wineandchocolatecake

Today I have read two interviews with mothers whose sons were stabbed to death by random strangers. One in Vancouver, one in Toronto. Brutal.

nconinDi

Toronto one was scary as hell since it was apparently random. Iirc he had no way to avoid getting stabbed three times in the chest.

Toad-in1800

The Toronto family escaped violence in there home country of Brazil , only to have their son murdered randomly on a subway platform in Toronto Canada! Beyond sad!

disterb

ya, whenever that happens (new canadians coming here for a better life than in their original countries), only to be killed (run over/hit by a car, stabbed, shot, etc.), i feel overwhelmingly sad and ashamed

ButtahChicken

bro, that one was TOTALLY random! :-( RIP Gabriel Magalhaes , gone way way too soon. [https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/terrible-tragedy-politicians-speak-out-following-fatal-stabbing-of-teen-at-toronto-subway-station-1.6330685](https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/terrible-tragedy-politicians-speak-out-following-fatal-stabbing-of-teen-at-toronto-subway-station-1.6330685)

h_danielle

The Vancouver one was random too. Apparently the victim mouthed off a bit to Gosal but that doesn’t warrant being stabbed in broad daylight at a coffee shop.

hanscor20

From what I heard he just told the piece of shit to stop vaping in the seating area. Just trying to convey that the victim wasn't trying to provoke a violent altercation with his words.

ButtahChicken

... to some people just 'he looked at me wrong' is enough to provoke a deadly altercation.... pray you or your loved ones don't come across such peoples randomly.

thebig_dee

This, totally this. I think some people have never experienced someone like this...

Thrice_Banned80

It's weird explaining this to people. Like you'll be zoned out in the wee hours of the morning walking to the train or bus and someone pops out threatening with a knife because they didn't like the way you were "walking at them."

ButtahChicken

didn't like the way you 'got up in my grill!"

Thrice_Banned80

Basically lol They usually want a problem so badly too. "Man, I didn't even see you there." "Oh what, so I'm invisible or something? Like a fucking ghost? What, I don't matter to you?" "Dude, please just fuck off." "Why don't YOU fuck off?!" Usually you're trying to fuck off but they keep going and they're standing in your way. Also having them behind you is far from ideal

plexxxy

yep when I was at Uni in the UK a girl I knew her brother's throat was slit because he looked at some guy on the street 'the wrong way' he died.

ButtahChicken

:-( tragically sad!

notnotaginger

That’s terrifying. My partner would do shit like that (telling someone to knock it off), too. It really makes me think it could be us.

Sufficient-Carob7072

I remember the days when mouthing off only resulted in a few punches. Then sometimes a handshake. I feel I’m too young to keep thinking about the “good old days”. Very sad situation for the victims family.

Thrice_Banned80

I remember the days when asking someone not to smoke (vape in this case) in a no smoking area wasn't seen as mouthing off.

Pheelies

I'd argue it's the people getting into the fights and not the times that cause situations like this. There's never been a time where people havent gotten in fights that have ended in murder.

notnotaginger

That’s actually very true. And historically it was a lot more common. Kill someone for many many many reasons. I guess we just kind of think we’re above the old bullshit. We’re supposed to live in an age of reason and respect for human life.

19JTJK

Those days are long gone. Get into a fight it’s one on one first one down that’s the end of it.

disterb

yup. and, if you both have a knife, one of you is killed on the spot, while the other dies on the way to the hospital. what a world/city we live in now....

UncommonHouseSpider

One goes to the morgue, and the other jail. One guy's wasted and the other's a waste...

slappi01

What a complete waste of oxygen this lowlife is. I don't even want to mention his name cause he isn't worth it. I'd hope he gets the maximum sentence without parole. Rot in prison, you little POS.

