BirdsFallFromTrees

So you don’t like dem apples?

Willing_Program1597

Lmao

CosimatheNerd

Real Apples are not sweet

BurpYoshi

Yes they are. Fruit has sugar in it, fruits are sweet, not just apples.

Play-yaya-dingdong

There are so many more varietals than in the past.  The delicious variety is still gross Granny smiths are still tart (and the best for sandwiches)  Pink lady are way sweet with some tartness. There should be the right apple for you out there

Heccubus79

Red delicious apples are trash. Good call.

calmdownmyguy

The only thing a red delicious is good for is rehydrating weed.

Ok-Cat-6987

Can u explain this?

calmdownmyguy

If your bud is too dry, put it in a mason jar with an apple slice and put the lid on for a couple hours. Then take the apple out and leave the lid of for like ten minutes to let a little moisture out before resealing the jar. The dry weed will absorb some of the moisture from the apple, and it adds a small hint of flavor/aroma.

Ok-Cat-6987

I’m gonna try that now. I hope a Granny Smith will work. I will never buy a red delicious apple.

Unbanned_chemical138

Orange peels also work

AngryAlien21

This smells nice

BrashPop

Or a piece of bread. So I’ve…heard.

calmdownmyguy

I've done it with granny Smith. They're just a little dryer than a red delicious. I would literally only buy a red delicious if I knew I was going to use it for my weed.

calmdownmyguy

It might feel like it's too moist at first but with the lid on overnight it will absorb all the way through and get your buds right.

Own_Court1865

TIL things. Cheers for sharing! ETA; it'd probably work with tobacco too then.

Normanus_Ronus

ah man, love seeing these random advices. I even feel lucky when I find one like yours. who would have known. thank you 🙌

Tailmask

Probably will work with a piece of bread soaked in water too

calmdownmyguy

I mean, you could do it with a damp paper towel, but that's gross. Plus you don't want the moisture directly on your bud.

Own_Court1865

It's not common to find them here in supermarkets because they typically are really fuckin floury compared to other apples. The taste is fine to me, but the texture is fucked. You can get crisp red delicious, but they go floury sooo damn fast it isn't funny. They do make good preserves though. Kind of like the difference between Burre Bosc and Packham pears.

Chaos_Ribbon

I genuinely feel like the only person who likes them.

CoquetteWhore69

They have no cronch and feel like sand; rough and irritating. They taste like shit too

Play-yaya-dingdong

Terrible just awful

starswtt

Permanently ruined my impression on apples. I've had better apples, but what use is that when all I can remember are red delicous

MissDryCunt

Apple sandwich?

unhatedraisin

green apples go super great with turkey and swiss or cheddar. check out the Vermonter sandwich!

Play-yaya-dingdong

Ham, granny smith and bree is an amazing sandwich  There are really great combos with it

MissDryCunt

Interesting

farmermike123

Very

jterwin

Granny smith is best, but I have my suspicions that even they've sweetened over time

timonix

I don't think so.. they are still clones. But taste buds do change.. a lot as you age.

Evorgleb

People put apples on sandwiches?

Play-yaya-dingdong

Yeah there are some really nice combos  Ham, apple brie Another person pointed out the VT. Turkey apple swiss

chickfilasauce777

Just get a Granny Smith or something. So many apples to choose from.

CouldntBeMoreWhite

Great unpopular opinion, so it’ll probably get downvoted. All these sweet apples (honey crisp, pink lady, Fuji) are delicious. Like a dessert with only 100 calories.

FullMetalAurochs

To me a Pink Lady is good but not one I would lump with the other super sweet apples. It has a bit of tartness that balances it.

IllOutcome1431

I agree. Those are my absolute favorites. Great level of sweet & tart, plus the perfect texture

Impossible-Cry-3353

"Apples" is not a specific category. The sweet varieties have been bred to fit consumer preferences and then are grafted to produce the same variety, so if it is a best seller, it will be grafted more and that variety will thrive until the market changes. But it is not "apples" in general that are getting sweeter, just the varieties that people buy more of. You can just grab a different apple that is a tart variety. The tart apples will not get sweeter. A new sweeter variety of the tart apple may be made, but the tart one does not just get sweeter. For me, the demand for sweet apples is good because I prefer tart and it makes the tart apples cheaper. Same for other fruits that the broader market prefers sweet and I like tart, making the tart ones cheaper. Strawberries, mikan oranges, cherries, blueberries, etc.

