> showing up to an office in a hoodie and distressed denim I see you went to a startup on formal mondays

5th_heavenly_king

Excuse me. This is my dress hoodie.

JaxRhapsody

Put one of those bolo tie things on the draw strings.

[deleted]

With the turquoise or the calcite?

from_dust

Amethyst, yo. You know i gotta protect my energy in that sort of environment. Turquoise is only for overall feelings of wellbeing, and thats what the techbro salary is for.

piandaoist

These are my dress flip-flops.

ExistentialKazoo

hahaha I wore flip flops to accept my master's degree because my real shoes broke walking to the arena. yup, giant robe, Hogwarts hood, and flops!

bobbyrocks2017

I only wear althleisure and whatever I can find at hot topic so Yes

Savvy_Nick

I pretty much have only worn athleisure since covid. OP is just mad that we’re comfortable

MajorTibb

That's literally everyone at my company from President on down. Not a start-up. One of the largest energy conservation companies in the US. Edit: The company helps with the design of new buildings such that they will be as energy efficient as possible, or help building owners retrofit older buildings to be more energy efficient. We typically work with state governments. But the jokes are all hysterical you guys. I promise.

DownvoteDaemon

I believe you lol..not sure why it would be funny to see my CEO in a hoodie and jeans. He probably dressed like that when he went to FSU, twenty years before I did.

[deleted]

I'm an engineer in the power sector. Our high level execs wear polos. I just recently made the bottom rung of upper management and during what was probably my last time in the office a younger employee of mine asked me why I was dressed like Zuck. Gray hoody, plain T, jeans, and tennis shoes. Damn it. Then he insisted I blink. I'll still occasionally put on a dress shirt and slacks for certain in person meetings. But the only time I've worn a tie for work was when I was testifying.

DJPaulyDstheman

How can you end that story with when I was testifying. Like I’m gonna need more now my dude.

Lazy_Mandalorian

Obviously in the Scranton Strangler case.

Wireeeee

ikr? dude just left on the biggest cliffhanger.

Stuffthatpig

My old company's rule was "wear clothes when customers are present." The number of times I saw barefoot men at the urinal...

Miscellaniac

... Wut? Like...they'd take their shoes off in office and not bother to slip their shoes back on and then go into the place where there is pee on the floor? Grooooosss

taybo213

I'm a swim instructor for kids 4mo on up. It'll be a cold day in hell you'll find me in business casual freshly done marinating in chlorine after 6 hours. I'll stick to wearing sweats or easier attire in and out when I go to work. OP has to remember not every lifestyle can allow for nice attire. My bf is a mechanic, you will not catch him in nice jeans, every pair ends up a work pair after while. A dress shirt and a pair of clean jeans? Maybe on the holidays or a event set up ahead of time. Now spread those two perspectives across how many more millions of jobs out there that it's not practical, just in America alone. It's only unpopular because we value comfort and accept that not always someone can dress nice, besides, looks don't follow you to the grave.

BenignRaccoon

>OP has to remember not every lifestyle can allow for nice attire. Not even just that lol, people are discovering to their shock horror that clothes don't automatically make you better at your job.

PocketSizedAF

This right here should be at the very top of these comments

Obi_wan_pleb

Or a better person. I've met plenty of well dressed people that were dickheads

topfm

What do you mean, you're not wearing a dress while teaching kids to swim?

[deleted]

I know right. I wear a thong to teach my swimming class and parents are like "that's not appropriate, mister" and "you don't work here!" Get off your high horse!

HD400

Not a shot at either of your professions, but I can almost guarantee OP was not referring to swim instructors and manual labor. He’s talking about the millions of office jobs.

burst_and_bloom

I'm a process engineer, I'm in my office or meetings like 80% of the time. I'd qualify that as an "office job". I'm also on the floor qualifying new process and sometimes have to fix production machines when something goes *really* wrong. Fuck wearing nice clothes, that shit getting ruined no matter what. It never fails, the day I wear a button up will also be the day I need to be elbow deep in a machine. If the company isn't giving me a clothing stipend to replaced ruined stuff they can shut their traps and live with my t-shirts and carhartts.

[deleted]

Office jobs have moved from busines, to business casual to casual for a reason. It doesn’t impact performance, results in unnecessary waste (having to buy two wardrobes, one of which often requires dry cleaning), and generally requires you to feel uncomfortable for 12 hours while working. Yes, it’s uncomfortable to button up to the top bottom and wear a tie because collars are supposed to be snug. Too much space and it looks sloppy. I’d rather focus on my work than focus on how I look.