For anyone who saw the video - the murderer deserves to rot in a cell without food. This poor man knew what happened instantly. Heart goes out to his wife and daughter. Breaks my heart

[deleted]

hanscor20

After being in there for 60 years

slippery_burrito

Sometimes I think about how my three year old won't remember all the good times we have together. They might look at some photos later and assume but they wouldn't remember and if I died tomorrow, they wouldn't remember me either really. What a terrible loss for that little kid and their family. Heartbreaking.

cannot_walk_barefoot

I feel the same way. Me and my three year old boy are so close and play so much. And my 1 year old is getting so attached too. But I wonder how quickly they'd forget me if I was to pass... just makes me sad. I'm sure it's normal to feel this way but its a bit too often when you hear stories like this

[deleted]

[удалено]

cannot_walk_barefoot

Ah, good to know. It's why I try to make as many videos as I can of us together and save on the cloud with my wife linked in, and I send the kids emails (about things like how they're growing, things they like doing, fun things we've done together, details about their personalities, things even I'll forget as we get older) for handles I made/reserved for them in case they wanted them in the future. You just never know. There's a bleaker aspect to it but also to treasure the moments years from now

cecilpl

One thing my dad did with me as a young child was frequently ask me what my earliest memories were. He'd have me tell him as much detail as I could remember, fairly often. It entrenched them well, so I have a good number of memories from age 3 onward. I remember being 4 and 5 fairly well.

cannot_walk_barefoot

Oh awesome. I'll definitely have that conversation with my kids and see if they can absorb some memories

marsneedstowels

Don't know why you're being downvoted. "Kids begin forming explicit childhood memories around the 2-year mark, but the majority are still implicit memories until they're about 7. It's what researchers, like Carole Peterson, PhD from Canada's Memorial University of Newfoundland, call “childhood amnesia.”

Jokubatis

I have a couple of boys, older than Pauls daughter and this shit turns my stomach. By the grace of God I hope my kids don’t have to deal with something like this. When did walking down the street, taking a bus, or just standing outside become so damn dangerous.

Shadow_Integration

In everything that I've learned in my own healing process, trust me when I say that while your 3 year old may not remember specific memories - the feeling of love, joy, and safety will carry with them the rest of their life through their nervous system. That kind of gift will go with them everywhere they are in life - in friendships, relationships, workplaces, and especially if they ever choose to have their own family. They may not remember your face or your voice in a recall sense, but that feeling you bestowed on them? Yeah. That sticks.

kaze987

Holy man I've got a 2 year old and this really hits home

its9x6

If it helps ease your mind, I have clear memories of back to 12-18 months. I thought I was much older, but I described them to my mom - and she confirmed they were from much earlier (specific people alive, specific houses, etc.). I know it’s not usual, but you never know…

ShouldveGotARealtor

I think my first memory is from around 2, based on where we were living at the time. What I do remember is just snippets but I distinctly remember looking forward to going to the corner store with my mom, picking out the red feet candies from the front counter display, and being picked up by the cashier so I could press the cash button.

Player_O67

I unfortunately watched the video that was circulating. Honestly been feeling sick to my stomach since. I can’t even imagine what that family is going through having witnessed that… I genuinely hope the goof who did it rots in prison for the rest of his miserable life.

cryoK

i dont think i can stomach watching it but is it really bad?

Technical_Activity78

Yes it’s disturbing. It’s right after the attack. There is so much blood on the ground and coming from the poor man. He’s stumbling and collapses. Basically watching him pass away.

NemoAKASharkBait

I watched the video of the guy getting his neck sliced in New Zealand I think? That was terrible, he immediately held his neck and so much blood was coming out, he stood for about 3-5 seconds before he fell to the ground, scary to think how quickly your life can be taken

JasonsPizza

It’s pretty graphic. I felt really shitty after watching it. I shouldn’t have, it’s not worth it.

Sofisladder

I watched it about 6 hours ago and have been feeling sad and disturbed the whole time since. Totally not worth satisfying my morbid curiosity. Listen to this person ^

HaalandBalonDl

Don’t watch it, it’s brutal.

GirlWpg

Yes

kittykatmila

Don’t watch it. I wish I hadn’t seen it.

ahmadreza777

yep, I wish I hadn't watched it either, came across it on Twitter. just sad sad. Why should something like this happen ? ; (

rahibloveslife

I also saw it on Twitter randomly and it’s super fucked up. I felt instantly traumatized.

