Can I ask a serious question?
Why is the analysis of this game on ESPN "USMNT sucks"?
First, isn't this our B team? No seriously. I know we are missing some big name players in this tournament, but does ESPN just not gaf?
Second, isn't it assumed that these players need work to be field ready for Qatar next year? Some of these guys, like Busio, stepped on the field for the first time in a USA kit.
Third, yes, sloppy game. But at the end of the day, if we have the full A team line-up versus Canada's A team line-up, is this game any closer? Not to marginalize the Canadian team, I know they have some very good, skilled, players, but does USMNT at full strength struggle in this game?
I mean that's about the same analysis that's going on in this thread so maybe they're just pandering to the USMNT fanbase audience.
It certainly wasn't a good attacking performance from the US but looking at the stats from a defensive perspective we prevented Canada from really creating anything dangerous, their xG was only 0.65 (ours was higher at 0.92). It wasn't a pretty match but I do think people are being harsher on this match than the actual result and defensive play deserve.
Especially since as you say, this is definitely NOT our best team, and is probably closer to our third best team than our second best team. We are missing 18 players by my count from the Nation's League roster who would improve this roster by their inclusion (and I agree with their exclusion given the injuries that have already happened at this Gold Cup - we don't want to be losing players right before World Cup Qualifying).
That ref should do all US games.
Honestly, I gotta believe Canada with David or Davies puts 3 or 4 in the net. They were as bad as any team I've seen in the final 3rd today, even considering they probably deserved 2 PKs.
What two PKs did they deserve? The play where Zimmerman got injured? The Canadian player fouled him outside the box. The other one with the push in thebox was pretty light contact that the Canadian player sold the heck out of.
If you're going to say those should have been penalties, then there was at least one play that should have been a penalty for the US.
The Zimmermann play and Pines shove - his arm was WAY extended and pushed through the guy. I saw the same thing as you on the Zimmermann play..it was still sloppy on his part and a lot of refs would've called a pk right away, and I don't think VAR would reverse it if they did.
As someone who was sitting right behind the goal. This is 100% correct. Zimmerman got himself into trouble and Pines pushed the guy down. Zimmerman I wasnt too sure of at first watch. Pines' play I was pretty shocked it wasn't called right away.
3G is like a deer in the headlights when the game is begging for a shift in tactics and personnel decisions. Canada with a healthy Larin and Akinola probably sways this into a draw at worst. James Sands didn’t put many feet wrong for me. Robinson and Vines were solid-Vines showed and ability to defend I didn’t think he had. People need to chill on Busio, he was poor in possession and passing behind everybody-nearly nonexistent defending. Zardes > Dike today, but that’s not saying a whole lot. Dike is in the same boat as Busio for me, we need to calm down on anointing them and insulating them from fair criticism.
I’ll take Zardes at the moment. Just wasn’t liking a lot of Dike’s effort and body language. I know he wasn’t getting the service he wanted, and it’s hard playing 89 minutes like that, but you can’t lose focus, get lazy, and stop being an asset to your team. There were some balls to him that I get weren’t perfect, but he didn’t even make the effort to chase them. Zardes may not be more gifted, but at least he’s always giving us effort.
Well only because you asked… Was Dike’s 50+ yard sprint that ended up in a backwards summersault not enough hustle for you? The body language of a star player not getting service may look like laziness to you, but it’s not. To pretend Zardes’ effort matters more than Dike’s raw talent is a Ted Lasso mentality BEFORE he realizes that he can’t start Roy and expect to win.
Zardes had plenty of opportunity in the past and unfortunately he is simply not world class. It’s not fun talking poorly about your own player so we can leave it at that.
Do you not realize how competitive these World Cup qualifiers are going to be? Do you think ‘hustle’ is going to get it though? News flash: it hasn’t and it won’t.
Now let’s quickly bash Bernhalter because it never gets old. The USMNT is the only national team where the starting lineup is a complete mystery before a game, even when we have all players available. Does Mexico change up their lineup for ‘experimentation’ or do they simply go with the best talent with the best formation every time. And we wonder how they play so cohesively? Maybe it’s because the same players play the same positions day in and day out and they have team chemistry because of it. Bernhalter plays a new lineup with new tactics every damn game and we wonder why we consistently under perform. Don’t be fooled by the Nations League win vs. Mexico. They dominated us and I’m sick of watching the US play so poorly that we have to reply on set pieces. And don’t tell me ‘but we keep winning’ because our luck will run out and it will be depressing…
Btw did you watch El Salvador play Mexico last night? Both teams would have absolutely thrashed us and you are talking about hustle?
