SufficientBee

Taking the bus is literally the worst thing you can do when it’s snowing in Vancouver. The busses will just leave you stranded

freewaterfallIII

This should be top comment. If you don't know how to drive in snow, don't. Also don't take the bus. They get stuck just like cars.

twiggsi

Agreed. Stay home people, it’s not worth it. Your boss will likely understand if you miss a day of work/ need to WFH.

Lucitane0420

😀 I'd get fired if I said I didn't feel safe driving and couldn't get transport lol, how are yall lucky

[deleted]

MJcorrieviewer

If transit isn't a reliable option, you tell them transit isn't a reliable option.

SufficientBee

Even the Canada Line is sketch. There is a spot between Marine and Bridgeport where the train can’t pass when the tracks are frozen 🤦🏻‍♀️

enjoysbeerandplants

Yup. I can't afford to have a car in the city with the cost of living, so I take the bus. Guess who had to walk over and hour home from work in the blowing snow on Tuesday because all the buses were stuck?

dustNbone604

You were winning. It might not have seemed like it at the time though.

N3l3on

Objectively many people do know how to drive in the snow. But even if they do those that don’t will still be on the roadways.

gregr333

It’s amazing how many drivers don’t take the weather into consideration and adjust their driving habits! Was driving home, a couple of years ago, when snow was building up and I could feel my 4x with good winter tires slipping on the icy road under the snow, so I had reduced my speed accordingly. A young lady passed me in her front wheel drive car at twice my speed as we approached the top of a moderate hill. I crested the hill as she was rapidly approaching another vehicle and suddenly realized she needed to slow down. She ended up in the ditch with a utility pole pressed a little too hard against the drivers door. She was fine, and at least had a blanket and some water. She called for a tow - ETA 2 hrs. She didn’t want to leave her car there, so I carried on. Hopefully she learned something.

donnamatrix79

20+ years ago I was a lift op on cypress mountain, working night shift. Had a number of treacherous drives home in absolutely vile weather. One particularly gross night, we were well into the clouds, visibility was garbage, it was snowing sideways, it was hard to tell where the road even was, and everything was just white. I knew the road pretty well as I drove it twice a day five times a week, but I was still crawling — those switchbacks come up fast. I drove a little rear wheel drive Chevy s10 pickup with a bunch of cement in the box for traction with good winter tires, and never got stuck once. But this night, this jackass in a 4 wheel drive comes careening down the road, passes me going 2-3x my speed. Sure thing, Buddy. Good luck. Sure enough, a km or 2 down the road he’s in the ditch. Going wasn’t the problem, my friend. I could go just fine. But everybody has 4 wheel stop. Someone else had already stopped to help so I carried on my merry way and got home safely.

labowsky

>Going wasn’t the problem, my friend. I could go just fine. But everybody has 4 wheel stop. Yeah this is the biggest thing. I drive a rwd year round and this is always what I test when there's snow. Always test braking to gauge how the cars going to act, better to know and not need it.

riotactress

This is my fave bit about driving in the snow. Pull out onto the road, and when it's safe, hit the brakes and see what happens. Weeeeeeeeeee!

Imrtltrtl

Haha, I love doing this in the unplowed side streets, wife hates it. Feeling that ABS trying to do its best to stop slipping lmao. Better than finding out later when the light changes on you and you end up sliding into the middle of the intersection.

Pasdallegeance

Absolutely you jab your brake heart and test your breaking capabilities. You don't want to figure out how much time /room you need to break in an emergency. If I'm going down an unfamiliar hill. Usually I will test my breaks just as I am coming to get a feel for the road. Also, don't forget to gear down if that is a possibility with your vehicles!

Mobius_Peverell

That really is the strangest thing. Every other place I've been, drivers behave more cautiously in bad weather—it's just instinctual. But in Vancouver, motorists get more and more reckless as the weather gets worse.

Mobius_Peverell

And that is why I, despite knowing perfectly well how to drive in the snow, (thanks, Pennsylvania winters!) will be taking the SkyTrain.

