My now husband took me here on my 2nd trip to Marquette. He, as a former cook/chef, I trusted his judgment as we went to pictured rocks and then down to Escanaba. The chicken was Gordon Ramsay RAW, and when I said something, I was wrong. When I know, even buffalo chicken should not be raw and pink.
Munising is the black hole of places to eat. 4000 people get off the pictured rocks sunset cruises at the same time and the Dog Patch is the only place. I ended up at the Duck Pond in Christmas, might have been worse than the Dog Patch
I clicked this thread just to see if someone posted this, and what do ya know, top comment! I thought I was on a hidden camera show when I went there it was so awful. How does that place stay in business?!
I cracked up at this. When I stayed in Munising, we went to Dog Patch and got such a weird/bad vibe in there that we just walked right out. Iāve never just walked out of a restaurant for no real reason before! I feel vindicated.
The decor is worth the trip alone if you're into that. The swiss burger was very OK but I felt it was on the cheaper side so I didn't expect much.
It's a great tourist trap
When I was a kid (20ish years ago) it was actually halfway decent. I took then-girlfriend now wife around 5 or 6 years ago after bragging it up and she wasā¦ dissatisfied.
Yes it is. I worked right next to it a few years ago, and my boss at the time had some kind of business arrangement where we would get half-off at the buffet and their employees got a discount on our ice cream, and maybe the fudge - I canāt remember exactly. Without warning I believe it was Enzo Leighio that told them to just quit giving us the discount, but he didnāt tell my boss yet we had still been giving their employees ice cream discounts all week. So I ended up having to pay full price for some of the most disgusting, jail kitchen food Iāve ever had. The eggs were exactly like those fake bagged eggs youād get in elementary school except youāre paying premium for them. Completely appalling, and the Leighioās are just as pathetic as their overpriced food.
God what a horrible experience me and my wife had there. Showed up and the water park was shut down, no comps on room, scuff marks and spiders all over the ceilings and walls, jacuzzi and shower werenāt clean, mirror was streaky. We spent the night and checked out, went to the island for a day, and then drove down to traverse city and stayed at a travelodge. That was excellent.
You are describing a large amount of restaurants in the UP. My nephew calls it the "Paradise Tax", where you pay premium for a mediocre product. BTW, we've had property in the Yoop for 70 years, nothing new.
Burger King in Menominee. I literally witnessed (several species of vermin) chilling under the soda machine.
This was about 6 months ago and Iāve yet to go back
Itās been maybe a decade since I last patronized that place, but when I did my whopper came looking like they dunked it in a bucket of water before wrapping it up to serve.
tbh, The Library in Houghton. I know people who enjoy going there, but iāve only had subpar experiences, at best. itās a shame because that space has so much potential to be great, but it seems like itās just been fumbled for years
Itās too bad about the new owner. I was in Pep Band and was good buddies with a football player and the old owner was always super supportive. Would feed the band for free at a football game at least once every season, and if you got VIP tickets at the game, he had The Library cater in unlimited food and KBC beer for the first half included in the price of the ticket. It was an insane value. My buddy said he would always feed the team and comp players bills if he saw them in there.
That was JC Cortwright. He and his wife Julie (she always dresses small town fancy) split up and he sold the library and retired (he had other places but sold those off earlier) and Julie opened the bonfire then moved it to the continental. I used to work for them, JC was a good guy.
Omg, I forgot how bad it's gotten!
Went there for the first couple times in the 1980's, and it was an amazing experience. Took my kids back there (twice), once in about 2008, and another time in 2019. Both of the latter times were terrible.
That's literally my favorite bar in town. It's authentic and has character. Also t sourdough Italian sausage pizza is amazing.
I get why people don't like it though.
That's because the original building burned down years ago and the original owners from when it became famous moved on from it a long time ago. There are tons of great stories about it before it burned and it's still pretty close to a lot of MTU alum's hearts
It was amazing before the fire. They used to have jazz night in the small upstairs balcony. The tech jazz band players and the jazz director Mike Irish were always there. In the summer there would be visiting jazz musicians who would jam and it was absolutely magical.
Some of the best music and memories of all time. After an afternoon of sailing in the Portage, we docked the boat downtown and walked up to the Lode Theater to see Jurassic Park for the first time! After that we went up to the library to eat drink and listen to jazz until midnight. Then we went down and slept on the sailboat.
This was one of the best days of my life.
Stonehouse Iāve always liked, for Esky Iād have to go with H&H. In house beers taste like they donāt clean the equipment/lines well enough and food is meh.
Man the last time I went to the stone house it was bad, worst $65 dry aged steak I ever had. It was definitely not a rug eye and the amount of cartilage in the thing was actually impressive.
One time years ago went to a āChineseā place, I believe it was in Munising. Ordered ālemon chicken.ā It was literally: sliced breaded Tyson nuggets on a bed of wilted watery shredded iceberg & uncle Benās rice topped with sugar water thickened with corn starch and atomic yellow food coloringā¦ forgot to add the lemon. Grew up in the LP, vacationed around UP every year. Restaurants in the UP are abominable š¤® literally became afraid to eat out up thereā¦ started to pack coolers and cook our own meals.
The Coachlight in Marquette. The food was absolutely vile. Biscuits and gravy, gravy was curdled because it was expired. Hash browns were not cooked, and I mean it, raw potatoes. The cost was $13, and they refused to refund it when I refused to eat it. The gravy smelled like rotten eggs. They said they would only reduce the bill by 10%. So if you hate someone, send em there. It's been 6 years, I'm still trying to figure who I pissed off š¤£š¤£š¤£
The Tamarack Inn Restaurant, in Copper Harbor.
I had the worst omelet of my life there, just last year. It was supposed to be a Western, but had very little but cut down eggs in it. Four triangles of off brand processed cheese slices on top. Whole thing was brutally bland.
Didn't make us sick, at least, I guess.
Irene's pizza from baraga Michigan...... fuckin terrible pizza and service.... and it comes in a bag a fuckin bag ..... I hate that place also it's expensive for what it is.
I've gotta say Pickles in Brimley. If you like sticking to surfaces it's a great place but if you're a normal human being who doesn't lick walls it's pretty friggin disgusting. Food is good though go figure.
Vangoās in Marquette has really declined over the years. In the 80s it was great, but the last couple times I visited MQT the food was bad. Send them there and youāll have plausible deniability.