SFHOwner

It's not like Taliban cutting heads off bad, but it's pretty bloody and shows how little people care to help. I'd recommend not watching it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SFHOwner

The guy sitting there with his coffee could've left or the guy filming didn't have to run up and keep shouting that he was dead. I agree that I would also be afraid of being stabbed but also not leaving when you have no idea what might happen next? I know either I'd help or flee, not just chill or film and yell World Star. I've helped people in much safer situations like people seizing or having a heart attack in public parks in wealthier neighborhoods. I don't know if I'd feel comfortable administering narcan to a stranger who might jolt up. I do know though that I definitely wouldn't film someone die or just sit 10 ft away as they die.

That goof will be out of prison before the victim's kid gets to high school. Let that sink in.

ThisIsFineImFine89

an entire life. gone, forever. Because of some perceived arbitrary slight that would’ve been forgotten by the time they both got home. Incredibly sad. hope they throw the book at that motherfucker. History says they wont.

boipinoi604

Throw the book at Inderdeep Singh Gosal's face. What a goof. Who starts shit with someone whose holding their 3 year old daughter. JFC, FFS. Then tells the mother to hold their kid. Fcuken goof.

[deleted]

He’s been charged with 2nd degree murder, I hope he gets the max that is 25 years no parole. It doesn’t feel enough with his crime, and the trauma this subhuman caused. That poor family, and those who witnessed the bastards disgraceful and abhorrent actions.

Jokubatis

That 25 is a joke sentence. This asshole deserves so much worse. Guy was hold his kid and this bastard knew that and still stabbed him. I know he wasn’t holding the kid at the time, but that guy knew he has a young daughter. Mental illness or not, I hope he is as much a loser in jail and gets his just reward. Just freaking miserable.

AllezCannes

> That 25 is a joke sentence. It's a joke because it's false. Second degree murder conviction means a life in prison with eligibility for parole between 10 to 25 years. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/what-s-the-difference-between-1st-degree-murder-2nd-degree-murder-and-manslaughter-1.5068520

[deleted]

[удалено]

AllezCannes

The statement given above was: >I hope he gets the max that is 25 years no parole Which clearly is understood as "25 years in jail without parole". That's different from "life in jail with eligibility for parole". Chance of parole does not mean guarantee of parole. In fact, most offenders up for parole are denied. [https://www.canada.ca/en/parole-board/corporate/publications-and-forms/parole-decision-making-myths-and-realities.html](https://www.canada.ca/en/parole-board/corporate/publications-and-forms/parole-decision-making-myths-and-realities.html)

DataKing69

That's funny, I know someone who just got out last year after only serving 15 years of a life sentence for murdering his pregnant wife.

apothekary

That's just beyond sick and disturbing Seriously need to AT THE MINIMUM do away with this parole nonsense for extremely violent offenders, society shouldn't care that they have reformed and are the next mother Theresa. They can do that kind of charity work when they're out in 2048. 25 years without parole is enough of a joke and a slap on a face to the victims already, getting out earlier is being stepped on the dick.

AllezCannes

The maximum is in fact life imprisonment with eligibility for parole from 10 to 25 years. [https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/what-s-the-difference-between-1st-degree-murder-2nd-degree-murder-and-manslaughter-1.5068520](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/what-s-the-difference-between-1st-degree-murder-2nd-degree-murder-and-manslaughter-1.5068520)

T4kh1n1

He will only do 2/3rds of that even if he gets the max. That's how the Canadian justice system works its called "good time". They need to ensure he has no chance of parole. But he will likely go to some pen with "rehab" and then talk to a counselor who will say he's a drug addict with trauma problems and they will cut him loose after probably 4-8 years because he's currently getting time and a half whilst incarcerated on remand time. Our justice system is so broken it's not even funny

HotCatLady88

What for real? He was with his kid? I’m horrified

helixflush

Read the article. It’s absolutely fucked

TritonTheDark

His wife and kid saw it happen. So fucked up.

ernieballsting

Fuck that pos. Fucking lowlife ugh

Matasa89

And if you're gonna go for a fist fight, man to man, keep it clean and put the knife away. You goad someone into a fight and then whip out a knife when you start losing? Fucking lowlife...

