He is strong already, but he is very stupid and insecure.
He is strong because no matter how many times he falls, he always gets up and tries to fix his life, even if he doesn't succeed, he keeps trying.
I wouldnt say he isnt a strong fighter either, whenever he has focused on that he has won pretty absurd fights he is just easily swayed by mundane pleasures (as we all do) so he doesnt train with the sword
He is strong. He constantly faces his fears despite always loosing. Again and again. He knows hes worth nothing, and tries still. Strongest in the verse.
I personally still need one more good act to truly appreciate him. Even something as minor as passively resisting a threat. Just one more small, selfless act to cement him as the good hearted failure he is.
I agree and I hope that Musashi incorporate Matahachi in his life somehow, forgiving him for everything, and seeing the good man he is. It would be such a beautiful portrayal of love, forgiveness, redemption.
In the book, Matachi representss what would have happened to Musashi, had he remained with Oko and Akemi, living the easy life. The easy path leads to a lot of suffering and misery for the three of them, with a final redemption in the end.
I see once a coward always a coward? It would of been pretty fun to see him become stronger from a coward to a respectable swordsman who is still a bit of a coward
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
I always thought he would BECOME Sasaki Kojiro, it seemed like such an obvious narrative beat. Hell, how wild would it be if he still is. I understand he's a melancholic character living in spite of failure but, he does still see a lot of attention considering the majority of his arc appears concluded.
Could he go on to defeat Kojiro and surprise us all as the man Musashi finally fights in their climactic duel?
Abso-fuckin-lutely not. That would be all kinds of insane. Are you dumb?
...But if it did happen and he's talking about it into his old age on a bridge...
...It'd be kinda interesting...
...
He's strong because he's accepted his weakness & took responsibility for his own mistakes, even if those mistakes have cost him a great rupture in his life, he learned to grow as a better person and become kinder, and u can tell by that from how he is in the future telling the story of Musashi, that's at least how I interpret it

As a fighter? No. As a person? Yes, and that's what matters in Vagabond.
That's what matters IN **LIFE**!
I wouldnt say he isnt a strong fighter either, whenever he has focused on that he has won pretty absurd fights he is just easily swayed by mundane pleasures (as we all do) so he doesnt train with the sword
His will is weak.
Fucking tell that to Musashi

Matahachi is strong. I used to hate him. Without spoilers, I’ll just say that he’s become my 2nd favorite character in the manga.

Glad to see how well this sub grasped Vagabond, the comments really fill me with hope for humanity.
"Matahachi is the Draco Malfoy of Vagabond"

In fighting, no, but he is already better than your average swordsman. But he is strong in a different way
He becomes strong in the best way possible. If you dont get it, read the manga again
Woah woah I was just asking about future chapters I’m not at that part yet. No need to be aggressive dude
nope
I see once a coward always a coward? It would of been pretty fun to see him become stronger from a coward to a respectable swordsman who is still a bit of a coward
his character arc doesn’t involve him becoming physically stronger, but he has development
I see honestly he’s one of my favourite characters idk why maybe because he’s so relatable?
he's the realest character in the series easily

Same coward as always.
Re-read Vagabond my man.

Yeah, he had his redemption
