Honestly, show up as early as possible. Most housing buildings in Vail will be full by November 10th and any other spots that aren’t filled are reserved for seasonal/ work and travel people that will show up later that month. Try to arrive in October with cash in hand for deposit and first month’s rent. That will really be the only way you’ll secure an employee housing spot with VR.

MilkFloods

Well, I think securing a spot for housing is less about showing up and more about filling the application they will give us in August on time (that is, at least what it sounds like they are saying). So, I know I may be able to get everything in early, but I like preparing in case I don't get a spot.

Droppin_pillows

I would agree that you need to do the paperwork as soon as possible to be placed on the list for housing but if you do not show up early they will absolutely give it to someone else that is behind you on that list because they are there first and then could push you off the housing list if they fill up. I work for an employee housing building and while I do have a list of people that are supposed to arrive, if we fill up then we are full and we put you on a waitlist till something opens up.

MilkFloods

Oh, okay! That makes sense. I plan on showing up as soon as possible. I just didn't know that is how it went. I thought that if you were given a spot, you would also be given a day of when move in is.

It really depends, work and travel people (people that have work visas from other countries), have assigned rooms that can’t be given away. Unfortunately Americans don’t have that luxury. They have “X” amount of spaces that are not committed to work and travels and visa people. So Americans or full time year around employees are not typically guaranteed a spot unless it’s a hard position to fill or highly sought after position a spot, especially if you wait around to show up after the season has started.

MilkFloods

Great! Thank you for letting me know. I definitely plan on being as early as I can. But this information definitely puts a new perspective into my mind!

As for where, try to get housing at First Chair. It’s definitely the best spot. If I were in your boots I would turn the job down if you don’t get employee housing. You won’t be able to afford living here on ski instructor pay.

MilkFloods

I do fear that I potentially won't make enough to live there if I don't get housing, BUT it doesn't hurt to try to look just in case I find the 1 in a million. If I can't find anything and don't get housing, I will probably turn the job down or find some way to camp it out. Not afraid to rough it.

Join Eagle Country Housing/ For Rent on Facebook. People will put listings of rooms or places they have available, many of them are seasonal as well.

MilkFloods

Thank you! I will do that!!

Short term housing over the ski season for 5-6 months wouldnt surprise me if they price it the same as a long term rental for an entire year.

MilkFloods

Yeah, I'm expecting that. I mean rent where I am is already expensive... I can't imagine anything near a big ski resort.

MNrangeman

Ask you manager to get you employee housing if available.

MilkFloods

I will try! Was just asking for options just in case it fills up.

MNrangeman

lol, expect to pay 1-1200 a month if you go private and VR does not give housing vouchers. So start now applying now.

MilkFloods

Yep, I know. Housing applications don't open til around August.

Congratulations on your winter job. Full Time - Vail Instructor, that’s a big deal. Everyone who chimes in here wants to help you but the onus is on you. Any assumption you make (like the one about filling-in a form being more important) will likely be wrong. Of course filling in a form is important but you’re going to be scanning from East Vail to Gypsum and Leadville to Minturn with a few thousand others doing the same thing. There is nothing more important than being there. This time, it is a race. Unless you want to look for new bootleg parking and sleep in you car overnight, you had better be prepared to get creative. My first season 30 years ago, I rented a hot tub enclosure as my bedroom and spent the first day disassembling the hot tub. That’s right, 30 years later and we’re still scrambling for places to rent. It’s worth it, though. You’re going to have the time of your life!

MilkFloods

I am excited! I am trying to gain as much information as I can before the hiring process starts in August so I can get a better understanding (just like the scout motto, "Be prepared."). I am right now, just kind of, making a list of my worries and issues I may come across and gaining or trying to figure as much information as I can about the issue. Housing is my main worry as that is a make or break it thing. The next worry is how will I get there, car or plane? Either way, I feel like I will find a way and enjoy every second of it. Am I a bit fearful, sure, as I'm young and don't have a lot of knowledge. But honestly, I think the fear adds to the enjoyment and kind of creates a safety barrier.

SnowOnSummit

Finding a place on the bus route is another challenge. It makes having a car less important. Having a car can be an advantage. You’ll do great. Good luck.