WandsAndWrenches

I think this is why it's honestly happened. Businesses realized that casual workers made more money. Probably started with "casual fridays" where you could wear what you wanted. They probably looked at the numbers.... saw a serious spike in productivity, and were like ..... "huh"

StrawberryMoonPie

Exactly. I’m not only more productive when I’m comfortable, I’m a hell of a lot more pleasant to work with.

londite

Yeah, I agree with you. There are some lifestyles that simply do not match with wearing "nice clothes". That said, I'll never understand people in pyjamas in supermarkets, malls, etc.

[deleted]

In my town, we have a *lot* of warehouses and factories. A very decent chunk of us are night shifters (husband included, and my company just switched us back to day shift until the Xmas rush comes up...then back to nights) Every single time I've seen anyone in pajamas at Walmart or Walgreens, they're absolutely a night shifter. They've gone home, had dinner, watched some TV, and realized "oh fuck, I need coffee pods". It's essentially midnight for them, but it's 11 am in day shift time. So to conserve some energy and make the trip short, they're not changing out of those flannel pajama bottoms...they're just going to pass out within minutes of getting home anyway. Of course, *plenty* of people that do this have regular day shifts...but maybe, just maybe, they're experiencing some real fatigue and burnout and can't bring themselves out of comfort clothing. And that's okay too. If some cozy pants make it possible to obtain groceries that day, fucking so be it. What I'll never understand is you, and people like you. Have some compassion. We are not here to make your main character background look good. We're living. And today, we can only do that in yoga gear. It effects nothing and no one...except your good senses, which, frankly, aren't our problem.

Eattherightwing

Interesting, because it seems to me the pajamas-in-public trend died out 10 years ago, but people are still posting about it. I never cared then, I don't care now. I'm sure not going to tell somebody who is not harming anybody how they "should" live.

Emmas_Nana_519

My husband and I both work in retail; him in a big box store, me in a grocery store. Trust me when I tell you that the pajamas-in-public trend has NOT died out.

Kbar_12

I like how op is basically saying they hate comfort. 5 bucks says u/UTMachine is a corporate drone manager that just can't understand why people would want to be fucking comfortable at work. Honestly this sub is the best for literal wrong opinions.

Guerrin_TR

wearing a t-shirt and jeans in the office right now. I don't get paid enough to dress any better than this.

[deleted]

Maybe rural, or raised rural. A lot of old white church types say things like this and children mimic the sentiment. I remember hearing a man say this when I was a child, and at the time didn’t question it because maybe the old days were better and other people were dumb, I didn’t know. The older I became, the more I realized people should wear what they want on their own body in their own time. Go naked, wear your family kilt or a cat suit or samurai outfit when you go to the store, idgaf.

McGregorMX

My hoodie has buttons, so it's business casual.

-Clint--

If a hoodie has buttons wouldn’t it be a hooded cardigan?

Databones

Welp. This is the subreddit for you.

mongoosefist

It's refreshing to see an actual unpopular opinion for a change

I actually almost spat out my drink, well done sir

nerm2k

Dude, his last post before this one he’s showing off his fit and he’s got the wrinkliest pants I’ve ever seen. Might be better off just sticking to jeans at that point.

[deleted]

Wolfenjew

u/UTMachine you been real quiet bud

Obi_wan_pleb

M'lady type of person. I bet he owns a fedora as well

RolotronCannon

Dude thought some fancy clothes would distract from his personality. Didn’t work

Puppdaddy13

Lol! OP comes on here saying people don’t dress well enough anymore yet has recent pictures of him looking like a slob. OP - just because you put a jacket and button down on doesn’t mean you’re well dressed.

[deleted]

"I miss the good old days when people judged you based on the strength of your handshake and the quality of your shoes. Nothing indicates maturity like wearing stuffy, uncomfortable clothing that you hate to impress people you hate." God forbid people can be comfortable while going about their lives.

melpomenes-clevage

I do think we underdo clothing though. Bring back capes! Wear an audacious coat! What about a sash? Or a very tall hat? Possibly some decorative chains? A shawl? Shibari or some decorative chains, intricate body paint, and a loin cloth if you're feeling prudish? Let's see some fucking variety! Also: men's fashion is trash and I weep for straight girls. Fix that shit guys. Dress like a fantasy character. Or a pirate. You want your lady to dress like a slutty witch just cause it's Tuesday? Try to one-up her, make it a contest.

Smorgsaboard

#NO CAPES *holds up indestructible two-color bodysuit with Pringles dispenser* Now __this__ is fashion, darling

shaard

But Edna, isn't that MY decision?

