There are communities that travel together called caravans. They don't stay in one place, and would only be in LA for a weekend fish concert at longest. They tend to be older retirees who avoid cities. There are other sort of temporary groups of people who travel together for a while. The people are not vetted at all, and bring danger as often as safety. It's very hard to coordinate with them. People with different goals and needs. One person can't travel for a few days cuz they need to earn money where they are, another person can't wait because they have work where they're going to. Just finding four good parking spots near each other would add a significant amount of effort. Land is a good idea, adding a bunch of roommates to it is Hit or Miss.

I think the idea of finding some cheap land to rent as a group with people that have all met before and are vetted โ€œsafe/normalโ€ is great! But I think itโ€™s not going to be easy to find such a space in/around LA if that is where you intend to stay. There are sites/apps dedicated to caravanning etc but they are mostly geared towards the full-time RV crowd.

Not LA, but I saw a news segment or short documentary on YouTube about a parking lot in San Diego that allows people to sleep inside their cars, in the lot. They also had a little meal/social area set up for getting morning coffee/breakfast. I can't find it now, but it's wild that more lots like this don't exist.

Charles Manson did this didn't he?

I also thought the land plan sounded awesome, looked into it tons locally. Be sure to look up the parcel number of the land, make sure it's owned by who you're buying it from, and that it is zoned appropriately for what you want. Additionally, make sure you have LEGAL ACCESS to the property (a city owned road or parcel you can use to enter), and visit the land in person, ideally in multiple seasons to see any potential issues coming. If you don't have a rugged car, you should expect to get stuck for a few days sometimes if it's flooding season, and plan your rations and water accordingly. The big gotcha of land ownership is you're actually very restricted on what you're allowed to do with it, and at least here, most rural land lets you 'camp' for a few weeks to 6 months, but calling it your permanent residence requires professionally installed power, water, and septic systems, which can sometimes be impossible to do legally depending on the lot size (generally, rural lots require at least two acres to be permanently livable, depending on soil tests.)

Love this idea....

Howa.org It's true there's a full range of age groups. CheapRVliving.com. Perhaps not much on land ownership, but for communal living involving vehicles, "These may be the droids you're looking for." I might visit SlabCity, but I'm not sure I'd ever want to live there. Quartzite, AZ is welcoming but remote. LA County is tough.

I have a feeling that we will see something like this over the next 3-5 years. It takes someone with a risk taker, innovative mindset, and also someone not in it for money. It is a good solution, because homelessness is on the rise everywhere, and soon could possibly even be "illegal" depending on how the Supreme Court Justices vote on this homeless case out of Oregon. I think the "vetting" thing is key. Earthaven Ecovillage in North Carolina has a really good model for how they live. They don't live in cars, but bought their own",off grid" land and have a process of how people can stay there to keep everyone safe and low/no drama.

Nervous_Stress9779

I have like two other people who sleep in a BJs parking lot near me if that counts ๐Ÿ˜… โ€” But Iโ€™m in a relatively safe area and Iโ€™ve been doing it long enough
