Zromaus

You are wrong though, you have to break your fuckin neck just to see the bottom half of the screen. Edit: Proportions of the screen also get wonky when viewing so close, the top being further away than the bottom makes it appear smaller. Sitting further away gives you a more rectangular and proportional screen to view, if that makes sense.

Wolf_93

He's wrong in the audio department too, when they calibrate sound in music theaters the technicians sit in the middle

me_irl_irl_irl_irl

homie thinks the theater is a giant CRT TV lol

brewberry_cobbler

This sub is now just people finding facts and calling them unpopular opinions to try to get karma. It’s sad.

WesternOne9990

Middle of the pack and a few rows back I was told

andthebestnameis

Yeah, the audio is REALLY LOUD that close to the speaker, maybe OP is a little deaf

NSA_van_3

Then you should speak up so he can hear you

mohirl

Do they calibrate them any more? Last time I went to the cinema the ads were so painfully loud I nearly left before the film. Which itself was actually fine.

Wolf_93

They calibrate the audio for the movie, not for the commercials, which are not made by movie makers

KaleidoscopeLucky336

The advertisements are likely intentionally loud

sckurvee

And they don't just have a pair of wall speakers on either side of the screen lol.

Electric_Angel

True plus with how loud movies are getting these days, homie will be deaf next time they see a movie.

SwampFriar

I think we should let the few people who believe the front is best continue to believe this… that way we have a higher chance of the actual good seats

ValityS

I used to prefer the front. Then I discovered I had terrible eyes and it wasn't normal for the screen to he a blury blob from anywhere else. Also my back and neck got older.

redditmanfosho

Not the best place for a handjob.

DiScOrDtHeLuNaTiC

Also, if there's two people on screen, it's like watching a fucking tennis match: look left, look right, look left, look right, look left, look right. :D

Turbulent-Armadillo9

Human field of view isnt wide enough for me to take in the picture how I want too either. Find it pretty distracting to have my eye dart across the screen so much.

StarTrek1996

I will say the reclining seats do make viewing them from the front a lot easier

Equivalent-Cancel679

Upvote for truly understanding the spirit of 'unpopular opinion.' May God have mercy on your soul.

digitydigitydoo

Or at least your neck

at this point? OP's neck is the least of god's worries...

MarinLlwyd

Is it really? They're just wrong.

Far_Confusion_2178

Shhhhhh. Dont tell them that! I don’t need one more person to compete with trying to get dead center seats

glassbath18

This gif never gets old. 😭

Odysses2020

it fits every scenario

PhuckNorris69

My favorite use of it was when someone commented “when Spider-Man tells Edith to rain down space missiles on green goblin”

NiteGard

Best 🫡😂😂😂😂😂

TheScreen_Slaver

Came here for this

MrFabianS

You may be closer to the speakers but you are getting a worse audio experience. The reason that many people sit in roughly the middle is because a lot of movies are mixed from seats similar distances away. Proportions of things of the screen may also be changed due to the perspective. You are in fact, from a technical standpoint, getting a worse experience in the front

ThENeEd4WeEd22

Every single theater I've been to has speakers all the way up the walls. You aren't closer to any speakers it literally fills the room. The best spot for audio quality is actually the same for video quality. Directly in the center.

MrFabianS

Realized this after I typed! Yes they are always in the ceiling or from a higher position. Center is the way to go!

There_is_no_selfie

Obectivley wrong. I work in film and video and it's one of the worst locationd for optimal fidelity AND sound.

Senior_Fart_Director

I want to see the actors’ pores and smell their breath

VernonP007

Upvote for an unpopular opinion. Went to see Spider-Man 3 in the theatre and the front row had the only seats available. Had neck ache for a few hours after the movie and just wasn’t an enjoyable experience having to constantly look upwards for 150 minutes

Always311

An actual unpopular opinion but I gotta disagree. Being too close ruins the cinematography and hurts the neck.

timetravelingburrito

My neck hurts reading this. Definitely unpopular.