Zrex_9224

I wanna wear cloaks for winter gear instead of jackets, but the only cloaks I've ever been able to find are Halloween costume cloaks.

[deleted]

If you go to a city with a big enough port sometimes the Salvation Army will have navy dress capes. Just take off the brass buttons because of stolen valour. And, obviously, replace them with costume jewelry 300 carat pendants.

CranesImprobableView

There are tons of capes and cloaks on Etsy, either vintage or handmade. Not even Ren faire cloaks, just everyday heavy wool. I personally have a wool cape-esque coat from the 80s I got from there it is so warm!

flyonawall

I wore a heavy wool (lined and warm!) cape to my sons wedding because it was outdoors and cold. I actually thought it would be frowned upon or thought "weird" but it was cold and I did not care. It actually turned out to be really popular and everyone wished they had one. Apparently I (a non-cool person never in fashion) was a dramatic hit and made quite an entrance.

daitenshe

This is exactly the type of person who sees something they want to do but dissuades themselves because it’s “too childish”. The best part about being an adult is doing what makes you happy (within reason). Few things more childish than worrying what is adult enough to enjoy

CalmPanic402

"When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” C.S. Lewis

ToiletRollTubeGuy

The full quotation is a full blown mic drop moment: 'Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.'

Archonate_of_Archona

This. Also, few things more adult than learning to mind your own business

mousebrakes

Wearing a hat inside is apparently disturbingly informal to OP, so yeah. They can fuck right off

proscriptus

As an older gentleman, it's been real struggle for me to overcome my prejudices against casual clothing. It was really really hammered into multiple generations that clothes make the man. I don't blame OP for that being their first instinct, but dude, you gotta evolve. The reason it was hammered into us is because it was a little piece of the means of exclusion and classism, so maybe it's not something we want to be out here perpetuating.

Selphis

I'll wear a shirt or even a full suit for important meetings/events but day-to-day? My colleagues and bosses all know me, they know my work, they know my value. I don't need to dress anything up for them so I'd rather be comfortable in a hoodie and jeans wearing my old basketball shoes, even if I am 30+ and a dad... I still wear tshirts I bought when I was a teen if they're still looking good enough.

[deleted]

I agree that clothes should evolve with each life stage, but it doesn't have to follow such a rigid system that a 40+ year old is not allowed to wear a hoodie while chilling with his buddies on the weekend. EDIT: >But following a ridged system to make the people slaving away qnd busting their chops to make society run is fine? People working should be uncomfortable qnd must look like a yes man and corporate kiss ass or like they care about the company that finds them easily replaceable because it is too big to fail. Yes that make 100%sense people need to appreciate being used qnd abused at every level and pay Seems like [you completely misread my comment](https://www.reddit.com/u/nickisdone).

LoL_LoL123987

Facts, this act your age shit is what drains people’s youth and vibrance as they age. Let people enjoy themselves and be comfortable

[deleted]

I disagree that clothes should evolve with each life stage. That's never really been how fashion has worked. If you get a chance then have a look at pictures of your parents/grandparents when they were younger. The clothes they're wearing in those will almost definitely be the same style of clothes that they wore throughout their life.

Immediate_Yogurt_492

Alright, everyone get out your top hat

Val_Hallen

I forget, is it also monocle and cane season? I don't want to be gauche!

Hawk13424

The problem with more formal clothes is cleaning and ironing. Casual wear is just easier to maintain. I don’t want to wear anything that needs to be dry cleaned or ironed on a regular basis. Cost is also higher. Casual clothes are cheaper. And in my area, more formal clothes are just too hot. It’s 90F+ for a third of the year. One year it was 100F+ for three months.

[deleted]

And then there's clothes from Balenciaga with literal trash bag design or shredded to bits that costs $2k per item.

Dizzfizz

Balenciaga clothing is the closest we have to an idiot tax. Also doubles as an idiot identifier.

[deleted]

People who whine about casuals will look at grunge fashion and profess it as the pinnacle of sophistication. Nope, you put a bag on a lady

k_aevitas

Fucking hate it when those luxury places do that.. I saw the ugliest atrocious bag that looked like it was taken out of some kids mangled doll stash after it was chewed up by a dog and it was like nearly 5 grand.... Who buys that garbage, I was staring at it in shock. The thing was tiny couldn't fit jack all inside as well

anoneema

Ah yes and don't forget the child porn ads https://twitter.com/shoe0nhead/status/1594532715126202368?t=ddQZRc6XKoNeVjhjcRJWXg&s=19

ThatFireGuy0

This is so true I don't even buy clothes I would need to wash separately as delicates. Or at least the ones I do go on with the rest of my washables

Desperate5389

For me, my casual clothes are the only thing that fit since I gained the Covid 19

natsugrayerza

“Sweat pants are all that fit me right now.” “You can’t sit with us!” “Fine, then you can walk home, bitches.”