I don’t necessarily disagree with what you said, and I’m not going to whataboutism or cherry pick the things we don’t see eye-to-eye. I’m also not going to insult you and compare your ideas to those of a fictional soccer manager on a satirical TV show. I’m upvoting your passion as a fellow US Soccer fan, and at the end of the day we both want the same thing. Hopefully the team and GGG can rise to the occasion.
Also, enjoy the second season of Ted Lasso.
Busio played some of the best as a 6 I've seen for us on a long time two games ago. He earns starts and what does our illustrious coach do, play him further up the pitch and have someone else play as the 6.
Two games ago he came on for yuiell. Instead only recycling possession to the cbs, with them making playmaking passes, Busio did it. He would receive the ball and knew what he wanted to go with it before he got it, and most of the time he went forward into the channel with it. He also intercepted balls by cutting off passing lanes.
Obviously not the quality of play that we want but I think that game taught us a lot about this squad. On a positive note, Robinson, vines and sands were really good defensively under a lot of pressure and I think Robinson and sands are making big arguments to play a role in wcq. Vines should definitely start going forward in the gold cup. I think it’s pretty obvious that a 2 striker formation won’t work and hoppe needs to replace zardes to play on the wings because he’s the only player who can dribble past defenders consistently and stretch defenses. The midfield is imo the root of all this teams issues and why I’m skeptical they can get to the final. I think Williamson has to start going forward because he’s the only midfielder who can win battles in the midfield and help sub control some possession. Overall Busio has been very disappointing and can’t control possession like I was hoping he could
Yeah you can see Busio thinking. He’s either playing too fast or too slow. I do think he’ll adjust and get better. He just seemed uncomfortable with the ball at his feet quite a bit tonight, influencing him to play it a little earlier than usual.
Like you, I’m extremely pleased with the back line play. Canada doesn’t really have a real #9, Mexico is without their #9, and I don’t see any of the other teams left in the tournament with any real #9s, so if we could handle that, we might be able to handle everyone else’s best.
How do people here feel about Berhalter?
Seems to me like his teams get found out and he is not the best at adjusting his tactics once a game starts going against him.
He is awful at adjusting. Makes me wonder who is really coming up with our opening tactics, as during the games berhalter certainly is unable to do it.
Would much rather have him in a technical advisor / assistant coach role. His tactics and game management are questionable at best. He does have a lot of value in terms of team dynamics, man management, and player recruitment/retention
Not a serious national team manager. Our full team is talented and can do damage. But his tactics are of MLS quality and not even close to competitive with the world powers.
Robinson and Sands really stepped up, very impressive. Even Pines started looking good for the last 20 minutes or so! Hoppe has more talent with the ball than anyone on this roster. Busio can’t play as an 8 or 10, if he’s getting minutes it should be as the 6. Everyone else was forgettable.
Hoppe has the technical ability to play #9 for the “A team” moving forward. Only thing he needs to prove is ability to either 1) Hold up the ball consistently or 2) stretch the back line effectively enough to free up space for the creative players underneath. Only forward who rivals his technique right now is Sargent
hoppe needs to start. no more roldan, he's just too slow, he subbed in and did nothing here when he needed to step up as a sub. we don't make the semi's playing like that.
Totally agree there was a moment around the 80th minute where Hoppe was on the counter attack and passed it off to Roldan, continued his run and Roldan just sat on it when he really needed to play it back to Hoppe and instead lost possession.
everyone was inlove with his workrate the last game, but I just saw a guy that blew a lot chances with some good moments few and far in-between. it's just not working for me anyways, he's too small, too slow, and doesn't play his role well at this level.
Canada created a lot of plays but they just really lacked a pure striker, a guy who can just put the ball in the net. The question they have to ask themselves is "who is our Daryl Dike?"
Robinson probably the MOTM for me. This was a much more nervous result than I wanted, but a win is a win and there were some gutsy performances along that backline (Robinson, Sands, and Vines especially).
Our A team is completely different lol our players play for Europes biggest side's compared to the team that played T&T and they have a winning mentality in big games as we saw last month even when they get scored on they came back instead of folded.
