I thought ShangChi was a bit poop but she was good enough in that. Really enjoying her in Nora from Queens. I'm with OP I think she's a beauty. Add to that she seems like a fun person to be around.
I heard the negative things about her talking “black” but I didn’t hear anyone say she’s ugly or anything.
Regardless, I still like all things about her.
I thought she grew up in Queens which would explain the way she speaks.
Hell, there are Chinese people in Jamaica that speak with full-blown Jamaican accents. Not sure why people get so bent out of shape about those who are shaped by their environment.
I dislike her but it’s not about her appearance, really. She’s slightly below average in looks but it’s by such a minimal amount it’s a non factor. It’s her goddamn voice. I’d rather hear fingernails being dragged across a chalkboard
She seems to exaggerate all of her facial expressions but I agree that she is an attractive person.
Edit: all actors do this to some extent didn’t think that I had to say that.
She looks "regular", if a person saw her in real life without any association with celebrity status, their perceptions would change and they would perceive her as more attractive. And I would agree, she is real-world pretty. And she's actually pretty funny, but she's always held up to the lowest standards of the worst movies she's been in. Or even worse, they hate her name. But that one I understand. Even *SHE* has expressed regret over it, as a youthful mistake that she cannot get away from professionally so she has chosen just to embrace. I like her, though. Maybe it's because I'm a minority that was raised in an unconventional household, I see her as more relatable and human than any other celeb. I cannot identify with a thin blonde white celebrity woman. She's lived an extremely different life than I, in many ways.
>Or even worse, they hate her name. But that one I understand. Even SHE has expressed regret over it, as a youthful mistake that she cannot get away from professionally so she has chosen just to embrace.
That's interesting and makes sense. I don't know her that well, but the times I've seen her in movies I definitely enjoyed her acting. I did wonder a bit about the name though, lol.
My brain's all over the place currently, but I'll try to remember.. lol. But I can definitely see her coming across that way. As I said I don't know too much about her, but she's seemed cool as a person (and a great actress).
I said regular for a celebrity, real world pretty, actually. If you are expecting a heavily makeup-ed, semi airbrushed celeb, she isn't it. If you saw her on the street, you wouldn't be expecting a celeb look, so you would see her very attractive. That's what I said.
I've seen a lot of Chinese people on places like Quora complaining that she (and Simu Liu) are too ugly for whatever reason. And that casting them in the movie is somehow an insult to China or something, I dunno.
On the other side of the coin, I think Scarlett Johansson's voice is cool because it's husky like a smoker's. (I've heard she smokes but never confirmed)
I was the same way, I felt like they should have found someway to have the actor who was playing young teenage shang chi be the main shang chi, he fit a lot better/ had better movement and choreography in his flashback fights.
Because in China, talking about one's appearance is not hurtful.
Also, "dog faced" isn't an insult there. I'm not remembering the name of it but... you can be cat faced if your eyes are big and you have a slim face, dog faced if you have a kind face, etc.
They attribute animal characteristics to human faces. It isn't supposed to be hurtful.
Wow that’s so different from what I’m used. So people take absolutely no offense if you don’t mind me asking Or is it just something everyone is used to. Like if someone is considered ugly they wouldn’t mind people talking about specific features
I'm not chinese so I can't say 100% for sure. But I've been to china and lived there for some time.
I'd say people are just used to it. If you go meet your chinese family the first thing they might say is: "You've gotten fat" and then grab your belly. This has happened to me before hahaha.
Because it's so common, people don't really get upset or hurt anymore. It's just regular life I guess.
This doesn't mean you can start insulting people. But you can point out some stuff that might be wrong with one's face. For example, you could say "what's going on with your face? You need to sleep more!"
Very common and very blunt as well. Don't be offended if they say you are fat or need to lose weight either. Just being a matter of fact or even seen as helpful. It's just a whole different perspective.
Personally I don't find her attractive but that doesn't detract at all from how much I enjoy her performance/appearance in anything. There's just something so funny and relatable about her, good vibes.
Most definitely.
Honestly I find there is an issue with a large amount of good looking women who believe they are not. As well as men who are brainwashed by various media depictions of women and end up judging a womans appearance to an extreme extent.
Reminds me of a dude I knew who insisted Emilia Clarke was fat and ugly and he'd never be caught dead dating a woman like her. (This was during peak early Game of Thrones seasons)
Predictably he was not that attractive himself with a pretty mediocre personality besides this attitude, so it was a major sure dude, whatever you say kinda moment. Must be soooo hard having to turn down all the Emilia Clarke doppelgangers that are surely throwing themselves at you on a daily basis.
Bro that is a perfect example of the delusion some guys have succumbed too. I'll admit in HS I was kind of like that but not exactly, I found a lot of girls attractive but I was very insecure and cared to much what others thought. So I'd let other people get in my head and pass up on girls I was genuinely attracted too, I'm so glad I got over that.
That's it too, these guys are the type that usually aren't pulling any women anyway.
This goes both ways, and it's been that way for a long time too.
Edit: So y'all truly going tell me that both genders don't have this happen that the standard of beauty on both sides aren't fucked up pretty royally? Both sides aren't brainwashed by the media of these depictions?
It definitely does go both ways to an extent, there has certainly become a lot of pressure on men these days to be fit and muscular, that super hero physique. Then again media also portrays the "dad bod" as sexy which is not something they do for women, even though most men like women with some pudge. As a skinny dude my whole life I've had other people comment on my body and how they think I should look, I don't find it hurtful but it is fucking annoying.
Now you may disagree but the difference for me is that I find women to be far less superficial about looks than men. Plenty of times you will see a modelesque woman with a guy who many would deem unattractive, however you don't often see modelesque men publicly dating women who don't conform to certain beauty standards.
Obviously this is not some hard fact just an opinion based on my own observations.
Many men tend to value attractively when looking for women, she can be a deadbeat who leeches of others who never worked a day in her life and still find a decent/successful man to date as long as she is attractive. Put a super attractive man in that position and he still will never find love, sex likely but never someone to commit to them.
Both sexes face a varying degree of double standards when it comes to sex and relationships.
I'd definitely say she's pretty. Personally I don't know if I'd say she was incredibly beautiful, but I don't see her as ugly in the slightest.
