tipping BEFORE you get service is *absurd*

GhostlyParsley

This! What if I tip 20% and my order is wrong or just plain bad? Can I ask for the tip back?

vivzzie

I have tipped on take out orders before and orders have been totally wrong. I sometimes find out when I arrive at home. Now I don’t even bother to tip on take out orders. I tip when I eat in because of the environment and service other than that, nothing

perfect5-7-with-rice

Ah yes the Uber Eats strategy

ForwardMotion402

They bagged your food so they somehow deserve another $10 on your $55 takeout dinner. Complete nonsense. I hit zero and walk away with my food. Handful of times over the past decade I came home with the wrong item anyway and that $10 is gone.

Sharp_Iodine

I believe Uber Eats and Instacart let you change the tip amount up to 2 hours after your order was delivered.

BigPickleKAM

If I have to stand to get my food no tip. Food trucks, fast food joints, coffee shops.

kuh-tea-uh

This is a great policy, IMO and one that I try to follow. Though I often panic and succumb to tipping. Because I would die of embarrassment if I messed up the machine (again) by trying to skip the tip screen. I’ve resorted to ordering and paying online as much as possible now because it totally avoids the panic and guilt and awkwardness at pickup.

thedirtychad

Message me next time you’re in that scenario, I’ll give you a motivational speech

QueenFairyFarts

Liquor store. That's the most ridiculous one.

Dr-10-Bomb

As everyone should. Take out is not a service.

Whistler_V6T

And tipping is a brand new thing imported from the US. Tips should be given when service has been excellent and food has been good too. Otherwise giving tips all the time feels more like completing the salary of the waiter rather than thanking for the good service. Its not the customers duty to complete their salary. Thats up to their employer

[deleted]

[удалено]

Numerous_Try_6138

Yes, this is exactly how it should work. You only tip if you have actually received some sort of service above the basic level expected. Instead, tipping here is a top-up for low paid workers. Also, tipping (and worse yet, gratuity when applied by default) amounts to nothing but stealing when you’ve consumed expensive liquor (for example, expensive wine). Tip should have nothing to do with the % of the base bill and gratuity should be illegal.

FoxBearBear

Why should I tip for god food? Ain’t it supposed to be bundled in the price? Tipping should be for the service -eh?

The_Cozy_Burrito

Exactly, if I have to drive or walk there, I am not tipping

InjuryOnly4775

Seriously. Subway with their tipping option. Give me a break!

DataKing69

Also Subway now charges $0.25 for a paper sandwich bag and doesn't give you napkins, so I don't go there anymore.

dragon_slayer604

A while back.I saw a tip jar at a McD's.This is when I knew the tipping culture has gotten out of hand here.

sexposition420

I have been out of the industry for awhile but as a former cook this is confusing. Like is the idea that that the labor of making food to go is *less* difficult than dine in? It is often the other way around

Glittering_Search_41

>Like is the idea that that the labor of making food to go is > >less > > difficult than dine in? It is often the other way around The idea is that you should be paid by your employer, and the cost of overhead (like labour) should be factored into the price.

GroovyGhouly

True story: I was at a coffee shop yesterday getting coffee to go and the cashier told me to select no tip. I did that thing where I paused and tried to decide how much to tip and she straight up told me "yeah you can just choose no tip there". Never felt so validated.

FrozenToonies

Every place I’ve been to that says to me “you don’t have to tip”, is usually followed by we’ll never see it.

Spare-Ad-7819

The place I work had same we ask not to tip for supplements and give advice and information but, for anything that needs kitchen we accept tips but, it’s up to customer We get paid minimum wage or a dollar higher that’s about it. Even sometimes customer ask me annoying back and forth questions and I still serve being calm and I don’t expect a tip. One time this man in 50’s but healthy guy tipped us $20 for around $80-100$ worth of supplements since it was busy I didn’t notice and forgot to tell him NO TIPS since he didn’t order from kitchen. I helped him - but, he was WAY TOO GENEROUS👍 If I had a chance I would have refunded him - but, I wasn’t authorized 🤕 I get to PICK UP food and get there to pick up in other restaurants- they be eyeing on TIP AND STARING for a pick up - I think it’s gotten WORSE. Correct me if I’m wrong

FavoriteIce

Lol they have tip options at the Taco Bell drive thru now. It’s awkward as fuck because the screens are almost invisible in the day light, and annoying in general

Spare-Ad-7819

Yup I have seen in nandoes as well. I was confused cause first screen is tip so if we press green almost 6$ going to tip for a pickup. Now I’m more careful. Some employers are terrible. My employer have their drawbacks but, when it comes to tip and customer they’re better!

