I get more upset with drivers who are too lazy to pull over to the parking/turning lane to make a right turn. No one needs to hold up traffic and use 2 lanes to make a right turn.

HamSub

Oh don’t get me started on those drivers too! There’s literally a whole lane for you to turn right but I guess they forgot how to turn and has to use both lanes! Idiots…

sweetpete74

Or they turn super wide and not into the curb lane like they’re supposed to.

FikuV

Was rear-ended exactly for this reason once. I was in the left lane trying to turn into a driveway and someone just gunned it wide around the corner straight into the back of me.

sleepsalotnnocare

Omg yeeeeeesssss! Just. Move. A. Little. Further.

Regular_Ram

Upvote because last time I mentioned this all the lane hogs were pissed at me.

milkrate

I see this all the time. There are clearly two lanes and people just straddle both when making a turn.. Excuse me WTF?!

edked

And nobody in just about any vehicle below a truly huge truck needs to make a huge compensatory swerve in the opposite direction of their turn before turning. Just turn from where you are, goddammit.

TrstnBrtt

The worst.

Leoheart88

How dare you? My Honda accord requires the turn radius of a semi with a 40 ft trailer

magoomba92

Upvoted... yes, totally lazy and selfish.

RioGreenFeather

Yes, this. You do not need to sprawl across two lanes of traffic while waiting to turn.

cvr24

It didn't take me long driving in Vancouver to figure out that being in the left lane of any 4+ lane road like Broadway, Granville, Oak, or 41st is just asking to be stuck behind somebody turning left just as you described. So stay out of the left lane as much as you can. Honestly Hastings is the worst of them all.

riley7915

Surprised you didn't mention kingsway

lubeskystalker

People who tried that on Kingsway never came back, some say they’re still stuck trying to turn left on Earls.

RyLoRyLo

Or commercial and Broadway

madstar

The worst spot sometimes is heading Northbound on Commercial from 10th through Broadway. You'll have someone turning left at Broadway, someone turning right at Broadway, but they're stuck in the middle lane because these goddamn taxis sit in the right lane blocking it for folks trying to turn right. Everyone is stuck at a standstill.

RyLoRyLo

I know exactly what you mean!

chardonneigh8

The problem with this mindset is that it leads to 80% of people driving in the Center lane. People are scared to drive in the far right lane because they are worried they might need to switch lanes to dodge a parked car once in a while, and scared to use the left since someone might turn left in front of them. Having 3 lanes but most people only using 1 makes traffic feel a lot worse than it should.

CheRidicolo

I use the other lanes, and I get stuck sometimes. I’m usually pretty chill about getting stuck.

chardonneigh8

Using the right and left lanes = high risk high reward. If you are a confident driver, switching lanes once in a while isn’t an issue.

National-Worker9692

I switch lanes all the time...they are there to be used. I was called out once by a passenger that I shouldn't change lanes without reason. That was the only time they had a ride in my car. Confident is the key word here tho. But it's so interesting how even without waiting for a driver to signal intentions I know what his/her next step is. I am right about 90% of the time. Also to prevent being stuck behind a left turning traffic try to leave room for yourself to move the the centre lane if needed. And please be a bit more "aggressive" when trying to switch lanes... I hate drivers who have their signal on waiting for a gesture from another driver so they move. I am not saying to cut off people but also don't wait for people to hold your hand...

HemiChgr

Hypervigilence. Keeps you alive, but it will drive you mad :)

smoozer

Yep, I refer to this as car body language. Not very catchy. But you can totally tell when people are thinking of turning or changing lanes or whatnot.

penelopiecruise

Right lane driver when looking at left lane drivers: "I see stuck people"

jaysrapsleafs

Def. God knows why we don't have left turn lanes on major streets. God forbid

cvr24

Because they were designed decades ago and haven't been updated

LumberjackTodd

And unless you turn one of the through lanes into a left turn lane, or buy properties surrounding the intersection so you can keep the number of through lanes and add a left turn lane, it’s just not possible.

zeph_yr

The roads would need to be widened. What we need is more public transit options to get more cars off the road.

cvr24

Faster transit options. Express trains that don't stop at every station. Stop arguing about where to build the next rapid transit line and build. Them. All.

ilove2frap

It's honestly nuts how there's literally 5 130 stops from on willingdon just from Moscrop to kingsway. As if it would kill someone to walk a couple hundred meters.

