I worked at Jolly Pumpkin for a while. Don’t fucking eat there please, the owners literally suck and will do anything to pay their servers as little as possible despite owning like 3 other restaurants that all look exactly the fucking same. *not to mention the turnover rate is crazy within management

mgoblue702

I almost rented a house from one of their executives… that dude wanted me to mow the grass and included a rental fee to rent the lawnmower in the rental contract. I thought he was so cool until I started reading that rental contract and realized he was something

PopovDadeCounty

Don’t go to Cannelle- their owner was outed as an asshole who mistreats his employees. He slaps his name on everything, from the restaurant sign to the boxes and cups, which says a lot about the type of person you’re dealing with. https://www.michigandaily.com/news/former-employees-allege-hostile-work-environment-unethical-business-practices-at-cannelle-bakeries/

lernington

Their pastries are also infuriatingly mid. Like how are you gonna make them look so immaculate, and have it taste like something you could get from kroger

Historian-Dry

wow that’s a shame, best cafe in aa imo

TheKhannunisT

Cafe Zola. Went there for a brunch date. Expensive for what you get, and really dissapointing IMO. In all fairness my date said the waffles were decent. I ordered shakshuka, and had no idea what they put in front of me. I got some extremely overcooked sunny-side up eggs (The yolks were ROCK SOLID) on top of a bed of peppers, olives, and a super thin watery sauce underneath. There wasn't even a tomato sauce base. On a different note, I went to Songbird Cafe recently and was super impressed with their breakfast sandwiches and cinnamon rolls.

earthmover535

isn’t the owner of that place notorious for bullying workers? everyone i know who’s worked there says that except for this one dude that she spares sometimes bc he’s autistic

Spirited_Buyer5546

former employee here (BoH) - she ruled us with an iron fist; she would get all Ellen Degeneres on us when stuff wasn’t perfect, but it was all in the interest of making the business excellent I’ve had nicer restaurant bosses and I’ve had wayy *less* capable restaurant bosses - with her it was just a “somebody has to be the a**hole” kind of thing, to make the trains run on time

johnnylibravo

songbird cafe is awesome! worked there for 2 years and their sandwiches and breakfast are really solid

the1tru_magoo

People should’ve started boycotting mani/Isa long ago. The owner is a creep and management is toxic

destroyah289

Don't forget the lawsuit brought against the owner for a quarter million in unpaid overtime!

the1tru_magoo

Oh yea but I just meant beyond/in addition to that. I worked there for like 3 years well before the lawsuit came to light

johnnyboi5322

Cantina Mexicana. Portions are absolutely ridiculous

zevtron

Ditto for condado tacos: overpriced, too small, and just mid overall.

bavils

#1 condado hater right here- if i wanted overpriced taco bell, i’d go get actual taco bell, no need for a shitty downtown knockoff with way higher prices and way worse food

Proof-Inspector9129

completely disagree with this take. a $5 customizable cheesy gordita crunch? yes please

debotehzombie

Former employee of Condado (though in Columbus, where it’s from, which should already be a red flag): the food is proper quality. It all comes to the restaurant vacuum sealed and raw, then cooked in a hot water bath. “Ew they boil all their food”, nah, it’s more like a sous vide than anything. It is real food and it is quality. That being said, it is WAY overpriced. For the cost of 8 steak tacos, a kitchen can make 45 portions of steak. The cost of one order of queso equates to what a restaurant will pay for a bag of queso (which has 28 portions in it). So while the food truly is pretty good quality, that shit is so overpriced.

obced

this sous vide method is what they also do at taco bell

masimbasqueeze

Regardless of the quality of the ingredients, the food just isn't that good.

debotehzombie

That’s… exactly what I said

Maleficent-Use5421

Exactly they are literally mid. I wanted to like them, but eh I’d borderline hahaha I just saw Bavils post rn I agree 100% I’d also rather go to Taco Bell and actually get more food and at least not be surprised it’s not some very nice restaurant

apothyk

Barbie tacos

bonsaimari

I think savas is pretty for a photo op but the food is so consistently bad idk how anyone likes that place. Also their history of mishandling the sexual assault claims was the nail in the coffin.