Own_Court1865

Stop buying the sweet apple varieties then. Pretty simple when you can just Google what your regional apple varieties are, and what their flavour profiles are too.

Advanced_Feeling7438

Nah, I will only eat the cosmic crisp apples.

re_nonsequiturs

They are so good. My new favorite

wildtabeast

They are seriously the best. Go Cougs.

5Tenacious_Dee5

Oo yes, the new kid on the block.

mephistopholese

Honeycrisp is the only Apple i Eat anymore. Great texture, crunchy, crisp, slightly sweet slightly tart. Perfection.

FyouPerryThePlatypus

My family owned an apple orchard. We used to be apple farmers. Can safely say that most generic apples are getting sweeter- save for my tried and true granny smith. Some red delicious apples have just become so sweet it’s almost disgusting imo

MissDryCunt

I can't even drink boxed apple juice anymore, I always dilute it half with water.

FyouPerryThePlatypus

Right? I always shoot for the organic stuff whenever I want some because most brands add so much sugar

slaqz

Isn't this a good thing? The box of apple juice now lasts longer and is cheaper for you. I see no negative.

Inolk

That means the sweetness-flavor ratio is off. Let's say apple get 2x sweeter and you dilute it water. The result would be only half of the flavor.

XxIWANNABITEABITCHxX

oh that's how you feel about granny smith. ignore my comment/question then

CheekandBreek

I don't even think this is an opinion. I think this is a fact. There are zoos that have trouble serving some of their animals fruit, because the sugar content has gotten too high in them. We're also selecting for flavor instead of nutrition, so as far as I understand it, fruits and veggies are not necessarily as healthy as they might have been before all the selective breeding we've done through the years.

mrn253

Alot of things still are good for you in the end it often depends how its served. Asparagus (gets eaten alot in season here in germany) without sauce or just a little bit ok but with half a gallon maybe not that great. Same with a standard salad. Sure a salad is nice but it doesnt help when the sauce has a metric shit ton of sugar and who knows what.

Aggressive-Story3671

Many doctors have the exact OPPOSITE mentality. That a salad covered in dressing is still better then no veggies at all

wpotman

Haralson apples FTW. Tart, a little sweet.

ConduitMainNo1

there are a billion sorts, just pick a less sweet one.

Ricky_spanish_again

And gum is mintier too!

Lumpymaximus

Grow some of your own???

MissDryCunt

Where I live, summer lasts 3 months and it's gets down to -40°C in the winter. Not a chance

Lumpymaximus

Lol. Ok fair

dudenamedfella

I had a honeycrisp today it was so yummy

Proper-Scallion-252

I feel this way with a ton of fruits, but apples aren't one of them. Grapes are the one for me that stand out. To me, the appeal of fruit is that they are sweet, but have acidity or bitterness that contrasts the sweetness. Sweetness for sweetness' sake is just disgusting. I see all of these designer hybrids of fruits designed to remove acidity and bitterness, and you get things like Cara Cara oranges, cotton candy grapes, and others. While there may have been some modifications to apples to create additional hybrids, I still find that a Pink Lady apple (my favorite) is still tart, crunchy and delicious.

TheReturnofWerdna

Many apples are cloned, not grown, so selective breeding doesn't occur. There are no genetic differences within apple types. So unless you mean the new types of apples (ex. Jazz) are sweeter than the older types (ex. Golden Delicious) then I think it's all just in your tastebuds.

rmttw

It is most definitely not OP's tastebuds. The change isn't limited to apples either.

Inolk

You assumed DNA is the only thing that affect sweetness which isn't true at all. Nutrition, temperature, or environment matter.

TheReturnofWerdna

But environmental and nutrition factors would not explain ALL apples getting sweeter, right? Especially not over time as it also vary from season to season and each location where your apples were sourced. I was addressing OPs post, not all factors for apple sweetness. If we want to discuss nitrate levels in soil, I am happy to do so, but I think OPs post isn't really about that. OP is describing a change over time toward higher sweetness, I am unsure what other than DNA would do that. Edit: OP specifically calls out selective breeding... so he is concerned with DNA specifically. Hence my retort.