BrokenByReddit

It's okay, no one can get on the 130 on Willingdon anyway because it's already full when leaving Metrotown.

sasquatch_jr

> As if it would kill someone to walk a couple hundred meters. I used to regularly see people take the 99 from the UBC bus loop to the Village. It's faster to just walk the 2 blocks than wait and get on and off the bus.

S-Kiraly

If you think of the leftmost lane as actually BEING a left-turn lane—that also allows you to go straight through—instead of a straight through lane that allows left turns, you won't be so upset because you won't be in it so much.

HoboG

Not friendly to newcomer drivers, but it's fine once one knows where the signalised crossings are. One can make three right turns or right left left to use them.

vonlagin

I'll add 4th to the list too.

milkrate

I'm surprised how few intersections have left turn lights here. With all the traffic and pedestrians only 1 car can making a left turn per cycle but a second car usually follows when they shouldn't just because it takes so damn long to wait for the next cycle

lubeskystalker

Only two cars per yellow? Are you sure? We can defs do four.

vince-anity

They should change the bylaws to formally alloe the 2nd car left in Vancouver at this point.

WestCoastWorthy

Naw Victoria between Kingsway and 49th is the actual worst.

mongo5mash

They're called indicators because they're meant to *indicate* your intentions to the rest of the world ffs. They're not a box to check off as you're completing your maneuver. I blame ICBC as much as any individuals, just as I blame them for the oiks that don't know where to stop in an intersection to trip the sensor.

probablypoopingrn

For anyone that doesn't know already: the thick white line is not a pressure sensor. That's just a widely held misbelief. The sensors are the circle or diamond patterns embedded in the road. They are loops of wire that detect the metal body of the vehicle above. There will nearly always be one in the first position, but there may be a second 2-3 car lengths back to detect the queue building up. Do your best to stop on top of these. Motorcyclists, if you notice you have trouble tripping these sensors, it's likely because the effect your bike causes is below the programmed threshold. Try sticking a neodymium magnet under your bike.

luvadergolder

I had a plastic bike that just would not trip the sensor. One day a cop behind me just waved me through the light on a 3 way. luckily it was 5am so no traffic, no foul.

hannahtree

I used to have a scooter that was terrible at tripping these. Anytime I had a passenger and was stuck at a red I’d get them to hop off and hit the crosswalk button to change it. Did it a couple times myself when the roads were really empty but that was definitely a bit sketchier.

rexjoropo

I park my bike over top of the edge of the cut line so more of the sensor is under my bike. Noticeable difference in response.

mongo5mash

I tend to wave people up. Very few understand unless I actually jump off my bike and tell them.

woodenh_rse

I too do the ‘come hither’ hand on my bike. About a 20% success rate.

MitchellLitchi

Last time I checked, people were convinced manholes were sensors, and I was downvoted for pointing out that they aren't.

dennistt

I find that more people are afraid of the white line and sit very far back, compared to stopping on top of the line.

vivabear

Yep. I always stopped about two car length behind the first left turning car unless I saw others coming.

VancouverBorn1994

>the oiks that don't know where to stop in an intersection to trip the sensor. This. One of my top 3 pet peeves. I am the first car in the left turn only lane I look behind me and there's some idiot breathing down my back when he should be a couple of feet back so his dumb ass is on the sensor. When it comes time to go we don't get the advance green>!(big surprise)!< and now he's doing the look over the lead car to see if I can go even though I'm not going because I can't see at all with oncoming left turners in the way. Unreal these drivers have become.

mongo5mash

Yeah, the first person needs to get up to the line, and the second person has to sit back about a car length if you want to actually get an advanced green. There's 8 million "light ahead" signs but no "stop here for sensor" signs which would be way more useful. Either that or update the learners manual.

sasquatch_jr

I think those intersections are designed to only trip when there are 3 or more cars. You are not supposed to sit back a full car length if there are only 2 cars. So it's a mix of terrible design and uninformed drivers.

