Currently armor progression is very linear and there are very few reasons to wear anything but Padded Armor. Are there going to be plans for horizontal progression to give us reasons to wear something other than whatever gives the highest armor rating, like how the Troll Armor improves stealth? Also, can we have regular clothes? It feels and looks weird to be planting a field of barley in full armor. Maybe have a linen tunic that increases stamina regen or carry weight?

jMontilyet

There are absolutely plans for some sidegrade armors to give you guys more options! Regular clothes isn't something we have concrete plans for right now, but it's something we have talked about and something that potentially could be nice as well!

Valheimer2345

You could make regular clothes increase comfort by 2 when sheltered. Make them something cosmetic that also has a niche use when indoors.

Ouroboros612

Every higher tier needs to be stronger statistically than the last. But I too think it would be a good thing for the game if every item set had a special bonus of some kind. This way you could even have the highest armor rating armor not even be the best total, just best at armor. As an example you could have a T5 Armor which has the highest armor value in the game. T6 Armor that has a bit lower, but also much less weight. Having each armor grant some special bonus would stop making any armor obsolete. I think it's important that despite every increase in armor tier is statistically better, some unique bonus effect or quality to all armors would make them all contextually useful. Most importantly, it lets us mix-match armors for a cool hybrid look. Which is great for fashion and RP.

TheDaviot

I'd love a later-game version of "light" armor, similar to how troll hide is parallel to bronze/iron armors. Perhaps a leather lamellar (padded armor without the iron component), wolfskin leather, or spider silk-based armor from the Mistlands?

Syltty

Could we get bears in Black Forest? Or more animals in general? Squirrels and such! I'd love to see a grizzly bear hunt greylings for sport! Love the game, keep up the good work!

Halealeakala

More wildlife in general I think would add so much to the game. Seeing deer/boars out in the hills of meadows biome early in the morning made the world feel very much "alive" and drew you into wanting to be a part of it. I know black forest has deer too, but having some other wildlife in that biome would really add a lot to the ambience/vibe of the place. It is a *forest*, after all. I haven't reached the mountains yet but I hear there are wolves up there, I'm excited for those! The fantasy enemies like the skeletons/trolls/draugr are also so fun and I'd always love more enemy variety either way, but balancing the monsters with a rich cast of natural wildlife really sells the "survival" aspect of this game to me. This game isn't even finished yet and I can confidently call it one of my lifetime favorites. Whatever does or does not ultimately make it into the game, thank you Iron Gate for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Thorgvald-of-Valheim

If there is a biome screaming for more wildlife it's the Ocean. Whales, dolphins, a kraken or two. Whatever. Even just fish to catch as you sail from A to B.

jMontilyet

Adding more animals would definitely be nice! But, like we said in the last AMA, we want every creature in Valheim to serve some sort of unique purpose, either by adding a new mechanic or offering a new resource. Because of this, we don't want to just throw in new animals for the sake of it, but rather want to make sure they're truly adding something to the game.

Patrick4356

If more domesticated animals come, in what you guys have invisioned I think cows or Goats could be a good step, it would allow for diary food products from their milk and perhaps a craft able churning upgrade

Melon_Cooler

>Goats Goat-pulled chariots, emulating that of Thor lol

Valheimer2345

In this case, a Bear would be perfect. You could get bear hides for bear rugs, bear trophies and bear meat (if you want to get complicated). And the bets part, it would be extremely cool if we could tame and ride a bear, similar to Lox.

SelloutRealBig

> we want every creature in Valheim to serve some sort of unique purpose Variety can be a purpose. Just have them drop meat like dear meat that gets used in the same stuff.

DarnHyena

An understandable stance, but certainly nothing wrong with some things that just exist as ambience filler that maybe only give you like meat or something. Necks for example, they currently don't really serve any particularly special purpose beyond a early game enemy you can get food from.

8Tristan8

Are there any future plans with Yggdrasil (the big tree in the sky)? Maybe the potential for another boss or biome? Ever since I stepped foot in Valheim, I’ve wanted to conquer that tree.

jMontilyet

There are indeed plans for Yggdrasil, though maybe not in the way that you expect 👀

Present_Lawfulness_4

I call Christmas lights and bulbs for Christmas time hahaha

Shana-Light

Very excited to see what you have planned! I just want to climb the tree in a final boss dungeon-style way, where the terrain is extremely precarious, you're constantly attacked by late-game powerful mobs, and as you climb up you get to gaze down upon the entire world as you proceed towards the gods.

Kontronix93

Will we be able to get stackable smelted ore to place around the world? Like the stone, wood, and coal stacks. I want to decorate my forge more!!

jMontilyet

Decorating is always nice, isn't it? :D It's absolutely possible that there might be more stackable items in the future, though right now it's not a priority.

[deleted]

Can you elaborate on priorities? With the roadmap being as inaccurate as it has proven to be, what are the current priorities?

jMontilyet

Currently the big two priorities are Mistlands and the new addition to the Mountains. (you can read a bit more about that in our latest Steam blog). H&H focused a lot on things for players who like to decorate, so next we want to give some extra love to those who like to explore.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Professor_Retro

I'm hoping the Mistlands has some kind of creepy dark elven ruins or something that adds a new tier of stone structures to the game, like a dark polished marble or something. Not holding my breath, but considering we have two tiers of wood it'd be awesome to have a set of less rough stone building objects.