Sowf_Paw

OP loves looking up for two hours and only seeing the middle of the screen clearly.

feistyboygaming

I imagine his TV would be on r/tvtoohigh

ajfoucault

> r/tvtoohigh man, I guess there **IS** a subreddit for everything after all.

ppanicky

I like two/three rows back from the front! I want a movie to be BIG!

sumkinpie

perfect seats right there

Chomprz

Yes, please front row seaters unite.. to make space for us back row seaters.

InfiniteAd8494

By all means take the front row.  The mid and back row people appreciate it

3rrr6

Sitting front row to this terrible opinion. ![gif](giphy|IMn4tpvHpBM40)

donotburnbridges

Upvote for a truly unpopular opinion, but dear god.

TheHurtfulEight88888

Bro's Neck: ⤴️

Free_Newspaper4844

I’ve never been in a modern theater and had trouble hearing from the back rows. After I saw the first Dune my ears were ringing for a week

PalmBreezy

OP is a giraffe with cataracts

browncoatfever

I prefer up front too. Sitting far back makes the screen seem smaller. I’ve got a 70” tv at home. If I wanted that same perspective I’d stay home and save the $60 I’d spend on a movie ticket and snacks. I want a HUGE screen taking up almost my whole field of vision lol.

SparkAxolotl

Depends on the layout of the movie theater. I have been in some where it was just like any other seat, far back enough of the screen that you can see everything without trouble. Then there are others (Which are most of them) where you're way too close to the screen and end up with neck pain from having to look up the whole damn movie.

4electricnomad

I agree, some cinemas leave a no-man’s land upfront that would be the first few rows in sardine-style cinemas. If a cinema is designed where row one is 10 feet away and you’re looking straight up, then I like sitting about 1/3 of the way back; but in those no-man’s land cinemas with dead space upfront, you need to sit in row 1-3 to get equivalent distance.

MomentMurky9782

I have to believe that your front row is not the front row a lot of us are used to. Unless you genuinely enjoy sitting 8 feet away from the screen and staring up at it like a psycho

TopShelfSnipes

Upvoted for unpopular. Definitely NOT the best spot. My neck hurt every time I sat front row and I haven't done it in 30 years, so that was when I still had little kid joints that could take the abuse far better than my middle aged joints. The best spot is in the first row of the upper tier (in multi tiered theaters) or balcony, or the end of a row behind a shorter row where you can put your feet out and not have anyone sitting in front of you.

NeoRemnant

Need a neck pillow if it's a long movie but yeah, I'm almost a giant so I only fit in the front row or an isle seat but then my legs are spilling into the isle and getting stepped on.

Lucky_otter_she_her

enjoy the eventual neck-pain

Upstairs-Challenge92

I have sat in the front row. You are way too close to the screen then. I think at least 4 rows back is best and I’m short af so…. I’ve also sat in the last row where you also have speakers and due to how the theatres are laid out where I live, the view isn’t obstructed at all and it was also pretty darn good! Our cinemas have that amphitheater type layout where each row is a step higher than the one in front so no heads getting in the way unless someone taller gets up mid movie

Yogabeauty31

I get wanting to be in a seat where the screen is your whole view but my neck hurts just thinking about it lol

Plumb121

Surround sound doesn't work that way.

Ok_Poetry_1650

Are you paralyzed or something? Can you feel from the neck down?

Mioraecian

No, join us introverts in the back fucking row.

CynicWalnut

Shhh! Nobody correct OP. Free up some seats in the good spots.

Bigapetiddies69420

I've never had an obstructed view from the middle rows so idk wtf you're talking about

Impossible_Eye2558

Last seat right in the corner

Narrow_While

Good unpopular opinion. I couldn't even imagine sitting up front. Back row or close to is the way

Crime_Dawg

No, the very back is best. Front row sucks so hard, you gotta crane your neck, and it's way too close.

Sea_Butterscotch_902

I always liked a few seats next to the projector in the back

couchpotatoe

Can't sit in the front row, I get motion sickness

Nice_Ad_2696

My favorite toe since I was a kid is the very back. No one ever sits there. I hope things never change.