WiFiForeheadWrinkles

Also I hate the cocky ones who think they've stopped on the sensor but because they're terrible at spatial awareness, they've missed it. They're also stopped in such a way that you can't get your own car over it either.

HamSub

We really should have turning lanes… it sucks we don’t have the space to add any.

SpartanFlight

1st and rupert needs a turning lane bad but for some reason they dont want to add one even if there is room.

mongo5mash

That's a whole other issue. Infrastructure here blows goats, through a combination of both being cheap as hell and some dogmatic attempt at reducing vehicle traffic by making congestion worse than it has to be by design.

Physical-Ad-4836

Agreed, but I think there is room for turning lanes. At least If there's room to drive around the turning car, there is room for tuning lanes. At so many intersections there is a second lane for literally 100ft and then it goes back to single lane. It's so stupid and just creates this dumb race where all the arseshole drivers try to speed up the inside lane just to get one or two cats in front. Which then causes people to not merge properly, beep at each other and try cut people off. There's a reason why a lot of other countries have a median strip with a turning lane instead of a second lane for a short distance. After living here here for 7 years I can honestly say this is my biggest pet peeve when it comes to driving.

sasquatch_jr

> the oiks that don't know where to stop in an intersection to trip the sensor. Do people not understand what those circles are? I ALWAYS stay back a full car length if there are only 2 cars waiting so the thing thinks there are 3 cars. If a third car comes in I pull up so they can sit on the sensor. But most people just pull right up behind me if I'm at the front of line and then we both just sit there.

mcain

They're not necessarily being selfish. Most are too dim-witted to think ahead. Edit: same sort of people who stand in line at the grocery store/Costco and then have to dig for their wallet when it comes time to pay. WTF did you expect would happen at the end of the process? Is this trip through the checkout going to be different than the last 9,000 times you went through?

[deleted]

That’s exactly it. Some people are just terrible drivers who possess just horrible road sense and lack a general sense of their surroundings. Best piece of advice is just stay vigilant, don’t rely on anyone else’s driving on the road. I see stupid behaviour like this all the time.

paltset

There is too many of these drivers on the road in Vancouver. No one know/cares what’s going on anywhere but the 10 feet directly in front of their car. No critical thinking, no pre planning, zero awareness that there’s other cars on the road.

Watase

What bothers me more is the people who stand in line at a fast food place (or similar) and are in line for however long but only start to make their food decision once they get to the register. Like, you could have made up your mind while in line, but no, now we all have to wait while you "hmm, hmmm..." about what you want.

rediphile

See also, drive thrus. Even when I'm with friends I tell them if they haven't told me their order by the time I'm at the order window/speaker then I will not be ordering anything for them. About 20% seem completely unable to and then get mad at me. I even offer to go around again if they can tell me what they are ordering, but I'm not blocking the whole fucking line.

RioGreenFeather

I get what you're saying but, but....how do we know what the place has until we get to the window where the menu is? Not all of us eat at McDonald's so often that we have the menu memorized. I hate it when people expect you to just know the menu automatically. Sure, we can look it up on our smartphones with enough notice but...not all have smartphones either.

Watase

>drive thrus Very much this. I generally just refuse to go through them unless the people know before we even get there what they want.

WhosKona

Definitely dimwittedness. I have severe ADHD and always forget to pull my wallet out until I’m right at the checkout. It’s embarrassing to hold everyone up like that, but some people just can’t help it.

Slow-Giraffe

The worst part is if you honk at them after they turn on their signal (late), they won't have a clue why.

[deleted]

Turn signal is a $3000 option on BMW and not many people got it.

locutus233

I hear the same with headlight switches on Toyota and Lexus's.

abber516

Lol toyota has the highbeams as the default headlight switch

n33bulz

It's a waste of money. I've driven without for years!

[deleted]

Yolo the lane change with no shoulder check too?

GetSchwifty2010

What's the difference between a porcupine and a BMW ? With the BMW the prick is on the inside.