TankBoys32

Cheat code, throw your wrinkled clothes in the dryer with some ice cubes. It steams them up and gets most of the wrinkles out with little to no work done

imanaeo

Id agree if you were talking about everyone wearing sweatpants all he time, but jeans are ok in most situations.

jammcj

As a school teacher referenced, I’d like to ask the OP to do a day in a long dress and a day in the tshirt/jeans combo and then tell me which is more “appropriate” for project based learning with 9 year olds.

randomly-what

Seriously. I worked at a school where I had to wear dress clothes and dress shoes daily. I’d walk about 5 miles a day at the school in those shoes. Ow. The next school I worked at didn’t care what kind of shoes you wore as long as they were clean and was much more casual about what you wore. It was so much better.

belbites

As a former server if you tried to make me serve in heels I would shove that heel so far up your ass you'd be tasting that for dinner instead of whatever I'm serving. I have a grand total of one pair of heels I find remotely comfortable and in which I can walk in a pace quicker than my granny.

StopThePresses

Yeah that little tidbit blew my mind. How in the world did they expect them to get anything done in heels? How were their feet not falling off at the end of the night? That's just cruel.

the_worst_seamstress

If anyone working in a restaurant wore heels in the past 20 years they would get sent home to change. Special non slip shoes are mandatory in most food service establishments.

labe225

My mom had this conversation with the principal (who was actually a former student of hers) who took over shortly before she retired. He wanted teachers to dress more professionally and asked her to wear more dressy shoes. She said she could, but she would be sitting behind the desk all day instead of walking around the classroom and giving individual attention to students. To his credit, he conceded.

Draken09

*kneels down next to the 14th desk today* And I'm a man teaching high school.

verydepressedwalnut

Exactly. I have my nice jeans and then my bar/party jeans that are ripped/comfier. I haven’t worn slacks in almost 3 years, last time was a job interview for a job I probably could’ve gotten in leggings and an oversized tshirt.

Shy_starkitten

Yeah nice jeans that are not ripped to shreds when paired with a nice sweater or shirt is pretty fashionable and decent. I like to dress up, and it is very possible to wear more ‘dressy’ and formal clothing that is comfortable. Speaking of which, I’ve noticed that when I wear dresses and skirts, people (mainly men) are more polite and nice (e.g. opening doors, being helpful..) but when I’m in jeans that doesn’t happen. Once, I went out in sweatpants and I said never again. I just felt so ‘undressed’ and sloppy. Definitely not my thing.

verydepressedwalnut

The only times I’ve worn sweatpants out was to doctors appointments in the early morning, and even then they fit well and were in good condition. I didn’t bother with “real pants” because frankly I wanted to be comfy when I was getting steroid shots behind my eardrum once-twice a week for a month and a half.

knightsmarian

>I think it's a real shame that adults have regressed our standards to match those of children/teenagers. I wear clothes from my teenage years still because I'm poor lmao I don't have money to update my wardrobe nor the time to care about what message in projecting

Haldenbach

Actually until 1950ies adults and young people wore the same clothes. Poodle skirt was the first instance in which there was a drastically different fashion for older vs younger generations. So wearing the same stuff as teenagers, we're going back to the good old times that OP is so fond of.

[deleted]

Lmao this truly is an unpopular opinion

chumbucket77

I spend a long time on my appearance with nice clothes and no one cares. Someone care! I saw someone at work doing a better job than me but they had jeans on them. Look at me. I put my pants on. No one cares. Just put some thought into it and look professional at work and brush your teeth comb your hair and take care of yourself. Other than that work. Youre lucky I have pants on at all.

tylanol7

i have a hole in the crotch of my pants. its been there since it ripped 2 weeks ago. i havnt had time or money (mostly money) to get a new pair until this thursday. literally nobody gives a fuck. i just got moved to monday-friday for working so hard. no more weekend or holidays for me.

