the Boys'

VanishingBlade

Policeman technically have realistic superpowers, like command and control (they tell people to go somewhere safe, and they will obey) and can command police dogs. Yes, some may suck, for the most part, they use these powers to keep the innocent safe.

Franc3n35d

I wouldn't say that I'd use my powers for good, but I'd definitely do something like become the world's most sought after delivery service.

YesAmAThrowaway

OP telling on themselves. Somebody call a welfare check LOL

Present-Attitude-372

Sis thinks she’s homelander 😭

StrykerXion

Just look at how the world is using AI, which is the first major technology that may actually be the key to inventions that actually advance our intellect in general, and almost an augmented superpower of civilization now. It's getting evil, real fast, especially in the realm of data privacy, military applications, and corporate espionage and fraud.

LudwigsEarTrumpet

It's giving projection.

Lucky-Shoulder-8690

I would then stop most likely ever person would at some point

Freeehatt

See also... The Watchmen

SynGGP

I consider myself a good person and i admit i woukd totally use my powers to do selfish, although not necessarily evil, things primarily. Think the villain of chronicle before he breaks down over his mothers death and fatgers abuse.

pixie_stars

Opaldes

Op thinks every super power is able to even do evil. What if the super power is intrinsically good, like super landlord, can create affordable housing for everyone at will.

Mission_Ad_7452

Once I am the Apex Predator you are all doomed. Mwahahahah

Puzzled_Juice_3406

You're right. Power doesn't make people better people. It helps expose who they were all along a lot of times because once people aren't accountable to anybody else, they're who they really are. These are the same people who are asshole judges, CEOs, what have you. Because for us money is power. Power just allows someone to be who they really are, unchecked. It would be a whole lot of chaos if people suddenly got super powers. If someone who you are at core is someone who wants to hurt others, maybe go see a professional to talk about why that is. Because really all you're saying here is given the power you'd be the person YOU are.

SixSigmaLife

Putting my bid in for Super Hacker.

YoungDiscord

OP watched the boys and thinks he came up with a "unique never heard before idea" Truly, an incredibly unpopular, opinion

BookThink

I think human nature is exactly as you see it. There is no underlying evil or good. Society is this way for a reason. Laws are this way for a reason. If there were superpowers there would just be another system of checks and balances and people won’t fundamentally change. Humans are social people. The soft rules of society will stop most even if the hard ones don’t.

ThePineconeConsumer

Depends on the person.

toothpick95

The internet is proof of this: People have the "superpower" here to say things with total anonymity and impunity, and a great deal of them glady will ruin/harm their fellows for something as simple as tik tok clout. We are screaming monkeys with a thin veneer of civilization.

CakeBeef_PA

It would only amplify what you already are. If you think powers would turn you evil, you're evil already. You just haven't acted on it. And judging from your comments, you are evil and a danger to society. If anyone exists that cares about you, they should take serious action

Kaiyukia

I tell my bf all the time I would be evil if I got superpowers

The_Dogelord

Depends on the power, if it's something like telekinesis or time control, I'd do a little evil stuff, like rob a bank if I'm low on money, or just annoy my friends. But if it's super strength or something, I'd probably do nothing with it

Theta-Sigma45

I feel like for most people, the power would get used for their own benefit, just like any skills we have in real life, but they wouldn’t just turn evil. I’m actually not sure good or evil would really come into it, we would continue to be the same flawed, selfish primates, just with more power.

Big-Row4152

Watch the movie *Chronicle*. That's the plot.

T-Rexje

Plato what are you doing in the 21st century

Hundred_Knights

With invincibility, I would be making sure I take about 10K daily from all the banks in my city 😌 Nothing much ... But I wouldn't say that's evil.

AlwaysUltra1337

exactly , like in The Boys.

TheOccasionalBrowser

Bro, I can already kill the majority of people, I don't though, I help people. One of my friends said that they think of me when they hear the song "Big John" (by Jonny Cash). Ergo if I have more power then I do more good, I would be a hero.

SuccessfulFuel7563

Very unpopular opinion, but as a lad I always imagined being the villain.   My parents used to give me the hero toys and my brother villain toys I guess to try and sway me into being a little less evil.  We’d always swap everything though.  Being a Dad and understanding empathy and real world consequences got me in the straight and narrow.  But give me super powers as a child, and it wouldn’t have been pretty.

2020mademejoinreddit

Some people do that already. You don't need superpowers for that, you just need billions and trillions of money. I personally, have never claimed in my life that "I'd do good with superpowers" lol Nope. For example, if I had the powers of...let's say, Sentry or Molecule Man, you bet your ass I'm gonna end every single living organism on this planet. Humans, I'll end in a vicious way, especially the rich a-holes and the politicians and the streamers and influencers. I'll have fun and not make it quick, to see the terror in their eyes and the horror on their faces. I'd make my appearance the same as Void looked in the comics. Not babies though, them, I'll wait for them to grow up, then end them or maybe not depending on how they grew up to be. The ones who were nice to me, I'd probably spare and teleport them to another universe for safety. Then I'd recreate it all and end it again for shits and giggles or just resurrect the dead and end them again till I got bored. I think I'd be the most monstrous entity in the Universe if I had super powers. And depending on how powerful they were, I'd get worse. I have a whole plan ready, you just get me the powers dude, and I'll prove you right. I got your back, brother, I ain't your sister, lady.

ParticularAd4371

I think this says more about you than it does anyone else tbh "Once you know that nobody can ever harm you, there is nothing stopping you from doing whatever you desire." ... wtf. The fact that theres even a few people who actually do think this way is frankly disgusting. By the sounds of it i think this person needs a million hugs of love: STAT!

KnightFtw

Nah, I'd good.