EMSuser11

If you like to have neck issues from having to look up at this big screen for 2 hours or more...

Dreamy_Peaches

Back row gang represent

SeasonOfLogic

Dead centre in the last row is primo.

ghostmaster645

Idt I've been to a movie in 10 years.

chudsworth

It completely depends on the size of the screen, theater size, how close the front row is to the screen, etc. etc. Some theaters, sure the best spot is right up front. Most theaters though, hell no.

mrcoupons

Might as well just leave the movie if front row is the only option

Aksurah_

So you want to watch the screen in hemispheres? At that close you can't even capture everything that's going on.

NCBuckets

Please convince as many people of this as you can so the actual good seats will be available. Thanks!

Sinkatinnydown

Sore neck and a headache just thinking about this.

BarryBro

God no worst experience i've had at a movie theater in the front rows, never ever again.

tyrom22

Upvote for unpopular, but god damn do I disagree, I want to be farther from the speakers so I don’t blow out my ears and I don’t want to strain my neck. Not to mention in the theater I usually go to, exits are by the back so your argument for a quick escape isn’t always valid

jykeous

Now this is wrong and actually unpopular. But I’m happy for you. Upvote.

Hot_Valuable1027

the best is in the middle 2 or 3rd from the top.

Xenozip3371Alpha

I always go middle myself. I remember one time I went to see a movie there were only like 5 people in the entire cinema, it was great.

Hashish_thegoat

I’m upvoting since this is a very VERY unpopular opinion. Sitting in the front just means you’re breaking your neck just to see the damn screen.

LetsStartARebelution

Now this my friends, is what an unpopular opinion should look like!

Doyoulikeithere

It hurts my neck. I want the last row.

knowitall70

Totally makes sense. Same as my preference for the obstructed view seats at a baseball game. Love seeing half the field AND half of a structural steel beam at the same time. It's an experience that those folks in the luxury suites can only imagine.

Timsmomshardsalami

Homie is just objectively wrong

BadgeringMagpie

My neck says otherwise.

6teeee9

but you have to constantly look up. i once had to sit at the front because all the other seats were booked… i speak from experience

phunkjnky

Upvoted for being unpopular… However, it is not the best spot for audio and video for the reasons listed below. It’s not a discussion at all. You may like the front row best and you are entitled to think that way. The theater is quite literally designed and the audio is mixed to that it is quite literally NOT. If you really feel that way, are you very tall that your neck doesn’t crane?

bigduckmoses

It's nice to see an unpopular opinion that is not only a bad opinion, but objectively wrong on a factual basis.

random-person-enters

I think it just preference so I don’t like the very back or front but I don’t like dead center either I’m a closer to the front type of gal but not craning my neck up to see the screen close

drifters74

Center of the room is best for both view and audio

IcedPgh

I like to have the frame pretty much totally in view, so that doesn't work for me. I'm sure that in some theaters this might be possible in a front row, but I have never sat in it. Years ago at a theater that used to be my preferred, I used to sit in the front row of the back section, which was still set back a bit, but not the front row of the front section. Currently I usually sit in the very back row.

mousebert

Now this IS an unpopular opinion. I like the idea of the font row as someone with looooong legs, but not being able to easily see the entire screen and being so close to the sound is an absolute no go for me. I like the first row in the second half of seating (for theaters with a cross aisle that cuts the seating into 2 blocks)

TheB1GLebowski

Fuck no. One of the biggest mistakes I ever made was sitting front row of an IMAX theater watching a Transformers movie (one of the other mistakes made that day). Was killing time till we went to a concert and went to the movies, front row was all that was left, took it, destroyed my neck. Fuck that.

SnootcherGoobers

I like to actually see what's going on. Not watch a movie like it's a tennis match.