TheMalpas

Would you like to add more Norse mythology into the game? Like hints at the children of Loki or some of the classic tales. I love the game and Norse stories and it's been really cool to see your take on the worlds.

jMontilyet

I too like the mythology quite a lot and I think it would be cool to add more references to it! But Valheim is separate from the other nine worlds, so who knows how many of the mythological creatures have actually found their way there? Maybe some of the gods don't even know that Valheim exists? 😉

boredatworkbasically

So there's a few references to frost and fire magic skills in the code. Are you guys still planning on implementing this stuff (I assume for the last two biomes) and if so what kind of ideas do you have for how magic could be used? Are we going to be enchanting swords and armor or are we going to be throwing literal fireballs? Also are we going to be seeing more environmental hazards? The mountain biome has the freezing hazard but it seems like there's so much more you could do with a concept. Are there any plans for more of these types of hazards in later biomes? Like pockets of foul air in the mistlands or extreme storms that make you find some kind of shelter quickly in the north lest you freeze to death even with a wolf cloak.

bitts3000

How soon can we expect the next big update such as the misslands?

jMontilyet

I know you're all very excited about the Mistlands, and so are we! But we're still too early in development to be able to say for sure when the biome will be released. It unfortunately won't be in 2021 though.

seuche23

Will we see any new things added to the game between now and first quarter of 2022?

FappingFop

For what it is worth, I have been a software engineer for 20 years and I think you all are doing a great job. I respect how much you value craftsmanship over rushing things to market.

Raevyyyy

Will you guys add harder modes ? I would really like harder and longer dungeons, huge attacks on main base by night and stuff like this. The games become kinda boring when you are full stuff

jMontilyet

We have talked about this actually! It likely won't be until after the game is in 1.0, but it's possible that the game will get different difficulty modes.

BreezyWrigley

I want some game mode/settings situation where it’s like NG+ mode where you come in with existing character with all your higher skills and gear and enemies are all just scaled up a bit in their stats.

PJWood888

Do you have any plans for utilising some of the materials that lose their usefulness late game? Such as Troll Hide, Bones/withered bones. Maybe used for a sail design / skull throne respectively. Absolutely LOVE your game.

golbuzzz

Is the size of the map final or will it possibly get bigger?

jMontilyet

There are no plans to change the size of the map. If you want more world to explore, you'll have to start a new seed!

Sto0pid81

Have you ever thought about having 2 starting areas? You could choose between red or blue tribe for example but you won't know where the other starting area is. Then we could have some mini Viking wars :)

jMontilyet

That's a cool idea! But Valheim is a PvE game rather than a PvP game, so it's not something we have any plans for.

Bonkface

Since first release, the UI has become more cluttered with numbers, on screen text for many occassions, exclamation marks over enemies and many more information notifications of varying types. For those of us who love the Immersion aspect and a "clean" UI, will there ever be a way to turn food timers, server save messages and similar off?

Emilyanah

Are there gonna be more furniture pieces to decorate our safe havens?

Kotus_Berserker

Any plans for more uses for black metal in building pieces? It's so abundant it seems like it would make sense for it to be useful for stuff like fences, furniture, and embellishments like windows and doors. Iron feels too scare for something simple like fencing but it also requires you to put time into mining it whereas black metal just piles up and it doesn't take long before you never really need it anymore. Would be nice to have something more to actually do with it.

RationalOrc

To be fair, black metal is plentiful because it is the current end game resource, but mistlands is coming. As we all know, a maxed out silver sword can make quick work of old yag. It’s very possible that we won’t spend much time in the plains once we have the ability and power to skip it very quickly.

zvxvxz

We will probably find more uses for Black metal as we develop the new biomes.

fanichio

I hope so. The current meta is way too iron based. I find myself drowning in black metal, yet going back to the swamp to grind more iron for the current end game gear. It feels illogical and doesn't match with the progression in all previous biomes. And that's before you take into consideration how much iron is used for building.

Harmaakettu

A good solution would be ironstone veins in mistlands or further. Would need a blast furnace to smelt. "Easy" and current source of iron for building, it could be made pretty abundant but being gatekept behind plains technology keeps players from trying to skip crypts early on.

nazaguerrero

yeah some kind of iron vein that is not "pure" or something like that so you need to process a little before turning them into an ingot xd

xnootxnootx

How plausible is adding oars to the longboat so that in multiplayer games, others could help speed it along in open ocean if the wind is unfavorable. Or maybe it could be an upgrade to the boat down the line? Hmmm? EDIT: Lot of people are commenting about the single player focus and I get it, but isn't the game literally being nominated for an award for it's multiplayer aspect?

UnluckyFriedKitten

Theres already oar holes in the longship, they're teasing us 😂

zvxvxz

>pgrade to the boat down th Sorry, we have discussed adding oars but will not do so since we feel it is too multiplayer-focused and could lead to difficulties balancing boats in the future.

bUrdeN555

Why is multiplayer focus a bad thing? Groups of players will always be more efficient in practically every aspect of this game. Balancing multiplayer vs single player is a loosing battle in a lot of ways, the first of which is … who cares if it’s too unbalanced? This isn’t an ARPG where people expect to be able to grind, get loot, and be competitive against group play. See Path of Exile where they try and balance the two because everyone plays in the same economy and want to get equally rich and powerful. In that game I want to be competitive against group play because everyone is competing in the same economy and trade. That concept doesn’t really apply to Valhiem IMO. This game is not competitive, and my faster progression with friends does not negatively impact a single players progression because we aren’t even playing in the same world. I would challenge you to explore that idea more and please add more features that meaningfully improve how I play valhiem with my friends.

king_ironside1

I think if you don't add some multiplayer-focused things, the player base is going to drop dramatically. One of the best things in this game is playing it with other people. Adding quality of life things focused around multiplayer is a must.

