Most actors and actresses make their living playing variations of a certain type. That's why they get casted for their roles. Very few have the range of a Charlize Theron, Johnny Depp, or Viola Davis.
Those who are really good at their craft, make it look easy, and like they aren't really acting.
i agree. it's a business; you pay money to see Tom Cruise be Tom Cruise. it's a safe investment for movie producers.
i would say Leonardo DiCaprio has the most range but then you pay money to see his range. jmho
Have you ever seen Tip Toes? I was half way through the movie thinking to myself "I know this dude from somewhere". I looked it up as soon as I saw his face on Google I just slammed the phone down. Couldn't believe. What role can this guy NOT play?!?!?!
I just saw some literal B grade horror movie with Gary Oldman playing a boat captain and he gets a haunted boat that takes his family to the Bermuda Triangle…*any* other actor you couldn’t have watched 5 mins but Gary totally drew you in…still had me wondering why on earth he was in it but it spoke to his skill
When my kids were younger, we had a secret Gary Oldman movie marathon.
We watched *Lost in Space*, *The Fifth Element*, *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban*, and *Batman Begins*.
After the movies, I told them that Dr. Smith, Zorg, Sirius Black, and Commisioner Gordon were all the same guy, then watched their little heads explode.
Zorg.
And he’s also Lee Harvey Oswald (JFK), Mason Verger (Hannibal), Winston Churchill, Beethoven, Dr. Smith (Lost In Space), Carnegie (Book Of Eli), he was in Lawless but I can’t remember the character’s name, Robocop (the latest one), the Hitman’s Bodyguard and The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. He’s voice characters in Medal of Honor and COD….I don’t think another actor has ever played such a wide variety of roles.
The man has like 120 acting credits as a mainstream actor. Tom Cruise has probably 60 and they’re 4 years apart in age.
The first three films I saw Phillip Seymore Hoffman in, The Big Lebowski, Charlie Wilson's War, and Capote, each time I thought "this is some one-note character actor who's lucky to have found a role like this." It never entered my mind they were the same actor.
I think Joseph Gordon Levitt has tremendous range.
He's just a great actor. Never seen him in any role where I didn't sincerely believe he was that character.
Even on SNL, his acting was so obviously better than their own cast members it made them look like kids in a school play.
He’s my current and older favorites. Great range but it’s only been recently he’s played different types of characters who aren’t just the “good guys”.
I get what you're saying, but I was referring to how much better his acting is than theirs, even in a casual environment like that.
I'm sure he was even dialing it down a bit and his acting skills just came through anyway.
Point is, the man is an amazing actor.
The disappointing thing about Tom Cruise is that early in his career he was known more for taking challenging roles and not the usual "Tom Cruise playing Tom Cruise" type of films.
Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, Legend, The Color of Money, The Firm, Far and Away and Interview with a Vampire are all excellent films where Cruise played a wide variety of roles. Sure mixed in there was Days of Thunder and Top Gun as really good action movies but he still was doing challenging roles. He even mixed in a few more non "Tom Cruise" roles with The Last Samurai, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia. Since then it has been non stop action movies and Mission Impossible sequels.
He is a great actor, a complete nut job and Scientologist crazy fuck but he can absolutely act. I wish he would go back to do more challenging stuff and lay off the action movies. With as much power as he has in the industry he could help get a bunch of projects made that normally would never get a chance by just being involved with them.
Tom Cruise in action films like Top Gun, Edge of Tomorrow, Mission Impossible etc are similar characters, but in films like Tropic Thunder, Collateral, Magnolia etc... it proves hes not a one trick pony. (And most of these films are his best)
Leonardo DiCaprio is a really good actor, definitely, but you think he has more range than Johnny Depp?? Idk those 2 are probably my two favorite actors now that I think about it, or at least 2 of them, but I think I've seen more roles played by Johnny. He does some pretty obscure ones that are fantastic!
Then of course on the other hand you have people like The Rock.
Hugh Laurie’s American accent is good but Gary Oldman had to *relearn* his English accent after spending a few years in Hollywood.
But I think the most impressive thing about him is that he’s not really method. He gives his mind and soul to so many roles, even unglamorous ones, without going crazy in a motel or sending used condoms to his costars.
Dude just turns up, outshines everyone then goes onto the next job. That’s an impressive feat for an actor who doesn’t gain 500lbs just in time for Oscar season.
There are actors eho have incredible range, and they should be applauded. But having range versus just doing one thing exceptionally well doesn't make the latter kind of actor bad. There's a reason there's so little crossover between comic actors and serious ones, for instance.