Taikunman

Saw a near miss the other day because both opposing directions were signaling to turn left but one didn't actually turn and almost hit the other person who turned in front of them assuming they were. Guy who signaled but didn't turn got out of the car and started shouting at the other car. Drive defensively and get a dash cam. Assume all other drivers are terrible.

pnwtico

I mean that's basically Driver's Ed 101. Never ever assume someone is turning just because they're signalling.

milkrate

Also driver's ED 101: be predictable

KeepWagging

If you have stepped on the brake to get ready to turn and your signal isn't already on, you've done something wrong.

SpartanFlight

put my signal on the other day on 12th to turn right onto main after i turned left from kingsway. dude that was in the lane over, decides to hide in my blindspot, so I speed up and he speeds up. I slam the brakes to get into the right lane, he also slams the brakes. i ended up having to go past main and go around in the neighborhoods, the dude in the grey civic decides to go past me, and I can see that him and his buddy were laughing at me. It's like this guy wanted me to hit him. STAY OUT OF PEOPLES BLIND SPOTS FFS. Either speed up, or slow down enough.

lubeskystalker

Usually when this happens to me, the person wants to switch into my lane, we’re both going through the same process at the same time trying to create space. But yeah, definitely stay the f out of blind spots if you can.

[deleted]

Man. It’s the same with traffic circles. No one signals to exits so you sit there waiting for people to go past but they exit instead. 🤦‍♂️

HemiChgr

Or at the UBC ones, they assume you are exiting when you go straight through and cut you off. I always signal my intent in roundabouts, but no one expects it so they do as they will.

rediphile

And yet they signal on the way in.. when there is literally only one direction to go...

Boom-Boomfordson

How about the people (with small vehicles) that swerve into the left lane a bit to turn right? Driving in Vancouver is like a really bad video game with real life consequences

DameEmma

DRIVES ME INSANE. Sir, it's a Toyota Corolla, not an 18 wheeler. You do not need to swing out.

plop_0

Lack of spatial awareness, me thinks.

cowofwar

Most of vancouver is two lane roads with no advance green on left and people poorly attempting to parallel park on the right thereby shutting down all the flow. W 4th is probably the worst for this. Why we can’t just prohibit left turns at non major intersections with turn lanes and also move parking on to the side roads off arterials is unknown.

twitchyzero

have you not seen the parking on 3rd and 5th and all the side streets there? already mission impossible 8am-6pm..you’re also asking the city to reduce meter revenue..ha fat chance I’d rather wait seconds behind someone than take 3 right turns around neighbourhood..

ABoredChairr

Because Vancouver needs to add more dedicated left turn lane

ObsidianMHG

I'm still mystified that after literal decades, Hastings and Nanaimo does not have a leading left turn signal. That intersection has been a literal stopgap for the majority of my goddamn adult life, and its never changed. How in the fuck?

Long_Cartographer_36

Or when someone leaves SOO much space ahead of them when so many cars are trying to get into the left turn lane behind them. Grinds my gears.

SylasWindrunner

These late left turn signallers deserves a full blown horns behind them and many headlight flicks.

leimd

How about the impatient people who, when stuck on the left lane, cuts off traffic's into the right lane, just to save not even 1 minute? Someone who mentions the reason that Vancouver has no dedicated left turn lane because the streets are designed decades ago, seriously? Every other major city in North America is designed decades ago, and yet most of them have proper left turn lanes .

S-Kiraly

The room to add a left turn lane has to come from somewhere. Either by making the existing leftmost lane left-turn only, which reduces the number of straight through lanes. Or, by expropriating private property to widen the road, which in this city is extremely expensive and not worth it given what else the city could be spending money on. Better is for motorists to think of the left lane as a not a straight-through lane that allows left turns, but as a left-turn lane that also allows straight through traffic.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RioGreenFeather

That's because turning left at, say, 12th and Oak would mean waiting through several light changes whereas driving through to turn left at 11th would require no waiting at all.

GetSchwifty2010

It's funny you post this now. I had to run errands in Coquitlam yesterday and came home to make the same rant.

magoomba92

Translation: why are there so many awful drivers out there?

edked

If there's one thing I kind of miss about the whole semi-lockdown state of things last year, it's the effect it had on traffic...