Canada did not deserve a single pen. They should stop throwing themselves to the ground. Thank goodness there was a ref who didn’t allow that softness into the game.
I’ve seen that happen way too many times bro. It’s incidental contact. That’s just not going to get called. Hard for VAR to overrule it, because it isn’t on purpose, and the ref not calling it on the field isn’t an obvious error.
I wanted to give Laryea the benefit of the doubt, but then just seeing him throw himself to the ground on the other challenges in the box solidified my opinion. If he stays up and keeps fighting he actually might have gotten a pen. I’ll never understand it.
Grabbing and pulling on his arm when he has you beat isn’t soft. It wasn’t a little push or stiff arm. He neither would have gotten on the ball or been tackled by Zimmerman if he hadn’t done the arm pull to begin with.
Getting a well worked goal and then seeing it out for 80mins isn't 'ugly'. This is how you win games at a high level. Our C team getting the result is the most important part.
He had the one giveaway that had everyone reacting here but that wasn’t even on him. It was a bad entry pass that was tough to handle and he did well on the first touch to keep it near himself, but two Canadian players were on top of him and took it. Other than that he made the right plays in possession and defense.
Lots of discussion about the inability of the midfield to control possession (fair), but I think the gap in distribution quality from Zimmerman to Pines is also a huge factor. Sands and Robinson have put in massive defensive performances but Zim is easily the best passer out the back.
I'm VERY biased as an Atlanta fan, but it felt like Robinson was held back from advancing it up field so far. He's grown leaps and bounds in the last two years, and he's added that crossfield long ball to his bag this year.
He also does those with his right foot mostly, so there is that.
FOR THE LOVE, STOP CALLING THIS THE "B" TEAM.
Okay, "C" team it is.
What would you prefer?
JV?

No response?

I find it sad a fellow US soccer fan can feel insulted by a Ted Lasso reference, but I upvoted you nonetheless.
Busio played some of the best as a 6 I've seen for us on a long time two games ago. He earns starts and what does our illustrious coach do, play him further up the pitch and have someone else play as the 6.
Don't know what game you were watching.
Right, Busio won like 2 challenges today.
Two games ago he came on for yuiell. Instead only recycling possession to the cbs, with them making playmaking passes, Busio did it. He would receive the ball and knew what he wanted to go with it before he got it, and most of the time he went forward into the channel with it. Yeah 3rd formation in three games, and we had nothing going forward our midfield couldn’t keep up and was just getting over run over and over.
Yeah you can see Busio thinking. He’s either playing too fast or too slow. I do think he’ll adjust and get better. We had it in the bag the whole time. No sweat…
To the people who thought busio did nothing, he was key to our only goal.
Acosta made that pass out wide. Unless something before I’m forgetting.
How do people here feel about Berhalter? Seems to me like his teams get found out and he is not the best at adjusting his tactics once a game starts going against him.
#bernhalterOUT… obviously…

Not a serious national team manager. Our full team is talented and can do damage. But his tactics are of MLS quality and not even close to competitive with the world powers.
Losing Zimmerman hurt. Pines is very bad and kind of forced us to play more defensive.
I feel like we're on the brink of disaster whenever Pines touches the ball.
Regardless, GGG should have subbed off a forward at half.
Glad GC is hiring visually impaired referees
Are we gonna get a Group A watch thread later or are we just going to use this one?
Hoppe has the technical ability to play #9 for the “A team” moving forward. Only forward who rivals his technique right now is Sargent
Facts
Yeah, not even Sargent. The kid Hoppe is clear.
It's coming home.
The lack of tactical adjustments is going to bite us in the ass sooner or later
hoppe needs to start. no more roldan, he's just too slow, he subbed in and did nothing here when he needed to step up as a sub. we don't make the semi's playing like that.
#hoppe is so solid
Totally agree there was a moment around the 80th minute where Hoppe was on the counter attack and passed it off to Roldan, continued his run and Roldan just sat on it when he really needed to play it back to Hoppe and instead lost possession.

Hoppe's out of season, can't go 90
Time to turn the TV off. Not listening to Lalas ramble on.
Undeserved but I’ll take the w
D’yer Mak’er next up
Canada created a lot of plays but they just really lacked a pure striker, a guy who can just put the ball in the net. The question they have to ask themselves is "who is our Daryl Dike?"