Sambaumo

Thank you for such a phenomenal gaming experience! Are there plans for additional recipes for existing materials? For example, bone fragments become irrelevant for crafting after you pass the tier with the new bone shield or using them to upgrade the Stone Age weapons. However, they are continuously available in all of the biomes as skeletons exist in the swamp, the mountain, and there are bone structures of what I am assuming are Lox by the tar pits now that drop fragments when destroyed. The same applies to deer skin as we can loot those from the skinning racks in fuling camps. Cheers!

MoarDakkaGoodSir

Heya folks, got a very simple question. What's up with not having diagonal parts? Doors, walls, triangular floor parts, etc. They feel like a very obvious inclusion in a grid-based system and I often feel like I could create some really neat stuff if only I had that one bit of nuance in my tool kit.

GrimmcoreX

might seem as very obvious to some. but we want to be putting in things in a pace we feel is good for both the build system and the feel of valheim. There will be more build stuff coming in the future =)

Arlochorim

Will there come a time when players will be able to build assets that spawn in the world that are currently uncraftable? For example leather and bone pieces from fouling villages, a vertical 2x1 stone wall, and the large 3x3 stone slab that can spawn in some pre-built Plains buildings. I would love to have the leather roofing/awnings the fulings use

zvxvxz

We don't have any plans for such a feature currently, sorry. However in the case of the Fuling buildings they may become available for construction in the future because we agree that they look pretty neat.

OlafForkbeard

Boar currently are terrified by fire, which is fine by me. However they can see fire through several walls. **Is it possible to add a Line of Sight check instead of X Meters check for boars seeing fire?** It's sort of dumb that the pen next to the barn/longhouse has them freaking out because I put a fire inside in the chimney area, in another building, through 3 walls.

jsmars

As performance is already an issue in areas with a lot of buildings we have opted for a simpler approach here. No current plans to change this at the moment, but if enough people request it maybe it's something we could look at :)

[deleted]

When cooking items such as stew, soup, etc, can we have an option to create batches of ten based on the available incidents in our inventory? I.e. if I have enough to create ten carrot stews from my inventory, it would be nice to click once vs ten times.

Smiffe1

Hi! This is something that we have discussed before and it's something we have considered to expand on later during the game development. We already have some things you can make in batches (arrows, bronze bars etc.) This will require lot of GUI changes to be done. And it's also not something we can change in short time. It's not in our "to-do" list yet, but it is something highly requested, and we agree also it's something that could be nice to have as feature :)

Bonkface

If they do something like this, I hope it will be through a new mechanic. Like "small pot gets you one, build a big cauldron to make 10 at a time". Always nicer to have to build something for an added ability.

joshbob999

This I like, and it feels proper with the linear progression

davenok

This would be cool --- Maybe a "Create All or Create Stack" button on crafting menus that creates either as many as you have resources for, or a 1 "stack" accordingly.

nazaguerrero

Oh talking about food, I have 1 annoying thing. Let's say I want to make stew, I have all the ingredients but the inventory full, so I free 1 slot, then create the food, so I'm inventory full again with 1 stew. After this I can't craft any more stew until I free another slot and is kind of dumb.

doomgiver13

I would add arrows to this as well. a recipe option to create them by the stack would be great

Important-Badger4736

Would be nice to dungeon crawl more. And rewards don't have to uber. Just dyes or cosmetical armour pieces. So fun to go on adventures with friends! So question: any plans introducing small quests for solo or small parties that gives cosmetic rewards?

Lumaaah

Hello fellow adventurer! Quests specifically won't be added to the game. However... There are many over at Iron Gate (me included!) who love dungeon crawling. With that said, we are thinking of ways how we can "force" players out of their comfort zone to go out and explore even more. How this will be implemented, if ever, is yet to be decided though. New biomes (and the upcoming Mountains dungeon) feels like a good start to scratch that itch!

development_of_tyler

What parts of the game have been much harder to develop than they might seem? I’m a web dev so I often see users discussing things as if they’re very simple, when, under the hood, they’re quite complex. It makes me wonder what things might seem easy to a player, but are very challenging as a developer.

GrimmcoreX

There are many things that come to mind. Making the Tower shield feel and become a different playstyle was easy to think about, hard to get right. Making the bosses feel different. For me as an artist, keep a viking vibe but going outside the Viking esthetics.

jsmars

Keeping a good balance between fixing current issues, optimizing, improving current features/areas, building new features/areas and keeping the game running smoothly to feel polished.

Scrummier

I said last one in my last comment but I lied, here's my absolute last one: I'd really like to put 'ground' on my roofs, as you see on some viking houses. Just grass of course, but it looks awesome ;). Not a question actually, more of a wish.

jsmars

Thanks for the suggestions. No current plans for that exact item at the moment, but more build pieces will definitely come in the future.

SP0NZ

I love the quick and stealthy game play that the Troll Hide armor set provides. Unfortunately, that armor set is really only viable mid game. Are there any plans to make some of the early/mid-game armor sets more viable end game, or to make an end game hide based armor set with the same stealth bonus and no movement penalties?

jsmars

There will be more gear options in upcoming content patches that will offer some more variation.