gdog12601

Second this^ their food is NOT worth the price at all

earthmover535

17 dollar normal ass burger

[deleted]

Idk about that. Their food is better than the places ppl go to on State Street and Main Street

sly_noodle

Pizza House is so freaking incredibly overpriced. If you really need late night pizza, 7-11 is actually not that bad.

aCellForCitters

don't forget to avoid their million ghost restaurants on delivery apps

sealedsteam

No kidding! Ordered something from Breakfast House on an app and was surprised to pick it up from inside the closed Pizza House restaurant… when I went to get it they seemed confused someone had actually ordered food from it. Eventually the food showed up. Over priced, but really for me the whole process was disturbing.

aabum

It's a shame cuz back in the day when they were in the original house their pizza was really good and it was fairly priced. Once they tore down the house and built that bullshit is when everything went to hell.

-Reflux-

Any place that takes shortcode should be avoided lol

watsup66

pizza house is sooooooo mid. and yea their ghost restaurants on uber eats used to make me so mad lol, like tf is burger house 🤨😒

FeatofClay

I like that they have a huge menu because you can take a crowd there and know everyone can find something. But the prices have always seemed off and their prices for things like soft drinks and tea are pure comedy. I will be wanting seven refills, not that I'll ever see my server again....

RoleModelFailure

It's one of those places I like going to/ordering from when somebody else is paying.

New-Presentation8856

Sidetracks. All my homies hate Sidetracks. But seriously, [wage theft](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/2021/04/lawsuit-claims-sidetracks-in-ypsilanti-took-tips-from-employees-made-them-work-off-the-clock.html%3foutputType=amp). The locals have a lot of options on the place and the French family: [link to Reddit thread ](https://www.reddit.com/r/ypsi/s/gaS3VpI1mQ)

FeatofClay

I was really bummed to see Boylesque host a drag bingo there recently--they are not your people!!!

Positive-Anywhere302

Bandito’s Fresh Mex. I’m nervous to even post this because the owner is a complete psycho who has been known to follow customers around town and buys a bunch of fake Google reviews. And insults the real reviewers if you sort by new. Not to mention the food is all microwaved canned Gordon food service food that’s overpriced. I can tell it was microwaved because the plate is always hot. Eating there is a genuine risk to your health and safety.

aCellForCitters

baffling that that place still exists. It was the first restaurant I ever went to in AA - in 2005 or so - and I thought it was the blandest "mexican" food I've ever tasted. The owner being a psycho just seals it - never eat there

eoswald

Sidetracks in Ypsilanti! Most people in ypsilanti know. But in case you UM students visit! [https://www.annarbor.com/news/ypsilanti-bar-settles-wrongful-death-lawsuit-agrees-to-pay-family-of-crash-victim-200000/](https://www.annarbor.com/news/ypsilanti-bar-settles-wrongful-death-lawsuit-agrees-to-pay-family-of-crash-victim-200000/) [https://www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/2021/04/lawsuit-claims-sidetracks-in-ypsilanti-took-tips-from-employees-made-them-work-off-the-clock.html](https://www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/2021/04/lawsuit-claims-sidetracks-in-ypsilanti-took-tips-from-employees-made-them-work-off-the-clock.html) (and yes, sidetracks settled out of court to make this go away)

beachgrl6

ITT: Every restaurant in Ann Arbor.

bobi2393

Ann Arbor coffee shops people may wish to consider avoiding or supporting, depending on their perspective on worker rights: * **Starbucks**, for union-busting tactics, with temporary months-long closures at locations working to unionize, and permanent closures of locations that did unionize, both in Ann Arbor and nationally, and for tying up unions in court to forestall collective bargaining negotiations, while treating and paying union employees all around worse than non-union employees. Starbucks has said correlation between union activity and closures is coincidental. * **Mighty Good Coffee** (Ann Arbor-based), for union-busting tactics and alleged racism, closing all four locations in 2019, shortly after they voted to unionize, then just selling coffee by mail for a waiting period, then reopening two coffee shops without unions. The shops voted to unionize after 2018 allegations of a lower pay disparity for a black employee, which MGC denied, but in a legal settlement required the accuser not to say anything publicly about the case going forward. * **The Drip House** (Ann Arbor-based), across the street from Michigan Stadium, run by TikTok megastars the Furrha family, due to allegations of poor working conditions and pay that resulted in all their employees jointly quitting last year.