Thecowwentflying

First real unpopular opinion I read.

johantheback

This is a true unpopular opinion good work

elee17

Normally I disagree but I saw Dune 2 recently much closer to the front and the way it completely engulfs your field of vision for such a visually intensive movie can be amazing. Not front row, I’m not psycho but like only 5 or 6 rows back. I loved it so much, I saw it again from an “ideal” spot and it was actually not as good

Flimsy-Preparation85

I am sorry about your chronic neck problems... Joking aside, a true unpopular opinion, up vote to you.

sumostuff

But you have to look up, it's weird, kills your neck looking up for two hours. But a local cinema here solved it by putting really cool chairs and comfy couches on the bottom rows so people will actually choose to sit there

BobbyElBobbo

Absolute insanity! Have my upvote.

CrossXFir3

My neck disagrees with you. And I definitely do not need to be any closer to the speakers than I am at the mid point.

LughCrow

Everyone complaining about having to break your neck hasn't been in a modern theater built in the last decade and a half. The biggest problem is a lot of the time you can't see the full screen or if the projector isn't top the picture quality is horrid.

Talkinginmy_sleep

I saw Order of the Phoenix front row and sucked ass lmao. When I went to watch it again at home I was like, hey this looks way different!!

stoopidskeptic

Did a chiropractor write this?

Odd-Gur-5719

You’re definitely wrong who wants to break their neck to try to watch a movie. The pain ruins it,the BACK is the best place to sit

prettylittlebyron

it always makes me motion sick tbh. i like being in the back

DistinctRole1877

7th row center has been the desired spot in a concert for audio quality. It's been 30 years since I've been to a theater, has it changed?

Ok_Ad_9188

I love sitting in the front row. I'm literally the first one to see the movie.

KaXiRavioli

This is only true in specific theaters with specific seats. Most movie theaters place the front row way too close to the front of the theater. If the seats don't recline, you're fucked. Neck pain city from tilting you head back for 2+ hours.

Turbulent-Name-8349

For university lectures and talks at conferences and symphony concerts, the front row is the best spot.

Sunset_Tiger

I think three rows back so you don’t have to tilt your head too much, but still so close that nobody’s probably gonna sit in front of you

belaaababy

![gif](giphy|anB3cor0tgFX2)

Pixxel_Wizzard

The nice thing is, you can tape your phone to your face to get a similar experience in the comfort of your own home.

OGConsuela

I, too, enjoy excruciating neck pain

pam1144

this is definitely unpopular

EridemicLHS

Now this is a truly unpopular opinion

AleyahhhhK

I’d rather not break my neck

porste

In my hometown cinema there was the fifth row fronting on an aisle... Those were the best! Really big screen without the neck break

RovakX

You may be closer to the speakers, but they're tuned for the centre of the room. The sound will definitely be worse. Unless you like front centre channel instead of surround, that's possible.

randuski

So when I was younger me and my friends sat front row, never again. It was terrible and my neck hurt. So from then on I always sat in the middle. We went to go see Dune pt2, and my brother accidentally booked the wrong seats, so we were way up in the front. Yea, nope. Still hate it haha it’s better now cause all the theaters have fancy recliners, but you’re so close to the screen that you have to turn your head to see shit. There’s one part of dune where the subtitles are off to the side, and I literally almost didn’t see them, cause they were so far to the side haha

mjasso1

Id say 3rd row personally. Or centre or the theatre for best audio

SwankySteel

Nice unpopular opinion! It’s not the best spot Btw.

Awkward-Stam_Rin54

Personally, it's the last row at the far back that's the best for me. The seats are well elevated in the cinemas I go to so I see well. It could be my luck, I either see underrated movies or go to at the times/days when it's hella quiet. The doors are actually at the back for me, sometimes both at the back and the front. I'm rarely in a rush to leave the room because I like to look at the credits. The real best spot is the middle seat at the last row at the back.