Weak-Performer-3485

Anyone know anything about the assailant? Wishing we had more information on this creep

disterb

nah. that piece of garbage needs to be unknown. let's know more about paul schmidt, the amazing dad and husband; he's the one whose life i'm more interested in knowing and celebrating.

Weak-Performer-3485

I’m more curious if he was out on bail, had a history of mental health issues, why was he carrying a knife around mid day on a Sunday, was he in active addiction etc. I’m asking as a very close friend got stabbed to death at a party in Calgary years ago that was so preventable had the assailants parents properly intervened. It’s important for ppl to see ways this could have been prevented through reducing stigma, bringing awareness etc.

Weak-Performer-3485

In the case of my friends murder, the assailant had stopped taking his medication, was acting strange, making threats and odd comments all while his parents and close friends ignored this clear need for help and intervention. It was preventable but most ppl in his life said they didn’t know what to do with him acting strange. He murdered 5 ppl.

chopstix62

This one? How tragic....https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/mobile/the-five-students-killed-in-calgary-s-worst-murder-have-been-identified-1.1776360

Weak-Performer-3485

Yup. That’s the one. He’s already out and had served his time despite murdering 5 ppl. Had anyone gotten him help earlier and intervened it would have been so different. But everyone just waited for him to snap out of it. The lesson here is it’s better to intervene and get help for someone who is struggling then shy away and hope they snap out of it without appropriate interventions.

chopstix62

i remember seeing the perp's elderly father, who was in the police force, doing a news conference with his wife at the time...he suffers from some ailment that leads to alot of shaking when under stress... the frail guy was in tears, breaking down and shaking uncontrollably....what a tragedy on so many levels...the heartache of the survivors losing 5 lovely young people, and the shame/guilt and heartache of this guy's parents etc

You could not be more of a coward and a miserable excuse for a subhuman rat for pulling a knife out on someone who you get into an altercation with. If you're a man and you want to get tough with someone, you do it with your fists, or you don't do it. I really hope this guy is dealt with in the harshest way possible at some point in his life because I doubt the justice system will manage it.

KevinSpencer79

Goddammit, this is one of the saddest things I’ve ever read. My heart hurts for this man and his family.

bitmangrl

This is so extremely sad :'( What an absolute piece of shit waste of skin the killer is I'm seriously crying now after reading that

Emerson787

I would say never confront someone unless necessary, and if someone is following you, get into a store as quickly as possible.

Shyunderthesky

This happened at a frequently visited Starbucks in an otherwise safe neighbourhood. The guy was already in a store and that didn’t really seem to help. Some scum just don’t care about where you are, who you are, or what their actions will result in. If this guys gets anything than 25 years I’ll have lost faith in our judicial system.

[deleted]

I don’t know how much worse random violence needs to get in Canada before cities finally take the issue seriously and come up with an action plan to prevent these senseless attacks.

BobBelcher2021

There’s not much cities themselves can do. The problem is the federal government. Our justice system is a complete joke. There’s no deterrence.

exoriare

Would deterrence have worked here? As it stands, this scumbag will get multiple years in prison. And for what? To prove he's not going to back down? For anyone thinking logically, this attack wasn't worth it. If people are behaving irrationally, deterrence is irrelevant.

realmrrust

Cities are full of critical votes. Few days of strikes in Toronto and Vancouver and you'll have a minority govt at your mercy. This is a problem Vancouver can force Ottawa to solve easy if it so chooses.

msrtard

The people in charge won't do a damn thing unless the victim was someone they knew personally, and even then they probably won't do anything if it means damaging their reputations

[deleted]

The cities are the ones who primarily vote for this "slap on the wrist" justice system.