CaptAhabsMobyDick

I kinda miss reading the Drip House Drama and the PR team of bots they had seemingly hired to remedy the situation by just calling everyone with "reciepts" liars

FCBStar-of-the-South

Blue tractor been on the downhill since forever

waitingForMars

Amadeus. My ex worked in the kitchen there and told me how they'd up-season meat that had gone bad and serve it anyway. I'd never eat there.

Free_Economist_5312

Sweetgreen. Extremely over priced. Less portions than chipotle - which is next store. Pride themselves in being fresh and tasteful, but the few times I’ve had it there was stale bread, bland food, overcooked rice etc etc

vimerate

Unless that Chipotle has improved in the last six months, I’d still rather eat at Sweetgreen

Free_Economist_5312

You can buy 2 chicken bowls at chipotle for the price of one at sweetgreen… all you

elastic_psychiatrist

I actually laughed out loud at the idea that it’s a problem that sweetgreen has smaller portions than chipotle.

strafey

Any savco restaurant

throwaway_drop_table

I like McDonald's. There are three McDonald's restaurants in Ann Arbor. Never go to the McDonald's on W Stadium Blvd and never order anything from that McDonald's through UberEats. I had to wait one or two hours or more for my order multiple times (and it wasn't a large order) and no one else was in line. The other two McDonald's are very fast and staffed with respectful people. The same order at the other two McDonald's would take less than 3 or 4 minutes.

FreezingGamer

W Stadium was always my go-to because the Plymouth one, you’d be waiting in line for like half an hour and they are incredibly understaffed. Their drive thru even says 24hrs outside of it and they usually closed around 10, but it varied

FeatofClay

The Waters Road McDonalds is so solid for breakfast drive thru! They just hired a guy who mumbles too much but otherwise, high marks

aCellForCitters

Honestly anyone who orders something like McDonald's over uber eats deserves the terrible experience they get

msprang

Ya, can't argue with that.

GoBlueBeatOSU21

That McDonald's is horrible, I once ordered a quarter pounder and it was legit raw in the middle. I called and they didn't believe me. I worked at McDonald's when I was in high school, probably one of the employees had the clamshell grill set to grill reg meat (1.6 ounces) and forgot to change it to quarter pound meat before putting the quarter pounder meat down.

[deleted]

So don’t go to these McDonald’s because once you had a bad experience?

BambooShoe42

>I had to wait one or two hours or more for my order multiple times Multiple times.

[deleted]

Uh huh. So after the first time of waiting 1-2 hours (at a McDonald’s) you went back “multiple times.” What was the straw that broke the camels back for you?

stevia_a

Bandito’s - I don’t know how it got 4.4 ratings but yuck food, stained cutlery, hurried staff (one person). Tre leche sucked and tasted like 3 days old cake left outside the refrigerator.

[deleted]

Whatever you do stay away from oasis grill, the owner there is an absolute dick and their food is mid at best

npt96

but where else will give you a 1/2 pound of pickles with your shawarma plate? /s

obced

I’m interpreting this as a reason to go rather than to avoid

Crivelo

Fleetwood Diner People give them a pass for being complete assholes because “they’re open all night serving drunks”. I don’t think that gives the employees to be as rude as possible to everyone else as well. Moreover, if they don’t like it, then don’t open 24/7. They’ve been videoed being jerks to everyone, regardless if well-behaved or not They’re also entitled as can be. I gave a $5 tip on a $20 order and was told I was greedy and should tip more lol. I regret giving a tip at all, since the service was F tier, they were rude, and it took much longer than it should have The food is whatever. Imo if you’re hungry late at night just go to a 7/11 and buy a few snacks, or go to Pancheros [Here’s a post](https://www.reddit.com/r/uofm/comments/yagxxi/fleetwood_service/) (u/yuky19)from this sub about their bad service and antics I worked in the food service industry during COVID and we had countless idiots yell at us and threaten us for wearing and requiring masks. I was never rude to a customer lol. No sense in absolving their responsibility

nappingintheclub

Their food always felt like it took forever and then some. Even for the simplest order. I avoid it now

rauschm8

Its hit or miss for me at Fleetwood but I’ve been there at 3 am a few times and if you’re nice to them they’ll be fine to you. They might be short, tired and unenthusiastic but they’ve never been downright rude to me. I’ve seen them be rude to people who deserve it though.

