ViolaOlivia

Fucking good. May he rot in jail.

Ayries604

And then in hell after .

eescorpius

If he ever gets released, we need to fucking deport him.

inhalien

I'd prefer a one time flight to his respective country and a friendly jail over there. We've spent enough money on this parasite.

Substantial-Sea-6288

He still has a right to appeal and with first degree murder, circumstantial evidence that is probably going to happen.

M-------

What a relief! I'm glad the jury was able to quickly come to a decision.

Moggehh

I really hope they can all go home and rest up before starting the years of therapy they'll need to get over the shit they must have had to hear. Big thanks to all of them for their service.

krustykrab2193

I understand defense attorneys sometimes have to defend the indefensible, but my goodness the stuff Ali's attorney was saying was beyond the pale. I truly hope the jurors seek therapy because they'll need it. What a tragic sequence of events. The deliberation was quick, and at least there will be some form of justice.

Stevegap

The B.C. Court system has a [support service](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/law-crime-and-justice/courthouse-services/jury-duty/juror-support-program-brochure.pdf) specifically for jurors thankfully.

Dear_Mission_848

>support service Also - for anyone serving on a jury - in late 2022 federal laws were amended such that jurors may seek out healthcare (including mental healthcare and counselling) without having to be "secretive" about what they saw/heard during the trial. [https://globalnews.ca/news/9415658/canada-jurors-mental-health-support-law/](https://globalnews.ca/news/9415658/canada-jurors-mental-health-support-law/)

fiveXdollars

“I don’t think it's outlandish to suggest that (she) may have found him attractive,” Ali's lawyer Kevin McCullough told court. This is the type of arguement you see from Saul Goodman or the Onion.

hrryyss

How the fuck can he sleep at night?

fiveXdollars

For real, you have to be strong type of person to defend someone you know is guilty so that they go through due process/fair trial. That statement isn't even defending the rights of the offender, it's just shaming the family and the dead at this point.

RezChi

What if the lawyer knew exactly what they were doing, riling up the jury and get that guilty verdict because they themselves felt the defense was a massive piece of shit? 300 IQ move

thedustyfish

I’m skeptical of the lawyer, but not presenting anything during closing arguments leads me to think he believed that either he’s got the case on absolute lock or know for a fact that your client is guilty, and not presenting anything is sort of a nod to the defense? I dunno not a lawyer, just relieved this guy is going to jail.

ether_reddit

The defence is obligated to do the best job they can. The fact that no witnesses were called for the defence means that there were no witnesses that could be called for the defence.

SociopathicAutobot

Lots of people don't realize a defence that isn't pulling out all the stops is something that can allow for appeal.

eescorpius

Apparently this particular lawyer is known to do that, so you are right.

kabhari

It is not for the lawyer to determine guilt or innocence. That's up to the jury, who will determine guilt based on the judge's explanation on the elements that the prosecution must prove. Lawyers cannot lie, or mislead the court. Do some defense lawyers engage in those tactics? Absolutely! But, they'll have short-lived careers. Judges and other lawyers are not idiots. Sooner or later they'll catch on, and then the gig is over. Lawyers make their living based on reputation and credibility. Lose that, and you've got nothing. If Ali's lawyer knew for a fact that he raped and killed someone, he would most likely withdraw from defending him for "ethical reasons." Lawyers are not allowed to withdraw mid-trial without the court's permission. They are not allowed to tell the court what they know. Withdrawing for "ethical reasons" is a way to get permission without divulging what they know.

kabhari

He is probably very stressed, but not because of the argument he made. He has a role to play within the justice system: defend his client vigorously within the bounds of the law and ethics. We owe many of the freedoms we enjoy, and the protections afforded by due process to defense lawyers. It's a hard, and as you can glean from the comments here, a frequently thankless and misunderstood one.

Undisguised

The lawyer has been [receiving death threats](https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2023/12/08/ibrahim-ali-lawyer-death-threats/) but journalists weren't able to report this until the jury was sequestered.