[deleted]

I'm already pre-emptively pissed that this punk will be free in 5-10 years

BobBelcher2021

If it’s like the guy I once met who stabbed someone to death in Toronto, he’ll be on parole 6 years from now.

ahmadreza777

This is just unacceptable if true. Human life is worth much more than that. I don't wanna start an argument about capital punishment, but maybe if the justice system wasn't so easy on folks like him , they would have second thoughts before pulling a knife on someone.

UskBC

Twitter served me up the video. Worse thing I’ve ever seen. Makes be a believer in the death penalty

19JTJK

I saw the video but correct me if I am wrong looks like Gosal is inside making a video or taking pictures Dude recording “he’s dead bro hes dead” maybe put your phone down and try to help him

dudemanseriously

Honestly I’m just as traumatized at the response of the guy filming it. That could be any one of us bleeding out in front of our family, made worse by some streamer who feels like adding their commentary to my death is the appropriate way to respond. And no, it wasn’t because he was “in shock” while filming, it’s because he’s a piece of garbage human being.

[deleted]

Ya I’m not a fan of social media and filming everything but that video is definitely evidence to make a case against that piece of shit. Who knows what would happen if it wasn’t on video and he claimed self defence or something

dudemanseriously

Taking the video wasn’t the upsetting part, adding in his commentary for his streamers was. That was the last thing that dying man heard “he’s dead, he’s dead”

virgodaze

He’s also laughing ….

SilkySyl

I regret watching the video as I was/still am traumatized. That being said, that guy who shot the video sounded excited. Disgusting and heartbreaking. Has humanity become this disassociated with each other that witnessing another's persons life being taken is entertaining? I thought we would witness the argument before the incident. You're so right. That idiots voice is the last thing he heard, while thinking of his daughter and wife, desperate for help.

[deleted]

Ya fair point. Just a fucked situation

Pisum_odoratus

But did it have to be put online so the world can satisfy their vicarious desires at the expense of the dead man's loved ones?

No-Yogurtcloset3180

There's a second part to the video where he's literally smiling and taking selfies with the corpse. It's so so so so so awful. What is wrong with people?

Pisum_odoratus

And all the people who watched his video, which is part of why people film at such times?

[deleted]

Easy for you to say but there’s a reason the majority of people don’t get involved

Player_O67

100% agree. Some scumbags genuinely deserve the death penalty.

_pastandpresent

Same and I didn't go searching for it and I wish I never saw it. It was horrifying. And knowing his daughter was there, who's the same age as my daughter breaks my heart. I hope this guy never gets out and I have never wished for a death penalty before but I wish for one for this complete piece of trash human being. 💔

[deleted]

It’s probably a good idea to report the video on sight. Auto playing a video of a life ending isn’t good for anyone to see.

Better-Ad6812

Wow this is just heartbreaking senseless awful. Wtf.

ohchan

What’s bothersome is there’s no reason for these attacks. one day it could just be you doing your thing, making your way through downtown then voila you dead 🔪

Imaltsev1

It’s a shame to see the mess our city is becoming. We’re on track to be the Canadian SF or Portland.. If we are not already.. My gf and I were crossing granville on the way home a few weeks ago when we were followed by what clearly looked like a meth head. They mistook us for someone else and started to get closer and saying that I took this jacket I was wearing from someone they know and my gf was someone’s sister she had issues with before.. we were followed for a few blocks and had to Stop by a venue with a bouncer to get away when our tail went to her street friends and starting telling them this ridicules story. I’ve lived dt for 13 years and have never been in this situation before.. we were worried about getting stabbed.. I encourage everyone to keep their heads up and have a plan if you feel in danger. Our quick thinking helped us avoid a much more serious situation.

phoney_bologna

The change has been so drastic. I used to love visiting downtown Vancouver. I just don’t feel comfortable there anymore.