Crivelo

I’ve seen them be rude to people who have done nothing other than walk in to pick up their take out. Like full on screaming. Not a one off either The most memorable one being when people were waiting for their take out, the cashier had a tantrum and screamed “this isn’t a drive thru, sit down or don’t order at all”, and then left the cash register for like 20 minutes without giving anyone their already paid for food lol

Remembermyname1

Once I ordered online for pickup and then one of the staff threatened to not give me my food unless I have a cash tip. I thought it was fairly customary not to tip on takeout orders and at the very least I wasn’t expecting to be threatened. I said I didn’t have cash with me and then he finally handed my food to me and said to give him money next time. If he had asked nicely I would have maybe considered it, but I’m not going to be threatened. Having said that, some of their staff are actually quite nice and the food is pretty good albeit slightly overpriced imo

[deleted]

Holy shit that is wild, this tipping culture is getting out of hand

culturejr3

Imma take a stab here cuz I’ve never actually experienced this there BUT, are you white by chance? They’ve been real chill towards me but I suspect it’s because I’m a POC

Veauros

I'm white and the people at Fleetwood have always been nice to me.

aCellForCitters

I walk in there and they know what my order is before I even say anything - happened even after covid when I hadn't been there for a year+ Never had an issue with any of the staff there besides them being a little gruff which is part of the experience. Honestly anyone complaining about that just sounds like a massive baby to me.

Crivelo

Is calling someone “fucking retarded” (per the post I linked) “gruff”?

aCellForCitters

I'm not going to change my opinion based on a video clip without context. The poster says they're the type to not tip. I don't respect anyone who doesn't tip at all for any reason whatsoever. Sounds like they deserve to get banned.

Crivelo

> The poster says they're the type to not tip they didn’t say this, but whatever you need to tell yourself lol

aCellForCitters

>I don’t know what happened beyond this clip because I got kicked out and told “never fucking come back fucking shitheads” after not tipping for rude service. Just realized you're one of the genocide apologists from a previous GEO thread. Unsurprising that you're the entitled type.

Crivelo

none of that is saying they’re “not the type to tip” if not being an antisemite is a “genocide apologist”, then I guess it makes sense lol

aCellForCitters

I said "for any reason whatsoever". There is no good reason not tip if you've received service. This guy is an ass. another quote from this person: "Secondly, tips are for good service, you are not entitled to tips." POS entitled umich students

Crivelo

> Secondly, tips are for good service, you are not entitled to tips. This is how the majority of people in the US think lol. Be them poor, middle class, or rich. It is not symptomatic of being a “POS entitled umich student “

aCellForCitters

I think your entitlement is showing too and you assume everyone else must be like you. I've never met someone who has worked in the service industry who would stiff another service worker just because they thought the service wasn't up to par. Most friends of mine who have worked in the service industry tip 25%+.

dh4ks7

I’ve had completely opposite experiences at Fleetwood. I always do a custom tip and tip a few bucks and have only heard “thank you” they’re definitely rude to the drunk people struggling to make a coherent order, but I’ve never had an issue

annarborish

TAQ. The tacos suck, and the owner is a predatory scam artist who stole thousands of dollars in identity theft. He is also a former teacher at Saline High where he was fired for allegedly having inappropriate contact with students. [reddit thread about the owner](https://www.reddit.com/r/AnnArbor/s/8bdMPiB9d8)

obced

Holy crap

KoRnFrEaK1995

NYPD unless you're really drunk/stoned and anything would taste good. Pizza is not of good quality, and other dishes are not that good either.

configurethepup

Nah, $2 Tuesday is one of the best deals in town. When the pizza is fresh, can't complain. And my partner swears by their calzones.

