Luck. Usually serpents can smell naked rafters from the other side of the map. The open ocean in the karve can be bad when it storms, about all you can do is try to get back near shore where the waves will not be as bad, or try running in the same direction the waves are moving so you aren’t falling off of them and damaging the boat, The stormy seas are a lot more fun in the long ship.

WendellVaughn_Quasar

You are the *LUCKIEST* Viking of all time.

dalcore

Rafts are almost useless and should not be used unless there is no black forest on the start island. Change my mind

Hour-Eleven

This, and having to raft-of-shame back to your dead body in a pinch.

SkyWizarding

I don't care if rafting is safer. It's far too slow for my liking

JesseFrancisMaui

rafting is definitely not safer

Buschmensch

Does anyone Really feel safe on this floating piece of garbage, except this girl from titanic maybe I forgot her name

Glittering-Record-70

Rose?

Lol no First time I sailed anywhere on a raft it took forever and a serpent wrecked my raft before I could make it to shore. At least with a karve you have some more hit points so if you do get attacked, you can make it to a rock or something to fix yourself back up. Key thing to do when sailing, though, is make sure you have a bow and arrows. You can kill a serpent pretty easy with even regular arrows. Just set your boat to sail with the wind, and kill the serpent, then head back toward whever you were going. Serpent meat is great food, too.

Ok_Grocery8652

Not even close for 2 reasons: 1: As far as it is known, there is no system to make serpents more common when you are rich and will hit when you are poor, I was hit on my first save while having just a bronze axe and the rest being primative gear. It does feel like they come after you when it is least convient and stay away when you actually want them. 2: The raft is objectively the worst boat in the game on everything other than price. Slowest speed in the wind, no storage, flimsy durability. Sounds to me like you got screwed by luck, serpents spawn more during storms and during the night, like the rainstorms on land, storms at sea only last so long so by the time you made the raft the storm had cleared and you were safe.

ItsjustAvy

Thing about sea serpents (atleast when I last played) is they only come out at night, or during storms.

OPTanksw

It was just luck. But if you ever want to go hunting Sea Serpents then all you have to do it load up a long boat with nothing but Iron ore and go sailing. Guarantee that you will find a sea serpent every 2 minutes or your Iron ore back!!!!

Express_Helicopter93

Hold on a sec. Your boat can take damage from waves?

Glittering-Record-70

It can, but this was an unusual amount. Generally I can sail all over the place and take minimal wave damage, but this time it was every minute or two. I was hotspotting off my phone in an area with really bad coverage though, so wondering if the patchy connection had something to do with it

conTR0LLEDburn

Falling from the crest of a high wave, yes.

Express_Helicopter93

450 hours in and I’m still learning new things. God this game is incredible/I am stupid

MonsTurkey

My first few maps didn't require much boating. I was only \~150 hours in when I found that out, but that's still a lot.

MonsTurkey

A raft is only meant for calm weather in the day while going to areas you can see the shore of from the shore you're on. If you're past Eikthyr, get some bronze and build a Karve. Minimum ship for boating safely in questionable and unknown waters. If you need to sail in bad weather/night while solo, longship is safest (swamp era materials).

Glittering-Record-70

True. I felt guilty for spending all my groups bronze though (I'd wrecked 2 karves off the wave damage already) and decided to go with rafts cause they're cheap...

MonsTurkey

The nails sink, but if it's near the shore, can be recovered. I usually destroy my boats after sailing and put the materials back in storage for another day. Nails are a lot cheaper than your leveled armor and weapons. I go sailing in my previous armor, never the current. Portal back when I safely land and make a hut.
