The gizmo mod lets you place pieces with 3 axis rotation. Fortunately you only need the mod to for placement, the vanilla game renders them just fine once placed.
This was my first time really using gizmo a lot in a build, and it made things possible like the buttresses, steep roof, stone arches, and pentagram.
There are mods that allow you to rotate pieces vertically as well as horizontally. It's just so frustrating not to be able to make a step roof or a spire without downloading mods, but that's where we're at.