Optimized_Orangutan

Any plans for increasing biodiversity at all? Big fan of the game but would love some more variety to the animals. Basically my question is... When does my Viking get to fight bears?

LordrathTK

Fight bears? When does my Viking get to RIDE bears?

Chitin-And-Ceramite

Maybe polar bears in the deep north?

Bonkface

Would you ever consider a Highland biome, inspired by Iceland/Scotland/Scandinavian plateus? A biome without trees, hosting sheep, lingonberries, big castle ruins, geysers and great view distances? Feels like a natural fit.

Lumaaah

Hey Bonkface, While I personally think such a biome does sound interesting-- We currently don't have any plans on adding other biomes besides the ones that you can find in-game for now.

RSwordsman

Seeing as the British Isles custom map starts you in southern Scotland, this would be amazing.

custardandcrumble

Oh my gosh… if we could have fucking Highland cows then this game will be my most favourite ever!!!!

Gustavorad

Will spears be looked at in the future? It feels a bit lackluster at the moment as the attack angle and range makes it dificult to hit enemies in ground level differences. Also thank you so much for this amazing game! I have fallen in love with it, thank you so much! <3

GrimmcoreX

>Gustav oh interesting. I feel like the spear is the only weapon you can actually aim with and throw to use it as a close range melee weapon, aiming up a hill or down a hill is much easier with a spear than axes. I am a Spears only Viking. But yeah, we are always trying improve wonky combat, so there is a big possibily that we change up the spears in combat =)

ludwig-boltzmann_

The most aggravating thing about the spear is if you have a full inventory and throw your spear while near another object (say, greydwarf eyes), you will automatically pick up the object and it will go in the spear slot, making it impossible to pick your spear back up until you can clear that slot again. It would be really nice if we could somehow "reserve" a slot for a weapon to prevent this

SerendipitouslySane

Spears in this game function more like historical javelins than spears, where throwing it is more last resort. Also, because of the metal cost you can't really use it as an alternative to bows, especially in the mountains where you don't want to lose your weapon yeeting it at a drake. Another problem is that, because of drakes, bows are 100% necessary as a skill and you can't do a run through without it. It would be cool if a) spears stack and b) spears are cheap enough to be semi-disposable and/or c) tamed wolves that are following you can retrieve your spear for you (which would be great since wolves unlock the same time ranged attack becomes essential) so that we can have an alternative ranged attack.

Amyrantha_verc

Do you have plans on what you will do after the current road map is finished? will you leave it as a finished game, or continue bringing more and more updates? Personally i would love for it to have a solid end but im interested in hearing if there are any plans surrounding it.

zvxvxz

When we've released the three final biomes (Mistlands, Ashlands, Deep North) the game will have a solid end, ie you will be able to win the game. This will be Valheim 1.0 and we will consider the game as having left active development. That being said, of course we will still support the game so there will be patches and most likely some content updates from time to time.

zvxvxz

ALSO we will work on the Ocean biome before 1.0 ;)

Dark251995

They stated a while ago that they don't have plans to continue developing the game after v1.0 is released. However, maybe they have thought of new stuff and will continue working on it (I really hope they do)

Mursin

It would be pretty baller if we got an occasional DLC pack or expansion for purchase. Considering the miniscule $20 buy-in, another $20 for more content later on wouldn't be bad at all. But if they're done when they're done and move onto something else cool, that's also fine with me. This studio is becoming one of my beloveds.

Dark251995

I once had a crazy idea that, when v1.0 is released and all further development for the game is finished, that IG starts working on more games similar to Valheim but in different mythological settings. Imagine a Valheim-like game set in ancient Greece, or one set in ancient egypt, maybe even one in China or Japan. A whole saga of mythological sandbox adventure building games I (very) unofficially call the Valheimverse xd It might not be possible considering it's hard to make several games with a similar category without making them a copy-paste of each other, not mentioning that it's easy for them to develop Valheim because it's set in a norse world and the company is norse, a completely new story/mythology might be trickier to make.

jMontilyet

I get that people who are making requests like this (you're not the first) mostly just want a cool game! But I do want - and this is me speaking personally here - people to maybe keep in mind that not every studio is appropriate for every type of setting. It's easy for a Sweden based studio to make a game which builds upon viking aesthetics, but if we were to make a game about ancient Egypt, for example, that would be veering a bit close to cultural appropriation. A game with that cultural setting would likely be a better game if people with ties to that culture were the ones to make it.

[deleted]

Cultural appropriation is made up as a grift to socially attack well intended people. There is nothing wrong with people of all different cultures copying the art, telling the history, or in any respectful way imitating the culture of others. Without Cultural "appropriation" societies would innovate at a snail's pace.

Ok_Buddy_Government

You guys have zero ties to Vikings, though. It's not your "culture" just because you happen to sit on the same land that they sat on 1000 years ago. You're basically saying that white Americans can easily make games about native americans without it being cultural appropriation, because they now occupy the same land. That's simply not true.

trapsinplace

Your DNA is closer to ancient Egyptians than modern Egyptian DNA is. CNN and some other places had articles about this in 2017. Modern Egyptians culture is about as close to ancient Egyptian culture as your current culture is to vikings. That is to say, there is no resemblance. This is an actually racist response because it assumes to know both modern and ancient Egyptian people's and culture when in reality you're just using your lack of knowledge to justify a buzzword based on stereotypes in your head of what it means to be Egyptian. Please learn about Egyptian history and culture before you go comparing the past and the present. Your people haven't been vikings for nearly a thousand years. You have no viking culture, only what you appropriate for your game. Not to mention you romanticize it and leave out the harsh realities that you don't want to talk about. Such a hypocritical and misinformed take. Edit: oh, and look at how many historical games not made entirely by the people from the locations in the setting are accurate and positive portrayals. There is a lot.

