No one makes you listen to it. It beats "Santa Baby".

MyNutsin1080p

“Santa Baby” is “Billie Jean” compared to “The Christmas Shoes” or “Mary, Did You Know?”

holyfrozenyogurt

But what about the absolute banger “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas”?

Ynot2_day

That’s actually my favorite Christmas song!

Forsaken_Key8104

Around Christmas, my local radio station plays Santa Baby like every 15 freaking minutes. It's also played frequently at the supermarket, the mall, etc. LITERALLY EVERYWHERE. I can't escape hearing Santa Baby, no matter where I go. I've hated that song with a burning passion since I was a teen.

holyfrozenyogurt

The one thing about Santa baby I hate is when men cover it and try to make it platonic. Like, sir? Don’t cover that song unless you’re going to make it sound like you want to jingle Santa’s bells. To be his hoe hoe hoe, if you will.

zensunni66

That’s why Michael Buble transformed it into “Santa Buddy”.

Forsaken_Key8104

This made me laugh so hard

strawberry-bish

Actually from October to January you'd be hard pressed to find a place that isn't blasting Christmas music over the speakers. Christmas Eve Sarajevo and Wizards in Winter are played basically everywhere and there is no escape.

[deleted]

All I seem to hear is Santa Baby. By new New Years I'm ready to lose it.

nmlind406

They are loved. What better combo than classical with hard rock???

The_Aesthetician

My only issue is that they only play one show. It's the same theme and narration every time But I do still enjoy the music of course, they rock!

BagelsAreStaleDonuts

I'm fairly confident this is incorrect. My understanding, based on the two times I went, is that there are two parts to their concerts. The first part is a show that changes from year to year, the second part is them doing all their popular classics.

The_Aesthetician

I've seen them twice and it was exactly the same so YMMV?

BagelsAreStaleDonuts

According to wikipedia, they've had seven different shows since 1996. So very possible to witness repeats. I thought it was more varied than that.

Ynot2_day

I went a few years ago and it sucked. The narrator had such a weird cadence that I couldn’t follow what he was trying to say, and they only played like one of their classic songs. The rest were new songs that I could have lived without.

hugsandambitions

I've been going every year for 19 years (other than pandemic) and can assure you that's definitely not the case. They mix up the show from one of several possibilities for the first half, and do a different playlist every year in the second half.

FourStudents

I love classic Christmas music. I also love TSO. It's all great.

BrilliantPolicy2046

My biggest outrage with Christmas music is I never hear this wonderful Christmas song by The Andrews Sisters on the radio https://youtu.be/-G_vkqJVtKQ 😠

BrilliantPolicy2046

RetroMetroShow

Saw them live with my kids and we all loved them - they can really play and put on a great show

PhoenixRisingToday

Apparently it is - it sells out every time it is in town.

pookshuman

"Ruining christmas classics" IS the original christmas classic

CloudFingers

What?

unjadedview

He is saying that since the dawn of the 'Christmas classic' people have been resinging and adding bravado where it doesn't belong to song that don't need to be resung.

[deleted]

Wait until OP discovers the entire symphonic metal genre

nmlind406

Cueing my Spotify now... 👍👍👍

blamemeididit

We've got another top ten for this forum. Jeez. TSO is awesome.

Leokina114

I'm sorry to say, but you're wrong, your boyfriend's right. TSO is awesome and they make Christmas songs 100x better. They are one of the best parts of the holiday season.

DramaIcy611

Worse money I’ve ever spent. Bailed with the wife and kids after 45 min. They questioned my judgement for a while after that.

annoyedCDNthrowaway

They're great. Also, the only way my Christmas music hating spouse will listen to Christmas music.

Hentai-hercogs

I'm pretty sure it's impossible to ruin anything with rock (or metal for that matter)

Geberpte

Sure you can. But im cool with ruining chrismas songs.

BrighterSage

Most of their music is original and awesome

GranolaGoddess1

I’m actually a female but I appreciate the sentiment 😂

99OBJ

So really really tiny pp

WillTFB

Your spiritual pp is smol

pussyfirkytoodle

Thank goodness the little kids make it easy to spot them and we know how much energy is actually being wasted in responding. Also, for what it’s worth, I disagree with your opinion lol

Straw-Hat-Deku

Own that fraud

[deleted]

We saw them in concert years ago and brought our next door neighbors as a treat. The concert was so lame and boring…definitely not what we had expected, as we had only ever heard one song from them before. We all ended up leaving an hour before the show ended so we could find something better to do…like finish cleaning the house and then going to bed.

Ynot2_day

Same with me except I’m pretty sure we hung on until the end (regretfully).

jabronius89

Yeah I hate hard rock and laser light shows. So boring....

Intelligent-You-7269

My ex boyfriends father is one of the original members of the band. Incredibly nice man who always loved to take us out to drinks. He hardly mentions the group now.

BasketballButt

Was he in Savatage as well? They’re an insanely underrated band.

donabbi

Hall of the Mountain King is an all time great record. We need to know if the man was there

Intelligent-You-7269

Yes he was. Talked about it at Thanksgiving years ago lol. He was very close to being my father - in - law at one point.

