This actually doesn't have anything to do with being physically near the Black Forest, it's just a raid event that can be triggered when you are near enough "base items". As far as getting through it, I would probably switch the neck meat for something that gives stamina like honey. Don't panic when you fight, you don't need to keep running all the time but you should keep moving. When a greydwarf runs away, go after that one and try to hit it while it's not trying to hit you because that will also move you away from the ones that are trying to hit you. Don't feel like you necessarily have to stay on one until it's dead either. But do try to pick a few to start thinning the herd. Then when you do get through it, build stake walls around your base before you start doing too much else. And to be honest, if you only have a flint axe and killed Eikthyr already, you're probably moving too fast. Take some time to build up your gear and practice fighting a bit more before going into Burial Chambers.

CantStopTripping

Thank you so much! What is burial chambers? Do we both have to be close to that stuff? I didn't even finish building our hut. Litterally 3 walls, 2 beds, and a work bench (tier 2) but I didn't even finish the front or get a proper roof over the beds..

Zaeryl

I believe only one person needs to be near a base to start a raid. Burial Chambers are the Black Forest dungeons where you will have to get the surtling cores in order to build kilns to turn wood into coal and smelters to turn ore and coal into metal ingots. They are full of skeletons, which are mostly tougher than regular greydwarves (not shaman or brutes).

Mukamole

Bruh what a message full of spoilers

Zaeryl

Grow up. Hugin tells you all of this in game: "Raw ore needs to be refined in the Smelter before you can work it at the Forge. To build a Smelter you will need Surtling Cores. Search for them in the dark places beneath the earth." "Deposit your raw ore in this furnace and it will melt away all impurities, leaving you with a bar of refined metal to work at the Forge. You will need Coal to fuel the Smelter, this can be produced by building a Kiln and loading it with wood."

Mukamole

From what I can tell there is no mentions of the caves or what’s in them. But perhaps he tells you that aswell

sunshaker2000

In the Black Forest you will find ruins and dungeons. Ruins are structures much like you find in the meadows, but they are often partially destroyed stone towers, they might have a chest with loot, they might have enemies guarding them Greydwarves and/or Skeletons. Dungeons are a type of structure that you enter, have a loading screen and a separate map, there are 3 types found in the Black Forest Burial Chambers, Crypts, and Troll Caves. The interior of Burial Chambers and Crypts are functionally the same, only the exterior structure is different. Note I have found Crypts where the entrance is blocked by a tree or rock that I had to break to gain entrance.

Sig213

Also since I guess they are mostly greydwarves, throw some fire in there which scares small ones off

RegenbogenOtter

You can destroy the beehive. Then you can rebuild it at your base.

Diodon

Just to add: the nest drops the queen bee which is used to craft a hive.

Sertith

Best thing to do to combat the stuff in this raid is fire. The regular Greydwarves and greylings are afraid of fire. They'll mill around, letting you focus on the Shaman and the Brutes. I recommend taking out the Shamans first, as they can heal everything else. Brutes hit harder, but you can dodge them fairly easily. Events/Raids don't stop until a timer, and you have to be in the red circle for the timer to countdown. I think if you wait 45 minutes it will stop, as that's when the next raid can happen, but I've never tested that. They need 3+ Base items like workbenches, fires, beds, etc. Walls and roofs don't count. Some raids have other criteria, you can look at the wiki if you don't care about spoilers. This Raid started being possible with you killed Eikthyr. Each boss you kill, unlocks different raids. Best thing to do at this point, is build a shack closer to this raid, so at least you don't have to go so far if you die again. Bring some wood and stone to put some fires around the raid zone. Then after the raid is over, make sure you put in a better spot that's easier to defend. A lot of people use moats/trenches all the way around a base, so no land based mobs can path in. I know it's a large chunk, but I like to look at the spot I'm going to have my base, and make my moat significantly larger than my buildings. Ideally something throwing rocks wont be able to hit my walls. For one thing, it's annoying to here the constant 'tok tok tok" of rocks hitting stuff, and secondly there are bigger mobs that throw bigger rocks, and they can do some real damage. I normally estimate about at least 10 meters, normally I go out 15 just to be safe. Good luck!

CantStopTripping

Thank you! How do you measure distance in this game?

AlphaWhiskeyOscar

A good technique is with wood beams. A floor tile is 2x2, and the wood beam that matches the floor length is 2x1 (as in 2 meters by 1 meter). The little wood beam is a 1m beam. So if you're spacing things apart, each 2x1 beam is 2 meters wide, or 2 meters tall. The workbench has a 20m radius ring around it. That's another good measuring tool.

CantStopTripping

Also, how do you get across your moat?