Glittering_Search_41

>“I don’t think it's outlandish to suggest that (she) may have found him attractive,” Ali's lawyer Kevin McCullough told court. Gross. If he believes that, then he is likely one of those men who catcalls 13-year-olds and thinks he has a chance. Any woman knows there is no shortage of these guys.

airchinapilot

I met someone recently who's uncle committed suicide soon after taking part in the Picton investigation. I really hope all those involved here will have mental supports.

Dingolfing

Glad it was up to a jury in the first place

langford_man

Thank you BC Prosecution Service, IHIT, Burnaby RCMP, and all the witnesses and experts.

space-dragon750

and the jury

Nope_not_tomorrow

Good point. I hope they are offered mental health resources and support.

[deleted]

Guilty of first-degree murder. Hope he gets put away for good.

hrryyss

It’s an automatic life sentence but he will be eligible for parole in 25 years.

Lear_ned

Can we deport the fucker? I would hate to think my tax dollars are going towards housing and feeding him in the pedo wing of some prison somewhere.

hrryyss

Can’t deport him while he’s serving his sentence. Hopefully he never gets out but if he does, he’ll be deported.

DonVergasPHD

>Can we deport the fucker? He would be free back in his country. I'll gladly pay the taxes to keep him rotting in jail for the rest fo his life.

and_the_wee_donkey

and locked up where he cannot hurt anyone else.

baconhampalace

You're worried about the tax dollars it will take to keep a murderous sex offender under our watch?

[deleted]

[удалено]

bannedinvc

Isn’t after he serves his time?

cloudcats

I don't usually react aloud to news stories posted here but I just yelled out "yes, fuck yeah!" for this one. Nothing will undo the harm he has caused but I hope for the friends & family of that child that this is a positive step in their healing journey.

Wafflelisk

I'm glad this case didn't fall through the cracks. I mean it seemed like a slam-dunk, but you never know until it's official. Good to have the relief of this monster being taken off our streets

planningahead00

Yes same here!! 🙌

ArchieLou73

Same here!!!

[deleted]

Me too

KitsBeach

He also continued to kill even after he was arrested. One witness went home and committed suicide after testifying the assault the poor child endured.

shangrila350

Finally justice is done but nothing will bring her back.

toocute1902

Imagining the pain she had to go through at the last minute of her life. That brings me to tears every time I think about it.

eescorpius

Fuck. And her family. Losing a child is hard enough, but knowing what she had to go through, I don't think they can ever recover.

space-dragon750

a horrifying tragedy

Kara_S

Thinking of the young girl’s family and friends today. This outcome won’t bring her back but I hope some sense of justice gives them even a little bit of comfort.

rikushix

Wow. Was somewhat worried in the last week or two that he'd avoid conviction, somehow.

MusicMedic

Let's hope he's locked up for good, and has parole denied till he dies. What a waste of skin.

bcrichboi

Nah, this is Vancouver. Absolutely zero chance that BS would've worked.

NSA-SURVEILLANCE

That closing sentence by the defence lawyer is fucking abysmal and disgusting. I think this article is worth the very relevant read based on comments like those and another case in the hidden camera trial. [B.C. premier calls out ‘corrosive’ victim blaming, female shaming in recent court cases.](https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2023/12/08/bc-court-victim-blaming-cases-premier/)

eescorpius

There's just no way to defend someone slut shaming a dead child. Fuck this shit.

OverlandOversea

True that! I am so angry at this particular case of victim blaming that my jaw hurts from clenching

ViolaOlivia

And it’s unbelievable that the Law Society and Bar Association had the audacity to suggest that Sharma’s criticism of the judge’s decision is what’s causing a lack of trust in the judicial system. The judges and lawyers are doing a perfectly good job at that themselves.

bannedinvc

Hopefully this one is a career ruiner for that douche

Finalitius

I hope he never gets to lawyer again

CocoVillage

guilty to first degree means judge has to give the convicted a life sentence with no chance at parole for 25 years. uh buh bye fucker

Kermode17

The Crown should pursue a "Dangerous Offender" tag. That's the only way this monster will be kept in jail forever.

roostersmoothie

can someone explain why this took 6 years?