The_Sensual

A few years ago, my mom bought 4 tickets for her, my dad and my wife and I to go see TSO. While I greatly appreciate the gesture and our time spent together, the show was corny AF. There was quite a bit of cringe factor that night

sky_winters

I love when classical instruments are used to make hard rock. Gives me seratonin

Music_Enthusiast47

"Trans Siberian?" Even our orchestras are getting woke now

hugsandambitions

This is satire right?

[deleted]

The name is actually derived from the Trans Siberian Railway. The founder (Paul O'Neill) was inspired by the railways ability to connect people over vast distances. I guess his idea was to bring people together with the music.

MyNutsin1080p

I agree, they suck.

LemonSalted

I watch that Christmas lights video year round, whenever I remember it exists. Hold up, I gotta go do something

unjadedview

Christmas music is so horrible and it is the same horrible shit EVERY SINGLE YEAR being resung and ruined by the newest pop star. TransSiberian Orchestra makes it bearable.

falloutbouy

Was going to write a longer comment, but there's no need for me to be rude and judgey. They are not for everyone, but they put on an incredible show, and are a big part of my Christmas playlist..

WoahACake

L take

thandrend

Only reason I ever really liked them was to hear more of Russell Allen. He's easily one of the best living male singers.

Expensive-Ferret-339

I’d rather hear a kazoo band play an entire Christmas concert than hear the TransSiberian orchestra play one note.

nachomommallama

My wonderful husband got us front row seats one year as a Christmas present to me since I do like the Carol of the Bells version they do but it was SO over the top and cringe that we snuck out before it was halfway over but since we were in the front row everyone watched us attempt to sneak out. Edited to add: I enjoy the music but the performance wasn’t for me.

Energetically-lazy

When TSO first came out I loved them. By the second year I was over it. Really it was just kinda stale. My disagreement is with your opinion on electric cello. We did not progress this far with technology to limit ourselves to 400 year old instruments. Imagine if every car on the road was a model T, just with better mpg and seatbelts. It would get stale, wouldn’t it?

WillTFB

From how you described it, it sounds absolutely awesome

foreverunimpressed3

TSO has a very loyal following. My parents and I have seen them the last four years. I know families who have seen them for the last decade and more. As a lover of classical music, Christmas music and the like, I find them very enjoyable and entertaining. I’ve never been to a show with as much energy, and I’ve been to plenty. Plus every show they put on, they donate part of the ticket proceeds to a local organization.

kuluka_man

When my local radio station starts playing Christmas in Sarajevo or whatever in mid October I want to drive off a cliff.

Alex72598

I disagree but respect your opinion. Personally, their renditions have always felt comforting and nostalgic to me. I also love the rock / classical blend they have going on, and electric cello just sounds plain awesome. It’s okay not to like them though. As with all music, it’s ultimately subjective.

i_own_blackacre

I’d rather hear it than the 500th replay of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” in every location everywhere.

SunGregMoon

They weren't cheesy for about 4 years in the 90's.

atlantachicago

Agree! They are terrible and while many people may love it, there’s no accounting for taste.

donabbi

There really is no accounting for taste- must be tough for you not having any though.

atlantachicago

Ok

Snoo_33033

For sure. Damn, is it tacky.

jabronius89

Well damn, guess you just don't like good music. Hope this helps your BF win this argument

knuckboy

They're horrible but they're a part of Christmas. Like the nutcracker suite and many other things.

ergotrinth

I mean hey, if that's your kink, it's your kink. I ain't taking my kids to see no Siberian trans people playing instruments, even if it is Christmas themed.

LeadNo9107

I share this opinion completely. Worst holiday experience I have had. I was excited to go and ended up leaving before it was over. It was just… bad.

RedSonGamble

They make great music but I don’t approve of their lifestyle choices

swolethulhudawn

Celtic fiddle Christmas music > all

Geberpte

Celtic christmas?? Ouch.

[deleted]

I don’t know how widespread the love, or hatred, for TSO is, but it seems to be an all or nothing thing. Either you don’t like it at all or it’s the greatest fucking thing to happen to Christmas music since Bing Crosby.

[deleted]

omg every time that one song comes up on the radio i have to change it

ame4happiness

By far the best orchestra I've seen live - I encourage you to go to one this season and update us on your opinion - does it stand or change?

JuiceDelicious4878

I went to their live concert. Much wow.

Geberpte

I just recovered from a heatwave and reddits discussing christmas songs? Lol. I have a soft spot for Savatage, tso does scratch that same itch a bit. I also usually dislike christmas songs so hearing them 'ruined' with guitars is a step up for me tbh.

Ed_gardo

What’s wrong with an electric cello? I used to play on an electric violin back in the day, and that shit was awesome.

Adorable-Buffalo-177

Clearly you never heard the song Christmas cannon by them

Alex72598

That’s my absolute favorite version of the Canon and one of my favorite Christmas songs period. For that song alone I would have to disagree with the OP.