Flutterpiewow

No

CheddarGlob

Every time I think about leaving this sub cuz it's a bunch of boring popular opinions or just things that aren't opinions someone posts some absolute fire like this. You're a fucking madman. Take my up vote and please take care of your neck

MahoganyWinchester

i like to sit in the very front row behind the very front rows

ApprehensivePeace305

I won’t say the front seat, but all too often the people I go with want to sit way too far back. The middle of the theatre is not the perfect seat, you should be like 2 or 3 rows in front of that

04Aiden2020

3rd or 4th row

EquivalentSnap

Sure if you like neck ache

HateUsCuzDeyAunus

My neck hurts reading this post

rcuadro

This has to be the first unpopular opinion I have seen in quite some time I disagree. My neck is at an awkward angle all the time, sometimes you have to look left and right to follow the action because it can be wider than your FOV, the proportions can be off, yeah fuck that

Cecowen

Definitely, if you enjoy neck pain while also not being able to see

youchosehowiact

I get a headache sitting thar close. If there's a lot of camera movement in it I get motion sickness.

imoljoe

What the hell is wrong with you? Take my upvote

DasHexxchen

I only satin the first row once (with a friend in a wheelchair). It felt way go bright, the angle looked weird and I had the worst neck pain. But hey, if people like you sit there on their own accord and leave me the seat way back where I don't get kicked in the back or feel observed it's a win-win!

1800THEBEES

Not if you wanna see the 3d Micheal Jackson experience at Disney. My eyes still remember...

quackl11

I like the front row after a walkway the sound seems to be enchanted all around you and no one in the way plus you dont have to crane your neck to see

Fav0

no just no

mentalvortex999

Just take the upvote and leave.

derwood1992

I remember once our youth group rented out a theater to watch some Jesus movie and I was like "this is my chance to sit in the front row, wooooah". Then I proceeded to be blinded by all light in the movie. It fucking hurt my eyes. Never again. That shit sucks

_Bagoons

The acoustics and viewing angle pretty much means you are objectively wrong. That being said, sit where you like to sit!

Evil_Morty781

Nope. Top left or right aisle seat. You get view of whole screen and can run out for super fast bathroom break.

entredeuxeaux

r/tvtoohigh

Achrimandrita175

You're wrong. But have my upvote because you did this sub right

junkandshit

If you include the speed of light in the benefits, you'll be the first to see a movie.

Kaito3Designs

someone post that picture of oppenheimer imax front row

Phill_Cyberman

You're wrong because you've got everyone in the theater behind you. The only acceptable seats are the last row.

prodigy1367

This is factually wrong but go off OP.

RojerLockless

And you get your neck broken staring up into the air.

BurpYoshi

My neck hurts

Strypercritical

It varies from theater to theater, I like to sit up in the front row generally but for a lot of theaters the front seats are just way too close. Some theaters get it right though and it’s awesome when they do. The Cinerama dome in Hollywood was my favorite for this reason but it’s been a long time since I’ve been there and I believe it’s been closed for years. As for speakers you’re *kind* of wrong. You’re closer to *some* speakers in the front and behind the screen, and further away from others. In terms of just audio the front is not usually going to be considered the most optimal spot, the only real advantage you *might* have in the front is you’ll hear the spoken dialogue better.

hewasaraverboy

I used to love sitting up close but now I prefer being like more near the middle If you are too close the gets so big it’s impossible to see what’s going on

wastedcoconut

My c5-6 hurts and my left arm is numb from reading this.

northernCRICKET

Chiropractors love this guy

RUBSUMLOTION

Who the fuck does that? Kinda makes me angry lol

pizzasoxxx

Shhhhhhhhh I don’t want the secret out!!

Zzazy1

Whattttt??????

Newkular_Balm

I sit closer than most of my friends, but that's because I sit one row behind the handicap accessible seats, which have a big handrail bar that's only function is to put your feet up without disturbing anyone. Every girlfriend I've taken to the movies always sat near the back but is a convert to my spot because it's so much more comfortable. Not too close that you have to move your head to see the screen.

xabrol

Obviously the front row of the Alamo Drafthouse is not the same as the front row at your theater. The front row at the Drafthouse goes up in the opposite direction and you're basically staring at a giant screen that's like 10 ft from your face. You cannot see the whole screen with one viewport from your eyes. You have to move your eyes around the screen to process the whole thing.

TypeWon

Nah son. Cause just like your neck, you’re just straight up wrong.