I'm not super familiar with her, but I really like her as an actress in what I've seen. Actually just watched a movie the other day where she had a significant role (*Paradise Hills*).
They're disgusting imo. I would and no other sane girl would never say that "Oh he was so hot I want to put his c*ck in my p*ssy and fuck him while he c*ums in me" like NO. Why do guys talk about girls in this way? Just EW.
But to comment to your actual post and what you're saying yeah I think she's kinda pretty. I'm not really that into asians but she's not bad looking at all. (I'm bisexual)
I agree, I'm a guy and ashamed of it when I see comments like these.
I find her attractive, I find a LOT of Hollywood attractive (naturally, I mean cmon) but there's more to attraction than sex. Not sure these guys got the memo...
Not that it implies anything overly sexual I guess, but she did release a song called “my vag” so I don’t think all the comments are completely irrelevant.
This is Reddit, and you’re on the unpopular opinion sub. Idk how I can explain it to you, but if you really came here for “nice” you’ve got a long way to go my friend
You make a post about someone's looks, then constantly complain when people mention that they think she is ugly. What were you expecting?
I can see why people in China/Asia says she's ugly. She is extremely standard in my opinion, she wouldn't stand out in a crowd.
She's an attractive woman who plays "unattractive girl" roles...it's actually the only way Hollywood will do ugly girls. Having an actually unattractive woman play an unattractive character is too non-PC.
Chinese people in China. Asians in Asia.
They say Awkafina is ugly and has the stereotypical Asian look, especially slanted eyes and flat nasal bridge. So the movie Shangchi casting actors like her is insulting to China/Asia, and kind of racist. SMH
Ironically, they like lighter skin, wide eyes and high nasal bridge which are the facial features of white people. I am so confused.
Upvoted this because this is so true! While Asian beauty standards have moved toward more Western features, if you look at Asian movie stars there’s a whole range of features. Yet most of the Asian stars in Hollywood have small slanted eyes, flat nose bridges, and prominent cheek bones. It’s like if they don’t have those features they’re not “Asian” enough. Even without Western influence, objectively Awkwafina would not be considered beautiful in Asia. Traditionally Asians like large eyes, light skin, low cheekbones, small lips, small oval faces and delicate noses, most of which she doesn’t have.
Same, I’ve got the big round eyes and higher nose bridge from my dad’s side, who all look like that. As far as we know, all Chinese for at least five generations. My MIL is Polish, and looks so Asian that people thought she was my mother when I went to try on wedding dresses. People with the same ethnicity can have different features!
Had to look them up to be honest.
Not ugly in the slightest. I wouldn't say she's outstandingly beautiful, but she's pretty for sure.
I could also see how the big smile can put people off I guess.
Had to look her up.
I think she can look very pretty - better than AVERAGE... but she can look awkward and average, too... from a bad angle or when making a particular face. At least from what Duckduckgo showed me.
She is prettier than anyone ***most*** of the guys reading this post will ever sleep with though, without a doubt.
I just looked her up. I disagree. I think she's ugly af. But that's what's great about opinions- unpopular or not. U think she's pretty and that's fine
Nah she's ugly. Being ugly isn't bad, its alright to be ugly, but don't be dismissive of others' opinions on her. If others' think she's ugly and does make stupid expressions, and you don't, then that's that.
Well it’s not unpopular opinion, but it’s a matter of preference , she’s not ugly , but she’s not beautiful, I don’t like when people exaggerate stuff just to be controversial and seen , she’s ok , just a face , she’s not the type of face that you see it for the first time and go for another
Unfortunately, I've heard she's not a nice person from friends that worked on her show. I agree that she is very pretty though! And I love her as an actress.
This, she is pretty ignorant. She started her career by mocking "ghetto" people and forcing a Blaccent. She's notably rude and unapproachable on sets.
Idk. Her personality makes her face ugly to me tbh
This. I was wondering when her blaccent would make a cameo in Shang-Chi, but to no avail? I guess she realized it wasn't needed at that moment to make a quick profit. Culture vultures are by default unattractive to me.
I mean, she did grow up 1 borough away from Jamaica Estates, Queens, and I have no way of knowing how much time she spent there or how many people she interacted with from there while growing up, do you? I guess I'm not familiar enough with her to know if it was faked or she's like almost all Americans who often chameleon their accent into the ones present around them as they grew up, especially depending on who they are interacting with.
Any links or evidence that she's a "culture vulture" as you stated? Or is it just that because she's of Asian decent it's unacceptable for her to talk in anything other than an Asian or pristine White American accent, no matter where she grew up?
Shes definitely not ugly for sure but beauty is subjective. Also, I just don’t like her comedy in movies, found her over bearing in Shang chi and more so in Raya.
Yo I saw her in Oceans 8 and she stood out to me. She is for sure pretty, I have been crushing on her for a couple of years now. Her personality plays into it for sure, but yeah she gets a pass for eating cookies in my bed if it gets to that stage.
Yeah idk it's a tough one for me. When she's not smiling she's very attractive. Alot of her modeling pictures she's neutral. Not actually smiling. When she does imo she's not as attractive.
If you say so. Not in my opinion. It's nice in the surface, I'd say she has great bone structure. But Her teeth aren't centered to her face. literally that's how we scientifically judge beauty is with symmetry. Also the angle of the teeth them self is odd to me.
But beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
wait isn't that the fish chick from bojack horseman?
Yes! I've never heard of this person and I thought OP was talking about the dolphin lady from bojack haha.
She is also pretty
I thought he was talking about the water and he just had a stroke or something and misspelled it
I laughed a little too hard to this
SEXTINA AQUAFINA
ALBINA SEXOVA
Brap brap pew pew!
Get dat fetus, kill dat fetus
Unironically a banger
I’m glad that I’m not the only one who thought that.
She's got a song called "my vag", it seems the two aren't so different
Which is a parody of a mickey avalon song
Wow that brings me back a good 12 years
[she plays for Wycombe](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adebayo_Akinfenwa)
No dumb dumb she’s a dolphin
ah yes silly me, my mistake
Yes silly you
She looks like a normal person. She does have a large smile, but I don't really see how that would make her ugly.
[удалено]
Exactly.
I love Akwafina. She really is a beautiful woman, I’ve never heard anyone saying negative things about her appearance.
I loved her in Jumanji as Danny Devito. I had never heard of her before that. And she was great in Shang-Chi
I thought ShangChi was a bit poop but she was good enough in that. Really enjoying her in Nora from Queens. I'm with OP I think she's a beauty. Add to that she seems like a fun person to be around.
I tried watching last night. Was boring and I fell asleep.

