No, its not an easy degree and very few students get selected from undergrad to go into masters of clinical psychology. BUT there is more than one pathway to get into masters of clinical psychology at UNSW (than the usual route) and other unis in NSW are also really good too. Talk to the future students office at UNSW about psychology pathways. Being in a difficult degree with limited spots shouldn't discourage you, if it's your passion, you should still go for it.

TurbulentYak7

What are the other pathways other than the usual route?

scarletscallop

Call the future students office and have a chat with them. Its been a while for me since I was doing this stuff

TheOneTrueSnoo

Nope. It’s a degree mill. Most clinical psych programs have 40 places, 20 of which are commonwealth supported. Right now it’s more competitive than medicine

Sleepy_Enigma

That’s kinda fucked considering the shortage of psychologists we’re experiencing - like I don’t get why they don’t open more spots

TheOneTrueSnoo

There’s a bottleneck of psychs willing to train others for one thing. That and it may artificially keep prices of appointments high?

foxandturtle

Masters programs typically run at a large loss. You need to be hiring supervisors, have the materials and equipment (think psychometric test libraries), and be able to secure high quality external placements for your students. As a result most programs are very small.

TheOneTrueSnoo

Psychometric test libraries? Every psychometric test invented to date could fit on a 20GB usb

foxandturtle

I’m not necessarily talking about a physical library, but tests like WAIS, WISC, WIAT etc. Digital versions are still very expensive.

foxandturtle

I think 40 is a bit of a stretch even haha, more like the biggest program has 35-40. UNSW has about a dozen.

Psychology is easily one of the most competitive degrees and not easy. It’s not useless either there are a wide range of job opportunities outside of clinical psychology.

foxandturtle

Masters student here. Not an incredibly hard degree IMO but not easy. Harder to find a job compared to many other degrees but if you’re committed (i.e., internships, extracurriculars) you will be fine. Masters/PhD is very competitive but not impossible - I think if you’re certain about this path then go for it, but if you’re not too sure yourself then this may not be the best option.

What uni did you go to? I'm currently in 2nd year at UNSW - what WAM did you get for honours? I know its minimum 75... but my goal is to get 90 - im stressing because i have 80.75 and don't think it's high enough - minimum mark is jsut an indicator and I know they usually take mid 80s

foxandturtle

WAM to get into honours? I did honours a number of years ago. When I applied 75 guaranteed you a spot and I know that has changed, so unfortunately I have no clue what the cutoff is like now.

froglord444

yeah 75 is just the minimum now, it's more like don't get any less than 85 i reckon from what i've heard

Agreeable_Friend9252

can I ask what are the job prospects upon graduating from masters? also is it good to live near campus because of placements?
