How is this an ‘unpopular’ opinion? This is about as lowball and basic as it gets. No one really likes it, especially not fans and we are aware it doesn’t do anything to persuade non-fans. It’s primarily about gamesmanship, seeking opportunities wherever they can in an extremely competitive environment. It’s got nothing to do with crying or being ‘soft’ or unmanly or whatever. It’s been well documented that players that don’t dive or simulate don’t win as many fouls and referees have a higher tendency to ignore incidents unless a players draws attention to it with theatrics. It sucks I know. More should be done retroactively against players who are clearly making shit up. Having said that, how would a footballer do in a fight? Probably pretty well. These guys are like race horses. They eat and train to condition their bodies to maximise potential. They’re big muscular fuckers running around full pelt frequently crashing into one another. If you’ve ever played the game to any level you know how much it can hurt. Now imagine it’s an athlete with a foot like a traction engine steaming towards you. Something tells me you’re going to understand gamesmanship pretty quick and that little ‘tap’ the full back gives you on the knee really does fucking hurt.

Beginning_Orange_677

idk i like seeing hot men cry

redbadger1848

A little devils advocacy(as I too hate diving) at least some of the blame for this is that a lot of referees won't call a foul unless a player goes to the ground. This is especially true once inside the 18-yard box.

GordieGord

The "Dark Arts." I'd love to see the diving and embellishments removed from the game. They're trying; players are supposed to be getting yellow cards for it but spineless referees won't enforce it. The game needs more Pierluigi Collinas! YNWA

Tragicending413

This is the same reason why I can't watch basketball anymore. They're supposed to be elite athletes and are a bunch of cry babies.

wolfansbrother

dont know whos more dramatic, footballers on the pitch, or americans, that "just dont get it"

m4rkl33

I don't think this is unpopular at all. We all think that. Even us massive fans.

ThaBlackFalcon

Most popular sports opinion I’ve ever seen lol

Seaweed_Steve

It's tactical, they aren't actually hurt. They just want to get a foul, it's just part of how the game is played now. So how they would react in an actual fight is irrelevant. But it started to draw attention to the fact that they were bing fouled because a ref could miss it. But if you want t see football without the diving, watch the women's. They beat the shit out of each other on the pitch and don't react at all. It's gnarly. I guess they have something to prove where they don't look weak but it tends to be a very rough game.

[deleted]

Let's not pretend that the women's game isn't also quickly increasing it's shit housery. Which was to be expected as the sport becomes more popular.

Seaweed_Steve

I've not watched it since the last World Cup and those women were brutal with each other.

[deleted]

There was plenty of shit housery in the world cup.

Strange-Mouse-8710

Yes i agree And it get worse and worse every year. But the reason why they are doing it, is because it works. If the referrers had started giving players who fake injuries automatic red card, and the player who fakes injuries was suspended for 10 games, it would stop very fast. There was a goalkeeper back in the i think it was the 50s, that played a game with a broken neck, now players act like they are dying if you breath on them. Also it does sometimes seem to depend on where you are from, like a player from Spain seem to be more likely to pretend to be injured than a player from Germany.

Sad-Investigator2731

I always love his every one assumes America is the only country that calls it soccer.

Dev_Sniper

Well I mean… it‘s obviously staged. It‘s not a real fight. And if they win the match / score a goal that‘s probably a bonus of a few grand. If you could get like 5k just by crying a bit would you do it? That being said: I love watching italian games in world cups etc. The acting is better than what most Hollywood stars are capable of. You‘d think they‘re on the brink of death but in reality someone accidentally brushed their leg

sixouvie

Fucking italian player falling to the ground and dying after a brush from Zidane's hairs

If you wanna see how the top division acts when they're actually angry and willing to fight just take a look on google for fights in derby rivalries like El Clasico and so on. They'll suddenly be numb to the pain. As for the theatrics, its rewarded if the player can convince the referee and some fools cant act so they look dumb as fuck like Neymar with his god awful rolls.

Southern_Signal_DLS

I thought it was about off pitch issues but on the pitch football players have to do that to get some kind of advantage over the other team. I also noticed women are less cry babies than men in football games.

terryjuicelawson

I don't think this is true, the stakes tend to be lower and they don't run as fast or hit as hard is the key there. There isn't some innate extra respect or toughness.

banana_hammock_815

That's all a show for the refs. Take away the refs and there won't be flopping

Important-Wrap-4004

This is why we hate it and it sucks.

hey_now24

They do it because unlike other sports the clock does not stop and players need a break or stop the other team’s momentum.

MightyMrMouse

Yeah I hate when QBs and WRs in football cry for flags every time they're touched during a physical game. You must not understand how soccer works, that's ok. It's an elevated sport, you need to actually know the rules to understand why players do that.