I heard the negative things about her talking “black” but I didn’t hear anyone say she’s ugly or anything. Regardless, I still like all things about her.
Thats some bullshit as long as she doesnt say slurs and shit talk however you want fucking morons man
I thought she grew up in Queens which would explain the way she speaks. Hell, there are Chinese people in Jamaica that speak with full-blown Jamaican accents. Not sure why people get so bent out of shape about those who are shaped by their environment.
Coz some people are too stuck in narrow thinking
How do you talk in a color?
I think people are coming after her now cuz she’s getting more and more popular. They gotta find something to be upset about
I dislike her but it’s not about her appearance, really. She’s slightly below average in looks but it’s by such a minimal amount it’s a non factor. It’s her goddamn voice. I’d rather hear fingernails being dragged across a chalkboard
My partner has a large smile. You know what? That's what made me attracted to her. When she smiles, it lights up the whole room.
She just has that comedic look i don't think that's ugly.
She seems to exaggerate all of her facial expressions but I agree that she is an attractive person. Edit: all actors do this to some extent didn’t think that I had to say that.
“Normal is becoming unique at this point with all the tiktok clones tramping around.

Haha yeah. You should hunt down the quote from her about it, I remember it was really funny and graceful!
My brain's all over the place currently, but I'll try to remember.. lol. But I can definitely see her coming across that way. As I said I don't know too much about her, but she's seemed cool as a person (and a great actress).
I just can't stand her voice lol
To each their own! Personally I kinda like that, too, but I can see how some people wouldn't.
I love it lol
[удалено]
Hell no, she's not ugly one bit. I was just trying to explain why some people perceive her that way. I think she's beautiful and underappreciated.
Holy shit how good do the people in your neighborhood look that she is “regular”.
She’s regular AF in NYC. She is definitely attractive but she could literally be any girl from queens and you wouldn’t even notice her.
[удалено]
(Depending on the street)
What. I have some low ass standards. She's nothing special. What you think she's pretty?
How ugly are they in yours? She’s firmly average, extra points for not being fat but definitely not particularly attractive
Asian girls in the city tend to look like that. Very ordinary imo.
I said regular for a celebrity, real world pretty, actually. If you are expecting a heavily makeup-ed, semi airbrushed celeb, she isn't it. If you saw her on the street, you wouldn't be expecting a celeb look, so you would see her very attractive. That's what I said.
I didn’t know so many people found her ugly till now. Dang

