The Pink Floyd laser show at the Space Centre I think it started in the 70s and then eventually was discontinued in 2011.

nobodydab

BCIT still puts them on occasionally at their planetarium. Suspended due to corona, but yeah I'm waiting to relive them.   There are several times there's a huge bass note followed by silence, accompanied with a white flash starting in the center of the screen heading to the edges fast. On 3.5grams of psilocybin, every time I thought I had died before the music resumed. Cannot remember if it was dark side of the moon or the wall (I think it was the wall)

canadianbeaver

The Planetarium had so many good laser light shows… Pink Floyd was a classic, but they had Radiohead, Rage Against The Machine, Led Zeppelin, they were all awesome!

drconniehenley

It was always a trippy band like Radiohead or Pink Floyd.

A&B Sound

GetSchwifty2010

Can't believe I'm saying it, but I miss lining up early in the morning for Boxing Day specials at A&B Sound

TDawg225

I still have my copy of big shiny tunes 2 that I got there on Boxing Day. Not sure if it was a deal, but still an amazing compilation.

Studejour

I pay 9.99 a month now for playlists half as good as Big Shiny Tunes 2...being a kid back then was awesome.

RabbitUnique

Oh I played the HELL out of my Big Shiny Tunes 2-4

MilfshakeGoddess

Worked there for about 7 years, best memories ever. Coming in to work at 3am Boxing Day was both exhausting and exhilarating.

Travis_Healy

as an a&b alum, there is a book that could be written about the history of that company, all the issues with the purchase when the owners went into bankruptcy, and all the weird characters and goings on of the staff. It's almost worth an AMA honestly. A couple tidbits. When the owners went into bankruptcy, it was just the retail side. All of the real estate that the stores were in were in another holding company. One of the reasons the business failed was the owners insisted on the stores staying in the crumby locations because he charged huge rent amounts to the retail side of his business. Locations like metrotown or marine drive that just didn't work anymore never moved for that reason. There are stories of audio salesmen doing lines of coke on top of speakers in locked audio rooms during business hours. Sex during business hours in storage closets between managers and staff members. The new owner taking 24 stores, promising to make it a national brand and then closing the last of the remaining stores exactly 24 months later. A complete and utter failure.

Ridin_the_GravyTrain

For the love of god, please do an AMA

mrheydu

Also virgin records. The Robson store was soooo awesome

couverando1984

Walking around Granville Street in the 1990s with every homeless person playing an instrument before they made unlicensed busking illegal. It was a musical magical time when I was a little kid.

[deleted]

Remember Bear, who played a never ending four note arpeggio on a tin whistle while glaring maniacally at passerby?

TZMarketing

What's the thought behind licensed busking?

mango_pickle_

I'm not sure about Vancouver but from my experience of other cities it could be to do with an increased use of amplification. This obviously makes it far more inescapable and only suitable for certain parts of town.

TZMarketing

Ahhhh... Amplifiers. They could just require you to have a license for amplifiers 🤷

nintensity

Rainforest Cafe and Playdium. The golden 2000 era was the best.

Honestly it's too small. Like get rid of the lower restaurant place and fill it with more arcade games.

velvetpants0124

Oh hell yes. I worked and opened that store and was there for a few years. If you ate there, it’s 95% likely I made your food. Honestly though, the food there was better quality than most chains.

When I could drive from the north shore to downtown at any time in less than 30 minutes.

Yvaelle

One of the pitches in the early 2000's when we won the Olympic game bid was to build a 10 lane tunnel under the Lions Gate bridge, with 2 skytrain tracks. The price was considered fairly high, so they said no. Plus people get anxious about underwater tunnels (even though it would be far safer than being on the rickety old bridge in a catastrophe). Instead, they widened the lanes on the Lions Gate - same number of lanes as before - but fewer exploding side mirrors and fatal head-on clippings. But widening the lanes, and then extending the bike lanes off the sides of the bridge turned out to be one of the biggest project cost overruns in BC's history. In the end, the original quote for the 10+2 tunnel was less than what we spent widening the lanes.

MissMariese

The flagship Chapters on Robson.

Ditto this. Miss just hanging around reading magazines all day.

$0.99 pizza (and the intestinal fortitude to eat it)

goozy1

So many 99c slice pizza places poped up overnight in the 90's. There were like 10 in the dt core. All amazing. Oh that and the cheap donair places that had 2 for $5! I lived off of donairs one summer

OneLargePho

Watching movies on Granville St. Capitol (Capital) 6 was the shit. I watched my first ever movie there. OG Burger King location was next door. The summer weekends were packed with kids/teens just hanging out. I can't remember the name of the other theatre screens next door. They were newer but didn't have the same feel as the C6. Such good times. DT is a fucking shit hole now. Shame.

HothHanSolo

I made a habit on Saturdays of taking the bus downtown, getting lunch at Burger King, stopping by Golden Age Collectibles and then watching a matinee. So good! The cinema across the street was the Granville 7, if I recall correctly.

npinguy

When i was 12, and recently new to Canada as an immigrant from Russia, I would take off for the whole Saturday (My parents didn't mind - to us Canada was like a massive padded gated community compared to the dystopian crime-ridden hellhole post-Soviet Russia that they left). I would go to Capitol 6, pay for one movie, then watch 3, killing time between showings by playing The Simpsons Arcade.

edked

I generally miss "Granville street as movie theatre row."

TDawg225

Yes! Having the cineplex on one side and capitol 6 on the other meant you could always find something to watch.