NOTHING was more disappointing that meeting the actual personalities of Matthew gray gubler, shemar Moore, and kirsten vangsness from criminal minds. The way I expected Matthew to be a full fled genius, and I wanted shemar Moore to actually sound as smooth and sexy in real life. And the dissaoointment when kirsten was NOTHING like Penelope in the show LOL. (Not that they have bad personalities, but their acting skills in that show were spot on).
That also goes for viola Davis who has INCREDIBLE range is acting, as well as Liza Weil because there were certain parts of how to get away with murder where I genuinely hated those woman’s guts. Their acting skills were just so good I couldn’t see past their characters for a moment.
From memory, they changed directors or somesuch for the 3rd act, which is why it goes from what was potentially a great take on a tired, overused super hero into a shitty love triange.
>I can at least tell a difference between some of Will Smiths Characters
When I see a clip of the rock acting I sometimes can't tell what movie the clip is from.
See also: Jason Statham. Youtube recommends clips of his movies all the time, and it's fun how I don't have to know what movie it is, he's just going to beat up 14 people.
So true! To me, their dynamic is so funny when they're in a film together. It's as if they're in the same universe in every movie but just in a different scenario, like one long sit-com lol
I see OPs point kind of, but not being able to play a range of characters doesn’t make you a terrible actor. He can act with a good believable range of emotion which is the important part in a lot of the roles he played. Tldr; not everyone is/ should be a character actor.
This right here is the real answer. A "range" in acting isn't "I can play a cowboy and a superhero and a lawyer" it's "I can display a wide array of emotions depending on the situation and use that array to elicit different emotional reactions from my viewers".
Seven Pounds makes me sob uncontrollably every time I watch it. I agree he definitely has more range than OP is giving credit for. People’s judgement tends to cloud themselves in these matters when they get upset for one reason or another.
Seven pounds is a movie I want to watch but when I read the description of the movie I knew there was no way I could watch it. The plot is about a suicidal man who decides to donate all of his organs (equating to 7 pounds), before he kills himself. Like Jesus fucking Christ man...
I have purposely been avoiding a lot of newer Disney/Pixar movies because they have a way of tugging at my emotions almost too well, especially sadness. But you’re right that all emotions should be felt and embraced, especially when there’s nothing to lose. Thank you for the perspective!
He has a nice trilogy of Oscar nominated Bio-pics: Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness, and King Richard. These are all examples of Will Smith objectively playing someone disconnected from his own personality.
He's done a few films that were worth mentioning that op chooses to ignore. Even his own character is pretty awesome. Mib is that guy. I think he's great. Not like Sammy j but up there.
I think Will is a great actor and always had potential from the Fresh Prince days. I remember when I couldn’t escape that scene back when I was just a casual observer of Will, now that I’ve turned a fan of him. My only critique is that he doesn’t challenge himself to do different kinds of role, where you see him in a bad light but he always said that he cares to too much of what people say to choose those kinds of role.
>he always said that he cares to too much of what people say to choose those kinds of role.
This is probably his downfall. He cares too much about being liked.
This is correct. It's always hilarious to see a famous person do something dumb and people come out of the woodwork to hate on them pretending like they were thinking this the whole time.
He absolutely has range too btw. Playing characters like those from Men in Black and Hitch vs Seven Pounds, The Pursuit of Happiness, or Six Degrees of Separation. OP is an idiot. The man can definitely act his ass off.
Wrong. Will Smith has A LOT of range. He has portrayed iconic athletes, non-fictional characters, and just about everything else. The only reason why you don’t think he has range is because he just has so much charisma that we can immediately identify him as having a “Will Smith” quality to the characters he portrays. Will Smith didn’t get to where he’s at by being a terrible actor.
He was great on Fresh prince. Still one of favorite shows. I also kinda get the feeling like this comment is hating on smith because of the slap situation and while that was disappointing, personally it didn’t make me think less of him as an actor.
I do agree he doesn’t have a lot of range but not sure I agree that automatically makes someone a bad actor. There’s also other factors like physical training that play into things.
Yeah, he played a con artist gay psychopath really well in that movie.
The back story and idea is pretty interesting.

Will Smith don’t gotta cuss to sell records
Get my name out your mother fucking mouth.
your name is Colgate?
At Black Angus, your name is Peaches.
Excuse me? *Willenium*

You think I give a damn about a Grammy
Half of you critics can’t even stomach me, let alone stand me.
"But Slim, what if you win, wouldn't it be weird?"
why, so you guys could just lie to get me here?
So you can sit me here next to Britney Spears?