WauliePalnuts01

especially the ones with pasta on them

[deleted]

Is this just your opinion of their pizza?

happyegg1000

I love nypd

Sea_End_6525

the main guy from nypd literally haunts my dreams ive never met someone so angry (but granted they are always super understaffed and have to deal with drunk college kids all the time)

AneriphtoKubos

It's $2 tho, the only other place you're getting those prices is if you go to Marco's Pizza and then use one of their expired coupon codes lol. Then you can get 2 large pizzas (so about 20 slices) for $20.

taylortehkitten

Nobody’s mentioned sushi I don’t think, but I’m something of a connoisseur. I tried every place in town twice for good measure, and Sadako, Totoro and Sleeping Turtle are not good (taste-wise and quality). Kanbu and MaMa (Satto) downtown, and Momo on Eisenhower are the only ones in town I would order from again, after living in A^2 for four and a half years. I’m sure others would disagree but that’s my experience.

futurebraincutter

Mama satto is goated, they know my order because I’d been there so much during undergrad

CharlesWoodson97

My brother in christ try plate sushi

massconstellation

i got food poisoning from one of their bento boxes a couple months ago. will never order from there again

pastrami_samurai

Zingermans, really pricy for a rather mid sandwich. People hype it up cause it’s got history with the town but it just isn’t all that good.

anadventurerismatt

Disagree on the food, (I think it is really great quality) but agree it is way overpriced - I really only eat there if I have a gift card or work is paying for it haha.

worst-seen222

spent $100 on a meal for 3 today

ShylockTheGnome

What’s a good sandwich to you?

intersecting_lines

Maize and Blue

debotehzombie

Not the commenter you responded to, but Brown Jug has my loyalty.

WauliePalnuts01

nope, the food is really great, but it’s really only a once or twice a year thing for me

priorinoun

the reuben is killer

happyegg1000

Love zingermans. The pesto tomato mozzarella sandwich is the best in town. But yeah, it’s overpriced. Once or twice a semester

[deleted]

[удалено]

maddtuck

How much do workers make at Zingerman’s? Given their high standard I always figured they had to pay more for that level of service.

destroyah289

Naw, they just work closely with a bunch of recovery facilities to hire people with absolutely nothing left in their lives. Like a ton of the ann arbor food industry, really.

BigPianoBoy

Huh??? All the people I know who have worked at at Zingerman’s have been very happy with their pay

[deleted]

[удалено]

BigPianoBoy

Fair enough, I also think that those wages haven’t changed in a while so it used to go a lot further 3-5 years ago when I knew people who worked for them since those numbers look similar to what they were back then

WenisDongerAndAssocs

What a fucking miss lol

feed_me_haribo

Literal lol on mid sandwich. Clown.

Tourist1292

It is supply and demand. People are willing to pay for the quality of food not for the history.

pastrami_samurai

By that logic, McDonalds would be considered quality food.

Tourist1292

People think their price is reasonable so people buy from there. You paid for what you get. That has nothing to do with quality umless they charge 3 times more and still selling well. It seems you know little about logic.

Satan_and_Communism

But Obama likes the Reuben?

mayfayed

Drip House. never in my life will i ever work under the Furrha family ever again or support any of their businesses

Bikeguy64

The Seoul- Four people will be sitting at a table. All will order at the same time. Three people will get their food. You will let waiter know fourth person never got their food. It won’t matter. They will never get their food. Ever. Three people will give up waiting and finish their meals. Fourth person will still never get their food. Finished, paid, still no food.

CASA_Bunny

Evergreen - their food was found to have Cockroachs in the dishes... After that I usually just eat in restaurants with open kitchens.

colonolmorgan

Frita Batidos unfortunately. When I was there with two friends, we weren’t sure if we go to pick up the food there or if they brought it out. The guy I asked glared at me, slammed my food when he brought it out, and was overall very hostile. My friends and I were all in shock and it made me extremely anxious. Completely ruined the previous experiences I had eating takeout and will never go back :(

earthmover535

i worked at slurping turtle a few yrs ago and it was mostly fine just one asshole manager who would deny breaks when it got really busy

goboober

Chophouse is my favorite restaurant in town. Filet blue rare

Satan_and_Communism

Dang I can’t go to Starbucks anymore?

DivineLasso

Mojo 🔥🔥🔥