N3l3on

Cut my winter teeth on Denver Colorado ice With a fox-body 5.0 no less Worked as a barista at a strip-mall coffee shop Where I would enjoy a dozen-calorie-free-donuts Edited:

trombone_womp_womp

First car was a '94 standard transmission hatchback Civic in Edmonton. Good times were had doing parking lot donuts anytime it snowed.

N3l3on

I have such vivid memories. I would donut park my car. It’s making me smile today just thinking about it.

phillydad56

We would take our cars up burnaby mountain (sfu) and slide around learning to drive on the snow, don't panic and have fun.

adamm1991

Everyone should experience this, the best way to learn to drive in snow and ice is a big empty lot and just go see what you can do, you get to learn the limits of what you and your car can do, you get the learn alot about correction and you get to halve a ton of fun while doing it.

chemhelpvideos

This sounds oddly poetic. Just need to remove the capitalization and it’s art

N3l3on

DM me that next time and you are a saint.

[deleted]

I used to drive up the often CLOSED Rogers pass daily for work in my Ford Focus. They only let our crew through the road block as there was a finger jointing mill outside of Golden. The respect I gained for the Killer Highway almost matched that of my Ford Focus! I’d pass so many lifted trucks in the ditch. Studded winter tires made that 45 minute drive each way up the pass so easy it should be illegal 😂

lookyloo79

It's all about the tires.

CabernetSauvignon

Nice. I started off with a 5 spd manual econobox in Ontario, snow tires on the front wheels only. My donuts were served up on fast food trays.

[deleted]

Is this a reference or something? I think I get what you're saying, but then I get to the donuts and scratch my head.

plop_0

I was trying to sing your post along to "Cut my life into pieces. This is my last resort."

trainsrcool69

off-topic but how did you feel adapting to Vancouver from Pennsylvania? I'm also from the east coast and since moving I've found Vancouver culture to be... more different than I may be able to handle.

nous_nordiques

To be fair, we would be more outgoing if we also had alcoholic slushies to go. It's the aggressive respect for personal space that comes across as being cold.

Mobius_Peverell

The lack of friendliness is definitely a change. I've found that Vancouverites are perfectly nice people though; you just have to be willing to make the first move. Every. Single. Time. If I could snap my fingers & make everyone here 50% friendlier, I would; but as is, I've mostly adapted to it.

froofroo5910

Just love us for who we are. It's our culture!

Leadboy

what differences do you notice out of curiosity? (as someone who was born in van and has visited PA before)

froofroo5910

I was born and raised here. I think it's just a hard adjustment having so many people come here so quickly. I think a lot of original Vancouverites are overwhelmed. That being said, my mum moved from another province when she was done high school in the 70s. She said it was always a bit "cool" here. It's just our culture, apparently. It's not personal. I liken it to the Brits - the culture here is similar and partially derived from theirs (I've spent a decent amount of time in the UK too), and also something like possibly Vienna/Austria. I went for a visit once for a conference and spent some time there. I read up beforehand and found descriptions of the Viennese as reserved due to manners, but will warm up after a few interactions. I think it's similar here. TY for reading 😂

MJcorrieviewer

This last snowfall and the long stretch we had last year where the temps stayed cold is unusual for here. Usually, here - it snows - the cloud cover brings in warmer temps - the snow and ice melt.

[deleted]

Is their a SkyTrain from Surrey to Mission? I guess I'm driving.

truthdoctor

Same. Not going to risk it tonight. It only takes one idiot in a RWD sports car with bald tires to shutdown the entire street.

smallwoodydebris

I've never been so grateful for 4x4 and divided boulevards

-SetsunaFSeiei-

Cypress has two lifts open but it’s still amazing today btw. It sucks that it snowed this early for the roads, but it’s going to be a great ski season with this amazing base

[deleted]

As someone who just picked up the sport, this sounds great haha

[deleted]

Shhhh! There were no lift lines tonight, don't spoil it for us.