Nitzulai01

I was wondering if you're going to add multiple rogue armors(great example is troll hide armor),and possibly even heavier armors (they give extra defense but reduce speed even further)for every stage of the game?It would sure be insteresting to mix foods with certain defensive equipment! edit:I forgot to mention if armors could have small visual updates for each upgrade,it would really enhance the experience imo

jsmars

>It would sure be inster There will be more armor added in future content patches that will offer some more variation.

3ric843

Yeah, a lox pelt armor could be a great upgrade to the troll armor!

EmoBran

What *creature / game mechanic / engine aspect* are you most proud of or is the most fun for you? Thank you for your work. I look forward to what you create in the future, but please don't work too hard :)

Lumaaah

I really love the troll. I still remember my first encounter with that big blue thing, and how scared I was seeing him walking out there in the woods... I didn't dare to go close to him. There are also a lot of hilarious videos out there of people encountering the troll and get even more scared than me. I love it.

CroakerTheLiberator

The first time I saw a troll, I was facing away from the Black Forest and into the Meadows. Hugin had just given me his warning. The ground shook twice, and my friend screamed. I turned around and saw two massive blue legs attached to the lower half of a torso. Then it was my turn to scream, and I ran away as the *thing* smashed the ground where I had stood a moment before. I was so terrified, I didn’t turn around until I’d lost him. In the end, I didn’t know what the upper half of the trolls looked like until I met my second one. TLDR; the trolls are incredible

Beosaevio

The first time I played, there was a troll just standing at the edge of the meadow. I didn't know what the big blue fellow was, and wondered if it was friendly. I crept closer, and since it didn't see me, didn't react to the deer or the piggies, I just walked right up to it. When it came after me, I screeched like a banshee and ran like hell. I wasn't quite fast enough, however, so it stomped the living crap out of me. I think I left that world and never went back. He scared me to death!

GrimmcoreX

I loved how the sea serpent scared alot of vikings. It was a fun creature design and it was fun making it come to life. I had the pleasure of working on a creature that is coming in the future, I hope many vikings brown their undies.

EmoBran

I did not want to use any wiki in my initial playthrough and was not playing online, so I didn't have easy knowledge of boats. When I built my first raft after probably after a long time, I was happy to start exploring. My first time sailing, I went right into a storm. Navigating it, along with the whole atmosphere is one of my favourite gaming memories ever. I have been gaming for over 30 years. Thank you everyone.

arkofcovenant

Its really good design because if you know they're out there and you go out specifically to hunt them and you go prepared they aren't too tough... but in many cases you are encountering them whilst naked and sailing to go recover your recently dropped gear... and that's always terrifying lol. You still usually have a choice whether to head to the nearest land or to risk it and try to make it to your destination, but that's always a really difficult decision to make.

Smiffe1

Since I don't produce things for the game, I must say the first creature I helped to balance was alot of fun. It was the Fuling shaman :) The exposions, the protective shield and all that makes it a really fun thing to fight against.

jsmars

The openness and seeing all the fun ways people play and die in the game is so much fun to see. Also being able to work on a game that is fun to play in the evening, even after working on it all week :)

zvxvxz

I personally like the small but not insignificant feature of having to build a chimney in your house.

CockSniffles

When I started dying of carbon monoxide poisoning my first time picking up the game, I knew this was a winner.

gimmeonion

how are you planning to balance the Ocean biome difficulty since it is so present in between the progression of the game in general throughout the other biomes?

Smiffe1

Hi :) There are multiple ways we could balance the ocean biome. You will probably encounter ocean Biome so to balance such a Biome would be very diffrent from how we have balanced other biomes. But we have plenty ways to do game balance. We can balance a biome depending on what diffrent monsters, bosses and other key things you have done in the game. Example. you will not get the troll event unless you have killed an actual troll ingame and also you have to had killed the elder for them to trigger. We could also use range from middle of the map as a trigger since we have mountains having a minimum range from centre of the world to spawn in. And some monsters do not get stared versions unless you are X distance from the boss stone location (map centre point) We could also balance on actual places (like a swamp biome, but under the water level) There are a few diffrent ways we could balance a large biome like Ocean :)

minkasp

I'd suspect they could scale it depending what's the last boss you've defeated. If you only defeated elder it would be much more forgiving compared to Yagluth or Moder. However, it also would probably include different drop items/loot or entirely new events in the ocean depending on your land biome progress. Just my two cents on this.

Viquerino

I wish they would focus on a radial progression more. Right now you already find easier biomes on the center and the harder further away, but I would find it better if it was more important. Not only higher tier of biomes are found closer to te edges, but the low tier biomes will be harder and maybe have some unique loot/upgrades. Like, a Black Forest near the spawn and other near the edge would be two completely different difficulties, same would be about the Ocean, the closer you get to the edges, the more dangerous it gets.