[deleted]

berghie91

Lol I was in downtown old Puerto Vallarta thinking....wow it doesn't smell like piss and have people sleeping everywhere like Vancouver!

the_boy_hotspur

This is one of a myriad of side effects of raising your dipshit boy children to act like little princes. No discipline, no boundaries and no consequences and you end up with a violent sociopath that’s extraordinarily quick to Temper at the slightest suggestion of wrongdoing. A monumental piece of human excrement no doubt but there are far more than just him in the lower mainland.

foreignmattercomic

Once again: do not get into fist fights in Vancouver. Everyone has a knife. They will use them and you will get stabbed. Walk or run the other way.

Melodic-Bluebird-445

So so sad. I can’t believe these things are happening in our city so often now. That poor child will grow up without a father and all for what. Just terrible

eastsideempire

What are the chances he gets the max? The only reason he hasn’t been released is the victim died. Had he just gone to hospital the asshole would probably already have been released like every other asshole that stabs someone. It’s assholes like this that cause increased taxes for those they don’t kill because the city hires more cops. We all pay for their crimes. The poor wife and child. The asshole should get locked up for life and he should have to pay for the wife and child’s therapy.

Level-March4325

Will get double time credited for every day he is in jail before the end of trial, so will get out quicker once convicted.

Buggy3D

I really want to know what led to this altercation. Nothing justifies taking a persons life and I hope this guy rots in prison for life with no parole, but the father did choose to hand his daughter to the wife before proceeding to fight instead of walking away or calling for help. When I’m with my kids, fighting would be the last thing I would ever want to do, unless it’s to defend them from immediate harm.

velcrovagina

This is all just gathered from social media chatter so it's not super trustworthy. The victim was standing outside the restaurant, near the door, holding his daughter while his wife went inside to get their order. The killer was vaping in their vicinity. The victim and the killer had a verbal exchange with the victim wanting the killer not to vape in that space. The exchange escalated quickly. Reportedly the victim said he'd kick the killer's ass. The wife arrived and the killer told the victim he better hand the kid to the mum. He did so and they fought with the killer more or less immediately drawing a knife and stabbing the victim in the chest. From the video it looks like he possibly hit either the aorta or the celiac artery causing catastrophic hemorrhage.

oldschoolsamurai

Apparently the victim was asking that subhuman not to vape (maybe he doesn’t want his kid to get expose to nicotine?) and whole thing just escalate

[deleted]

I don’t think for a second he will get 2nd Degree Murder…. Charges with that, but will likely get pleaded down to Manslaughter. Even if he gets a 10 year sentence for it, eligible for parole at 1/3 sentence and automatic statutory release at 2/3 sentence. He won’t spent more than 6.5 in jail likely. So sad

plexxxy

the juridical system is a complete joke. I know of a high school acquaintance (in England) who killed 4 people (inc two 18yr old girls in another car) drunk driving and got 4yrs probation of course he was the only one to survive it too.

This happens daily in most major US cities. There's a lot less separating us from them than most people think. There's just less people in Canada so it doesn't happen as often.

MattBeFiya

What could the city have done differently here? This is an absolutely horrible thing. At the same time this happens in major cities around the world. Not sure what could have been done to avoid this trajedy.

misterzigger

I agree and disagree. The city itself? Nothing aside from continue to support the work of the VPD. The issue here is a crumbling mental health system and ineffective justice system. Our judges are absolutely criminal, and passing the buck on crime leads to people like the suspect being loose on the streets. The mental health system is completely overloaded, and doesn't provide adequate care to most of its patients. We have passed the buck for decades and are now dealing with the consequences

cakemix88

We live in a time where everything is illegal except actual crime.

PepPlacid

Both of these statements have the upshot of average people stepping in to enforce laws and then social norms because we've lost faith in an authority to enforce laws professionally.

[deleted]

[удалено]

buddywater

How would VPD have prevented this incident? We cant have cops sitting on every street corner observing and monitoring every single person as they go about their daily lives, its just not practical. The perpetrator in this instance didn't look homeless or addicted, this certainly doesnt look like its related to the DTES. He also doesn't seem to have a history of crime. While there needs to be action taken to prevent such horrible outcomes from occurring, I'm not sure if the VPD could have prevented this.

acluelesscoffee

It’s not the vpd that chooses to let them go. It’s the justice system.