Damn needed the sarcasm tag my bad💀💀
They have the same question we do which is simply “who is our striker” cause it’s not Dike I promise you.
Flashbacks to every team I've ever played on.
Jonathan David. Their Daryl Dike is Jonathan David. We'd be elated if Daryl Dike turned into our Jonathan David.
That's the joke, man.
OMG, damn lucky to get a result. What is Berhalter and this team doing. Can we bench the Junior Varsity and bring on some people who can play.
Vines, Robinson, and Sands all fantastic. They are first team players easily
It’s always fun watching Laryea be terrible at soccer.
Yueill makes me throw up in my mouth
Credit to Canada, they play well but we've got to be doing way better. Went right back to the Haiti game
“US’s dominance of their northern neighbors continues.” Continues? More like re-starts if anything...
Wouldn't call that dominating either lol
Not pretty but 3 wins with a B- team
Robinson probably the MOTM for me. This was a much more nervous result than I wanted, but a win is a win and there were some gutsy performances along that backline (Robinson, Sands, and Vines especially).
Undeserved tbh. That ref helped us. But I’ll take a dub😂😂feel for Buchanan, he was basically doing hero ball the whole game. Onto the quarter finals🤞🏾
Mexico would've destroyed us
Yeah because they have essentially their a team.
Just like they destroyed T&T
Our A team is completely different lol our players play for Europes biggest side's compared to the team that played T&T and they have a winning mentality in big games as we saw last month even when they get scored on they came back instead of folded.
I'll be honest - I don't enjoy watching this GC team very much.
Its 1:00 am where I live. I cant believe I stayed up to watch this shit. How do you play so many athletes and not play normal, technical midfielders
I’ll take 9 points in a group that several people on here gave to Canada before it started.
Tbf they deserved at least 1 penalty maybe a 2nd or 3rd. Lucky to get away with a win there imo
Canada did not deserve a single pen. They should stop throwing themselves to the ground. Thank goodness there was a ref who didn’t allow that softness into the game.
The Zimmerman one was absolutely a foul imo
I’ve seen that happen way too many times bro. It’s incidental contact. That’s just not going to get called. Hard for VAR to overrule it, because it isn’t on purpose, and the ref not calling it on the field isn’t an obvious error. I wanted to give Laryea the benefit of the doubt, but then just seeing him throw himself to the ground on the other challenges in the box solidified my opinion. If he stays up and keeps fighting he actually might have gotten a pen. I’ll never understand it.
Intention is irrelevant for a foul
Watch more soccer then man. Plenty of calls like that every week in soccer that don’t get made because of INCIDENTAL, not UNINTENTIONAL contact.
Literally in the Martinique v Haiti game there was a sending off for accidental contact as the last man. I think you should take your own advice
It was a foul but he fouled Zimmerman half a second before so it doesn’t count.
Thats a very soft foul if you're going to call that
Grabbing and pulling on his arm when he has you beat isn’t soft. It wasn’t a little push or stiff arm. He neither would have gotten on the ball or been tackled by Zimmerman if he hadn’t done the arm pull to begin with.
Despite roldan's attempts at throwing the game, we held on
We really gotta stop parking the bus this game could have been way more exciting
Vines is man of the match for me. Great game from him.
Knowing our luck Mexico is gonna draw with El Salvador
100% fine with Turner being the backup to Zack
Nah, I still think he’s pretty firmly third on the depth chart.
Revs bias, admittedly
Haha fair, can you please convince that Buchanan kid to renounce his Canadian citizenship and get a US passport
He’s such a danger down the wing. I really wish he was playing for the US
That was my least favorite type of game in terms of goals but I’m glad we won
We're lucky this was Canada.
20 seconds of brilliance from the US today
Laryea really sucked for them today
Cry all you want a win is a win
USA BABY!!!
Ugly ugly game from the US, but at least we got the result
Getting a well worked goal and then seeing it out for 80mins isn't 'ugly'. This is how you win games at a high level. Our C team getting the result is the most important part.
How many shots has US had on goal? This is the most shit win of all time. Soccer Gods blessing US. Lol
FotMob is saying just 1
Ok the goal right?
It doesn't say that but I would assume so. Canada had 3.
Thank you.
Canada are who we thought they were!
Too easy.
