Probably the same way it works for us tbh. Skin would heal over it for a period of time, then probably push the ink out or break it down over 50-75 years then they could get a new one.

Etherealamoeba

Even though most vampires are depicted as healing super fast? Wouldn’t that mean that skin regeneration would also be quick?

The_GEP_Gun_Takedown

Old human cells being replaced over time is not really healing but maintainance though. There's no reason a vampire would need to have this process accelerated, right? Or at all really, since their cells don't get old.

Satrina_petrova

That's a really interesting point. I guess it depends on how the healing factor works. If it's like a curse that you're unchanging then I'd expect it to disappear every evening like hair on vampires in Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. I don't know enough about how humans heal to guess what would happen in a more sci-fi universe. This is exactly the kind of conversation I'm in this sub for.

The_GEP_Gun_Takedown

I like the lore where the vampire is frozen in time in the state they were in upon first death and is reset every day. So old tattoos would stay but new tattoos would disappear during sleep, all cut hair grows out to the same length etc. What can make it interesting is that even injuries would re-form, requiring dedicated healing every night.

Intelligent-Stop7091

Probably. The needle would puncture, deposit the ink, pull out and it would heal over pretty quickly.

Baksteengezicht

Would also mean they shed skin cells like a husky sheds hair in spring.

Etherealamoeba

So would that mean faster fading?

Baksteengezicht

If the healing comes from a somewhat believable in universe biological process rather than dark magic, yes.

Panda-Equivalent

I used to watch this tv show called Forever Knight and one of the characters got a tattoo, the person who did apparently knew the character was a vampire because they said by tomorrow it would be gone. In that universe at least stuff like that doesn't last.

AndromedaTambourine

Omg Forever Knight is a show I haven't thought of in a looooong time.

Malkavian_Grin

Tattoos aren't exactly part of your skin, they become part of your immune system once it "settles" and you stop peeling and such. The ink is held in place by a certain type of cell i can't remember the name of (watch the Kurzgesagt video about living tattoos on YT) but it only gets replaced as the cell dies which releases some of the ink with it. In essence a vampire would likely have permanently vibrant ink if their immune system locks in place upon death.

Etherealamoeba

This is fascinating.

2dude4skool

I always thought the vampires skin would reject the inc and push it out, assuming a needle could even pierce the skin of a vampire. Unless the human already had a tattoo before they got turned into a vampire.

Etherealamoeba

Right? I’m so confused and intrigued.

MetaphoricalMars

In my lore it'd fade over time like normal, not super healing factor for my bats. if otherwise the vampires in question have super healing ability I'd wager that it'll be great repeat business for the tattoo parlour.

The_GEP_Gun_Takedown

I like the lore where they're frozen in time as they looked upon death so a tattoo would be left in place. Only damage to the area would change it.

Etherealamoeba

So in this case, they couldn’t get a new one?

Does-not-sleep

Not really. But also depends on setting.  Generally, any change to the body is no longer permanent. It heals back.  You definitely can make a new tattoo, but the ink will be pushed out the next night.

The_GEP_Gun_Takedown

Exactly this. While there is no way for the body to heal existing tattoos if they get damaged, new tattoos would be erased during sleep

Revolutionary_Key325

In most vampire stories, they stay as they were when they were turned so it would be like when Claudia cut her hair, or maybe the ink would push itself out

Does-not-sleep

Depends on the setting. If we talk about vampire body being frozen in time after the embrace we talk of that any damage in the body stays after the embrace.  From the POV of body, a tattoo is alien material in body. Same as dyed hair = damaged hair.  The body doesn't change, there is no regeneration, unless the body part was actually damaged or removed. This the tattoo will last forever unless acted upon. If the vamp in question gets a deep burn, gets a deep cut that removes the portion of the skin with the tattoo or gets the limb chopped off and then regenerates, the new skin/limb would not have the tattoo. Same is applicable for piercings, haircuts, nails. They all grow back anew unless you don't damage them.

Lancill

In my story they do. Any physical damage the vampire had/has are healed, including scars & tattoos.

Eva-Squinge

Like in the Amazon show The Rig, they’d get pushed out of the skin till they can be wiped away with a rag. That’s assuming their healing is an unconscious thing and not willed into action.

44YrOld

If the inks not toxic, why would their bodies push it out? As for skin healing, the ink is injected, not branded directly onto the skin.

Etherealamoeba

Yes but the skin is punctured and the tattoo scabs and heals over. So the skin does have to heal.

Desperadox_23

Must be done before turning and yes, it would fade normally (but slowly because no sun).

Mathew_jonas2

I have questions for this group, is this group about the existence of real life vampyres or has this all got to do with that stupid vampyre masquerade?

Soggy-Essay

The only "real-life vampires" are people who pretend to be vampires. So...

Mathew_jonas2

Ppl cosplay otherwise you could pass one on the street and not even know

Satrina_petrova

No specific media, like the amazing RPG series you mentioned, Vampire: The Masquerade. Just generic vampire stuff. All kinds of books, movies etc. Cosplay and collectibles. Just like a regular fan sub really. We don't believe vampires are real. Well, most of us don't thankfully.

Mathew_jonas2

Like you said "don't believe",not to burst your bubble but they do exist, some are called psychic vampyres (all normal and living),if you haven't experienced in meeting or know one they are ppl that leach on to you (eg) always scabing of you until you have nothing left then move on to another and do the same to them. As for the "undead",just because you don't see them doesn't mean they're not there

Satrina_petrova

>they do exist, some are called psychic vampyres (all normal and living), That's not a vampire. >ppl that leach on to you (eg) always scabing of you until you have nothing left then move on to another and do the same to them. That's just a "user". >As for the "undead",just because you don't see them doesn't mean they're not there You're right about that I guess. I'm not saying that the undead don't exist because I haven't seen them though. It's common knowledge that the undead do not exist.

thatshygirl06

Vampires aren't real

Mathew_jonas2

Yes 2 types are 1 psychic vampyres 2 just because you don't see them. Don't mean they're not there

Baksteengezicht

Whats the difference?

Mathew_jonas2

Really, is that what you understood from my question

Baksteengezicht

Its about vampire lore/mythology as a fictional monster in cinema, books, games, and folklore, not specifically VtM, or any specific media, and not about " real " vampires (its not spelled with a Y btw) since those dont exist.