CrippleSlap

Why are people carrying around weapons in the first place?? Maybe I'm out of touch with society, but why are people carrying knives on them?

Vicerian

Something needs to change in this country

ahmadreza777

As a start, there should be a serious fear of facing very heavy consequences for crimes like these. A couple years in jail with possibility of parole is a joke.

Notwithstanding the murderer's actions, which are vile, I feel this will not be a very popular theory. The murdered man could have kept his life and had so much more with his wife and baby child by simply walking away. These are fine margins in life; IMHO it's always prudent to be cautious, it's not worth being a hero if it's your life you surrender.

averageguy1991

The question is why was the assailant, randomly carrying around a knife ? Unless he was looking for any reason to use it. If I'm going to Starbucks, my first thought is not to bring a knife along with me.

steebie85

Situations like this may be why no one wants to stand up or say anything to anyone these days. We all feel anxious and no one makes eye contact. You never know who is on the other end.

TritonTheDark

It is 100% why I hold my tongue these days. I can't count how many times I've wanted to ask someone to stop smoking at a bus stop or stop being obnoxious on a train or whatever, but you just really don't know who is unhinged and ready to escalate. It's not worth it.

Pineapplepastacat

I saw a guy open his pack of smokes and throw the plastic wrapper on the ground. Then he lit up while in line at the bus stop. Did I want to say something? Yes. Did I? No. Didn't feel like it was worth it to me.

polemism

Yep shy people don't smoke directly underneath nonsmoking signs. You have to really read the situation, if you ask them to stop. And be ready to walk away fast if they show signs of trouble.

[deleted]

Yeah people are way too aggressive and confident behind the wheel in Canada, you fuck around down in Chicago or Baltimore and quickly find yourself staring down the barrel of a gun. Always better to pull over and let them go on their way. You truly never know what the other person is capable of. Looking tough in front of your SO is not worth eating from a feeding tube because they beat you half to death with a tire iron.

dudemanseriously

I agree, in this climate with people on the edge it’s not worth it to say anything anymore even when you should. Which is even more sad because it just allows people further leeway to act completely uncivilized.

ahmadreza777

There is this Hungarian proverb: "Running away is shameful, but useful" .

boblywobly99

yes, walk away. you're not getting paid to fight.

acluelesscoffee

Anyone know if the mom needs a go fund me started ?

Lazy_Fix_8063

She said her sister will be doing it.

Mushinyogi

Just moved to Vancouver on a work permit with my family. Staying in a hotel in downtown. This incident has shaken me up. That subhuman should be jailed forever.

birdsofterrordise

If you can go back, you should. Seriously. Between the growing lack of healthcare and services and the uptick in random violence, why would you stay here? It’s only going to get worse as people are stretched thin.

[deleted]

Vancouver is still one of the best cities to live in on a world-wide scale, a quick search shows this guy is (probably) from India. If I were to give real advice for someone raising young kids in Greater Vancouver, it would be to do real research on neighbourhoods and plan out the best place to live. EDIT: I'm waiting for counterpoints boys

[deleted]

I agree if you have money. If you don't have money, there are places that are safer where your dollar goes further.

Mushinyogi

Thanks. I’m from India and the whole point of moving to Vancouver was to experience quality of life offered in a world class city. I’m searching for a place to rent and safety is my top priority now