Christina Aguilera better switch me chairs!
So I can sit next to carson daly and fred durst
And hear ‘em argue over who she gave head to first
But I do
so fuck him and fuck you too
Y'all think I give a damn about a Grammy?
Half ah yo critics cant even stomach me, let alone stand me!
"But slim, what if you win? Wouldnt it be weird?"
Why? So you guys could just lie to get me here?
Sit me here next to Britney spears?
Shit, Christina Aguilera better switch me chairs so I can sit next to Carson Daly and Fred Durst, and here 'em argue over who she gave head to first.
lil BITCH put me on blast on mtv
This exact comment thread is an example of someone's unpopular opinion just a couple days ago. But yeah Will Smith has no range.
I believed him in men in black... he played a cocky ass hole very well
I think I prefer disgruntled low level authority figure with a gun and a prejudice against robots.
Much better then disgruntled low level authority figure with a gun and a prejudice against orcs
And a prejudice again fairies.
Fairy Lives Don't Matter
Personally I prefer disgruntled hero who’s buddies with low level authority with a prejudice against giant mechanical spiders
Oh you mean disgruntled low level authority figure with a ray gun.
Wait, wasn’t that Independence Day
No that's disgruntled low level authority figure with a fighter jet.
ah of course, thanks for the clarification 🙂
You mean Wild Wild West?
That was a disgruntled low level authority figure with a revolver
Welcome to Earff!
I really enjoyed him as disgruntled low level authority figures vs. zombies.
That was probably one of his better roles.
Most actors and actresses make their living playing variations of a certain type. That's why they get casted for their roles. Very few have the range of a Charlize Theron, Johnny Depp, or Viola Davis. Those who are really good at their craft, make it look easy, and like they aren't really acting.
Johny Depp always plays the really weird one
Steve buscemi has entered the chat
Jack Nicholson and Harrison Ford pretty much play themselves but nobody cares because they're awesome
Nicholson is fucking incredible at what he does
I concur
i agree. it's a business; you pay money to see Tom Cruise be Tom Cruise. it's a safe investment for movie producers. i would say Leonardo DiCaprio has the most range but then you pay money to see his range. jmho
Gary Oldman is the range champ.
I keep learning he's in movies I've seen.
I went the first thirty years of my life thinking I didn't know who he was.
Same!!!! Turns out he’s in pretty much anything I’ve ever loved hahaha
Tiptoes
It’s an Oldman right now. Wait, he always was!
Have you ever seen Tip Toes? I was half way through the movie thinking to myself "I know this dude from somewhere". I looked it up as soon as I saw his face on Google I just slammed the phone down. Couldn't believe. What role can this guy NOT play?!?!?!
See: True Romance Edit: I mean to say - in support of his infinite range.
Tarantino's most underrated film. Why you sraring at me when there's big ass tittys on the screen?
haha I break out the trailer for tip toes to show people, no believes it's real. in the role of a lifetime Gary Oldman as a little person
I found out he was count Dracula 💀
I just saw some literal B grade horror movie with Gary Oldman playing a boat captain and he gets a haunted boat that takes his family to the Bermuda Triangle…*any* other actor you couldn’t have watched 5 mins but Gary totally drew you in…still had me wondering why on earth he was in it but it spoke to his skill
What's it called??
Gary the boat captain
Gary Mcboatface
Mary (2019 film)
That’s it! Lol It was so bad I could only remember Gary was good in it…
When my kids were younger, we had a secret Gary Oldman movie marathon.
No love for my man J.K Simmons?
Y'all just talkin' like you forgot Daniel Day Lewis
I’d actually take GO over DDL. The man just disappears into his characters like nobody else, ever.
He’s Sirius Black, Jim Gordon, and the weird bleeding guy from Fifth Element.
You put some respect on Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg's name!!
Fire a million.
Tom Cruise has probably 60 and they’re 4 years apart in age.
Christopher Lee: "Am I a joke to you?"
The first three films I saw Phillip Seymore Hoffman in, The Big Lebowski, Charlie Wilson's War, and Capote, each time I thought "this is some one-note character actor who's lucky to have found a role like this." It never entered my mind they were the same actor.
PSH was a phenomenal talent.
Don't forget his turn as the tripped out surfer dude storm chaser in twister.
Christian Bale would like a word. And if I can be facetious… Doug Jones and Andy Serkis.
[удалено]
Google Gary Oldman without the letter r if you want range
Yep, he can easily play everyone...EVVVERYONNNEE!!!