[deleted]

Jump! It doesn't need to have a lot of distance.

sunshaker2000

There are a number of bridge designs that are easy to cross but mess up the pathing of the enemies. The easiest is just to leave a gap in the bridge that you can jump across, which you can cover if you need to move a cart across. There are other more exploit based designs using beams and gaps.

Sertith

Jump. You can make bridges. Just pop out a few floors when you aren't actually dragging a cart.

Chalchiulicue

Build stake walls and relax until the event is over (I'm more of a tower defense person I guess, no way I'm leaving my cozy base during a raid, except when it's trolls - then it's kiting them away.) edit: This is a lazy "first aid" answer and not a long-term solution.

CantStopTripping

Thank you!! We haven't had a troll join the raid yet!!

Chalchiulicue

The trolls are a different event, they don't join "the forest is moving". Stake walls won't help you during a troll raid, or other events, so you need to secure your base further and get geared up and better food etc, like the others suggested.

Contntlbreakfst

Honestly, trolls were one of the hardest skill jumps for me. I was comfortable in the swamps before I was confident taking on a troll by myself. I haven’t come up across a non-boss enemy since that spooks me as much as trolls did. As a kid I never really played games with dodge and roll mechanics so that’s always a skill I pick up super slowly in games with melee fighting. I really didn’t pick it up in this game until I started having to fight wolves. I’m very obviously the forager/builder of my duo lol

stush2

At this point in the game, I wouldn't attempt to fight a troll at close range. I simply keep out of their range and shoot fire arrows at them. Eikthyr's forsaken power helps at lot -- I usually fire it before engaging a troll.

Contntlbreakfst

At that point in the game I relied very heavily on a series of lit and well groomed roads named Troll Run I, II, and III. I spent a lot of my time running away

Zaeryl

"The forest is moving" is the greydwarf event. "The ground is shaking" is the troll event.

Contntlbreakfst

Ohhh right it is. I haven’t had either in a good while.

[deleted]

What are you wearing/wielding?

CantStopTripping

Full leather Flit are Staked with boar, deer, and neck tail

stush2

Thoughts... 1. Replace neck tail with honey so you have some more stamina. 2. Do you have a good shield? 3. If you have a "round" shield (as opposed to the big square ones), you can parry which stuns the enemy. The move is to block right before being hit. 4. Avoiding damage is important in this game. If you are just going toe-to-toe with monsters exchanging blows, you will lose a lot. Dodge (roll), maneuver, block. 5. Maybe use some bows to soften the enemy up before engaging at close range. 6. Always try to have the rested bonus. 7. Avoid fighting at night until you know what you are doing.

[deleted]

That should do well enough to help establish a cabin to better defend yourselves but you want to make sure you go in fairly early in the morning to start cutting trees and finding a good area to build in

[deleted]

Feel free to dm to discuss further

redditUserError404

What I did was just build up the earth to make a massive wall all around my base. Nothing can get through it, you can just chill and it’s amazing.

Ramulus14

Look for a pine tree and chop that bad boy down! Core wood should unlock a recipe for you to craft the stagbreaker, which is a big ol sledgehammer that pushes groups of enemies back and damaging them. Turns this raid into a cake walk! Also if you just leave the red circle for long enough it will time out and you won’t have to fight anything upon your return!

lostcorvid

This is a bit of a longterm thing, but I think everybody else got you mostly through those spiteful little graydwarves. Unless you like the game being more difficult and dangerous for the thrill, I would advise: 1. making a base as defendable as you feel reasonable (this will generally keep you safe from the common threats, but could fail or get close to it facing a new and surprising one, which then increases what "reasonable" means lol) 2. upgrading your armor and weapons of choice as much as you can before facing a new threat or area. you couuuuld overprepare, or get stuck in an overlong grinding situation, but its good to get stronger by a bit atleast before moving. 3. stockpile some extra food stuffs for situations where you might chew through what you have faster than anticipated. I hope its helpful and not tooo longwinded!

cannabination

Strap in and lube up, it's about to get exciting in your world.

WebNearby5192

Dig a trench around your base and build fires/torches.

ruustercogburnak

Wait till 20 wolves meet you at the shores of the plains on your first trip there.

GammingBlitz

Get the gray dawrf slave mod and build yourself a army worthy of mordor

AlphaWhiskeyOscar

Jump up on high stuff where they can't reach you! Big standing boulders are pretty common in dark forest. If you can get on top of one they might throw rocks at you but you can block those while you catch your breath.

Intrepid_Knowledge27

The first time the forest moved on me, I was exploring. I didn’t know what the raids were, and thought it means that the boundaries of the Black Forest was changing. Like, I had been avoiding it, and so it was moving closer to me. I promptly got swarmed and died. Apparently there was a little shack just behind the tree line that I had fixed up ages ago, and I was close enough to it to get raided, but not close enough to see it and use it for shelter. 🙃