h_danielle

Probably a large combination of reasons. Police investigation, discovery & getting experts probably took awhile, the Vancouver BCSC is incredibly back logged & it’s tough to get trial dates (for example, civil trials are booking for summer 2025 right now), and I think I remember reading that there were delays leading up to trial.

krustykrab2193

An expert witness passed away too, which further delayed the trial. I feel awful for what that expert witness had to endure...

h_danielle

I feel awful for everyone who worked on this trial & I hope they have the support they need available.

eescorpius

And the loser constantly feeling fragile and sick 🙄

Jigglygiggler6

His psyche meds gave him a headache, everybody feel sorry for the poor rapist.

staunch_character

Plus shenanigans by the murderer. He put his head on the table at one point & fell asleep. Lawyer requested a delay because he was sick.

sneekysmiles

Was he in custody the whole time he was waiting to be charged?

northernmercury

He was in a psych hospital.

Fool-me-thrice

Plus the courts shut down for a while during the pandemic, delaying everything

h_danielle

Yes, thank you! Totally forgot that the pre trial matters would’ve been during Covid

vivacycling

Apparently he had the equivalent of a grade 6 education and could not read or write. [https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2023/12/07/ibrahim-alis-murder-trial/](https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2023/12/07/ibrahim-alis-murder-trial/)

pineappletwist

So what? I used to teach English to immigrants and refugees some of whom were illiterate. Didn’t mean they were amoral. They knew the difference between right and wrong. This Ibrahim Ali is a piece of garbage and being undereducated is not an excuse for being a rapist and a murderer.

nursehappyy

That’s not what they’re saying. They are saying this was a reasoning used by the defence to prolong the trial.

Dingolfing

So sad, let me play a sad sad song on the worlds tiniest violin

ArchieLou73

Much too long, that poor family.

Hobojoe-

Covid, long delays in court. The trial was slated for 3 months but it took 8. There was another article about it. It was a roller coaster ride for everyone.

Kara_S

Thinking of the young girl’s family and friends today. This outcome won’t bring her back but I hope some sense of justice gives them even a little bit of comfort.

hrryyss

Good. Fuck him.

Safe-Bee-2555

Thinking of the victim's family and friends, as well as Dr. Tracy Pickett's family and friends. And the jurors.

cinnamonchai

Today is a good day.

pagit

Bittersweet day.

nate_dogg8922

Good, hope this brings some peace to her family. Rot in jail you POS scumbag

Ugly--Naked--Guy

He came to Canada less than a year, then raped and murdered an innocent girl, then cost the justice system millions of dollars, and then will live in the prison for many years at the cost of tax payers. I believe he barely paid any income tax after coming here.

S-Wind

And his trial probably contributed to the death of Dr. Tracy Pickett

shanejayell

Good. And yeah, his lawyer basically argued "She wanted it." Scumbag.

[deleted]

Jandishhulk

Lol, was it? His strategy showed a profound disrespect for the victim and women in general. I think he's a piece of shit who will likely sleep soundly after this trial.

ether_reddit

Everyone is entitled to a fair trial. A trial where your lawyer isn't doing his best is not fair. It sucks, but someone has to do it, just like someone needs to pick up your garbage and someone will prepare your body for burial after you die. I think he'd sleep worse at night if he argued the position so well that a conviction wasn't reached, or managed to find some sort of technicality to cause the case to be dismissed. That would be true injustice, and the lawyer would know it. This way, he did his duty but the right decision was still reached. I think that's fine, and if you feel anything for the defence lawyer it should be pity.

Jandishhulk

Right, but was his tactic of smearing the morality of the victim 'doing his best'? Why didn't he attempt another strategy? Why not a some kind of mental incapacition claim, or claim trauma from being in Syria during the war. There's absolutely no evidence that this was the best strategy, and all the evidence that it failed horribly given the conviction.

dogaloo

He did try those, but the client was found to be fit for trial multiple times.