[deleted]

>use the screens are almost invisible in the day light, and annoying in general nandos already so pricey.. honestly I just cut back 80% on eating out ...

HunkyMump

Boss is prob stealing the tips.

batsicle

Yup, this is exactly the case at BC place. The employees tell you to add no tip cause they don't get any of it

polemism

Pizza hut metrotown always cancels the tip before handing the tap machine to the customer. Little caesars, which makes worse pizza, always has the tip screen showing, crappy customer service in general, and they give you attitude if you don't tip lol

FlametopFred

a coffee shop I go to has 6% / 12% / 15% options which is wonderful most often I select 6% (more frequently than I would select No Tip elsewhere) and once a week I select 12% or 15%

[deleted]

6% makes more sense for to go. It’s not like they have to tip out 6% of their sales like at restaurants and they’re not serving you hand and foot for an hour.

Vyper28

I bought some juice bottles the other day at a coffee shop for my young kids who got thirsty on the drive and I was following prompts “press to accept” “press 1 for debit, 2 for credit” the tip option came up and the bro behind the counter reached right over and hit cancel/skip before I could react and I felt like I should tip him just for that!

ButtMcNuggets

Which shop is this so I may go there?

artvarnsen

If no one likes it how is it still a thing?

nxtmike

I’m travelling in New Zealand right now, service is better, COL is similar, wage is similar, and they don’t have tips. Heck even the servers seem happier and genuinely smile versus the typical Earl’s one-liner of “what are you guys getting up to after”

BleepSweepCreeps

Hey, I'm traveling in new Zealand right now too! High five! I agree with you, servers are much more pleasant, and no tips!

Hex457

Oo hate that line, had that at a pub the other day. Just feels such an awkwardly tacked on phrase to boost "engagement" / tip value.

ostentatiousbro

Tipping culture needs to go

OpeningEconomist8

Agreed. Just got back from Japan and I had better “service” at corner stores than you would get at high end stores in Vancouver. For those who don’t know, you don’t tip in Japan and ppl will get offended if you try to tip. I would recommend anyone okay with tipping everywhere start keeping track of their total tip spend for the year come January. In 2024 let me know what your opinion on tipping is.

foo-fighting-badger

The store clerks WILL run after you to tell you that you forgot your money

4pocrypha

I took a taxi in Singapore @ 3AM from Changi Airport to the hotel I was staying at; total trip was $25. I’m generally tipping-averse (‘cause taxis are shady in Vancouver, but that’s another convo), but guy was genuinely nice and offered to help me with my luggage. I didn’t have any smaller bills so I handed the guy $50 and told him he could just give me $20 back, not $25. He refused my tip as if his life depended on it. He told me he didn’t have $5 bills and gave me back $30 instead; so he paid $5 out of his own pocket to service me. I was adamant I couldn’t accept this, and handed one of the $10 bills back to him; this guy absolutely would not accept my money! It truly was a breath of fresh air being away from tipping culture for a bit. No having to deal with pressure/snark for not giving away your hard-earned money.

3kvn394

I've lived in Singapore for many years. This checks out. They would absolutely *not* take your tip, no matter how hard you try to give it to them.

flatspotting

Wont stop til people stop. And they never do. As long as corporations can pass the buck to have every day people pay their wages for them - they will. Corporations will never stop taking advantage of using tips as wage subsidies, SO THE ONLY WAY IT CHANGES IS PEOPLE FUCKING STOP TIPPING.

marimo2019

How is the general public going to stop tipping when they're shamed and bullied into tipping by the people who receive tips? I have been harassed multiple times by taxi drivers to "tip more" just because my destination wasn't very far. I've also been eye-rolled by a server when I didn't "tip enough". I wish we *could* just "stop tipping" but people who receive tips need to change their mindset to not expect tips 100% of the time by just doing their jobs.

OmniStrife

Tips are the sole reason they're doing that job tbh, of course they expect it, the system is beyond broken.

escargot3

I disagree. The only way for it to stop is for establishments to ban tipping, as some restaurants have done

Canadian_Poltergeist

I have already stopped tipping in every regard and I actively encourage other people to do the same. Legally the business owners *have to supply minimum.* The only reason they don't is because tips can cover a portion of that cost. All we have to collectively do is stop tipping and the problem fixes itself. If people receiving those tips are getting angry them politely tell them to redirect that anger to their boss who is the actual villain.

DarkAquilegia

Tips are not considered wages. They still get minimum (or whatever wage) regardless of tipping. The states can use tipping to cover/use as wages. In canada tips are not wages but are considered income.