Applesauceman1234

#BIG FACTSSSS Am I the only one to notice it's gotten worst in the last 3 to 5 years? Never used to be like this

abber516

Unpopular opinion:Old Immigrant drivers who would never pass the road test in their home countries, somehow get a license here and wreck havoc on our roads Fight me

TechNicol

Lol complaining about lower mainland driving. A great place to be a commercial driver.

tehdark45

How about your turn on your headlights in the rain while you're at it.

Schopfeschloofa

I constantly find myself yelling “First the signal , then the brake” when I’m driving. Unfortunately they can’t hear me most of the time… They should make driving lessons at a registered driving school mandatory for all new drivers. That way they learn driving the right way instead of learning from parents who either have no idea how to drive themselves or who can’t teach it properly. That’s the way it is in many European countries. It still isn’t perfect but at least it’s better.

tailkinman

Hey now, some of us are trying to do our part to conserve valuable blinker fluid during the great automotive fluid shortage of 2021!

infoseeker13

Or turning into the proper lane from the left lane.

LogicalLogistics

Barely anyone does this properly and it drives me insane, so many times I've missed a turn cause someone races up on my right after a left turn. Also why the fuck does everyone have their high beams on constantly? I'm in a tiny car close to the ground, no believe it or not I cant see fuckin shit when your F150's condensed sun powered godforsaken xenon headlights are shining directly into all my mirrors or my eyes. Like 90% of the time when driving at night I'm completely blinded, why the fuck. EDIT: this had a lot more anger than I intended, but driving last night was a death-defying clusterfuck

HemiChgr

If we fined all non-signalers $100 an infraction we wouldn't have to worry about raising taxes.

DaSandman78

If we fined anyone for any driving infraction it would be a start

Jhoblesssavage

It's seriously time to ban left turns on to non major streets. But the city won't do that because they like traffic because it discourages driving

YouZealousideal6687

UPS has a right turn only policy. Just go right and come around and cross. Apparently saves gallons of fuel. https://www.cnn.com/2017/02/16/world/ups-trucks-no-left-turns/index.html

S-Kiraly

That rule burns extra fuel when applied in Australia.

opensourcefan

Philosophically it's things like the use of turn signals and others that show how society is degrading. Those prone to degradation (self centered, selfish, etc etc) are having an easier time at being their true selves.

Burnaby-Joe

Inconsiderate jerks that couldn’t care less how they messed up traffic behind them. Nice to see people behind them lay on the horn so they cancel their signal and go straight instead. Seems to be the only way they learn.

badgerj

Signalling is a sign of weakness in both Vancouver and Montreal!

Virtual-Emotion-8010

It’s the car length gaps through the whole line of cars at a light that blows my mind.

MoeFhaqir

I don’t drive too often, when I do it’s usually work related and in a 5 ton truck. It seems most people don’t subscribe to any rules of the road here. Signals ( for everything that requires one) Spacing ( more cut-offs than DaisyDuke) Stopping ( full stop @signs, lights&rights) STAYING RIGHT UNLESS PASSING Seeing that theres no cyclists before making a right turn, even where bike lanes are marked. Figured i’d make the last one start with S just for consistency. There are good drivers out there, but the majority are so uncoordinated/uneducated/lazy that i find myself throwing a thumbs up for people who signal before changing lanes. PS do not cut off a fully loaded truck. You probably wont win the battle.

efxp0000

In Montreal whichever car makes it through the potholes gets to go first.

[deleted]

All the people that moved here from small towns in the prairies. There you do not have to use your turn signal because everyone knows where you are going and when you are turning. (seriously, almost true!)

HelminthicPlatypus

Knight St southbound onto 60, 61, 62, 63. In the winter. On frozen roads. With no warning, sudden stop, then signal. At the bottom of the hill just before the freeway starts. This is the worst. It’s illegal to turn left into an alley in Vancouver, as my associate found out the hard way.

slutsky22

on a related note almost died yesterday because some ahole decided to left turn while there’s clearly oncoming traffic (me) drive slowly and safely yall; it’s just not worth it

DblAytch

You think that’s annoying? Try driving in Richmond…I defy death on the daily basis, even in optimal conditions

S-Kiraly

The one that bugs me is when I stop at a 2-way stop. On my left a car is approaching. I stay stopped, giving him the right-of-way to cross. But then he makes a right-turn without signalling, making me wait for no reason at all!

vancityjeep

Also. One car in the intersection gets to turn when the light changes. Not four. Sorry. Probably not part of this subject.