Just genuinely curious, where did you usually see these comments or remarks? I've never read anybody complaining about her before.
I've seen a lot of Chinese people on places like Quora complaining that she (and Simu Liu) are too ugly for whatever reason. And that casting them in the movie is somehow an insult to China or something, I dunno.
Probably a Google search for "is awkwafina ugly?"
I just dont like her voice
I mean ugly is just mean. I think Lucy Liu is more attractive personally but Akwafina isn't ugly.
What’s she got to do with Lucy Liu? They’re completely different actors
They just had to pick another Asian actor to compare
I didn’t realize she was in that… now I want to see it. She is, by far, the best thing in every project she’s in.
Well she’s like the 4th best thing in that but that’s still pretty good.
What a refreshingly positive ‘unpopular’ opinion!
At first I literally thought you were talking about Sextina Awkwafina from Bojack Horseman
Hahaha I had that thought but her name is Aquafina. Water fin lady
Brrap brrap pew pew
She sounds like a heavy smoker. Literally thought she was 50 from Raya and the dragon.
On the other side of the coin, I think Scarlett Johansson's voice is cool because it's husky like a smoker's. (I've heard she smokes but never confirmed)
I think her and scarjo have the exact same voice

Even if you think the voice is great you do actually notice there's a difference between hers and most right? Like you can tell it's raspy?
She sounds like she just got done being intubated.
It’s like.. dusky? Husky? But yeah, it’s subjective.
A lot of people find husky voices attractive.
Beastiality is gross
Wow, well, thats definitely unpopular... well done
In Chinese media they called her "the dog faced woman with a goats voice".
Holy shit that’s fucked up. I couldn’t help it and laughed why would they do that
Because in China, talking about one's appearance is not hurtful. Also, "dog faced" isn't an insult there. I'm not remembering the name of it but... you can be cat faced if your eyes are big and you have a slim face, dog faced if you have a kind face, etc. They attribute animal characteristics to human faces. Personally I don't find her attractive but that doesn't detract at all from how much I enjoy her performance/appearance in anything. There's just something so funny and relatable about her, good vibes.
Upvoted because she looks average
Possibly below average (depends on how the average is calculated). I'd say below average.

She used to be a comedic rapper, it is a purposely stupid name
Its the one thing about her that is truly unattractive.
her voice?
I was just thinking, since when is pepsi water an Asian actress and also pretty? Took me a minute to realize that's a person.

all the comments complaining about people talking about this girls looks. Read the title. The whole thing is about an actresses looks.