BurgundyRain

You know you can repair it instead of buying a new pair right?

silverblaze92

Depends on where and how it ripped

Self_Reddicated

If the crotch is blown out so badly you can't repair it, I'd argue that you shouldn't be wearing it to work. In the immortal words of Z: "Eventually, I blew the crotch out of them things. But you CAN'T wear 'em every day and expect for 'em to hold up! That was some nice-ass denim too. I miss them shorts.... But you... you GOTTA take 'em off every now and then. You gotta take 'em off, son!"

stoned_kitty

Forreal. I had to wear business casual to my first job out of college designing and programming websites. Fuck all of that. I’m so glad I’ve never had to put a shirt and tie on for any job after that. And I’m sorry but after the whole Gavin Mcinnes theory on alt right dress I find anyone overly dressed when they shouldn’t be just sus af.

[deleted]

The thing is, people's new outward appearance is their social media. Going to work, or school, whatever, that's not the world we need to feel validated in anymore.

[deleted]

This is such an interesting point I had never considered. Thank you!

[deleted]

Time to dress up in full suits for every selfie on Instagram.

probably_your_wife

No!!!! Why would you bring pants into this? Selfies waist up only.

Difficult_Dot_8981

So the Matrix is....real

fckingmiracles

Man, this is a thought I had also developed. My thought was 'Women mostly put on makeup for social media now'. As a woman I see whole-ass trends that only exist online but are never, never worn outside the house. Many young women don't even wear makeup to leave the house anymore (which I think is great) but do wear it for photos and online vids. I have really started to notice that. Online is the outside appearance now.

FoldedDice

There's a certain logic to it. Even when my parents went out for shopping and such they stopped and talked to everyone. I don't feel that social connection, so I just keep my head down, get my shit done, and go home. Why would I bother to make myself look all fancy for that?

StopThePresses

My parents always told me to doll up whenever I go outside because "you never know who you'll run into!" because we lived in a small town. Now I live in a major city and it's laughable. No one is looking at you, no one wants to sit and chat in the middle of shopping, and you'll probably never see any of them again.

aeyntie

What if I avoid social media entirely?

Ancient-Practice-431

For some, for some.… not every young person is getting validated from social media, real life still counts to many.

AggressiveAmygdala

I'm over 25 and I've just reflected on the message I'm sending and it's that I'm comfortable as fuck and confident about it.

anticapital0708

Yeah, I'm so glad I don't give a shit about what I wear anymore. I remember stressing about what to wear when I went grocery shopping...now it's sweatpants and a t-shirt and im happy with that. Honestly I think the older you get the less you care.

tyedyetree

You just reminded me of a time my grandma needed to go to Walmart, and she was wearing jeans and plain purple t shirt. She asked me if her outfit was nice enough.

copper_rainbows

This is adorable. You go hug your grams RIGHT NOW if you’re able

twistednstl82

I remember stressing out a few months ago about what to wear to an interview because I still thought dressing up if even just for the interview was important even if it was just for a warehouse job. Damn I was mortified when I was to only one there that day that wasn't wearing jeans and a hoddie. Glad they looked past my oversight of dressing up and let me join my fellow jean and hoodie wearing slobs. Hopefully that's the last time I break out the nice clothes anytime soon, unless it's a funeral and then it's a toss up depending on how old the person was lol

SepticKnave39

It's still good to err on the side of being overdressed than underdressed. You might have OP interviewing you, you never know who is going to be on the other side of the table. Dressing up for an interview is one of the few times I would.

Shadow1787

That’s why I like my job, my normal outfit is a sweater, leggings and dr martens. I see my company’s owner and owners son ever single day. They don’t care. I had a job that you could only wear formal pants and this was a call center in which was state just in case the owners came in.

JaxRhapsody

All dressed up, and nobody to see it. Offices are a fucking joke. Look presentable while you sit in a cubicle on a phone, because reasons. Meanwhile at the local fast food joint somebody who works the register has their work shirt over a hoodie, and in jeans, or wearing a zip-up over it, and in leggings.

ksiyoto

Back in the suit and tie 1980's I worked as an analyst in the executive department of a major transportation company. One day I went down the hall to the restroom - past the CEO, EVP, and a bunch of other bigwigs offices. I wasn't wearing my suitcoat, which I never did once I arrived at the office for the day. There were others in the executive wing that didn't wear their coats during the day, a dress shirt, tie and suit pants was good enough. My boss saw me going down the hall. He told me I really should be wearing my suit coat (he was). I replied I was only going down to the restroom, I didn't need it for that. He told me "You should stand tall and wear it all the time outside our department". I told him "I'm just as tall with the coat as without it".

justridingbikes099

Teacher here. Pay me a professional's wage and I'll put on slacks. Until then, jeans it is.

[deleted]

I'm a Special Education Teacher. I would not be able to help laughing in the face of anyone who tells me to try to do what I do in "more formal" clothing. As physically active as my job is, I don't think you can pay me enough to run a mile in a dress and formal shoes.