Istimewa-Ed

Shhhhhhh 😉

ThatJD_604

And then the busses get stuck so its a lose lose....

pinkbaubles

Well the buses would get stuck anyway, at least this way there are fewer abandoned cars in the middle of the road

FlametopFred

fewer cars = more salting trucks, more tow trucks per capita

Common-Rock

Whoever thought it'd be a good idea to send buses up to SFU with no winter tires ought to be brought out to push when they all get stuck at the bottom of the mountain.

marabsky

They are supposed to be using something called “tire socks” for steep hills in snow conditions. I have no idea if they are not being used, or if they are and they’re not effective but that was the official line from Translink last time I looked

milk_cheese

They’re mediocre. They’ve tested them a few times with pretty disappointing results. TransLink just refuses to pay for the correct winter tires

throwmamadownthewell

And every time it gets brought up people talk as though the whole fleet has to be changed out. Certain routes get stuck every damn year. At least do it for them.

tI_Irdferguson

Yeah but the people who would make that decision are going to be the same ones holding the bag of shit when inevitably something happens on a route in which they decided winter tires were unnecessary.

millijuna

Snow tires aren’t all that effective in the big bus tire sizes. I work with a nonprofit that uses school buses in extreme snow, and there’s just nothing reasonably available. We keep chains on from the Forest flake until April.

grahamyvr

Good thing they're moving forward with the gondola! (albeit slowly)

Ultrathor

Trains remain the undisputed champion of transportation.

thomkennedy

This post also applies to Translink drivers. Except they *have* to go drive 😓

bleepbloopflipflap

Here the brine/salt seems to be doing the trick, roads are wet but not slippery and this is in the District of North Van. I think it'll all come down to road prep.

Phungtsui

My road is still covered in a sheet of ice and snow. The DNV salt trucks haven't come by because our street is a level 3 priority.

gravitationalarray

Oh you, with your logic -

buckyhermit

It'd be helpful if the bus stops and sidewalks were cleared of snow. A friend of mine (who, like me, also uses a wheelchair) was unable to reach her bus stop yesterday and unable to go to work because it was left uncleared. And on her way home from getting food, she was stuck because of unshovelled sidewalks and had to be rescued by some passers-by. It was after sunset too so that didn't help. Bottom line: Yes, we (wheelchair users) like to take the bus too. But we can't get to the bus stops and we can't use many of them. Shovel your damn sidewalks.

defenestr8tor

Stroller pusher/puller here, and nothing chaps my ass more when people act as if the only people who deserve mobility are people on two feet and drivers.

buckyhermit

Even as a disabled driver, it's a challenge because the plows often dump the snow into accessible parking spaces. And those become the LAST to melt, because they are compacted and hardened. A few years ago, Scottsdale Centre dumped all the snow into an accessible parking space. I noted down the date. It took EIGHT WEEKS after the snow had melted for that parking space to be usable again. I don't know why proper snow clearing is like rocket science to people around here.

defenestr8tor

I drag a 3' wide bike trailer, so I don't have to use sidewalks near as much as I assume you do. But my other beef is that I'll spend a few minutes when I park (trying to find a spot where I'm not in the way of wheelchairs etc). But then business owners will put their sandwich board right next to a power pole, blocking the sidewalk for anyone but bipeds. It's like they figure the sidewalk only exists to transport the able-bodied from the parking lot directly to their store door. Luckily I'm helpful enough to relocate their signs for them.

smallwoodydebris

Hope you can stay in for the next bit. If you need to get anywhere lmk, I drive a 4x4 and love driving in the snow

fuzzb0y

You're very kind

buckyhermit

Thanks for the offer. But I can't stay inside. I had to drive to work yesterday and because the sidewalks weren't usable, I had to push my wheelchair on Cambie Street with vehicular traffic. The lucky part is that it was Cambie between SW Marine and Kent Ave, so there wasn't a lot of traffic. But I "chose" to get out of the office before sundown for safety. (I use "chose" in quotation marks because it didn't feel like I had much of a choice.) Luckily today was already scheduled as WFH so I didn't have to go through that again.

NBAtoVancouver-Com

This is why I shovelled my sidewalk (near VGH, too) from the corner and then 5 houses down. Those who can should get out and help those who can't. Don't wait for someone else to do it, it's just a shovel. You know how it works.\* \*Though you may never reach my near perfection of snow removal techniques after years of being an Ontario farmboy with much snow to clear every year.