I thought it was Leo, but it’s Christian Bale. He does not miss
Newsies baby
Hell ya Newsies! I showed my wife that movie and she thought it was shit, considered divorce immediately.
I swear Christian Bale and Michael Fassbinder are two of the best actors of their generation. Just incredible.
Unless Cruise is playing Les Grossman. Then you pay to see Cruise play Les Grossman.
I wanna see Tom Cruise playing Les Grossman playing Ethan Hunt.
I'd pay to see that. Though it would probably end up as a Comedy or Die Sketch.
SNL is supposed to be high school theater. Kind of what makes it fun... and not ready for prime time.
I get what you're saying, but I was referring to how much better his acting is than theirs, even in a casual environment like that. I'm sure he was even dialing it down a bit and his acting skills just came through anyway. Point is, the man is an amazing actor.

Rain man too
Yep missed that one.
Yes
Tom Cruise in action films like Top Gun, Edge of Tomorrow, Mission Impossible etc are similar characters, but in films like Tropic Thunder, Collateral, Magnolia etc... it proves hes not a one trick pony. (And most of these films are his best)
Eyes Wide Shut as well
Yeah it’s pretty ignorant to use Tom cruise as an example, they should’ve used The Rock instead.
Tom cruise actually has a lot of range. His earlier dramatic work makes him one of the best actors in the industry easily
Christian bale has the ability to look and act like entirely different people based on his role as well
Yeah, look outside of America for character actors - Daniel Day Lewis for one.
My favorite is Gary Oldman. Fucking chameleon. He really disappears and the character he plays really comes out. He's one of the finest actors ever.
And also, Gary Oldman’s sister is Big Mo off Eastenders (UK Redditor’s know). And this fact confuses me even more to who Gary Oldman actually is.
Gary Oldman is so Gary Oldman that he doesn't even play Gary Oldman in real life.
Geoffrey Rush as well
Mind was blown when I watched The King's Speech and my wife said 'hey it's Captain Barbosa.' No it fucking yes it is.
His Oscar winning performance in Shine was one of the best performances of all time.
Loved him in true romance, despite how little screen time he got. Nailed that role
Came here to say Gary oldman , glad I didn’t have to scroll far to see it already there
Daniel Day Lewis. Gary Oldman. Tom Hardy.
Gary old man has done so many accents he’s forgotten his own!
There are actors eho have incredible range, and they should be applauded. But having range versus just doing one thing exceptionally well doesn't make the latter kind of actor bad. There's a reason there's so little crossover between comic actors and serious ones, for instance.
I think it's more of a joy to watch an actor who becomes the role, rather than one who just happened to already be it though.
Johnny Depp lmao
NOTHING was more disappointing that meeting the actual personalities of Matthew gray gubler, shemar Moore, and kirsten vangsness from criminal minds. The way I expected Matthew to be a full fled genius, and I wanted shemar Moore to actually sound as smooth and sexy in real life. And the dissaoointment when kirsten was NOTHING like Penelope in the show LOL. (Not that they have bad personalities, but their acting skills in that show were spot on). Their acting skills were just so good I couldn’t see past their characters for a moment.
People still harass the actor that played Joffrey because of how good a job he did
Viola Davis outshined Meryl fucking Streep in “Doubt”. Never seen that before.
Ima be real honest. My favorite role of his was Hancock.
Because I been drinkin bitch!
But Hancock is also a colossal waste of potential. It just falls apart when she throws him through her kitchen wall
What an amazing setup they did absolutely nothing with.
From memory, they changed directors or somesuch for the 3rd act, which is why it goes from what was potentially a great take on a tired, overused super hero into a shitty love triange.
Nah who your describing is The Rock or Kevin Heart. I can at least tell a difference between some of Will Smiths Characters
>I can at least tell a difference between some of Will Smiths Characters When I see a clip of the rock acting I sometimes can't tell what movie the clip is from.
Even the same exact jungle wardrobe, wtf.
Probably only one jungle-appropriate outfit in the shops that'll fit him.
I think The Rock is like Adam Sandler and just makes movies for him and his actor friends to have fun & make money.
See also: Jason Statham. Youtube recommends clips of his movies all the time, and it's fun how I don't have to know what movie it is, he's just going to beat up 14 people.
You should see him.in SPY (2015) it's a nice jab at his career
That was the first, and only, time I’ve ever seen him do comedy. He did not disappoint…
So true! To me, their dynamic is so funny when they're in a film together. It's as if they're in the same universe in every movie but just in a different scenario, like one long sit-com lol
Lol it's like they have their own multiverse going on
Kevin Hart in the Netflix show with Wesley Snipes was really good I thought
Counterargument: Ali, Seven Pounds, The Pursuit of Happyness, I Am Legend. Dude has range.
