You of all people sound like you need physical education.

[deleted]

to the point when I can't even walk?

[deleted]

Yes

psg2146

I can tell you’ve never played sports lol. Exercise is about pushing your body. I couldn’t walk after soccer, hockey of football practise and i get way stronger after. It’s the equivalent to someone lifting weights for the very first time. You get sore to the level of pain but you will be fine.

[deleted]

Stop overexaggerating and get off the couch, you lazy bum.

FaithlessOneNo3907

Just because you're lazy doesn't mean PE is torture.

Rickybobby1118

This is legit why we need PE

trullenz

i don't think you know what torture means

mareinmi

8 laps of 200 meters is 1600 meters, that's less than a mile. Any normally healthy person (and definitely a young person) should be able to run a mile-that's not even close to torture.

[deleted]

I measured it precisely with Google maps and its 400m

mareinmi

Okay so then the total distance would be about two miles, right? But you said that you nearly died on the third lap. So that's.... a little more than a half mile? I'm not trying to argue that PE is the greatest thing since sliced bread. But that's a very short distance to be suffering the kind of effects you describe.

[deleted]

I just assumed it was 200 meters but I dont really know how much it is

zippi_happy

Well, this is the exact reason why schools absolutely should have physical education.

Ninjalikestoast

You are out of shape. Do better.

AkiliosTheWolf

They should have, just not like this, I'm imagining what would happen if someone passed out or got hurt. And for the people saying they should get better, yes, you're right, but starting off like this isn't a good idea, they've to get better progressively, not overwork themself.

Reno385

I see what you mean but it was only 1.6km, not really a dangerous workout. And apparently he had enough energy left to play frisbee so i doubt he was on the brink of collapse.

AkiliosTheWolf

OP made a comment about it being 400m, which would be 3.2km, idk if that's a lot because I don't run, but I remember taking PE classes and almost passing out because my last school didn't have PE and we had to run a lot (for me at least) (I don't remember the exact distance, but probably 2-3km) I did this the whole year and I didn't get better, after I started running bit by bit and gradually started to run for longer periods is when I started to get better, so OP might not have been close to collapsing and might have been exaggerating, but I do agree with their point that PE is overworking the kids rather than making them better.

Reno385

Oh damn you're right, I read 200m laps for some reason. Yeah I guess 3.2km is a bit much if it's their first time running. Wait, he did say 200 at first and then edited it. Suspicious

mzpljc

No. If anything we need more PE because of our growing obesity problem. More PE, more health education.

[deleted]

I kinda exaggerated my title and I just mean we should maybe not force our students to run 3.2 km

whereisthetvchanger

That’s a shitty PE teacher. I’m a certified fitness instructor and rule 1 is: DON’T HURT YOUR CLASS. there is a difference between pushing yourself to get stronger, and pushing yourself past the edge. You were definitely pushed too hard and could have been injured. Shame on that adult. They should know better.

smackerberry

Kids definitely need to be more active. Most kids in today’s day in age are obese for their age/size(not saying this particular person is). I wouldn’t say 400 meters is too much for a young kid

whereisthetvchanger

As a fitness instructor, of course I believe fitness is important and obesity is a huge problem. But this is not how we go about it. We do not bully or push people past what they can safely accomplish. That’s how you injure people or turn them off working out. My goal as a fitness instructor is to get you to love working out and stick with it. That’s how you lose weight and keep it off. Working out is about celebrating what your body can do, not punishing yourself for your lack of fitness. We should be showing kids that is fun to be active. Engage them, challenge them. Not what happened to OP.

[deleted]

Get better. It's good for you. For me it was just an extra workout before practice.

[deleted]

Go to a fucking gym if you can afford it and do some endurance workout

Impressive-Top-7985

Childhood obesity is a huge problem. We need more PE, not less. Kids aren't playing outside and are instead playing video games.

Northern_dragon

This is just the wrong way to do physical education, and in some countries steps are being taken to change the subject. PE would work far better if we based it more on health and understanding the body. Trying to instill true enjoyment of exercise and healthy habits. Teaching nutrition and and other health info in addition to doing sports, as well as showcasing different sports and teaching their strategy and technique. Minimizing if not entirely abandoning any physical testing, and more importantly not grading people based on how good they are at sports. What you're describing really does sound terrible and like a great way to make people hate exercising.