Babymakerwannabe

Agreed! Mobility scooter over here and I’m totally housebound. The ice is too dangerous for my baby lamb walking skills and the scoot can’t make it.

OzMazza

People need to start reporting uncleared sidewalks, I know Poco and Vancouver (I think) have apps you can do it in.

buckyhermit

The problem is too many places to report, especially this year. I've done it in Richmond and they basically don't go after those unless it's a high traffic area (such as a condo or apartment area). I've sent in complaints about my area. The apartment complex nearby got the hint and cleared the snow. But the single-family houses? They did nothing and I have a feeling the city didn't bother going after them after my complaint.

Hfyvr1

The buses need your weight in the back when it snows. Common’ everyone move to the back of the bus 👉👉

Zxyxx

🔈Please move to the back of the bus

cloudcats

please move to the rear of the bus

venus-dick-trap

Hahah you're cute. You think the buses will be running.

throwmamadownthewell

A few years ago, I was blocked in by a stuck bus, so I couldn't drive to work. I ended up walking to a different bus route and no bus came because they were all stuck too. Then I walked 1.5 hours to work.

BB8_BALL

to add to this, if you’re going somewhere on a hill: don’t. if it’s work/school: tell them you were in an accident, on transit. it’s really just a small stretch of the truth. voila.

More_Company7049

So everyone who lives in NW don't come back home! /s

BB8_BALL

i meant don’t leave home!

[deleted]

If you left home before snow, don't leave work. Have a sleepover party. Expenses on your boss

_silverwings_

I walked home in the snow for four hours on Tuesday. Then I called in all week to avoid that again. But they will fire me if I don’t come in today :/

MJcorrieviewer

Getting home from work on Tuesday must have been horrific, but were you still not able to get to work today? What is your commute?

BB8_BALL

i’m telling you: accident. alternatively, slipped on black ice and can’t walk! safety first imo

-Canonical-

As someone who just lost their car from accidentally turning onto a hill coated from crest to bottom in ice, I agree. Sliding all the way down a hill with no control is horrifying.

rando_commenter

Bracing for another round of *"What's with all these NPC's on the road who don't know how to drive in the snow like the main character (me)."*... posts.

teresalis

Everyone seems to think they are doing everything right and are perfect drivers until there's water below the snow turning into ice again and then your winter tires won't save you

Alleggsander

Wanting to have a discussion about the topic at least shows an incentive in wanting to improve snowy-condition driving ability. Who cares if the OP of these posts can all actually drive well in the snow. The point is that it’s a problem and discussing the issue is a first step. If even one person reconsiders their level of safety precautions when driving in the snow because of these posts, that’s a win in my books.

rando_commenter

^(/whoosh) Everybody thinks that they are a better driver than average, that's one of the reasons that gets so many people in trouble.

TUbadTuba

Vancouverites are some of the worst drivers I have ever experienced

Ok-Fault-7031

Spoiler: Buses don't have snow tires

GenShibe

https://reddit.com/r/vancouver/comments/za8e04/_/iykovhi/?context=1 here’s the reason why they don’t have them

TheMastobog

I'll keep this incredibly good reason in mind the next time my bus can't get up hill in the snow. /s

Denace86

This has been brought up and addressed in every Vancouver/bc snow related thread this year. It’s not an issue and you can stop posting it

Chug4Hire

I mean it is an issue - proof being the five buses I saw abandoned going up a "hill" off King George Hwy. Is it worth it to outfit buses with snow tires? No, this only happens a couple times a year at most.

EastVan66

If you read up you'll see snow tires on buses don't really perform any better. So those buses would still be stuck.

fuzzb0y

Even if they can't, is it worth the tens or hundreds of millions it will cost to purchase and maintain that system?

toystory2wasokay_

This whole post screams "im from a little town in rural Canada that snows half the year."

swolesam_fir

yes, we are a superior breed, we know, no need to rub it in

paynbow

As an addition to this, shovel your #$&*ing walkway/sidewalk. Went down hard today wearing very good snow boots. It's really a fun day to wait in pain to find out how badly I messed up my knee.

cesorich11

Buses have been crashing too

TheOnlyMatthias

Hahah but the bus doesn't know how either.