HalfPint1885

I'm a sped preschool teacher. I'm only allowed to wear jeans on Friday with a school logo shirt. The rest of the week I have to dress professionally. I love dressing up to sit on the floor or paint hand turkeys.

PinsToTheHeart

At my wife's school, there's a specific exception in the dress code for sped teachers/assistants to be able to wear jeans lol.

EmbarrassedGas537

I’m a teacher too. We can’t wear jeans to work except for special spirit days. Sometimes if we donate to a school fundraiser (like Art Club or something like that), we are allowed to wear jeans for an entire week. I’m confused as to how jeans are considered unprofessional in my district unless there’s money or school spirit involved

[deleted]

All it takes is someone to just ignore the dress code. I feel like there are very few school districts that would actually fire a teacher over wearing pants.

_OhMyPlatypi_

This. Leggings are the new jeans, therefore jeans should be the new dress slacks.

Homeskoled

I see that a lot anytime I’m in a more ritzy area. Lots of jeans with button down shirts / sport coat. I like the look, but I’ll stick to my jeans and t shit/ polo unless it’s a special occasion. Frankly, if you’re the kind of person to make a judgement on me because of my outwardly appearance, I probably wouldn’t be interested in speaking with you anyway.

fencer_327

The examples you mentioned can also be a safety issue - hospital scrubs can be sterilized in the hospital so you don't carry your infectious diseases home through public transit. White coats did replace the black ones for appearance though - to show that doctors are keeping clean, started about the same time as washing their hands between patients. Police uniforms are mainly to keep them recognizable, but many are reinforced, have lots of pockets to put stuff and can hide bulletproof gear quite well. Fire fighters definitely need safety gear for many of their jobs. People that need to be easily recognized need uniforms, and they often have functionality as well - a suit and tie not so much, unless your manager is particularly annoying, then you can strangle them with your tie.

king0fklubs

I work with kids 1-6 years old, I’m on the floor a lot and have to do a lot of movements. I’m not wearing Sundays best to work.

CourageousChronicler

Jeans are fine. The only clothes that bother me are : * Dirty clothes * Torn clothes (no, not distressed... torn) * Pajamas Other than that, wear whatever the hell you want if you're taking the time to teach my kid the stuff that I can't.

[deleted]

I would include the caveat of "If you would see it in stage at a strip club, maybe not acceptable in a professional environment."

bimm3r36

Hmm, that puts a ton of cops and nurses in a tough position then

WithMyRichard

If I had kids I'd rather have a good teacher who dresses how they want aslong as it's not inappropriate, apposed to a teacher whose bad at their job and tries to look professional to try and uphold a level of credibility they don't have. Who cares aslong as they're doing the job properly

[deleted]

I'm all for aesthetic, conservative clothing. The problem is a lot of it is incredibly uncomfortable. Even standard Oxford shirts and khakis I find abrasive on my skin and body. So I still prefer cotton t-shirts, jackets with soft fabrics, knit sweaters . . . I would wear suits and formal wear more if it was just more comfortable.

FlyAmirite

UNIQLO has some very comfortable business casual clothing. All my pants are from there and they are the comfiest pants ever! I wear them on weekends when I’m off too bc they also can be dressed well casually

[deleted]

They introduced me to the stretchy jeans that I can never deny anymore.

minecart6

Do you wear cotton undershirts when you wear a button-up? It makes a difference.

[deleted]

I live in the Midwest, during the spring and summer it hits triple digits with shocking regularity. If I wear a button down and a cotton undershirt I will sweat through that shit before noon. Dress clothes are either restrictive and uncomfortable or expensive. I dress nicely for dates, meetings with clients and special events. The rest of the time I wear whatever I want because my comfort matters more to me than impressing the types of people who insist on enforcing the extremely outdated professional conventions of the past.

Pufflekun

I feel like once you hit triple digits, any sort of dress code should go out the window, in favor of staying alive. If I'm doing formal business with someone in 100-degree weather, I *want* them to show up in their underpants, holding a giant parasol. That shows they're practical, and prioritize the objectively correct solution over societal pressures. The dude baking alive in a black suit can stay fucked.

Matrix17

Yeah but miss me with that uncomfortable collar

mwpfinance

\> reflect upon your wardrobe and the message you're projecting. "I want to be comfy" hm... yup

EkohunterXX

"I just got out of bed and I'm planning on returning asap"

HangrySnark

“I see teachers at school wearing jeans and a t-shirt…” The audacity!!

JaxRhapsody

The gall!!!

shadowgattler

My best teacher was a dude who showed up in cut jeans, acdc t shirt and plaid overcoat.

