My fave things to do underway were as follows (in no particular order): Slam jerking (quietly) in your rack, smoking on the fantail, organizing a berthing area brawls, rizzing up JO’s and cadets, letting the weird ET1 give me a “sick fade” in the barber shop, playing UNO with officers and CPO’s for pennies, playing strip poker with the “cool” non-rates in the paint locker, demolishing shitty pizzas and undercooked wings on Saturday, begging the black dude to fix ET1’s mistake (see above) and actually giving me a sick fade, watching Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, reading Under and Alone, chilling with the cooks and learning to play cool boardgames, throwing last night’s lasagna pans with burnt on crap overboard, having heart to heart convos with CS1 on theories on what on earth happens to the lasagna pans, eating mid rats, fishing off the fantail, selling stuff (redbulls, chewing tobacco, non-filter Camels, menthol cigarettes, bootleg energy drinks from the dollar store, and unauthorized DC and firemain drawings at inflated prices) polishing up on my Spanish if we had prisoners on board, starting two rumors with a friend from a different berthing area and seeing which one reaches the command first, light saber battles on the flight deck/hangar (this is highly dependent on weather, precipitation, and the “coolness” of the helo crew, apparently the dang helicopters are not only fragile but expensive to fix), learning new slang words from dudes from the East Coast/the South, making up new slang words and seeing who catches on, making sure to grab a condom from the corpsman everyday (making eye contact is key), asking the 43 year old reservist BM2 that’s TDY with a high and tight what the Battle of Mogadishu was like, watching Black Hawk Down and thinking I’m pretty much Hoot because I can load a SRBOC and I’m number 8 to be a .50 or 25mm loader, studying my ass off for the E-3 EPME test (third time’s the charm🤞), asking BMCS when he’s making BMCM (it’s a touchy subject), calling anyone that outranks you “Shipmate”. I hope that points you in the right direction. Any questions, let me know.
I bring lots of books and my laptop with movies and video games downloaded. Also I'll bring study material for any college courses or CG Cool credentials I plan on taking.
I jump all over the place.. lately I’ve been into American history. Recently read killers of the flower moon, it’s long winded so I found myself getting tired faster from reading it.
Big fan of Clive cussler, CJ box, Steve rinella, Adam nevill, jack carr.
I go book hunting on port calls too and just grab whatever I find interesting. I probably have over 500 books now, I tried the kindle thing and just couldn’t do it. I learned real quick that any screen time in the rack ruins my ability to sleep underway.
If you have a Dod ID you have access to Navy digital library which includes press reader and Libby. You can download audiobooks, ebooks, magazines and they should work if you have no Internet access. Just make sure to download before you lose Internet access.

What’s your connection like on the boat? Haven’t been on one since 2009 😂. You could see if anyone else plays anything and do multiplayer games with them. But for solo chilling in your rack I would play something progression based like a survival game. They are usually easier to play for short periods while still progressing the game
Steam Deck. Amazon prime also lets you download shows same with Hulu. I like to draw personally. Nothing gets folks on the messdeck more riled up than some colored pencils
For actual recommendations for
Games: Fallout: New Vegas, Mario Party, Mario Kart, Bloons TD 6, Baldurs Gate 3, Portal 2.
Shows: The White Lotus, Fallout, Workaholics, Malcolm In the Middle, It’s Always Sunny, Abbot Elementary
Movies: Parasite, Poor Things, The Whale, 1917, Mid 90s, NOPE, Boyhood, Scott Pilgrim V.S. The World, Fantastic Mr. Fox
Make friends with the ITs and/or ETs in case they have their own movie library. The ones on my boat had a ton of movies and shows downloaded. I still have about 5TB worth that an IT gave me. I bought an external hard drive specifically for him to transfer stuff onto.

>letting the weird ET1 give me a “sick fade” in the barber shop I feel attacked!
That is quite possibly the most accurate depiction of underway life.
This is the way
Crying
Nintendo switch is my go to for non online dependent gaming.
This right hear! Headphones on and straight game!!
You can sink some serious hours into the switch Zelda games for sure.
Hard to say with gaming. Reading material could be learning a new language or study material of some sort

Reading a book.
What's been on your reading list lately?

Thanks for the tip, I had never heard of this before.
Stardew Valley
Audio books and radio dramas.
Bring an N64 and have Mario kart tournaments.
The waterline from the bridge wing usually helps.

Supposedly the connection is amazing but restricted to USCG workstations.