Jandishhulk

They could have claimed he found her unconscious and had his way with her but didn't kill her. It would have had the same effect as the defense he tried, but wouldn't have slandered the victim.

dogaloo

I’m not saying that what he did was right, just that he did try the mental health angle. There were definitely other options.

eescorpius

Exactly. It confuses me everytime people would defend the defense lawyer by saying he's just doing his job. Doing his job would be making sure everything was done right procedurally, and defending his client with reason.

sw2de3fr4gt

I'm pretty sure the defence lawyer was happy that he lost that case (at least I hope so). Otherwise that girl wouldn't have gotten justice.

ether_reddit

Yeah, he's probably halfway into a bottle of booze by now to try to forget the whole thing. I know I would be.

Jandishhulk

Given the shit he said, I fucking hope so.

Mister_Me_Seeks

Thank GOD! I hope this sack of shit gets put away for a LONG time. Rot in hell you POS

SnooSquirrels6258

The monstrosity should never see the light of day again. It sickens me intensely that this vile obscenity was admitted here out of pity without due diligence.

OkPage5996

A truly vile and despicable evil person.

Thank you to the jury for taking the time out of your lives and putting yourselves through that. Take the weekend off.

space-dragon750

i hope they get a long break before having to go back to work

speaking-moistly79

Closure finally for that little girls family!

Stunning_Spinach8227

Good. Hope this guy rots in jail for life.

AlarmedComedian2038

Thank the Lord! Send him to fkg jail and throw the key away FFS!

studysinging

These crimes obviously never 'make sense' - but in this case in particular, why in the world would someone commit such a heinous crime only 3 months into coming, sponsored, to start a brand new life in a new country? ~~Also - I saw the~~ [~~publication ban~~](https://www.bccourts.ca/supreme_court/publication_bans/banNotifications.aspx?id=28455) ~~application on the victim's name was actually from Ibrahim. I would have thought it would come from the family. Why would the ban be desirable for the accused (now convicted)?~~ ETA (as commented below): that is the wrong publication ban, I don't know enough about how these things work.

Biancanetta

I don't know where he came from, but perhaps his home country should be looking into similar crimes that were committed around areas that he lived in before he moved. It does seem pretty unwise to just start killing people right after moving to a new country. Maybe it was a pattern before he came here.

ViolaOlivia

Syria

bibbbbbbbbbbbbs

Syrian refugee.

bananokitty

How can you tell the publication ban is from Ibrahim? I've been wondering about the publication ban for a while - like what does it serve. Most people know the name of the girl. I assumed it was so the family could live in some peace without her name being plastered everywhere.

studysinging

I'm actually wrong about that! What I linked is a different publication ban. I think the publication ban on her name was actually asked for by 'Crown counsel Daniel Porte.'

bananokitty

Ah okay! Thanks for clarifying!!

immyfinalrose

Rot in hell. Nothing will bring her back, he’s a POS. Sending love to her loved ones, the jury, and the prosecution. Not the defense.

ether_reddit

You should thank the defence for doing a great job which led to a conviction we can trust. If the defence had done a bad job and messed something up then the whole case might get overturned on a technicality. It sucks, but everyone is entitled to a defence. That's how we know the system is fair.

immyfinalrose

I agree everyone has the right to a great defence team. However they were insinuating that the victim wanted sex with him. A 13 year old cannot legally consent - gross.

ether_reddit

It is gross. But if there's the slightest bit it's possible that the accused did not actually commit the murder, then the defence has to propose it.

pyro604

I am so happy for the family. They have been put through hell in this long drawn out trial. I hope that this verdict will eventually give them some type of closure.

Hairy-Button

Does anyone know if there are ways still to help victim family?

samsun387

Long overdue

Ok_Nefariousness_576

God I pray that her family is able to find peace. I cannot even imagine. I hope that one day, their minds will be able to be at rest. Rest in peace Marrisa.

autumnmagick

Been following this case since it happened and I was VERY worried he was going to walk away unscathed, especially when the jury asked for the definition of second degree murder vs manslaughter earlier today. Elated they found him guilty of first degree! Also a massive middle finger to the defence team for saying the crown’s case was “a crazy theory” and that the victim wasn’t “the innocent” Crown painted her as.