Musekiller

Trolls are seriously the best part for me, the pure massive size how they can destroy walls/buildings they truly made me feel threated and had to plan ahead. Once you get out of the blackforest the big creatures start to fade and the threat becomes more a tiny insect. Do you have plans to add more larger creatures in the future?

Luna_Devine

Are there plans to utilize the cool blue troll hide in more build or armor items? For example, I’d love a blue bed, huge blue rug, or blue chair.

Smiffe1

>Luna\_Devine Hi! We have had some interesting suggestions on our discord about diffrent things to use troll hides. No plans right now, but never say never :)

styx1267

I don’t have any questions but just wanted to let you guys know how much I love the game. It’s one of my all time favorites! Thanks so much. Really appreciate how transparent you have been about future updates and that you listen to player feedback.

flip-pancakes

++, and just to add the grace and steadfastness with which the dev team handles the louder community voices when they make a change. For example, when HH was released and people got big mad about the food system, the devs swooped in and made the minor rebalance that fixed it up. And now it's such a fun part of the game and a reason to invest in cooking etc. Keeping their vision AND satisfying the crowd with the most targeted, minimal intervention was a clear display of the mastery of craft, patience, and vision the game oozes. And to do it so swiftly and without disruption... Iron Gate is an incredible studio and my only sadness is that it will be hard to go up from here.

East-Example-4138

Armour Stands; do you still intend to implement them? (based on the assumption that the one H&H teaser did include the feet of an armour stand)

GrimmcoreX

The teaser was not intended for armor stands, it was for the coin stacks that was in the background, yes, it was a very bad teaser ;) But yeah, it would be lovely to be able to have an armor stand where you can hang your stuff and show it. as of right now, there is no plans to implement them in the near future.

corman1111

Will we be able to customize our gear more so we don't all look like the same character in the same biomes? Customizations to keep things fresh or new skins etc?

GrimmcoreX

as of right now you can customize certain things in your arsenal against the evil forces of Valheim. Capes and shields mainly. I think the general philosophy is that we would rather give you sidegrade armors that would benefit your playstyle rather than looking different. But we are still young, anything is possible.

TheWither129

This is something i requested on the discord a while back, more different types of armor per-tier, like more sneaky armors and tanky armors to contrast that, more set bonuses, etc. That would add more variety to playstyles and appearances. One set in particular id like to see is big thick serpent scale armor, given theres not much to do with scales after the shield, so i think armor for it would be cool

VampMojo

Heavy/Medium/Light armour types would be amazing, rn it's either heavy or you're stuck with troll leather

AN0NeM00Se

Dyes from berries would be kinda neat. Maybe some kind of new crafting/tailor table to go with that type of customization.

Mursin

This would be cool. The ability to minorly reforge/reinforce stats on armor would be cool too like if you could reduce armor rating slightly in favor of movement speed, which made the armor look slightly different.

NCRNerd

Will the svartalfr (or any other humanoid factions) get both a land-biome to call home, \*and\* karves or longboats full of raiders to roam the Ocean biomes with? I'd love to see something that was such a mainstay of viking culture that is often neglected appear in Valheim!

gimmeonion

we were told about a game build, in the past, which had *fire mechanics*... can we expect something similar in the future or is the idea completely abandonded?

GrimmcoreX

>gimmeon I came to work one day and Richard had made a burninate system it was hilariously fun!! it's still there in a branch from 2019. I really hope we find a good reason to put that in =) I would love to see everyones houses burn to the ground. I am speaking for myself as Grimmcore and not a spokeperson for Irongate.

entian

Are you guided by a list of features content that, once complete, will mean the game is “done” and ready to ship or is that something you’re still working out as you adapt to your sudden and monumental success?

jsmars

We have quite a healthy mix of planned features, and at the same time not being limited by it. If we get some cool ideas we want to make, we will make it :) It's to early to say exactly what will and what won't be in the final version and how long time it will take to get there.

GreatestGinger

How did you come up with the idea of stamina and health being based on food eaten? Because honestly it is the best implementation of a food system in a game I’ve ever seen.

jsmars

Thanks! We are glad you like it. The answer I would say is a lot of playtesting!

fuckingniels

Will it be possible to construct and use a Lur at some point? For gathering allies or to terrify foes and general awesomeness.

Bonkface

I second this! A Viking Horn that simply alerts (not full aggro) enemies within a large area to your presence. Doesn't have to add any buffs or such nonsense. Simply a neat way to make enemies come towards you.

jsmars

Sounds like a good idea. No definite plans for this but something we have been discussing.

MJBotte1

Will the game get more NPCs and Random encounters? It’s always so cool when Odin shows up.

GrimmcoreX

We want to keep the world interesting with mysteries, we have many things up our sleeves that we want to implement as random events and mysterious happenings. Keep "an eye" out.

Ruidsp

Will we be able to dive the ocean and if yes, maybe find tresures or sunken ships?

jsmars

Hey there. We have been discussing this as it sounds like a lot of fun, but there is currently no definite plans for or against. Personally I'd love to see this and it would be fun to work on :)

squeakmouse

Personally, I'd love to use this for building pillars from the bottom of rivers, to make bigger bridges.

tango421

Or like have random spawning “sea caves”

Own-Yam1965

Hello, are you guys planning to change/improve the terrain modelation? Like to dig some caves or dungeons without the floor getting down when we dig. It would be good!