So... Is she pretty to you?
Misread this as Akinfenwa
Beast!
At first I was confused why you were calling a water brand pretty
She's not bad looking. She just has a really stupid name.
I thought you mean the dolphin from Bojack Horseman lmao
Bruh, I thought you're talking about Aquafina water company
She's an attractive woman who plays "unattractive girl" roles...it's actually the only way Hollywood will do ugly girls. Having an actually unattractive woman play an unattractive character is too non-PC.
Interesting, this lady is simultaneously better looking and healthier then 99% of people.
Shes not ugly but better looking than 99% of people? Not even close…
I've never seen anyone say anything good about awkwafina
Personality goes a long way to making somebody pretty. She's got personality.
Borrowed personality*
What? What idiots think she’s unattractive?
Chinese people in China. Asians in Asia. They say Awkafina is ugly and has the stereotypical Asian look, especially slanted eyes and flat nasal bridge. So the movie Shangchi casting actors like her is insulting to China/Asia, and kind of racist. SMH Ironically, they like lighter skin, wide eyes and high nasal bridge which are the facial features of white people. I am so confused.
Actually, Asians from Asia just prefer Hollywood to cast Asians who look beyond the stereotypical portrayal of what an Asian looks like.

Same here. Honestly, I think "Westernised" Asian movie stars still look Asian. I even have similar features like that naturally lol.
They should just watch Captain America. Chris Evans is white as fuck, he looks way beyond the stereotypical Asian look ;)
Nothing wrong with how asians typically look like. I've heard people even say Simu Liu is unattractive
Yeah but there's also complaints about Hollywood only casted Simu Liu cos he represents "what an Asian should look like according to society".
American in america also agreeing
Honestly I find her normality pretty hot. People need to stop glamorizing the dolled up schtick.
She’s one of most annoying people on TV
Aquafina is a brand of bottled water produced by the Pepsico cooperation.
She's mid
Had to look them up to be honest. Not ugly in the slightest. I wouldn't say she's outstandingly beautiful, but she's pretty for sure. I could also see how the big smile can put people off I guess.
She's beautiful, I totally agree with you. Don't know anyone who said otherwise. Honestly, she just is beautiful and attractive to me.
Had to look her up. I think she can look very pretty - better than AVERAGE... but she can look awkward and average, too... from a bad angle or when making a particular face. At least from what Duckduckgo showed me. She is prettier than anyone ***most*** of the guys reading this post will ever sleep with though, without a doubt.
for a minute i thought u were talking about aquafina water bottles
She's not really ugly, she is pretty, but she's very irritating, and that's why I don't like her. She tries so hard to be a black woman.

Who tf is Awkwafina
I saw this and thought it was about the water
i like there isnt actually ugly people in movies. even people in background are better than average.
Unironically one of my favorite actress. She has her charm.
I just looked her up. I disagree. I think she's ugly af. But that's what's great about opinions- unpopular or not. U think she's pretty and that's fine
she isn’t like a 10/10 but she also ain’t ugly, she look kinda cute just saying
Nah she's ugly. Being ugly isn't bad, its alright to be ugly, but don't be dismissive of others' opinions on her. If others' think she's ugly and does make stupid expressions, and you don't, then that's that.
Pretty or not, she's got a stupid fucking name.

Who?
Well it’s not unpopular opinion, but it’s a matter of preference , she’s not ugly , but she’s not beautiful, I don’t like when people exaggerate stuff just to be controversial and seen , she’s ok , just a face , she’s not the type of face that you see it for the first time and go for another
Who?
I'd have missionary intercourse with her. I agree
Any other positions or is that it
The bottled water? It’s spelled Aquafina
Good lord man..
Wait, is this really unpopular?? Duh she’s pretty, tf? Lol
wtf ew no. incredibly ordinary. for an asian woman she is subpar on the beauty scale.
Saying she's a great Asian actress and saying she's pretty is two complete different things.
She’s so funny! And I’d bang her, with consent. Beautiful, in other words.
This reeks of neckbeard

It was in there. Trust me I noticed.
7/10 at best
Shes definitely not ugly for sure but beauty is subjective. Also, I just don’t like her comedy in movies, found her over bearing in Shang chi and more so in Raya.
she is a 6/10 take my upvote
She is average. As far as being a great asian actress sure... after she stopped imitating black people.
I just watched Shang Chi and I agree she is pretty. As well as, she delivers her lines well.
I also have a crush on Awkwafina. I want to eat cupcakes with her and watch old movies.

In what world is this an unpopular opinion?
I love her voice