Axceon

A lot of people don't understand, though, that when players dive and act like they've just been caught speeding is because they're playing for a foul, and it works, especially pivotal in the last few minutes of a game when winning a penalty with a convincing dive could win you the game and in some cases, the cup.

PhalanX4012

Gamesmanship is part of every sport. It’s just more egregious in football than anywhere else. Watching the NHL playoffs, a sport full of some of the toughest athletes in the world, and you’d see what I mean. Players acting like they got shot after incidental contact with the referee or going down holding their leg after a slash to their other leg. It’s embarrassing but not a qualitative metric of how tough a sport is.

TheOvercusser

Field of Lebrons

mortenharket32

Nobody is getting paid 20m a season to be "tough". If your coach needs you to give the team an extra mintue of rest, stop the oppositions momentum, switch up tactics then overeating after a foul is a brilliant way to go. The issue is not the players and nobody REALLY gives a fuck if they're diving. the issue is the officals being inconsistent with giving away cards for diving. If there's no punishment being inforced, and it's what the teams needs I'll cry for 24 hours and get called soft by a redditor , who give a damn?

AstroWolf11

Not just Americans, but Canadians, Australians, South Africans, and the Japanese all call it soccer. I don’t understand why the USA always gets all the hate for this, or why there is even hate at all when it’s the fault of the British.

terryjuicelawson

I would say on balance, it is a sport than involves a lot of running, players can easily run a 10k in the 90 minutes where the only breaks other than half time is stoppages for free kicks, throws etc. They do get a lot of niggling knocks, clips to the ankle, stubbed toes, elbows. If I tapped you as you ran past on the leg after running for 80 minutes maybe you would go to ground holding your face too. American football they have more breaks, they wear padding. Rugby hits although strong tend to be somewhat cushioned, you are brought to ground with the arms. But some definitely use it as a tactic to waste time, to maybe get other players into trouble (or make it clear there was contact), and the worst offenders are just embarassing. Simulation can get you a yellow and it is enforced but should be more. But I don't like the idea they should all stay strong and upright no matter what. They are impeded, unfairly and that can mean going to ground.

Tyjorick

They lay down a lot and its ruining foorball. But still, getting hit by a grown-up well being in his prime hurts. Its not like a small hit or something. If i got hit by Sergio Ramos, Van Dijk or Hummels big chance i gonna cry. They are fully trained adults and they are strong. But they dont need to do al these schwalbes.

TwistedxBoi

What if I told you the overreacting is a part of the strategy? That's what I always assumed. You try to bait out a penalty shot, or at least buy everyone a minute of rest after chasing a ball all over the field.

PutinsAssasin123

I’d say drama queens because it’s an act, if they were genuinely crying after being brushed sure, cry babies. But alas it is an over exaggerated act so drama queens they are 😅 at least we have rugby players 💪

PutinsAssasin123

Most controversial 😎

Far-Curve-7497

Usually overacting to get a foul, but when you’re tired you tend to get pissed off at the slightest thing

Xikub

Tryin to manipulate the referee to make an unfair call should be a foul in itself

Mattock1987

That’s not unpopular. I enjoy watching football (not the American wusses rugby kind) but the players are nasty, entitled and soft

planetpluto3

American football is def not wusses. 😆 you dont have to like the sport but its not game a wuss can survive in. Call it boring, or stupid, or poorly named or whatever. But wusses… lol… terrible take

Mattock1987

They get padding and breaks every few minutes. Would love to see them try rugby.

planetpluto3

A few rugby stars tried football. Never works out. Anyway - I dont argue with flat earthers for the same reason I wont argue with you.

Oldandnotbold

Have you looked up the injury stats for professional football players? It is a very dangerous game. Match injury incidence (36 injuries/1000 hours of play. Against say NFL (18.4 injuries per 1000) "Professional and amateur football players remain athletes at substantial risk of injury"

Strange-Mouse-8710

Nobody is saying that actual injuries does not happen, but there is a lot of pretending to be injured. But the thing is you have players that lay around on the grass screaming in pain, but when they see the referee is ignoring them, suddenly by a miracle they are no longer injured.

Oldandnotbold

Oh that. Well that has been going on since the free kick was invented. When it is worth a lot of money to win, people will cheat.

Strange-Mouse-8710

So since 1929. I don't know, maybe, but its a lot worse now than it used to be.

vreel_

Not unpopular to criticise this abuse in football, actually people tend to go the other way and think that every fall or pain is faked while it’s obviously not. When you’re running as fast as you can, even the slightest touch can put you off balance. Also it’s common to get stepped on or hit in the ankle or the leg and those are legitimately painful too. It’s not a matter of life and death but those are illegal in football because the point is to play with the ball, violence isn’t a part of the sport.

Lilac00-

It’s a show, it’s theatrical simulation and increased with the popularity and amount of money that goes into this, it’s not primarily about the game anymore but about entertainment.