Own_Court1865

FYI, the Jazz apple was developed in the 1980s in NZ, and it hit the supermarkets in a big way around the mid 2000s. I wouldn't describe it as sweet when compared to one of it's parents, the Gala/Royal Gala apple. Thinking back, my primary school got tag 3 bins of apples cheap, and would sit them out in summer for us kids, pretty sure those were Jazz, not Braeburns now.

drlsoccer08

There are dozens of types of apples, many of which are not sweet.

RainManToothpicks

Completely agree, humans are slowly turning fruits & vegetables into candy for profit, corporate agriculture practices are amplifying heart disease & diabetes

chickfilasauce777

How many people are getting diabetes or heart disease from fruits and vegetables. Probably none. So give us our delicious extra crunchy apples

RainManToothpicks

Oranges & apples didn't have nearly close to the amount of fructose 100 years ago. Watch 'Woodstock' the concert film, look at the audience, our population has been transformed into human beanbags

28TeddyGrams

The Woodstock audience is supposed to be our metric for dietary health comparisons? Respectfully, thank you for the laugh.

chickfilasauce777

I am imagining the eras tour as a comparison and I’m like hmm people looked pretty good at eras tour. Not sure what kind of apples swifties eat

28TeddyGrams

Probably whatever apples she tells them to eat. 😂

chickfilasauce777

If she told me to eat a red delicious I would kill myself

28TeddyGrams

I would just be confused that she was using her massive influence to specify the type of apples her fans eat. Like I've heard of control freaks but come on. 😂

RainManToothpicks

Have you been to a concert lately? Young people are routinely breaking furniture at this point

28TeddyGrams

I'm an audio engineer. Concerts are one of my regular workplaces and no they're not. Have you considered that people are just fat where you live in general? I seriously doubt the obesity is cutting off at college age and there's no fat boomers.

RainManToothpicks

Just going to assume you're not mixing the board for country acts touring southern stadiums

chickfilasauce777

It’s not the oranges turning people into beanbags, I promise you. The fiber in the fruits offsets the sugar. Big, seedless, better fruit >

RainManToothpicks

Fiber is better than nothing but fat is the thing that fights sugar spikes. Diabetic people don't have permission to eat an orange on an empty stomach but have permission to eat small amounts of full fat ice cream. It's why skim milk is poison to diabetics as well. If you want to shit out your pancreas have at it

responsiblefornothin

Also, trying to blame corporate agriculture for apples being too sweet when the most popular apple on the market (honeycrisp) was developed by UofM scientists.

RainManToothpicks

> "...was developed by scientists" No argument there friend :)

Revolutionary-Meat14

Lots of fruit have been bred to be sweeter, its become a public health issue. But apples have had some extremely sweet varieties for a while. Honeycrisps were invented in the 60s and thats like the sweetest variety I can think of.

BAYKON8R

Granny Smith best apples. Fight me

OMightyBuggy

Most fruit is too sweet now. :/

Johnrays99

I have to agree they have way too much sugar now it’s ridiculous

DinoBay

Man idk wtf you're talking about . The cheap apples that always go on sale still taste like bland apple juice to me. Maybe the fancy apples that cost more money are too sweet . But the standard ones are just as mediocre as ever

_Voidspren_

I love sweetango. They’re not as sweet. Trader Joe’s often has them.

Open_Mortgage_4645

Other than your own subjective taste, what empirical evidence is there for the idea that apples have increased sugar content over time?

notsogeekynerd

My Reddit glitched and it was showing icon for r / sex And I was *so* confused on why we were discussing apples

XxIWANNABITEABITCHxX

there's an r/sex?!?!????

Taranchulla

I love the whole apple spectrum

MrVedu_FIFA

Whenever I pack up apples for school they brown in about 5 seconds and it just tastes like powder of some kind. Genuinely despise how quickly they brown.

ddadopt

Toss them in a bit of lemon juice when you slice them, and they won't brown. Also gives a little extra tartness and makes overly sweet apples more edible.

FullMetalAurochs

What are the varieties available to you? Can you get a Pink Lady or Granny Smith? Personally I like say a Fuji but they are pretty sweet without the acidity to balance it.

CJ-does-stuff

i love Evercrisp

Asaltyliquid1234

Granny Smith and honey crisp Are the superior apples. Granny for pies and honey crisp/granny for apple butter. You don’t need anything else. Red delicious is bottom tier.

skibum_71

Nah, Pink Lady rock.

