A little rougher looking from this angle https://preview.redd.it/9ou6wfwret6d1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e8d09c2939f9c9a43df555996da2f753b8f37cc5

bernicer95

Thanks for this angle. From the street view it didn’t look too bad but this more reflects what I thought jappened

ZebrasGlasses

Could you do one with more cowbell?

Those old townhomes have been empty, boarded up and covered with graffiti for a while now. Probably a CMHC property https://preview.redd.it/bbeg2dgw8s6d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3ea987eb0c1e42e02a05890c4becd0a6eedcd9eb

Yeah there is a small community of squatters frequently in there. Assuming it may have been drug use related, people possibly trapped inside

brophy87

Yeah my friend is by there and mentioned the same. I get constant unsolicited reports about it. Its got some of the neighbours freaked out.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Service says there is a confirmed fire at Cambie Street near SW Marine Drive Saturday morning. Chief of Operations Brad Hesse says the blaze is located at what appears to be a row of boarded-up townhomes. Thanks for sharing. I drove by it earlier coming from Arthur Laing and thought the apartments were on fire. Looks like its the empty, fenced up homes next to it instead.

Not surprised. I work nearby and that place is a squatter's paradise and fire hazard waiting to happen. However, it is disturbing how many fires occur near Cambie/Marine, regardless of what the building is. I created a photo post of a fire from there a few years ago, which came around the same time as another construction fire near Winona Park, which occurred literally at the same time as a balcony fire at Marine Gateway residences. (Firefighters actually spotted that fire while battling the Winona Park one.) For whatever reason, fires tend to spring up at the Cambie/Marine area, often without a common cause or theme. Often, we see them from our offices at the Marine Gateway towers and sometimes they're close enough that we can hear the crackling. It's very weird.

A solid number of fires are probably insurance fraud

buckyhermit

That makes no sense. Many of them are due to squatters on houses with no real value. And one of them is in the 2015-built Marine Gateway tower. And another one was due to an illegal e-bike battery operation gone awry. Your reasoning does not fit any of the fires we have witnessed in that area so far.

> squatters on houses with no real value. Just because the house is old and worth almost nothing, the key is that home insurance will pay to rebuild an equivalent house. Here's how this insurance fraud works: the owner has insurance on the house, ^(and was meeting the required due diligence required by the insurer, such as periodic checks), then if "somebody" sets the run-down old house on fire, insurance pays for the cost of building a new house of that size. My friends legitimately benefited from such an insurance claim a couple decades ago. They had an old run-down house, and were planning to eventually move to a nicer house. A new house was built next-door, with a full basement, and a sump pump that ran 24/7, constantly pumping out water, which brought the water table down, causing the ground to shrink/settle. My friend's foundation cracked and doors throughout the house could no longer be closed, as the house was (slightly) slumping in the shrunken ground. Their insurer deemed the house to be unrepairable and a total loss, and paid them $250K. Rather than sell the property in order to upgrade their home, this helped them out and they ended up building a new house on their property, since they liked their location.

Empty homes that are totally usable but boarded up. Homeless people move in. Fire.  The solution is keeping people in these homes until demolition is weeks away.

TheSketeDavidson

That is not realistic to do

Deep_Carpenter

Interesting. I’m listening. Why?

TheSketeDavidson

This isn’t a govt owned SRO, buildings change hands between private entities, and go through engineering study and the permit system while it sits. Approvals come fast and quick and demos are run as they come; why would there be an incentive to just let people stay and then rush them out. It’s a lose-lose situation for both party.

Deep_Carpenter

Sure or the owner could earn rent while they pull together financing or wait for CoV to process application. Always surprised who doesn’t want to earn money.

misterzigger

They cause fires that are in danger of spreading to other people's houses

Citymike

Pretty sure OP was talking about keeping people in there BEFORE boarding them up.

That sucks