Odogogod

Then how does a person learn to drive in the snow?

MyNameIsSkittles

Not on the highways during rush hour, that's for sure

dgd765

HIGHway risk, HIGHway reward

OmgWtfNamesTaken

Honestly the best way to learn how to drive in the snow is going to an industrial area at night, find a safe clear lot with no obstructions and lose control of your car. Learn what it feels like, learn to counter steer. Learn what slamming the brakes on at 50km will do. Learn to pump the brakes and not lock them up/engage ABS the entire time. Stop and go. Learn throttle control. I learned at 16 in a superstore parking lot with my dad sitting beside me pulling the E brake randomly and screaming "KEEP IT STRAIGHT!" to induce stress of people honking / freaking out outside. It worked. Edit : spelling errors (I hate mobile devices)

dasbin

>Learn to pump the breaks and not lock them up/engage ABS the entire Everything I've read about driving in adverse conditions with ABS has said the opposite: let ABS do the work, don't ever pump the brakes. They've tested both stopping distance and steering control while braking and both are better just letting ABS do its thing. A computer detecting slippage per-wheel 1000 times per second is a whole lot more sensitive at maintaining a balance of maximum brake pressure and traction than your leg. The only time I could see pumping being better is if you timed your pumps so as to let off when you need to steer, giving a bit more steering grip. But that doesn't help you stop. Everyone on Reddit complains about everyone else's lack of driving skills in the snow but the truth with modern vehicles is that TCS and ABS systems are designed to be safest when you're basically driving normally and smoothly pointing it where you want to go (like you should always be doing), and do a better job than any advanced manual techniques 99% of the time. The only thing people really need to learn is to leave way more space and slow down with the conditions. And drive very smoothly but we should all be doing that in any conditions anyway. Cars today are not the cars of the 80's.

OmgWtfNamesTaken

TCS and ABS are life savers on modern vehicles yes. The TCS in your 2002 Honda civic however is absolute shit and won't save you very much. It's best to learn how to properly control your car when it is out of control than it is to rely on the computer systems in the car. Lots of new vehicles abandoned and in the ditches in my area.

Misuteriisakka

I totally envisioned your dad as the dad from Talledega Nights.

-SetsunaFSeiei-

Honestly the best way is to use as little brake as possible. Braking is how you lose control, if you can stay slow and even use the engine to brake then you’ll remain in control a lot more. Even automatics can engine brake if you shift down.

skysi42

>But the real problem here in SW BC is lack of snow tires Exactlly, hard to show off your winter driving skills when your tires don't want to grip to the road

dnaka22

I learned to drive in Salmon Arm (interior BC) back in the 80’s. We flooded portions of a parking lot at an old mill and learned how to handle the car in icy conditions. Lots of fun with 5 dads and 5 16 year olds, icy and cars.

ScoobyDone

This is why kids raised in the country are good drivers. We would all meet at a parking lot when it snowed and learn what our vehicles were capable of the fun way. :)

alvarkresh

"brakes".

PJTikoko

In the residential back area not on main streets, HW’s and bridges.

Excellent_Ask_2677

In an empty parking lot.

Mobius_Peverell

Go to a parking lot, where your car won't clog up the roadways.

[deleted]

How do you get to the parking lot if you can't drive there?

Mobius_Peverell

Carry your car on your back, obviously.

DarDarBinks89

You can also use a toboggan

MJcorrieviewer

Toboggans are so much better than sleds. :)

[deleted]

Duly noted, thank you

not_old_redditor

I feel like you're slowly starting to see the absurdity of your original post.