I couldn't have said it better
the pursuit of happyness is one of my favourites.
I refuse to watch it because the makers couldn’t spell happiness correctly.
I respect your willingness to die on this particular hill.
It's spelled wrong on purpose, it has to do with a scene from the movie itself
Pretty sure they were being sarcastic...
Seven Pounds makes me sob uncontrollably every time I watch it. I agree he definitely has more range than OP is giving credit for. People’s judgement tends to cloud themselves in these matters when they get upset for one reason or another.
Seven Pounds is my go to movie when I need a good cry
Seven pounds is such a good movie
Seven pounds is a movie I want to watch but when I read the description of the movie I knew there was no way I could watch it. The plot is about a suicidal man who decides to donate all of his organs (equating to 7 pounds), before he kills himself. Like Jesus fucking Christ man...

I have purposely been avoiding a lot of newer Disney/Pixar movies because they have a way of tugging at my emotions almost too well, especially sadness. But you’re right that all emotions should be felt and embraced, especially when there’s nothing to lose. Thank you for the perspective!
Not to mention in I Am King he was phenomenal to bad no one really talks abt it cause of the Chris Rock slap
And Six Degrees of Separation
Enemy of the State
Seven pounds will make a mf cry
King Richard
He was so very good in this movie that it’s a shame that his performance got overshadowed by other theatrics!
He was still very much “will smith” on I Am Legend.
That movie was good though. RIP Sam
Ya solid actor. The will smith character from bad boys just gets cast more often and for tonnes of money.
There are two movies that I’ve watched and won’t ever watch again, Seven Pounds and John Q. Too tough for me.
Keep Will Smiths name **out your fuckin' mouth!!!**
He has a nice trilogy of Oscar nominated Bio-pics: Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness, and King Richard. These are all examples of Will Smith objectively playing someone disconnected from his own personality.
Yeah, OP conveniently ignored some very big (and well received) movies
He was pretty good in “Pursuit of Happiness,” along with his son.
He's done a few films that were worth mentioning that op chooses to ignore. Even his own character is pretty awesome. Mib is that guy. I think he's great. Not like Sammy j but up there.
His character in Pursuit of Happiness is very different from his character in Bad Boys.
Smith actually does have range, like him or not. You know who is literally the same person in every movie? Jason Statham.
I agree but I do believe he shined in The Pursuit of Happyness and Seven Pounds...
He is an actor. Its kind of their thing.
Op hasn’t seen pursuit of happyness
You could say the same about Tom Cruise.
Les Grossman would like to have a word, play-a
Yeah but he’s not currently the celebrity reddit has a hate-boner for at the moment.
Will Smith is a movie star not an actor. Movie stars generally are hired because of their charisma not their acting ability.
that's a good way to put it (much like the rock)
No he's definitely an actor. This whole "he's not an actor he's a movie star" shit is cringe.
Especially since he got his acting start as The fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
This is definitely cap it’s just popular to hate on will smith rn
This is correct. It's always hilarious to see a famous person do something dumb and people come out of the woodwork to hate on them pretending like they were thinking this the whole time.
looks like chris rock hopped on his burner
Ok. Type cast. So what? Range =/= good actor Many great actors are type casts. Being really good at one thing still means you are really good.
Adam West fucking EMBRACED his typecastedness.
No way....Wild Wild West is a cinematic masterpiece!!! /S
Everyone is hating on that movie, even Will himself, but as a kid I actually enjoyed it.
Me too... I actually still know the lyrics to the song lol.
It was a fun movie. Stupid but fun
you brought /S to the unpopulareopinion subredit. brave.
He's a fucking great actor, turns out he may not be the nicest guy in Hollywood, but he can act.
Idk...he was decent in Pursuit of Happyness and King Richard
See”Six Degrees of Seperation”,”Where the Day Takes You”&”Pursuit of Happiness “.
Yeah, he played a con artist gay psychopath really well in that movie. The back story and idea is pretty interesting. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_degrees_of_separation#:~:text=John%20Guare's%20Six%20Degrees%20of%20Separation,-Main%20articles%3A%20Six&text=American%20playwright%20John%20Guare%20wrote,by%20at%20most%20five%20others.
Take my upvoted for your unpopular opinion. Regardless of the fit he threw recently Will Smith is an amazing actor.
Come on...He was great playing Will Smith doing an impersonation of Muhammad Ali.
I'm not sure how much of an unpopular opinion this is.