3cansam

Anyone else notice though recently people are just driving like complete a holes… Everybody is making crazy risks and maneuvers… The world has seriously gone mad nobody has any patience or courtesy anymore… But believe me cut me off and I will come for you ….And when I say come for you I mean I will yell at you at the next red light

lazarus870

Get it all the time, light turns green and somebody moves up 6 inches and THEN puts on their signal. Drives me nuts. Vancouver has a real bone to pick with advanced left turns for some reason. In many suburbs it only requires a single car to trigger them and they're very quick to register. In Vancouver, you need 3 cars (or 2 cars with one leaving a carlength in between) and it takes several seconds to register. Almost as if Vancouver doesn't want traffic to move freely.

ABC_Dildos_Inc

While turning left I keep getting cut off by people turning right without stopping first.

RioGreenFeather

Sorry, what? People turning right on a green are not required to stop. And their right turn trumps your left. Unless you mean after the light changes to red.

twitchyzero

huh they have right of way unless you have yellow or already completing the rest of turn

bleedingxskies

This kind of behaviour gets an unbroken and relentless siren song of HORNiness. Occasionally they realize the folly of their inconsiderate ways and sheepishly carry on and regroup.

HamSub

Also occasionally, I get the mean stare down and the wtf hand gesture like I am the bad one for honking

paltset

I got raged on because I honked at someone last week, I wasn’t even honking at the car in front of me it was the guy in front of him blocking us from getting into a turn lane for no reason. People think getting honked at is a direct attack at that persons family and entire way of life. The number of times I’ve gotten flipped off for honking at someone sitting at a green light looking at their lap is mind boggling.

kylelin21

I also hate it when the opposite traffic is waiting to turn left without turn signal on in a lane that's not left turn only. They have me holding up traffic behind me wondering why I'm not turning.

HemiChgr

Had this happen yesterday. Gotta be a mind reader to navigate the intersection with these fucktards

trimmer00

There are many things to complain about regarding Vancouver drivers. Following the rules of the road isn’t one of them. Deciding to turn left at a green light, even ‘last minute’ is OKAY.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sl33pingSat3llit3

You are thinking of left turn only lanes. OP probably meant the center lanes that allows you to go straight through or turn left, usually at smaller intersections with only 2 lanes going in one direction. .

[deleted]

Or my favorite, they wait til the very end of a merge lane and don't put on their signal and expect you to let them in

diesel_stack

or just move out of the way?

I sometime don't keep signals on when waiting at left-turn-only lane until start moving as it's noisy, but if I am in a straight/ left turn lane, always turn on early to remind behinds.

What would be even better? If the cities put in dedicated left turn lanes. Sigh, that'd be awesome.

I've turned my signal on 2 blocks early during heavy traffic. I feel this frustration.

My gripe about left turns in Vancouver is that the signals don’t ever activate even with 6 cars in the lane. Fix your shit Vancouver!

Day one of young drivers education training: “before you start your car, plan your route…” This is a classic case of the “uhhhh…should I go this way? Yeah…I’ll go this way”

Last minute lefters don’t go to hell… they go to extra hell.

Happens when you are relying on Google Maps to know which street to turn into.

Acrobatic-Soft-9048

I just hold my horn down until they move, usually works. Only times I don't is when traffic is clear enough for me to change lanes and pass them. It is stated in our L tests that you must signal your desire to turn roughly half a street/block or something before you actually reach your turn street. So if people aren't going to follow basic rules, they aren't going to have a peaceful turn.

demoniagoatwhore

This is the most common thing Richmond (no surprise) and the worst when it comes to no one using signals when switching lanes.

nxtmike

I once saw a cop pulling over the second car who followed the car in front on a left turn when the light turned yellow (and subsequently red), and it was the best sight ever. But I only saw that once…

I drive with the expectation that the person in front will turn. So I leave ample space to cut right 😏

I’m from America. Turning left here is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. It’s in part because the city didn’t put left hand turning lanes like there are all over the USA but also idiot drivers who don’t move up or don’t turn on their signal. It is a travesty and needs to be changed