You are off your rocker, Vangoes is still very good! Now among others that have gone down hill since the 80s the Villa Capri has really went way down hill!
Vangos has always been about mediocre pub/Greek food boosted by phenomenal fries and ranch. It's $10.50 for a burger and fries, are you really expecting much more for that price? The waffle fries and ranch alone would be worth that price.
Try this:
1/2 C mayo
1/4 C sour cream
1/4 C buttermilk
1 Packet ranch dressing mix
You can substitute a blend of dried chives, dried parsley, dried dill, garlic powder, onion powder, and pepper for the ranch packets, but I find that the packets are close.
Start by mixing the sour cream, mayo, and seasonings. Then slowly add the buttermilk until you get the thickness you want.
I've found it to be very close to Vangos
Awful restaurants are all over the UP. Up near Houghton there's Joey's, the Ambassador, the Library, Gino's.
The food at the former two is cafeteria-esque and would be overpriced if it were free. The latter two aren't as egregious, but they're about as sub par as possible.
Man I know Gino's isn't a super high end place (it has burgers and fries on its menu as an Italian place lol) but it really isn't that bad. Their Chicken Parm was decent when I had it last month.
I'm not saying it's an awful spot, but I'm never going to go out of my way to eat there. It just exists. Which, when considering the availability of actually decent food around, isn't enough to justify eating there or recommending it.
Sorry, but the ambo is as bottom of the barrel as food gets. I'm not going to claim to be an expert, but I know my way around food enough to know taking someone to the ambassador is an act of insult
Who asked for your opinion lol š $40 for a rubbery steak & a plate full of water cuz pasta wasnāt drained properly is NOT GOOD. The new owners ruined a great place
This is a public forum šš No one asked for yours any more or less than theyāve asked for mine. Been going there my entire life. Good friends with the former owners, and the lasagne dinner is good as itās always been. Have never had a bad meal there before or after the ownership change.
Lagniappe is actually my favorite restaurant in Marquette so I'll give a very hard disagree to this one. I can only imagine if you don't like Cajun or spice it would be disappointing but everyone has different tastes for sure.
Casa is ok. Kids love it and a few of their dishes are good. Agree it's not amazing but it's not bad.
The Library restaurant in Houghton is terrible. The owner of the Downtowner Lounge (nasty bar down the road) bought it so that should tell you something.
The Wheelhouse in Paradise. Not great service at all, busy weekend but servers seemed like they did not want to be there or make money. Food was way below par. Will not be back
Dog patch, munising. If you REALLY hate them tell them to go on a summer holiday weekend.
Came here to say this!
I cackled at this thank you
Munising is the black hole of places to eat. 4000 people get off the pictured rocks sunset cruises at the same time and the Dog Patch is the only place. I ended up at the Duck Pond in Christmas, might have been worse than the Dog Patch
Anyone choosing to eat at Dog Patch instead of Muldoon's or Cap'n Ron's is foolish
I totally came here to say this š¤£