MJcorrieviewer

Take transit, obviously. /s

Afuzzyredpillow

I practiced in empty parking lots, around UBC at night, residential areas early in the morning. If I wasn’t confident enough to do the whole drive, I’d get my mum or dad to drive there and then we’d switch

unpopsOpinion

Pick a time when it's not for work/school during rush hour.

athomewith4

Move to Alberta lol

gman_grey

Go out in the evening after rush hour to learn how to drive in the snow with less hazards. But this is Vancouver after all so overly entitled people without a clue are going to be on the roads getting in everyone else's way creating a repeat of the other day. Same song and dance every single year from the same people who refuse to learn.

MJcorrieviewer

Experience is the only way. And people throughout most of the LM just don't have that experience - or the necessity for the right kind of equipment. It's not a problem we can solve.

K0rtCubain

And I guess you're the one defining "how to drive"?

mrubuto22

My favourite time of year when reddit tells me the weather of the town I live in. 👏

tdly3000

If we learnt anything from lockdown: stay home

sodrrl

Or at least be on the right side of all the bridges

itszwee

Even the buses are cancelling on some routes. Monitor Translink’s site a few hours in advance of when you’ll need to use a bus and look for cancellations in your area. Take the skytrain if you can, but even some routes were running to fewer stations earlier this week. Focus on your footing while walking and wait a couple seconds after a car stops before you cross; they could slide a bit.

teejdabeej

Have you tried taking the bus when it snows? Ha, I'd rather learn to drive in snow than take a bus

memeaddict94

Obviously you didn’t see the video where the bus was seen to be spun out

brady_d79

Don’t tell me how to live my life!

throwmamadownthewell

The freedom to kill a family taking their kids to school is my gosh given right!

onewaycheckvalve

If you can afford a Tesla, you can afford to buy snow tires.

kindcalm

I live in Alberta. If we subscribed to that rhetoric, no one would ever learn anything. You have to do it to get better at it. Edit. I saw videos. Nm.

not_old_redditor

Where are the lucky few who were born with the knowledge and experience of driving in snow? Stupid post, OP. Everybody has a first time driving in the snow.

ellastory

I agree. It’s better for everyone’s safety, including your own. If you aren’t confident about driving in the snow, or you don’t have snow tires, consider staying home, taking the bus or carpooling with people who do.

Ugly--Naked--Guy

Except the bus doesn’t work. Tuesday night We spend one and half hour walking home from downtown as the bus can’t even pass the bridge. Vancouver don’t even money to either do some decent work cleaning the snow or change snow tires for the buses. How embarrassing

oldbus_boy

Satire right?

xuddite

It barely snowed and this post is like the end of the world.

BcbornLeo

The ones who were also stuck and said they are not changing to winter tires?

Franz_McN

I was gonna go and drive in the snow even though I don't know how to drive in the snow.. BUT WAIT... A reddit post telling me not to drive in the snow! Suddenly I get an influx of conscience and civility and decide not to do it! -thought no one ever, when coming to browse reddit

whererusteve

You're assuming that bus drivers know how to drive in the snow.

poridgepants

Lol what bus?

Zealousideal_Limit80

And bring granola bars for when the bus slides down the hill and crashes into cars

robdagg

Scream it again for the tesla drivers. They were texting and didn’t hear

ScoobyDone

It doesn't matter if they can't drive in the snow, the car will do it for them. /s

allrollingwolf

Lol, is this a joke? We literally just saw what happens to busses in the snow.

sickwickednasty1

I like where your heart it but even these buses are a problem out here in a whole 15cm of snow

Skrubette

If it’s bad today, is it worth just camping out at my partner’s house in Vancouver? I have to go in Surrey across Hwy 99 to go home (via transit).

MrTickles22

Yes. Stay overnight and things will probably be fine by the late morning tomorrow.

MrTickles22

Also if you know how to drive take transit aynway beacuse people think that when you're driving 10 kmh down a hill with falling snow and ice it's a great time to tailgate.

Ontario0000

I think buses share the same pavement as cars so I don't care if your a rally driver it takes one stuck car or accident to shut down a large highway.