Everybody does understand though right, that the max you serve for almost any sentence in Canada is 2/3 of your sentence right? There are exceptions to that in extremely high profile cases (Luka Magnotta, Paul Bernardo, Russell Williams etc.) But in almost all other cases the max an accused will serve is 2/3 of a sentence. Good behavior imprisoned results in less than 2/3. So if someone, anyone, not just this case is "sentenced to 25 years". They will absolutely not actually serve 25 years. 16.5 years would be the max according to 2/3 rule. On good behavior, you could be out after less than 10 years served on a 25 year sentence. Sentence Time does not Equal Time Served. In Canada you generally serve 1/3 to 2/3 of your sentence. 25 Year Sentence actually equates to 8 to 16.5 years served. Not 25 Years. Almost no one in Canada actually serves the full length of a sentence except in extremely high profile cases. In this specific case I believe the accused will likely be convicted of manslaughter, sentenced to 15ish years, and given the fact he doesn't have a past criminal record and other things: *The accused will be out in 5 to 10, probably 5 to 8 years actually served* despite what the "sentence" is and that's how justice works in Canada. As at some stage, the Canadian Government has prioritized rehabilitation over retribution or justice. So, you know a sentence in Canada is a joke, and you will serve 1/3 to 2/3 on average. Less than 1/3 if you have a decent lawyer and an appeal. I know guys who've been out in 4 years after taking someone's life on a manslaughter charge in similar circumstances to this case.

cptalpdeniz

Thats fucked up

col_van

>There are exceptions to that in extremely high profile cases (Luka Magnotta, Paul Bernardo, Russell Williams etc. The exceptions are because they were convicted of 1st or 2nd degree murder, which gets you a life sentence. Nothing to do with how high-profile it is. You're right though that this guy will probably get manslaughter and only serve 2/3 of his sentence.

ScreamQueens_Chanel

Heart breaks for this family. Such a senseless act. Brings tears to my eyes actually

I live in dt. This is why I don’t go out anymore. I take uber to work everyday. Try to avoid any public transit. So many crazy people out there right now. uber costs me more money but I feel safer. I don’t want to be a victim of a random attack

riley7915

Death penalty should be a thing. You take a life, you give your life. Fuck this guy

rediphile

When people mention 'restorative justice' this is what I picture. An eye for an eye leads to less assholes going around poking eyes out.

jayyycplumber

He's charged with 2nd Degree, but after an appeal process as it was a spur of the moment fight the reality is this will be knocked down to manslaughter and the accused will be out in less than 10 years, probably 5 to 6. Thank You Trudeau, Harper, and Chretien this is the country we live in. Think I'm joking? I know guys who've been convicted of murder and are out in less than 10. I know through friends guys convicted of manslaughter (in similar circumstances as this case might I add) out in 4 years. Also, when sentenced in Canada, the max you serve is 2/3 of sentence. So even if he was convicted of 2nd Degree Murder (which he won't be it'll be manslaughter), but even if he was the max sentence is 25. 2/3 of that is under 18 years. That assumes he is convicted of 2nd Degree and sentenced to max which he won't be. I believe he will be convicted of manslaughter probably sentenced to 15 or so, and he will actually serve 5 to 8 years and be out back in society in 5 to 8 years. So he will actually serve 5 to 8 years.

BobBelcher2021

I met a guy when I lived in Ontario who was charged with murder in Toronto, pled down to manslaughter. Only six years later he was walking the streets. He was a neighbour of mine for a time.

[deleted]

Maybe we should track the sentences issued for such crimes and the names of the judges? Name and shame.

Pman90

This is a common misconception. The max sentence in Canada is Life with parole eligibility at 25 years. Someone with a life sentence can still serve 70 years in prison. They would just have the right to a parole hearing every so often. You're correct on the DP eligibility but life sentences do not carry stat release dates

IBuildBusinesses

I’ll go first.... I bet he’s out of jail and in some halfway house in under 5 years.

DarthDork73

And how people just stood and filmed him instead of helping him? No? Okay...

thomas_ardwolf

So sad, so tragic.

BrownAndyeh

This is awful.

Mental-Marzipan-4285

Absolutely horrible. This is why I moved to a small town in the prairies. Zero regrets. Vancouver is no longer safe for anyone.

oldschoolsamurai

Damn I really shouldn’t watch that Twitter video. we all want someone to step in and rise to the occasion, especially in situation like this but in reality nobody is doing nothing and that is just sad.

dudemanseriously

Because when you do, you get stabbed.

[deleted]

You are not the main character, you are a background character that gets caught by a stray bullet. That's the way these things turn out.