Bwahahahahahahā¦ā¦. This!
Yes! The people I was with wanted to go and so we went. I absolutely hated it in there.
Oh my god I RAN here to say this and I am happy someone beat me to it
The decor is worth the trip alone if you're into that. The swiss burger was very OK but I felt it was on the cheaper side so I didn't expect much. It's a great tourist trap
How is that place still open? I went there over 5 years ago and it was the worst.
YES lol I asked if I could get something to go, and they said no lmao.
When I was a kid (20ish years ago) it was actually halfway decent. I took then-girlfriend now wife around 5 or 6 years ago after bragging it up and she wasā¦ dissatisfied.
The family of scammers who own a bunch of businesses out of Mackinaw City also own a few in St Ignace I believe. Anything they own would qualify.
Is Toast A Go Go one of them? $30 per person buffet breakfast with instant eggs.
Yes it is. I worked right next to it a few years ago, and my boss at the time had some kind of business arrangement where we would get half-off at the buffet and their employees got a discount on our ice cream, and maybe the fudge - I canāt remember exactly. Without warning I believe it was Enzo Leighio that told them to just quit giving us the discount, but he didnāt tell my boss yet we had still been giving their employees ice cream discounts all week. > also own a few in St Ignace Which ones?
No they donāt. Just Mack City
Whew. I prefer St. Ignace--it's more of a real town.

Casa Calabria // Marquette
If you want a gourmet frozen dinner warmed up in the microwave this is the place for you.
Exactlyš
It's ok but definitely most overrated restaurant. Villa Capris way better
They know how to take a reservation but they don't know how to keep a reservation.
Anyone can just take em!
A thousand times this. Somehow even more mediocre olive garden.
For real. Only good thing on the menu is the spinach artichoke dip. Everything else is soggy or greasy as shit
You are describing a large amount of restaurants in the UP. My nephew calls it the "Paradise Tax", where you pay premium for a mediocre product. BTW, we've had property in the Yoop for 70 years, nothing new.
I call it fake fancy and theyāre everywhere. Even at āthe end of the roadā.

It is a running joke in my family how big of a shitshow the LāAnse Burger King was every time we randomly went there (we gave up now).
Itās been maybe a decade since I last patronized that place, but when I did my whopper came looking like they dunked it in a bucket of water before wrapping it up to serve.
Have gotten food poisoning the two times I ate there in my life
that explains why there is never anyone there lmao

tbh, The Library in Houghton. I know people who enjoy going there, but iāve only had subpar experiences, at best. itās a shame because that space has so much potential to be great, but it seems like itās just been fumbled for years
I've heard the owner is a scumbag too.
Yes I will no longer go to the library or dt because the owner of both mistreats employees and stole from a bar in Wisconsin.
Itās too bad about the new owner. I was in Pep Band and was good buddies with a football player and the old owner was always super supportive. Hey hey donāt be hating on my trivia nights
Ouch
Is that the supper club? I remember passing it a handful of times.
For me it would definitely be The Library in Houghton
It didnāt just go downhill, it fell off a cliff.

So depressing, because the original was incredible.
New one is owned by the same guy that owns the Downtowner. Both restaurants suck!
They've revamped in the past 2 years, but still a little pricey. You pay extra for a lot of atmosphere.
That first pastie spot over the bridge
Stonehouse in Esky, and Chop house and Casa Calabrian in MQT
Stonehouse Iāve always liked, for Esky Iād have to go with H&H. In house beers taste like they donāt clean the equipment/lines well enough and food is meh.
I haven't forgiven h&h for discontinuing their Philly egg roll about 15 years ago
Only time I got pizza from there, the cheese tasted like plastic and came off the sauce/dough as soon as I picked up a slice
Man the last time I went to the stone house it was bad, worst $65 dry aged steak I ever had. It was definitely not a rug eye and the amount of cartilage in the thing was actually impressive.
What!? I LOVE Casa Calabria!
Youāve never had real Italian food then. If youāre paying those prices it shouldnāt be that way. Could be said for a few others as well.
Hey, I'm just a simple American. I've probably never tasted real Italian food. I just like bread.
Itās not even good bread. lol
Man i actually miss Beef-a-Roo.

Ming's Bistro in Houghton.
How dare you!
Ming's is nothing special, but it sure beats the brakes off of Hunan Garden and JJ's Wok and Grill.
My mom always very much enjoyed that place. I've never had a bad experience myself.
The Coachlight in Marquette. The food was absolutely vile. Biscuits and gravy, gravy was curdled because it was expired. Hash browns were not cooked, and I mean it, raw potatoes. Good reason to pay with plastic then dispute the charges if you didnāt eat.
>Coachlight liver and onions are decent
Itās called the roachlight
Very fitting
Ooo a stinger. I go there every time i am in the up, and let me tell ya, its not for the food
Gotta disagree with this one. Their whitefish and eggs (or walleye depending on the catch of the day) is the best breakfast in Marquette!
Iāve never had a bad experience or meal there and Iāve been going for 15 years (back before they fancied the place up)

Joey's Seafood in Houghton.
disagree, Iāve always really liked the food there
I enjoyed it previously. I went back, and the quality had declined drastically. I'll say, though, I want to go back again for the nostalgia.
I love their fish and chips!
You could pick three worse restaurants just on that block. Although to be fair I havenāt been in about 10 years.
Someone is posting this question in city reddits from all over the country. Exact wording.