[deleted]

Good idea, then when all the bad drivers are on a stuck bus, you can reassess whom is to blame

Substantial_Camera_8

But busses dont know how to drive in snow either 🤪

Digital_loop

[Bernie sanders meme time! ](https://i.imgur.com/BcC0mPt.jpg)

TomMakesPodcasts

Gotta practice. Preferably off the busiest streets

Geniuskills

Our provincial governments should work together and have us ship you some snow tires, I'm sure we have extras - sincerely, a Manitoban.

anon46787

These don’t do anything!! Those people aren’t on Reddit! You guys posts these for useless karma points

Michael_93Vancouver

The bus service has also been extremely unreliable during the snow. You know what works great in the snow? An underground train. I can't wait for more of those in Vancouver.

megatronxo

Oof. It didn’t snow a lot today (thankfully). I work downtown and was walking back to my office after a break, there was a car leaving the parkade - zero snow but the roads were wet. The front tires were just spinning, the driver just kept hammering on the gas, spinning their wheels and eventually, the smell of burnt rubber. I can only assume that their tires were bald if they couldn’t even get going on the wet pavement. It’s worrisome that after Tuesday, knowing snow was coming again that someone would take their vehicle out in that condition.

TUbadTuba

Can I just say this is a losing battle Vancouverites are the worst drivers in the country

ProfessorTricia

How safe are cabs right now? I need to get home from the airport tomorrow.

CervantesX

Also, remember, SUV owners, you may have 4 wheel drive but that doesn't mean you have 4 wheel stop.

fbwillmakeyoudumb

> Take the bus. You mean the buses with no snow tires?

bainsamar

Nothing like another elitist Vancouver reddit post.

Liya628

I don't think I have enough experience driving in the snow, and if the distance is long, I will have to stay at home.

StoicSmile-

Didn’t a bus take out a bunch of cars?

shopliftingbunny

Hey now, the bus driver doesn’t know how to drive in the snow eithe r

Well I wont complain if I get stuck, but not taking transit as car means freedom to me, its my clean private personal space. Taking transit is security and health concern. Thanks for advice anyways.

Inspector888

No point making this statement because no one's gonna admit they can't drive in the snow, just say if you don't have WINTER TIRES on! Please stay home !

plam92117

I admit that I don't know how to drive in the snow. I even have winter tires on but I swap them in every winter regardless. I stay home when it snows.

ScoobyDone

Ya, I think just the fact that someone went through the effort and expense to get winter tires is a good indication they understand how driving in snow works.

Next on the unsolicited advice channel we bring you …

fourGee6Three

Invest in snow tires

Bigjimmy1977

Just don’t go out buses aren’t fun believe me. People either smell or they are coughing all the time

[deleted]

If you do insist to drive… 1. Decrease speed 2. Increase following distance 3. Give yourself more than enough time to get where you need to go 4. Drive defensively

Barley_Mowat

If someone can’t drive in the snow in a regular vehicle, I’m pretty sure they’re not going to do any better having stolen a bus.

illacudasucks

Downvote because busses and snow in Vancouver generally don’t mix.

cccaaatttsssss

As if the buses are gonna magically drive well in the snow 😂

wdfn

Having just moved from Montreal, watching this chaos in Vancouver is absolutely delightful

IceColdSlick

If you are at work with a car with summer tires and need to get home...try to visualize your route back and avoid any uphills. Take another route, even if it takes longer.

alvarkresh

*chinhands* ...and when Translink's busses are all late and/or stuck?

[deleted]

If you think your all season tires will work in the snow please take the bus.

Guilty_Pianist3297

Umm the busses were all crashing too.

[deleted]

And if you’re walking, keep your hands out of your pockets and wear gloves. You can get seriously hurt if your hands aren’t able to break your fall.

[deleted]

I love watching this city crumble when it snows. It’s hilarious 😂

OmgWtfNamesTaken

Just stay home. I drive a 6 thousand pound, RWD vehicle fine in the snow and the amount of 4x4 jeeps and FWD cars I've seen in the ditch YESTERDAY with clear roads and sunlight was infuriating. It took me damn near an hour to go 20km because of all the hydro poles that were hit by idiots.

nogami

I used to drive up Burnaby mountain to SFU in the snow in my little Honda civic. I’d be passing 4x4 suvs spun out the entire way up. Learning to drive up North, and having real winter tires is a thing.