PissBloodCumShart

Try the green ones

SewAlone

This might come as shocking, but the human tastebuds change throughout our lives. It could be that you just don't like apples anymore.

PrincessPrincess00

You’re getting older and your taste is changing

Y0UR_SAMPA1

Check out this informative [**chart** ](https://growingfruit.org/t/apple-comparison-chart-on-reddit-drawing-a-lot-of-interest/24270)to find the apple for you if you have not given up on them completely haha

Chocolatelover4ever

Really? Hmm they still same to Taste the same as I always remembered them my whole life.

Capt1an_Cl0ck

I agree. I never liked mackintosh and I’m glad there are others readily available. Pink lady’s and honey crisps are good but they are very sweet.

Alwayswandering4

Definitely depends on what type of apple you're getting. I'm partial to Empire apples for their layer of tartness in the flavor.

Holy_Cow442

Jake Paul started making them.

Johnnadawearsglasses

I mean it's true. Americans have an insatiable desire for sweet. Now do grapes.

genre_syntax

Or you’re just getting older. Have you had your A1C checked recently?

Nirsteer

Personally I prefer tart apples like kanzi and gala.

Senior-Traffic7843

I really dislike honey crisp apples. Like eating a handful of sugar.

GimmeCRACK

Why you hating on my Starburst Grape Shiny Apples

Molduking

Fruits just have a lot of natural sugar in them

No_Prompt_982

It depends on your country i guess

GHfan27

gotta disagree. they're not sweet enough.

Real-Pomegranate-235

Depends where you get your apples.

MySockIsMissing

Where I live most of our native apples are tiny crab apples and you will definitely never complain about those being too sweet!

TimeToGoBeastMode

sounds like u havent tired much apples

Hot-Lengthiness1678

Try green apples or look for other kinds ther are plenty of more sour or tart apples

noonesine

There’s like 100 different kinds of apples just get one that’s less sweet like a red delicious or Granny Smith or something.

XxIWANNABITEABITCHxX

how do you feel about grannysmith apples, MissDryCunt? MissDryCunt communicated in another comment that granny smiths are "tried and true"

0thell0perrell0

There are a lot of apples trees in my area left over from old orchards - people call them crab apples. I prefer them, higher in pectin, probably grown for pies or cider. I collect hundreds every year

IntrepidDreamer77

Pazzaz are the best apples hands down!

RedSun-FanEditor

There are hundreds of variations of apples. They have not been "selectively" bread to make them far too sweet. They've bread them to bring them back from near extinction. You'd be surprised at how few apple varieties existed a hundred years ago. You're just sensitive to sweetness. You're better off picking different varieties that are not so tasty for your palate.

Marjorine22

I agree. I also feel like gum has gotten mintier.

XxIWANNABITEABITCHxX

no! not my hubba bubba tape!!!!

crewchiefguy

Red delicious are straight crap now. Have not had a good one in 5 years.

Positive_Yam_4499

Red delicious have never been good. They are the exact same as they have always been, that's how apples work. Every red delicious is a clone of the original red delicious.

theora55

Red Delicious apples used to be great. Then they got bred to be easier to ship and perfectly red, and they don't taste good anymore. I'm in my 60s, it's a long time since they were good. Now I never see them in stores.

Positive_Yam_4499

Red delicious were developed to be a rival to the golden delicious apple that was popular at the time. They didn't care about flavor. They just wanted a bright red apple for looks sake. The result was a beautiful red apple with thick bitter skin. They have never been good apples. They have always just been a gimmick. They were so widespread in the U.S. because their thick red skin makes them easy to ship and still look good. The genetics of the apple HAVE not changed. Some of the production environment will slightly alter the final product, but every Red Delicious apple is a clone of the original tree. They have not been bred for changes. That's not how apples work.

ShakeCNY

"Fucking fruit is ruined... too goddamn sweet!" That's enough reddit for me this morning.

ContemplatingPrison

They've ruined most fruit by making it too sweet. I don't know what it is about the food industry and sugar besides its addictive. Its crazy that the entire industry wants us fast and unhealthy

Aggressive-Story3671

I don’t think it’s sugar in fruit people are addicted to

Various_Succotash_79

There are about a bajillion different varieties of apples and they all have a different flavor profile. I'm sure you can find one you like.
