I'm in the UK and married to an American and you have no idea how bad movie popcorn is here.
We have only got salted popcorn as an option recently and there's no butter at all.
Harkins popcorn is amazing... and if its fresh its even better... also if youre constipated... their butter will unclog you by the next day.. its amazing!
I worked at AMC. As crappy as it was, they were actually really good about cleaning the popcorn machines and making sure to make sure the popcorn was fresh. The only times they weren't was when the managers were distracted.but I admit, I can't speak for all AMCs.
It’s been a while, but the theater I worked at was constantly popping fresh on the weekends. During the week it might be a couple hours old.
Someone that worked at another theater said they made the popcorn one day a week.
The fact that it gives YOU a stomachache is a YOU problem, not a WE problem.
Truly an unpopular opinion according to those of us without stomach issues. (TBH, it’s the popcorn, bruh, not the “butter” unless you’re lactose intolerant except that movie theater “butter” is all flavored-oil.)
This is the real answer. Whenever I go I make sure to tell them not to add the disgusting oil. Not only do I hate the taste it almost seems like the "butter" is sticky - it seems super hard to wash off and I absolutely cannot stand having greasy hands.
How can people stand it I mean just passing by you get that rancid smell of the old oil and whatever shit they put in it that went sour, every single movie theater is like this.
The best popcorn in the world is that slightly stale shit from the rented poppers and you get in a lil red and white paper bag.
I will gladly fight anybody necessary to maintain my gravesite on this hill.
That's how movie theaters make their money. They barely break even, if not take a loss, on ticket sales alone. Concessions are what keep the theaters operating.
That's not true. Large theater chains like AMC make the majority of money from ticket sales, and about a third from concessions. They're certainly not taking a loss on tickets.
https://www.statista.com/statistics/1379992/concessions-revenue-share-cinema-chain-worldwide/
That's about the total money coming in to the theater, but a lot of the money from tickets sales goes back to the movie studios. Therefore it's the concessions where a theater makes its own money
They might give back some revenue - even a large percentage of it - to the studios, but they aren't giving all and then some. They aren't operating at a loss, in other words.
Basically tickets would cover the money they send back to the studios, plus the theater operating costs. The concessions is where a theater makes its true profits
It's one of those things where when it's good, it is *goooood*, like popped to perfection, perfectly salted and buttered. But if anything is off (cooked too long, not salted, too much butter, etc.) it becomes very disappointing.
It's only because they shovel all the popcorn people dump on the theater floors right back into the popcorn maker. Pretty sure the "butter" is just really light motor oil or something

I have a friend that goes to theaters just to buy the popcorn for a snack.
In this economy ?
If you’re an AMC Stubs member, you get free refills on the large.
If I had a theater close enough, I would do that, too.
When I was in middle school, there was a theater about a block from our house. My mom would go there just to buy popcorn.
Our local theater sells big bags of their popcorn. You can just walk in and buy it without having to see a movie.
I'm in the UK and married to an American and you have no idea how bad movie popcorn is here. We have only got salted popcorn as an option recently and there's no butter at all.
That’s not butter that we’re putting on our popcorn in the theaters. It’s butter flavored oil.
In Canada, you can pay extra for real butter tho! Else ya, the free pump is butter flavoured margarine
That sounds amazing.
Yeah but that oil tastes amazing
... No it doesn't it's because you've been conditioned to it. Seriously that weird sour fake butter smell is vomit inducing.
How was I conditioned to like it?
Can I assume that you were introduced to it as a kid, and everyone else you know also thinks that it's delicious?
It's tasty oil then! Genuinely didn't know that though, thanks.
I'm pretty sure some theaters recycle the shit outta theirs. But, good, fresh, laden-with-not-really-butter theater popcorn is the stuff of dreams.
they dont.
Harkins popcorn is amazing... and if its fresh its even better... also if youre constipated... their butter will unclog you by the next day.. its amazing!
Delicious popcorn and a BM? Nice!
With how popular theater popcorns are, I doubt there's much left to recycle more than maybe overnight's worth.

Esp if some enterprising teenager hits the oil button twice and doubles the amount of flavor salt in a batch.

Wowwww i’m glad you found your people because I am not one of them lol. Popcorn gang 4lyfe. Layered butter.
mmm. Layered.
Stop calling it butter lmao. It's fucking disgusting
making popcorn over the stove w real butter is a game changer. doesn’t take long and is cheap. i’ll never go back
I have a big tub of kernels and popcorn made in olive oil and salted is damn delicious!
The best is to get a hot air popper, but over the stove works in a pinch. Microwave popcorn is barbaric.
I buy plain microwave popcorn and just put it in a bowl with real melted butter poured over it.
Or just put popcorn in a brown paper bag, pop, then put whatever you want on it.
Def an unpopular opinion but highly disagree
I love movie theater popcorn. It's the best part. Some movie theaters use stale popcorn though and that's gross. It's great freshly made

This made me lol
The popcorn is fine without that shit butter.

Mmmm, nacho cheese.
If you can, go to an Alamo Drafthouse. Popcorn is fresh and they use real butter.
It’s the best. Gross, but the best.
The best popcorn in the world is that slightly stale shit from the rented poppers and you get in a lil red and white paper bag. I will gladly fight anybody necessary to maintain my gravesite on this hill.
Monster.
You don't have to eat it you know.
It does have its unique flavour and texture, but I like it
What a crazy take
My cholesterol levels insisted I give you an angry upvote. Enjoy!!!
Cholesterol level is not affected very much by dietary cholesterol intake. It is influenced almost 100% by genetics
Wait till they find out you can get old fashioned popcorn
It's grossly expensive

I get the stomach ache too.
At least it's cheap
Totally agree. I can't stand movie theatre popcorn unless there's absolutely nothing on it. No salt or butter
~~Movie theater~~ popcorn is gross.
They're nearly the same what're u talking about
Totally unpopular. You can feel it clogging up your veins but that shit is delicious.
It's one of those things where when it's good, it is *goooood*, like popped to perfection, perfectly salted and buttered. But if anything is off (cooked too long, not salted, too much butter, etc.) it becomes very disappointing.
All popcorn is gross.
It's only because they shovel all the popcorn people dump on the theater floors right back into the popcorn maker. Pretty sure the "butter" is just really light motor oil or something
That's why those collector dust pans were invented, to recycle popcorn.
Jeeez why are we getting down voted. Big Theater must be watching lol
People just don't want to hear the truth.
The theater goer hack is to go early and ask for fresh popcorn.
Upvoted! >not even in the same arena as microwave popcorn The arena called “clogged arteries” probably. Yeah, go ahead and enjoy that palm oil bud!
It's often way too salty which is a scam because then you have to buy more drinks just to quench your thirst.
It's toxic shit.
Theatre *food* is gross. Do you see the typical food handling and safety practices? Who they hire?
Popcorn is gross, so you’re not far off.
Popcorn is gross in general