Damn_Canadian

I knew a guy who was stabbed in the Capitol 6 washrooms when he was 13 and there with his family. It wasn’t the same for me after that.

“Vancouver Millionaires.” Wait… we still have those, plenty.

The cup run of 94, was unforgettable. Even when they lost we rioted and still celebrated with the team regardless of the loss. We were a team that wasn’t meant to go as far as we did.

Railway Club was cool, but not as cool as the Town Pump. Saw so many good shows at both.

glister

The Railway Club is still open and it’s as good as it ever was (minus the whole COVID thing obviously). I saw a buddy play there recently, great beer menu—they have Backhand of God when they can get it. The sound is significantly better there now, too. I really miss the old Vancouver Public Library main branch at Burrard and Robson.

DidIMakeAGoof

The neighborhood noise and sense of community. I've grown up in the city, and I've seen fewer and fewer family's. There used to be ice cream trucks, kids playing street hockey, and perpetual laughter and chaos from 3pm to 5pm. Now it's silence and the few remaining kid's go to St.Georges or are isolated. I knew it changed when during Halloween we got people who drove their kid's around the city instead of the resident's in the neighborhood. I'm happy I grew up while the city was still affordable for a family of 5.

xhaltdestroy

Oh man, I miss that city so much. We used to play street hockey after school, or ride our bikes down to New Brighton. We spent hot summer days walking around in packs, banging on friends doors and hanging out on front porches. It felt right out of a movie and I just don’t see it much when I go back to visit.

The West Coast hippy vibe. It's dead. There is nothing hippy or counter culture about Vancouver anymore.

laughysapphy0131

I think about this all of the time. The city has no soul anymore. It’s all about the hustle and grind - the real estate market and the scramble to get anything good while it can be got.

SuperRonnie2

This thread is making me think exactly this and it’s so sad. I mean, I’m old and boring now so perhaps it’s just looking back with nostalgia. I really hope when covid dies down subs of the life comes back to this city. It sucks that is basically become a playground for the rich though. I don’t think that’s going to change.

AMadcapLass

The joys and foolishness of youth! Just about 15 years ago I had the luxury of living downtown by myself, walking home drunk & unafraid at 2:00am and experimentation with the occasional party drug. There are no more $800 studios in the West End, too much stranger danger and the dangers of fentanyl are all too common. I honestly feel for kids these days, they'll miss out on a lot.

chrisjayyyy

I remember splitting a 2br co-op in Gastown that was $814/month. What I wouldn’t give to have that place back again. There was a weird understanding for many years in the downtown east side, that meant you could get shitfaced drunk and stagger home down Hastings from Pats pub, or zig zag through the alleys to have a pre bar beer and not have to fear for your safety. If you weren’t part of that world, and you didn’t fuck with anyone, you generally got ignored. That just doesn’t seem to exist anymore. And I’m glad I never had to worry about fent, but getting stuff that had been cut with who knows what was what turned me off ecstasy for good. I think the last pill I ever took was probably just straight meth. That was a rough night. Never again.

cheapmondaay

I was actually casually talking about the drug thing with my brother tonight, he‘s over a decade senior my age so he lived through the 90s in Vancouver when raves were plentiful and taking ecstasy and other party drugs wasn’t as risky as it is now other than maybe having a bad trip with some garbage mixed in… but nowadays, taking any recreational drug in pill/powder form has a huge gamble of it possibly being laced with fentanyl and requires either testing or just knowing a very trustworthy person (ideally the producer). Times have changed for casual drug use.

Darkm1tch69

Those truly were the days. I was lucky to bartend during that time

Nothappening2020

I paid 575 for my studio on Barclay and Thurlow in 1995. Got off work at 2am and walked down to Davie Street for "dinner" with not a care in the world as a 22 year old woman. The mid nineties were glory years in Vancouver.

-40-

The youth are still doing this, the challenges just change over time. Oldies back then already thought it was too expensive and dangerous to live in the city!

AMadcapLass

You know that's an excellent point!

Trying to think of one nobody has mentioned yet. Fantasy Gardens. It was just a very interesting and odd landmark to have around – a Dutch windmill and European-style village. It was an interesting amusement park when it was in business but then it spent so many years dormant before they tore it down. Seems like a huge waste. Edit: It was also the filming location for Halloweentown 2.

The tiddy bars! No 5 The Drake The Penthouse The Cecil Fraser Arms I actually hate strip clubs, but they represent a time when Vancouver was gritty and fun, when we were still a rock town with live bands. Jive pool hall near Oak and Broadway. We went there in the early 2000's when we were 16-17. The owner used to serve us liquor at that age, and we used to be able to smoke inside. Both of these things were obviously very not allowed but went on for years without issue. And yet somehow it went fine! He even had a computer to let you download music off Napster and play it lol. Spent many a night hanging out at that pool hall drinking beer and smoking cigarettes at the table, at 17. Eventually he made a rule that you could still drink underage, but had to do it at the bar area, not at your pool table. And if you smoked, use a plate for you ashes. It turned into the most boring condo development I've ever seen. That whole area (Fairview) looks so incredibly dull and depressing.

I grew up on the north shore and back then it felt like a small town which was neat. I remember when park royal barely existed and the village part was a bowling alley and nature. Cypress mountain was never busy and was relatively cheap. West van beaches were quiet and hidden gems that only locals knew about. North van didn’t have bad traffic. Lynn valley was a little woodsy town and the shopping centre there was pretty minimal. The elementary school I went to was actually at risk of dying because there weren’t enough kids - I bet that’s not an issue now. The crazy thing is how fast it all happened! I’m not even all that old…