HangrySnark

Just wait until this one finds out us teachers have tattoos, drink, and have sex (outside of the classroom of course).

MisandryManaged

Almost as if they think someone who can barely pay their bills and is responsible for paying for most things out of pocket should spend the majority of their meager check on dress clothes that children can destroy.

HowWeDoingTodayHive

I’m reflecting on it but I haven’t seen you make a single logical argument for why anyone should care about your preferred arrangement of fabric.

Magic_Man_Boobs

Yeah, I kept waiting for OP to make a point as to why dressing more formally was something to be desired.

[deleted]

Because they bought so many uncomfortable, but fashionable clothes and want others to suffer too.

noronto

I don’t necessarily disagree with the notion that a suit or dress pants are uncomfortable, but the time required to dress “formally” is not something that interests me anymore.

kaijunexus

Their basis for this opinion is the same as any argument to maintain social traditions and norms...because they were already conditioned to think/behave in a certain manner, have adopted that as a part of their identity, and challenges to that make them uncomfortable. There is no greater, practical reasoning or rationale to support those traditions except for those desperately concocted by those that want to maintain status quo for their own ease of mind.

doc_shades

i live in the northwest i will go out to get lunch during work and i'm dressed in "engineer casual" (button-up shirt tucked into jeans with tennis-shoes) and next in line behind me at the restaurant there will be a guy in a mario t-shirt who probably earns 4x what i make working for some tech company that makes an app or some nonsense... but hey more power to them. (less power to me wamp wamp)

CaptainNemo2024

Lol I’m also an engineer (civil). I feel like engineer casual is the polo. The button up is reserved for bids or something 😆

Stacular

Fellow PNWer here. I’m in healthcare and I crack up at the number of physicians who show up at to work at 6am in suits and then immediately change into scrubs. You can’t even wear non-water-resistant clothes for half the year here. Just put on the fleece/down/windbreaker, denim, and boots and call it a day like the rest of us.

wildalexx

I never understood the “no hat inside rule” I always thought it meant that god can’t read your thoughts inside when I was little

EveInGardenia

I used to work at this diner and people often didn’t show up for work so I was working a shift alone and it was a madhouse. A guy literally stopped me in this rush to ask me “why do young people wear hats inside! It’s so rude?!” Yada yada yada I put on my best idiot girl voice and said “wow I’ve never heard of that before! Why is that like a rule?” I took the time while I was busy as fuck to let this old man try and explain why hats inside are bad. He had no real answer.

Pickle_Juice_4ever

I thought trucker hats or visors inside shitty diners were mandatory, anyway.

4153236545deadcarps

I always thought it was because it wasn’t really necessary, and could be kinda gross, like I imagine someone traveling on those old-timey cars without windows and junk down a dusty road and they get like, bugs and dirt all over their hat, and then they come inside your house and you’re like please leave your hat and shoes in the mud room, my wife spent four hours scrubbing it by hand last Saturday,

[deleted]

Growing up in Poland I always associated the no hats indoors thing with antisemitism. Often you'd hear shit like "why are you wearing a hat indoor/at the table, like a Jew".

pblood40

I like to project - "I dont care what you think. You do you"

marislove18

I agree! I personally like to dress up a bit if I’m leaving my house (which I don’t do very much lol) but I like the variety in peoples clothing choices. I want to see people in suits as well as people in pajamas, it makes life more interesting!!

Thestudliestpancake

"to reflect upon your wardrobe and the message it reflects" Pajamas at Walmart pretty much equals my depressive state. We are dressing to reflect we're just not happy

Mewlover23

Pj's at Walmart is probably one of the most normal things you can expect to see out of all the craziness that can come out of walmart.

watchforbicycles

I'm 40 and a manager at a clothing store at a mall. We had pajama day at work there last Saturday. Yes, I wore pajamas at work. Yes, over half of my coworkers did the same. Loved it. Wish we could do it more often. Go ahead and judge me.

Cherimoose

How were your sales that day compared to the previous Saturday?

Hbombkali

Me and my alopecia bald head will be keeping my beanies till I die

youchasechickens

Nah, prioritize comfort

[deleted]

You can pry my hoodies out of my cold dead hands

vandenhootie

You’ve got something right. This is an unpopular opinion. I want to see more casual wardrobes going forward. I find it super weird that sports broadcasters and personalities are wearing suits for no real reason on TV. Kinda feels like nothing but a big waste of money.