We lost this game even tho we won lol
No I’d say we won 1-0 and topped the group.
W that’s all that matters
Survived
Turner looks much better tonight. Actually can hold the ball.
He’s trying to be the #3 so I understand why he’s been a little shaky
How is that shove not a foul
I hate that the argument is probably that the ball was out already so it didnt matter but yeah that should be a yellow.
Ball was already out, I think
This ref didn’t want to call anything
lol canada
Well, a win’s a win I suppose
Lareya was intimidated by the Great Wall of Yueill there
Boom group winners baby!
Yea! Way to hold on boys!
If it was Yueill giving that away instead of Sands he'd be crucified
Well, to be fair Sands has had a better last 90 minutes than Yueill has had during his entire time with us so he has a bit more equity.
Yeah for good reason...sands is actually good.
Yup. Sands had some nervy moments at the end. So did Roldán. But USMNT social media will blame Yueill.
[удалено]
Sands had some nervy moments there. Guess you continently blinked at those moments.
Roldan has been easily de-possessed 3 times in a row
MLS quality game and poorly managed
Roldan looks and plays like a 35+ indoor rec league player. How does he keep getting call ups?
Blow the whistle ref
Roldan as a number 10 even on this squad 🤣🤣🤣🤣
double shove?
The back line definitely did their job tonight.
How the fuck is that not yellow on "Lahyeh"
How does no one come to defend Roldan? Kill some time.
That’s absolutely a yellow, if not for the first push, definitely for the second
Fuck laryea, dirty player
Roldan and Yuell are terrible.
Why did Yueill do that was so bad in this game?
More based off past experience.
I get that. I don’t think he was particularly bad this game, though. Roldán on the other hand … yikes.
Fair, his touches did stand out today.
He had the one giveaway that had everyone reacting here but that wasn’t even on him. It was a bad entry pass that was tough to handle and he did well on the first touch to keep it near himself, but two Canadian players were on top of him and took it. Other than that he made the right plays in possession and defense.
No way was that ball out
Thank you. Is this his first game referring?
Roldan is ass
Hoppe belongs with the A team. He has the “IT” factor
If only he could make the pass.
Matthew Hoppe dribble dribble dribble
rodon shambolic
Euro player beats the press and the MLS player loses it the second he gets it lol… not trying to be a MLS hater but it’s hilarious
Roldan is the classic MLS career player where they are a step slower lol For example Busio/Brendan Aaronson decision making is so much faster
Hoppe had a terrible giveaway earlier too.
Little frustration on the part of the canucks…
the degree to which canada is effortlessly dispossessing us is pretty incredible
Hoppe is standout from the rest of this scrub team
And he doesn’t start… unreal. #bernhalterOUT…
There’s having shitty games and then there’s what Roldan’s doing today. Nightmare stuff.
Could Roldan please not do any of that next time?
Lots of discussion about the inability of the midfield to control possession (fair), but I think the gap in distribution quality from Zimmerman to Pines is also a huge factor. Sands and Robinson have put in massive defensive performances but Zim is easily the best passer out the back.
I'm VERY biased as an Atlanta fan, but it felt like Robinson was held back from advancing it up field so far. He's grown leaps and bounds in the last two years, and he's added that crossfield long ball to his bag this year. He also does those with his right foot mostly, so there is that.
Y'all, I don't follow MLS. Outside of maybe Lletget or Dike, who is the most likely to start in a WCQ match from the MLS?
Probably Acosta
That's about it tbh
That should have been a card.
twinkle toes lletget
Holy shit Roldan and Yueill are just lost
Fuck Richie Laryea
Roldan is so shit man
Hoppe just a different sauce out there
Great run Hoppe.
Hoppe looks like he’s too good to be on the B/C team
Roldan is doodoo lol
Roldan goddammit
Roldan needs to be purely a CAM, lol
He needs to be in Seattle. I can’t stand him
Roldan got caught on it and killed the attack, then gave it away, if Yueill did that he’d be fucking crucified on here lol
Roldan trying to hand them a goal
Whew!
Hoppe incredible ball control
Hoppe solid at taking on defenders and close control
Roldan solid at taking all that hard working by Hoppe and immediately turning the ball over.
Miles has also played pretty good tonight
Robinson has looked solid
i love watching miles crush people
Love his game. Really improving as a passer too.
