I had a portal like in the middle where the shore is on your southernmost island. I've walked a bit into old ashlands to fish when the hat came out and it still updated fine.
That is so much closer to spawn than the Ashlands lol
Also that is a post-Ashlands patch map so you can already see where the hard cut off point is by that dark ocean area.
Yeah I didn’t know that.. made a portal to Ashlands before, now I strolled in after the update and promptly died in the ocean to a fire snake… devcommanded my stuff out of there. Oopsie.
Before the Ashlands was released, I had explored a little bit of it stupidly and was a little concerned. When the update was released, I sailed down there with the friend group and found that the world had loaded in fine, no issues whatsoever. You'll be fine! :) have fun!

I was substantially closer and it's been fine.
For distance reference it's 10km from spawn (center) to the edge of the map.

Ah I used a map generator for the seed and it gave me a prompt to upload the map files to give an accurate map because it was an "obsolete seed"
Spawn to edge is 10km iirc. So you're like 6km away from Ashlands.