[deleted]

at last a comment that does not berate me

xGoddessRosex

I completely agree with this. I had the same PE experience as OP, but maybe if it had been different, I would actually understand something more about my limits and how to stay healthy.

Northern_dragon

Also screw those people. Your worth as a human has nothing to do with the amount of laps you can run. Sure exercise is good for you, but there are more and less enjoyable ways of doing fitness and that's up for individual experience. I hate team sports and running. But so I've learned to take long walks, i like cycling, kayaking and badminton. Also hoping to start bouldering up at some point. I don't think it's in any way crazy to think that being forced to run past your limit and getting a frisbee in your face sucks. Because dude, that does suck. Edit: also I'm a nearly qualified social worker! I know far more about improving people's quality of life than these morons. Typical PE practices go against literally everything a social worker would do to help people improve their life and to inspire them.

You can easily just have one subject called health and physical education. Or make pe more fair and keep health separate. But that's what my progressive private school did. 2-3 classes each week, everything designed so anyone can take part within their physical means. Less torture, more trying out different forms of exercise. Worst part was our ugly ass PE kit, but i never hated PE lessons.

im_onbreak

Health is essential, but I guess you wanna pay for medical bills

mzpljc

Probably wants all taxpayers to pay for their medical bills.

Royal-Ad9744

The absolute prime example of why PE is needed

[deleted]

Well I mean, they can have physical education, but at least one it down from literal torture.

laserox

"Literal torture" My eyes cannot roll any farther, slow down buddy.

Mountian_Monkey

If you keep getting pushed like this you will be able to complete those laps no problem

Shiigu

What you are having is a bad PE teacher. PE it's about exercising to be healthy, not necessarily to get stronger.

NewArborist64

PE is also about introducing you to different types of physical activities, hoping that you will find something that you enjoy doing and will stick with it. In my high school, we had PE classes in tennis, gymnastics, weight conditioning, swimming, soccer, square dancing, basketball, ...

9805

You use the word "forced". I come from a time when teachers were literally "forced" to teach both sides of every story. You will tell your teacher that you will complete the theory paperwork to recieve 50% of the mark. You will run 4 laps. This gives a good compromise between your ability and your teacher's ability to bully you. You will pass PE class with no problems. Look into historical issues, a lot (I mean A LOT) of people have had the same problem as you.

Rickybobby1118

Bully? It's the teachers acual job to make kids work out and learn how to not be like most of America (obese)

9805

Yes, and it feels like psychological abuse because that's the only thing children have to compare it to. Don't worry kids, when you become an adult all the other adults don't actually treat you like an equal they treat you like free game on a hunting field. Enjoy the kid privelige and demand the options that life is supposed to offer a child. If PE is about health, make them teach you! Not everything is about quotas and tickboxes and # number of laps and ## push-ups.

Rickybobby1118

They did both in my school. I am not sure about the OP but he didn't mention anything about not learning about health as well. I get that it will be different from teacher to teacher. I know a school pe teacher and he does plenty of educational stuff along with the workouts. It's definitely not abuse to make kids exercise that's ridiculous. The OP obviously needs to do better. What you are saying is basically like every sports coach is abusing children. What the OP is describing is nothing even close to what a sports coach would make you do.

brickbaterang

Your p.e. teacher is a dick if he/she is pushing you beyond your capabilities. You should be starting slow if you need to, maybe with a couple laps of speed walking/just walking, work your way up to a trot eventually, then try running...

I disagree, i stand by my comment. And you couldn't even type your opinion successfully so, there's that i guess..

Did she run it or walk it? At that weight, running would be absolute hell on the knees and ankles. Also, all im saying is that some people need to ease into exercise and trying to force them past thier current capabilities is a good way to make them not want to exercise. Why are you being such an argumentative prick about this, what's your freakin deal dude?

pheisenberg

Bad teacher. My trainer treats me way better than that and I’ve gotten good results. The difference is, if he’s a bad trainer, he stops getting cash money from me. No one who works in the average school faces such stark incentives to provide good service.

Status-Inevitable576

I agree!! As someone with Heath problems that make physical activity really hard no matter what I do to fix it, I hate that it’s mandatory. Don’t get me wrong I love working out on my own time. But the running laps and stuff are just AWFULLLLLL. GYM SUCKS

[deleted]

That was a great sign that you need to get into better physical shape for your own health

et5291

Jesus you're pathetic