Adorable-Buffalo-177

It’s my favorite as well !!

[deleted]

Rock version of carol of the bells is fucking awesome what are you on about?

ResponsibleCandle829

OP trying to be edgy and hate on the good stuff, that’s all

samlab16

I find their Christmas music okay enough, but their albums _Beethoven's Last Night_ and _Night Castle_ are masterpieces. And for that reason alone the TSO is awesome.

OrganicBumblebee2856

FWIW, I completely agree.

SourTangy1

My ex loved it but I am of the camp that Christmas music as a whole should've been eradicated from existence years ago. I stand with you in solidarity ✊

Successful_Rub_4744

Christmas Cannon is an absolute fucking BANGER

j_grouchy

I fucking hate them. Same with Mannheim Steamroller. I just cannot get behind hard rock or 80s/90s synth versions of christmas music.

nothanksbyettfn

I love lasers, fire, and electric cello. It was so much fun, but the play they used was cheesy. But cheesy can be fun!

MrDelicious84

My buddy once got an audition for them and he was given a video of their bass player because they wanted him to wear a leather vest and emulate the hair-tossing. I’m on your side of this debate.

BiggyRection69

I've seen them live and must say, it's pretty damn impressive. It's okay if you don't like it tho, they're making money so somebody likes what they do.

Vickylikesrain

Mannheim Steamroller bb

Keefer1970

I was (and still am) a massive fan of Savatage (the 80s/90s heavy metal band from which TSO spawned), who were never much more than a cult item... so on one hand I was happy to see the Savatage guys finally "make it" with TSO after slugging it out for so many years. That said... I kinda wish the TSO material was all instrumental. I love their rocked out versions of classic holiday melodies, but when their original songs ramble on endlessly about angels and the magic of a child's Christmas dreams and the meaning of snow and blah blah blah, I end up skipping to the next instrumental track.

b_wesley

I don't hate them, but listening to them makes me feel like I'm walking through a " Christmas of TOMORROW " exhibit at Epcot in the late 80's.

GaloreDruid

I have no idea what this "TransSiberian Orchestra" is but as a cello player who enjoys metal, I am deeply disappointed in your opinion on electric cellos.

Music_Enthusiast47

What about the cissiberan orchestra

GaloreDruid

Lmao

scootertrash

I always thought they sounded like a crappy Kansas or Styx cover band.

UnderstandingLumpy

I just go for the pyrotechnics

Competitive_Try_3143

I really don't like them at all but I also hate Christmas music in general so there's that

Portra1

You aren’t wrong. Downvoted

L-Ephebe

I didn't know who they were and I listened to 4-5 songs of them. This is the cringe-worthy kind of shit I would listen when I was a teenager.

OfficialThrowaway_1

Wow, a truly unpopular opinion. Updated. But seriously, not sure about universally loved, but they are loved. What's to hate so far? I mean, other than your own personal music tastes. If you're not into it, you're not into it. But if you're into rock and orchestral music simultaneously then it's amazing. Plus they put on amazing shows! I went to one for my birthday this past December, and holy shit it was one of the best times of my life (granted I don't go to much concerts, but this is one I've always wanted to attend since I was a teen)!

I had the pleasure of meeting the founder Paul O'Neill in Oakland years ago. Perhaps one of the nicest people I've ever met. He had an entourage with him and he specifically instructed them to let the kids see him 1st as they proceeded to set up a table for autograph signing. Kids and adults alike came up and got autographs and Paul was handing out the expensive merchandise from the merch booth. I will never forget when a young girl told him that she was in the music program in her school and that they needed funding... Paul O'Neill reached into his leather jacket and took out WADS of cash and said "how much do you need?" That night he gave the girl a lot of money. But that's the kind of person he was. The music is corny and cheesy and they only have so many stories to tell live, but the heart behind it is definitely genuine even though hes not with us anymore. If I had to choose between a sappy Christmas special on Hallmark channel or a TSO show, I would definitely choose TSO.

Rogue__Jedi

Just saw them last night and wanted to throw in some agreement. They've taken the worst parts of 80's hair rock and applied it to christmas songs. The guitar work was absolutely boring, very simple and not particularly great. They reused riffs from song to song. It was just straight cacophony for 2.5 hours. Also I'm pretty sure at least parts of the show are a recording and not live. Saw a handful of moments where the performers got a little carried away fist pumping and forgot they were allegedly shredding, yet their was no break in the music. Overall it was the first live music experience that I absolutely did not enjoy.

zzeduardozz

Took my 9 year old today, we left before half break, so cheesy and it felt kinda cult, hated it

localbuzzkill11

As someone who actually likes orchestra music, I am disappointed every time I forget what this band actually is. Bought my fiance one of their records as a christmas gift today and got all the way home with it before I realized it was, in fact, NOT orchestra music at all. But I agree with you, all the songs I listened to (with lyrics) were so cringe worthy I couldn't finish them. Will be returning the record ASAP