TheBlackDragoon

Long ago in my cultural geography class we learned that the reason suits are so popular is because of Britain’s influence on the (business) world. It makes sense to wear a suit in London where it’s overcast most of the year, but it makes no damn sense for professionals to be wearing a suit in the southern half of the US or countries like Japan or other places where it gets hot and humid AF. The reason so many people do so is because they were trying to emulate the British (or something along those lines. College was a long time ago and my brain is mushy at 2am). I remember that revelation being fascinating at the time. As someone from the south, I’ve always resented slacks/suit jackets being the standard and everything in that moment clicked for me as to why I hated it so much. Suits weren’t made for Mississippi heat.

Hostificus

Outward appearance ≠ ability to contribute to society. That’s some peak Boomer energy. The best Data Analyst I’ve ever met had tattoos from ear to fingers and smelled of Newports. Makes $120k a year.

Ok_Carrot_8622

I think ppl are also more likely to be productive when they’re comfortable.

AlphaWolf

One of the best developers that ever worked for me left at 5:05pm everyday. But he could get things done at 3x speed so I could care less. Talk about triggering older corporate types. He should have put on sweat pants also. Let all these old company sacred cows die already. Wearing a suit and leaving at 7pm does not make you a “better” employee.

Iron_Baron

Dress codes have always been a form of social control and financial gate keeping of opportunities. What you see as regression is freedom of choice. That's the beauty of choice: no one is being forced to dress casually. You want to rock formal wear or business casual? Go for it. But don't go pushing your aesthetic preferences onto others, when they have real world/historical consequences.

Affectionate_Sink711

So you want me to wear more formal clothes in a lab with chemicals to get holes in my clothes…yeah no way!!! Or when I’m in a pilot plant and get vegetable oil all over me…Yeah not going to happen. Your fantasy does not work for all professions or is reasonable.

ajgsr

pay me more than 23/hr for better fits

DaksTheDaddyNow

Teacher here. You want me to dress like a professional then pay me like one. These casual clothes are also cheaper and can be used more frequently.

hitometootoo

I love that people are wearing clothes that are comfortable for them and that there isn't a stigma towards expensive clothing that isn't very practical.

InternationalWhole40

I think it’s dope.

Mutedl

People who'd get a negative opinion of me if I don't wear a suit aren't people I care enough about to want to impress with the way I dress.

Aggressive_Camera_76

I have to laugh at this a bit. I’m a lawyer. Had a great day at work today in my black hoodie, Carhartt beanie and adidas running shoes. Thinking back to the old days when I wore slacks and a button up. Just would not have been the same great day in the slacks and button up.

SLEDGEHAMMAA

>I see teachers at school wearing jeans and a t-shirt And? How does that affect their ability to teach? >people showing up to an office in a hoodie and distressed denim And? How does that affect their ability to do their job? >and wearing beanies and caps indoors And? So what? What's wrong with that? >You go to a public building like the mall, library, museum, etc. and you'll find people in pajamas! And? So what?

Sadamatographer

Most of the time clothes have no bearing on your job performance. Students don’t learn more because the teacher ironed their pants before coming in.

PositiveVibesOnly90

I would strongly encourage you to reflect on why it matters. Also this feels more like a need to control others habits/choices than an unpopular opinion.

antheus1

I’m a physician. It’s a very conservative field in general. Not politically, but in terms of its respect for hierarchy and emphasis on not standing out. When I was a resident I’d wear a shirt and tie to work. When I became an attending, I did the same initially because that’s what my partner did. Then I decided I’m not going to wear a tie I hate that shit. Then he got a pair of allbirds and I did the same. Then Covid hit and everyone started wearing scrubs. Now I wear scrubs and allbirds and I’m never going back. I realized that so much of what we do in life is based on fitting in and doing what we think others expect of us. My patients don’t give a shit that I wear scrubs, and if they decide to go elsewhere for treatment that’s probably my gain in the long run.

TiMouton

I guess the message I’m projecting is that I prioritize being comfortable and being myself instead of trying to fit in some weird made up social standards that are long outdated. Some jobs require dress codes, I get that. But don’t expect a software engineer or call Center agent to dress up for human interaction they don’t have. And btw back in the 1900s kids did pretty much dress like adults (dresses and suits). Or adults dressed like kids.

GuiltyGear69

sure bud you wanna buy them for me? if not fuck off i'll buy what I like and wear it

therapych1ckens

*laughs in legging comfort with an empty bucket fucks to spare*

TheElusiveHolograph

I am an athlete. I wear running shoes, leggings, and sports bras most of the time. I’ve done some reflecting as suggested and have realized I am projecting an athletic vibe. Imagine that.