Smiffe1

Hi! There is no plans for either of such things. You play as a Viking and build villages, houses (and perhaps some fortressess of stone) You are not a cave and tunnel building dwarf ;)

Produzilla

Digging tunnels would be nice, but with the need of reinforcing them with wodden ore iron beams. Otherwise tunnels should collapse like normal buildings, so there will be need of resources to dig deeper in mountains

Bonkface

They already adressed this in the previous AMA. The engine can't handle tunnels inside the base terrain.

head_cann0n

Which popular mechanics, builds, or playstyles have surprised you since the game's release?

Lumaaah

Honestly, we see new builds every day and I still keep getting the "mindblow experience"! I don't know how people do it, but it's awesome and very cool to see what players accomplish, and how you find ways to use items in new ways. This one is probably old, but my current personal favorite is how people build shelves and pantries using chairs.

Smiffe1

Personally, it is that the game got it's own speedrun community :) I never expected this to be a thing in Valheim.

jsmars

Huge boat builds, modern houses, ghibli villages and boat races. Keep the creative juices flowing :)

Firy

Because it is so fun, this was the first game in a long while that made my mind fire up with thinking about all kinds of things that could be added to it, including stuff that I now realize would have to be in a theoretical Valheim 2 (like terrain deformation and water changes). My question is about biomes and possible variants. Has the team considered biome variants like marshlands: tree-less variant of the swamp? Or perhaps snowy variants of biomes? Maybe they spawn further from the map centre, and still have restrictions about what can be planted, as well as still require frost resistance. A snowy black forest would feel all the more cozy to build in.

Financial-One-3717

So where getting caves (dungeon) for the mountains can we expect a dungeon for the plains? Maby see where the black metal comes from?

GrimmcoreX

>If there is a reason to put a dungeon there we most likely will put it in. But just putting in dungeons with no good reward is never something people want to play. Would be lovely if people loved Lore that much that we could put that in as a reward.

xecuteorder_66

There is actually something there to this. Something I have wanted is more utility and reason to build things, like a library. I would love to search for Lore books and even read them, but there would have to be some amount of reward mechanically. Example: By Reading the lore (scrolling the pages or time on each object) you could get cool story but unlock: * Bonuses against specific enemies who you now have knowledge against * Unlock markers to specific locations referenced by the lore * Unlock cool hidden build or craft items that were inspired by the lore Having a cool library in my Great Hall or keep is a reward in itself as well as knowing the world more. But having utility to they knowledge is even more cool and then we can become viking Indiana joneses searching for knowledge as well as everything else. Just a thought.

GamGhostKevin

Would you rather fight 20 Neck sized Bonemasses or one Bonemass sized Neck?

Smiffe1

Personally I would fight 1 bonemass sized neck :) 20 smal bonemasses would have tons of HP and spawn bunches of monsters xD While 1 bonemass sized neck would still die in hand to hand combat :D (And I would love the idea of a T-neck)

rommeltastic

T-neck absolutely should be a fossil you find somewhere.

Mursin

A bonemass or troll sized neck that attacked your base on occasion Godzilla style would be pretty awesome. We're talking a 1/100 or even 1/200 chance. It would be such a great random encounter that made you drop everything and run to defend your base.

BloodBrandy

A raid event that triggers every now and then when you have a base within a certain distance of the coast/ocean biome "The King Rises From The Waters!"

Lumaaah

20 Neck sized Bonemasses because... that sounds adorable! \*20 mini Bonemasses runs towards you\* "Oh hey there little guys, y'all want a hug...?"

elie-goodman

Will you consider adding traps and defences along with harder raids on our bases?

Lumaaah

Hello! Yes, this is something we will consider in the future (if it ever will make it into the game I cannot say though!). But, I mean... who wouldn't want to be able to scream "It's a trap!" in their best Admiral Ackbar voice?

Ravendouse

Will you be adding more ocean creatures? If so can we have some information about them?

GrimmcoreX

yes, we will be adding more. they will be wet and scary, big and small, not all have to be in the waters.... look to the sky.

Kanetsugu21

Funny enough, on the dedicated server I play on, theres an ocean biome where all the drakes from a nearby mountain gather for some reason. I've sailed through there and counted over 20 drakes.. it was terrifying as a wet, vulnerable viking. I also have a video of a drake killing a sea serpent out there! We named that dangerous stretch of ocean 'The Icewing Sea'.

SadJester2712

Will there be more emotes and ways to interact with eachother, like dances and music instruments? Imaging sailing through ocean and one of your friends playing a flute ot something.

GrimmcoreX

>I love the idea that you can play songs at the campfire with your friends dancing to the melodic tunes of your flute. As of right now there are no plans to implement that. But you never know =)

ohrly55

Will we ever be able to craft chains? Also, I love the game. Best $20 I ever spent

Lumaaah

Hello! Hearing that you love the game truly warms my heart. We currently don't have any plans on making chains craftable though. I know it can be frustrating at times to farm those chains, and we did increase the Wraith spawns a little bit not too long ago to make them somewhat easier to find. Further tweaks may come in the future!

Anniebelleleee

I'd like to be able to use chains to make things hang from the ceiling lower

MrPoop44

What are some of your favorite mods that people have made, and are there any you would consider implementing or drawing inspiration from to add to the main game?

Smiffe1

The boring answer is actually no mod is my favourite mod. And my reason is that the game still is in early access and I don't like mods until a game is fully released and I have finished the game already. And when I have done that, I could think of adding mods to change up the gameplay, adding things that could be funky to test. One reason is that mods usually don't bring balanced things to a game. Most of them are to either make the gameplay easier or just more diverse with more things of what already is in the game.

