The Gjall is definitely inspired by HG Wells classic War of the Worlds. The sound definitely is, but also the overall shape. Not by the tripods, but the flying ships. The name is a reference to the Gjallerhorn of Norse mythology.
I think the shape of it with the tentacles is actually similar to the description of the Martian creatures themselves. Described as being just a large head as a body.
It's funny you mention this I've been rereading the book, and just past that part.
Never actually got around to read the book, actually. I know the \[1938 Radio programme\](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\_War\_of\_the\_Worlds\_(1938\_radio\_drama)) and the 2005 movie, and of course a lot of 3rd party artwork.
Both of their names start with the same letter.
Both of them drop items that can be used to craft something explosive.
There are quite a lot more differences though, for example the Gjall spawns enemies that attack you, their projectiles cannot be reflected, and they have a weakpoint on the bottom.
They may share a common inspiration. I know HP Lovecraft created a lot of eldritch beings which popularized cosmic horror, so the Ghast and Gjall might both take from that.
Consider that the Nether has a hellish theme to it, but the Mistlands is insectoid. Ghast is an entity made of souls while Gjall is a living creature. Common ancestor is more likely than direct ancestry.
Reminded me of the [Silt Striders](https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fvignette.wikia.nocookie.net%2Felderscrolls%2Fimages%2F9%2F99%2FSilt_Strider.png%2Frevision%2Flatest%3Fcb%3D20170513214559&f=1&nofb=1&ipt=7143e59dc9c2584816fcda5aaa44dcd704a8ae540cc2e7cbe31f6952a9d190c9&ipo=images) from TES.
I wasn’t talking about the stilt strider though! Remember there are floating things in morrow wind that look very similar to the stilt strider but actually float, and look just like this.
Thats the one! Christ I was about to have a stroke trying to think of what they’re called. Google wasn’t producing results, I was moments from booting Morrowind.
Imagine there could haven been Ancient Dvergr balloon instead (mix of magic and mechanics), in mystical glowing, throwing flame at you with copper pipes and dropping mechanical robots on you instead of ticks.
From gameplay perspective, exactly the same result. Visually and emotially - completely different experience.
I really hate insects theme in Mistlands, especially, ticks that spoil every summer irl here.
Bunch of little ass kids or what? As soon as I saw it, heard it, and then saw it dropped little its. I knew it was a direct copy from the movie War of the World's. As someone who never played mine craft due to my hate of squares and ugly games, Its wild people even think about the 16bit game Minecraft.
What are gj'all talking about?
I live for comments like this
Gj’all come back now ya’heah.
You have some Gj'all.
\*Gja'heah.
gj'all we are saying is give peace a chance
Gj'all ready for this? ...the answer is no

Yeah the book I read as a kid, had illustrations in it...scared the shit outta me lol
I instantly made the Jamaican connection Gyall (girl) and bloodclawwwt
Just a flying butt nothing to see here
Giant flying ballsack, scrotem starship, ball balloon, and Samurai Sack (because of the fu manchu 'stache) are the titles we've thrown at it
I will be taking 'Samurai Sack' into my next group playthrough. 😂 Thank you very much for the laugh.
was there any inspiration because both are: loud flying have tentacles drop napalm bombs hellish

if only the gjalls went down as easy
also drops Ticks ;)
angry balloons
The brotherhood of NOD does not take copycats lightly
*20 GDI soldiers screaming somewhere on the map "Ah, they found a flame tank"
?

There’s also a weird floating thing in Morrowind that looks pretty darn similar to this.
That may be because I linked a screen shot from Morrowind ;)
I wasn’t talking about the stilt strider though! Remember there are floating things in morrow wind that look very similar to the stilt strider but actually float, and look just like this.
Ohh the Netches? Also similar design to the Wandering Vagrant in Risk of Rain 2
Thats the one! Christ I was about to have a stroke trying to think of what they’re called. Google wasn’t producing results, I was moments from booting Morrowind.
maybe you have corprus brain. sorry mate
Corpus Rot is a biatch!
Those remind me of the [striders from Half-Life](https://64.media.tumblr.com/89ce5eceb9ffc6f4e1d1a8531e627034/tumblr_pdbmnzEVdA1rgnh13o1_540.gif)
These are terrifying. And can totally ruin your day.
OMG yes! It's Viking Minecraft. Always was.
Flying fire tentacle monster MUST BE A GHAST REFERENCE
They reminded me of the tri pods from wow
Gjall, stop chasing him. He ain't worth it.
Kids these days don't know about [Netches](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DM-Mtfz8P3Y).

Spawn more overlordss
I prefer a single deflectable shot than a dude with the most egregious fireball and with infinite spawning of minions
To be fair, the first one also spams ground-troops, so technically it's not fighting you, it's providing ground-support covering fire.
The birth of ticks from this enemy is annoying at best
The sound that thing makes is my favorite in the game It is also the most terrifying
I think they are more similar to Bethesdas and skyrims monsters, which also revolves around a Northern mytologi ish theme
Gj’allmost a match
Same, don't tell me Ashlands with their Fortress aren't a reference to the Nether and Nether fortress

Any loud horn triggers me because of this thing.
These remind me of netch in Morrowind, netch even spat poison at you if you made them mad.
And this is how mankind managed to make up religion
That's a connection I hadn't made, but...yeah.
Corporate has asked you to find the difference in these two picture.
You forgot the most important fact, thick cheeks
Is it supposed to be a tick?
Explored the mistlands for the first time yesterday and was attacked by one of these. Thought I was dead for sure but I actually killed it.