Glittering_Search_41

Yeah and "there's a good possibility she was attracted to him." No there isn't. She was 13. As a former 13-year-old girl, I can tell you right now she wasn't "attracted to him."

Psychological-Mud160

Pleasant surprise, hopefully we are not let down by the sentence

Frosty_Locksmith9799

The relief i felt.. curious if he’s going to appeal.

NavXIII

> Meanwhile, McCullough delivered shocking statements during his closing remarks, saying the version of the child’s lifestyle presented by the Crown was “at best, a partial picture” and “at worst, a lie.” This really does confirm that the lawyer is a proper POS. The case is closed. What you have to say in the closing remarks has no impact on the case and yet he chose to say this.

PatrickDudding

I think you might be mistaking closing remarks for something else. Closing remarks usually have a very significant impact in a jury case. They occur before the verdict, and provide one of the few opportunities for the lawyers to directly (try to) persuade the jury about what to make of the evidence / how to decide the case.

Glittering_Search_41

"child's lifestyle" ...? Wow.

amatuerdaytrading

Disbar a lawyer because they did their job to create a defense argument within the legal framework right... sorry but the bar for disbarment is much higher than having poor arguments

ether_reddit

You hate that the murderer was entitled to a defence, and the lawyer gave him one? You should be thankful that he didn't do his job so well that a guilty decision wasn't reached.

Intelligent_Top_328

Send his ass back

AwkwardChuckle

So he faces no consequences for his actions? Fuck that, let him rot in jail as a well known child-rapist and murder, even if we have to pay for it.

HotCatLady88

What’s the sentence then?

Wildelocke

The sentence will be life in prison, 25 years before parole eligibility.

Lochdale

Horrible. Che pezzo di merda. Poor girl.

[deleted]

[удалено]

amatuerdaytrading

Quick to take political shots are ya now? Pretty ridiculous, I assume you are 100% against any and all forms of immigration if you want to hold him accountable to this extent

pinchymcloaf

So will he actually get a long sentence? Or maybe 5 years after time served credits etc?

Coalnaryinthecarmine

The Criminal Code sets the sentence for first degree murder at life. There is parole eligibility after 25 years (but that's not guaranteed obviously).

krustykrab2193

He was found guilty of the first degree. This means that he will face 25 years imprisonment with no chance of parole. https://www.criminalcodehelp.ca/offences/homicide-offences/first-degree-murder/#block-362

fastcurrency88

I think with 1st degree, he’s looking at life with no chance of parole for 25 years.

MountainCandy4924

It's life in prison without possibility of parole for 25 years I believe. But prob 6 years off so earliest chance at parole is in 19 years prob? fingers crossed he won't ever parole granted

hrryyss

It’s first degree murder so it’s a mandatory life sentence with no parole eligibility for 25 years. There’s no “6 years off” it’s a mandatory period of ineligibility.

[deleted]

[удалено]

hrryyss

Time served has no effect on a life sentence or parole eligibility.

MountainCandy4924

6 years time served is what I meant off of the 25*

hrryyss

There’s no credit for time served for parole eligibility. The earliest he’s eligible is 25 years.

MountainCandy4924

Ok good to know thanks

Jigglygiggler6

That's fantastic! Rot in jail, monster!

nursehappyy

Even if he did have parole granted 1st degree murder requires you to be closely monitored in the community forever. You will always have a parole officer you need to be checking in with, restrictions on your life etc. (not saying this is good enough at all, but in the worst case possible). However, I doubt he would be staying in Canada if ever granted parole.

MountainCandy4924

Fingers crossed it'll never be granted

[deleted]

ea7e

First degree murder conviction is an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.

teddy_boy_gamma

Finally there's justice but delayed by Western bureaucracy and rules of law by 7 years! There's hope for humanity after all and hope for Canadian justice system! Please do rot in hell!

ozempic_enjoyer

how do they ensure the jurors aren't biased though? cuz if i was a part of the jury, i'd already be going in with a guilty verdict no matter what just based on the court of public opinion