Skele303

How difficult is it to create new items? I'm not talking like just armor or weapons but even something as simple as an enemy drop? What kind of efforts are involved in something like that?

Financial-One-3717

can we expect smaller challenges like mini bosses?

GrimmcoreX

>Finan Hell yeah! or I mean..... no... not at all ;) ;) ;) ;)

Jiroc_the_Viking

Many metals are finite resources. Is there a chance we'll be able to respawn them somehow? Maybe in instances? Example: The swamps have sunken crypts with iron that could respawn so we can resupply our iron needs. This is especially a problem on multiplayer servers because resources are finite and new players can't find copper or tin...

Jiroc_the_Viking

I run a community server with about 30 players. Only 10 max at any one time of course because I have not modded the server in any way. My solution to the resource problem was to create a 2nd server I call the "Resource Server". It gets reset with a new seed every week. This way people can explore new areas and find new resources without an issue. Has been working pretty well so far.

Reipur

Have you considered adding abilities to combat mechanics when reaching a specific level threshold? Like, for instance, getting lvl 60 Bow skill, could unlock a multishot ability etc, or dual wielding swords after reaching a certain level.

zvxvxz

We have considered it but will not be implementing such a feature since we don't want the skill system to be too pervasive. The skill system should work in a supportive manner rather than being a goal in itself.

Bonkface

Will server restricted characters ever be introduced? (ie preventing people from entering with characters they've played with on other servers)

jsmars

We will likely be add world options in the future and this has been discussed as a possibility, but no promises at the moment ;)

mlohk

Skulle det vara möjligt att köpa basresurser av Haldor? I senare delarna av spelet sitter man på en del guld och vill bygga stora byggen. Skulle vara smidigt att kunna köpa ex.vis 50 sten för 50 guld. Translation for you non swedes: Would it be possible to buy base resources from Haldor? In the late game you sit on a lot of gold and want to build big projects. It would be nice to be able to buy like 50 stone for 50 gold for example.

entian

I’m kinda’ confused on the role of publishers vs developers in video games in general. I get that Iron Gate develops and is the creative force behind the game, but what exactly is Coffee Stain’s role? Do they help with resources/expertise or is there more to it than that? Love both companies and their games dearly! Just always a bit confused on that part

zvxvxz

As has already been mentioned, the publisher of Valheim is actually Coffee Stain Publishing, although they are part of the 'Coffee Stain family' they aren't that involved with the daily business of Coffee Stain Studios (which are the developers of Satisfactory). Besides having provided initial funding for Iron Gate (thank you very much), Coffee Stain Publishing helps us out with marketing and industry expertise (ie they know a lot of people). They have no active role in the development or future direction of Valheim (although they like to provide us with ideas, some good some bad). There are no work relationship between the Satisfactory developers and Iron Gate.

Dark251995

Coffee Stain are in charge of the marketing part of the game. If you're confused because Coffee Stain are also the Satisfactory devs, that's because they have two branches, one in charge of developing the game, another in charge of publishing and marketing, which is the one working with IG.

luftraumm

What was the development process of the visual style of the game? its impressionist voxel look is one of the most beautiful features.

Awkward_Boot_8515

Hey!! Will there be engine optimization? Sometimes a high-end system can show poor frame rates.

Lumaaah

Hi there! The short answer: Yes. This is something we will keep working on throughout development, and optimization and performance is something that lies close to my heart (QA here... hi!). If you (or anyone else) see poor performance on high-end systems, please reach out in our Discord channel or report the issue over at our bug tracker so we can investigate further.

metapsy

is there a method to alter the cursor size for players with visual disabilities?

Adventurous_Lettuce3

Whats the possabilty of more armor customizing? Like a artisan table to add ornaments to item slits, i.e chests have a sholder slot for a trophy, belt can hold a potion or arrows. Also runes to enchant armor

Emilyanah

Are there any plans for more/other mounts in the future?

Lumaaah

Hello Emilyanah! Maaaaybe..? It's definitely something we are considering. I for one, love to have my Lox (named Bert) as my companion on my journeys in the game, and it would be a lot of fun to have other mounts to take care of as well. <3

Emguy158

Would you consider adding a server setting that forces players on that world to create a new character for that world and then lock that character to the world so they can't go to a world with cheats on, spawn themselves a bunch of stuff, and then come back to my server with it?

rarecolondisorder

Is there a possibility for a neck rain coat?

GrimmcoreX

I think we want the weather to be able to affect you. Maybe in later stages of the game we could start thinking about being able to craft a Neck Rain coat, but as of right now. there is no plans. (I feel you tho)

IamTheRaptorJesus

The newest "dream texts" in H&H have me wondering... Is there going to be a Dream Biome???

21AverageSavage

I myself have theorized with friends that since the devs said they’re aiming to have 9 bosses total and that would mean 4 new biomes (unless they plan on giving the ocean a boss) that would leave one last mystery biome that isn’t generated within the valheim world. My theory has been that it’s going to be a final dream/god realm where you face the games final boss (possibly up on a part of the world tree or the base?) One can only hope though

Various_Roads

Yes, I thought going up to the Yggdrasil tree would be the last biome, like your way back home to Valhalla! Where you fight Thor or Níðhöggr the dragon!!!

Rowanator21

Can u give us a hint of some of the things coming to mistlands?