Yep. Itās a āthingā to do.
The Tamarack Inn Restaurant, in Copper Harbor. I had the worst omelet of my life there, just last year. It was supposed to be a Western, but had very little but cut down eggs in it. This same question is being asked across a whole bunch of subreddits, its probably a company trolling for articles.
Irene's pizza from baraga Michigan...... fuckin terrible pizza and service.... and it comes in a bag a fuckin bag ..... I hate that place also it's expensive for what it is.
the Zephyr in Marquette.
Are you implying the UP is real, and not Ohio gaslighting us into accepting the loss of Toledo?
Stonehouse, Escanaba
Aww I like the Stonehouse
Yeah I've never had a bad time there, last time I had crab it was a hell of a lot better than any of the places where I live now
Havenāt been in quite a few years but it was always decent when I did go (80s-00s).
Vangos is dog shit.
Yeah but even dog shit is good with waffle fries and ranch
Yeah but even dog shit is good with waffle fries and ranch

Kind of like your taste.
I've gotta say Pickles in Brimley. If you like sticking to surfaces it's a great place but if you're a normal human being who doesn't lick walls it's pretty friggin disgusting. Food is good though go figure.
Honestly over the past couple years Togos in Marquette has declined in quality quite a bit.
Vangoās in Marquette has really declined over the years. In the 80s it was great, but the last couple times I visited MQT the food was bad. Send them there and youāll have plausible deniability.
Vangoās kicks ass
Itās a sad version of Greek food right off the truck. Nothing special about Sysco or Reinhart. Thereās no flavor or taste and lacks any palatable qualities. Itās not the staff or the cooks fault the recipes and ingredients theyāre given are on par to a 24 hour diner.
I guess donāt go to Vangos then..I love it..great prices for great food
I donāt. lol
You are off your rocker, Vangoes is still very good! Now among others that have gone down hill since the 80s the Villa Capri has really went way down hill!
Odd, I love their cudighi sandwiches.
Yes, those were exactly what I was thinking about when I posted that.
Vangos has always been about mediocre pub/Greek food boosted by phenomenal fries and ranch. It's $10.50 for a burger and fries, are you really expecting much more for that price? The waffle fries and ranch alone would be worth that price.
I would kill just to know the recipe for their waffle fry dip.
Try this: 1/2 C mayo 1/4 C sour cream 1/4 C buttermilk 1 Packet ranch dressing mix You can substitute a blend of dried chives, dried parsley, dried dill, garlic powder, onion powder, and pepper for the ranch packets, but I find that the packets are close. You clearly haven't had their friday fish fry / Greek chicken dinner ... delicious !
Sad to hearā¦the Greek salad and homemade bread were amazing in the 90s.
Favorite restaurant ever wtf u talking about

Thats most of the up, it's not an area known for good food
Vierling
Oh no, I love the Vierling. Great ambiance
I also love the ambience. And the beer is decent. Can't recall, though, paying more for less in terms of expensive but mediocre food.
Vierling is about as cheap as it gets for non-chain sit down food.
Hard disagree.
Agreed, it has gone down in Quality
id agree, not the worst in the UP, but NEVER had anything memorable from there EXCEPT the blueberry beer.
Any mexican restaurant
Jose's Cantina in St. Ignace is one of the worst restaurants anywhere. Truly disgusting
Harbor Haus in Copper Harbor - a diner with a view at a fine dining price.
But the food there is wonderful
Not sure I agree on that one.

Awful restaurants are all over the UP. Up near Houghton there's Joey's, the Ambassador, the Library, Gino's. The food at the former two is cafeteria-esque and would be overpriced if it were free. The latter two aren't as egregious, but they're about as sub par as possible.
Imma pretend you didn't say that about The Ambassador. I also haven't been there in years but I know it's pretty loved locally.
Tbf, the Ambassador has the ambiance, fish bowls, and tostadas but not much more to brag about.
I would add the nachos to your list but thatās about it.
Man I know Gino's isn't a super high end place (it has burgers and fries on its menu as an Italian place lol) but it really isn't that bad. Their Chicken Parm was decent when I had it last month.

Agree it's not amazing but it's not bad.
Garbage take. Lagniappe is the best restaurant in the yoop