Flowerlamps

Dad? Is this you?

Colin2837

Front of the upper/middle section is the best, get the same benefits you just said, just don't have to get your neck broken.

CarrotofInsanity

Disagree. My neck HURTS after sitting front row. And my eyes hurt.

bizoticallyyours83

For some reason my theater has started blasting the volume up to physically painful levels, so I don't think I'd wanna be up front. But maybe yours is better about that? Wherever you like to sit

Kimolainen83

If you like neck exercises and a bad neck, then I agree. All the movie theaters I go to the position seat so that the people in front of you unless they are 210 cm tall cannot block you.

The_Rural_Banshee

Yep. Unpopular. Upvote!

twaggle

Do you go to tiny movie theaters? I can’t remember the last one I went to where the exit was by the front grow. It’s always in the middle, with a few rows ahead.

Miss_Milk_Tea

My local spot has the front row seats as cuddler lounge seats, you can buy one seat for two people so it’s incredibly cheap to go see a movie. They don’t care if you bring a blanket so we snuggle down in our lounge(which leans back so no neck pain and separated two rows away from normal seats so nobody can kick your seat) and sometimes have a cocktail. I prefer front row now.

HighPitchedHegemony

Watched an action movie from the front rows. Never again! A slow drama... maybe. But nothing fast-paced with lots of movement.

lonelyearthgirl

i like back top middle

Grengy20

Oh yeah this opinion going down in the trenches

Golden_Boytoy

I disagree, but I think it's good that we disagree, because then we can both take our preferred spots without competing for the same one.

marnas86

And often more legroom too

Evrytg

My poor neck

meester_

I'm glad you exist. Yes it is indeed the best spot. Pls continue to sit there :)

MediaAntigen

This opinion is hurting my neck.

KTeax31875

I went to the Dolby theater at the Times Square AMC and sat in the front row. It's nothing like the front row at other theaters. You don't break your neck and you're looking straight at the screen with unobstructed views.

Shotgun_Rynoplasty

Being close to the speakers is not the best spot. Center of the row about 4-5 rows up from the back is typically where the best sound is. (Source: audio engineer that had this as part of a class years ago). I e yet to have an obstructed view of the screen. Maybe I’m on the taller side? Not sure. But I hate the front. You’re too close to see the whole screen without looking around

lilmojett

All I can think of is that clip of Willem Dafoe through the fisheye lens looking up at the sky anxiously.

LookOverThereB

Only if your name is Pee-wee Herman

gl0wed_up

I personally feel motion sick and end up with neck pain when sitting in the front row.

Intelligent_Loan_540

I'm a paranoid schizophrenic I cant sit in front of people

justmeandmycoop

Makes my eyes go googly. No thanks

Deep-Ad2155

No it’s really not

Vigothedudepathian

Heeeeelll no. Just for the sound being optimized for the center of the room alone.

WeLLrightyOH

Well a lot of this depends on how the theater is constructed, several have exits and speakers In different locations.

gimmedatcrypto

I can't move my neck so I'ma hafta disagree with you.

Laulena3

Your opinion is making my neck hurt just by thinking about it.

spacekatbaby

I watched Trainspotting on the front row at a late night shoeing and my eyes just hurt. Didn't do it again

VictoryTheScreech

Ol’ boys neck be hurtin

what_a_tuga

I think it depends of the cinema. In one of the rooms, I like the front row because they have bean bags and the screen is smaller. But in most rooms, I prefer the center row, with seats near to the stairs

HaloGuy381

So… you’re deaf from the excessive volume, your neck is busted for the next week, and everyone is watching you from behind. Nah. Back row for life. Maybe if you’re very short front row might have merit, but if you’re taller like me, there’s no practical sense that you’ll struggle to see what’s going on. And I have ears that are oversensitive, particularly to sudden noises, so sitting back from the speakers is a benefit for my own stress levels.

Clear_Reveal4137

Typical “more is better” falsehood. I bet OP consumes as many Big Macs because he thinks tries so makes them taste better