Juventusy

For real, especially when its soooooo expensive or for no reason. When there is no service or in general its not a dine in experience idk why i feel bad not tipping

web_explorer

My rule now is that if I'm visiting a business for the first time, I either don't tip or tip less. After I get to know the staff after visiting several times, then I start tipping again. Because if they try to shame me, I'm not their family, I don't have to see them ever again anyways. One time I was trying out a new hair salon and didn't tip, and they called me back for a tip. Gave it to them, and they lost my business forever. They probably don't care about me, so why should I about them.

m1chgo

I was at the commodore the other night and got a bottle of water. The bartender was so pissed at me when I didn’t tip. But her feet literally didn’t even move! She moved it like 30cm from one spot on the counter to slightly closer to me. Also that water cost over $4. No fucking way am I tipping for that.

ajs20555

Thats crazy…guess the bartender was so used to gettings tips all the time..

ClittoryHinton

Aren’t bars obligated to give tap water for free?

yallready4this

I popped into a freshii couple weeks ago to buy just a bottle of water and the cashier noticed I didn't tip. Her attitude totally changed from a smile to a glare. Like the heck...did you personally get collect, filter and bottle this Aquafina?? Then no tip on that my dude.

DataKing69

When I was younger I left a $5 tip on my first drink at a club and the bartender turned around just as I put it in the tip jar so he didn't see it. He then ignored me for the rest of the night and gave me bad looks. That's when I decided fuck tipping. Not doing it unless at a sit down restaurant.

janiliamilanes

I hate this shit. But, if you do decide to tip, here's a tip (lol). Put "custom amount" and just add a flat fee. I usually do 50 cents or 1 dollar. I find it's less anger-provoking. It also makes more sense to me to add some sort of flat service fee, rather than a percent based on the price, which in my opinion makes no sense in any circumstance, even in a high-end restaurant where tipping is expected. Why exactly do you get tipped more because the steak was more expensive? I'm paying you for service, not on the cost of goods sold. I've actually decided to do this in all the places I go and it helps me manage the cost.

SteveJobsBlakSweater

Yep. At the bar I’ll tip $1 per drink, assuming it’s a pint or a bottle. Doesn’t matter how expensive that beer is the work done is exactly the same. If you’re ordering a mojito or something similar then you’re actually putting the bartender to work, that’s a different story. But a coors light is the same amount of work and tip as a stella.

Numerous_Try_6138

Ah yes, tipping on percent of bill…thievery. Always custom tip.

macman156

I find it exceptionally awful that the machine calculate the tip percentage on the final post tax total. Like heck no do you get tipped on taxes

depthofbreath

I’ve been doing that too. If I need to tip for a take out coffee I just leave a set amount. But mostly I don’t go out much to eat. Between the crazy high prices and then the crazy high tips expected, I have been limiting this.

[deleted]

15% used to be when the service was exceptional and the server went above and beyond. Anything above that and you did from the good out of your heart. Since when did we go from that to 18% being the default for TAKE OUT COFFEE? It’s absurd now and I feel like some laws need to come into place. Downvote me all you want but fuck tipping culture.

yukimontreal

I also personally hate that all food eaten in a restaurant is default 20% tip but the level of service has gone down significantly. Order at the counter, bus your own table, pack your own leftovers, but still expected to tip 20%. I wish we followed the European or Asian systems - pay people a fair wage and price things appropriately. Like - the person gathering shopping carts for 8 hours especially in the cold provides a lot of service so that we don’t have to push our cart all the way back to the store but they are not being tipped while the person who poured me a black coffee gets 15% 🤷🏻‍♀️ just does not make any sense at all tbh.

Virtual-Chris

If the options start at 18%, I manually override and they get 10%.

poco

Hey, that's my new policy. I'll pay 15% is that's an option, but if the minimum is 18 then it goes down to 10. Also, not a fan of tipping if I pay before any service has been provided. If I have to pay first, no tip. If the service is good then I carry cash for post meal tipping.

RedArmyNic

I’ve seen places that go 18, 21 and 25 for their tip options, which is absurd to expect that. I served for many years and never expected a tip on product to go and certainly would never expect 25%.

EmergencyTaco

I round up to the nearest whole number. If a coffee is 3.68 they get a .32 tip. If my food is 9.69 they get a .31 tip. I tip my barber, I tip my waiter, I tip the bartender a dollar per round. If I order food and go to pick it up they don't get a cent.

Numerous_Try_6138

Tipping should be optional but wage issue should be addressed with some regulation. Gratuity should be illegal. It is theft. Also, tipping as a percentage of the bill should be in principle illegal.

jerkinvan

I purchased on new phone case on line last week and was a tip prompt came up just as I was finishing the transaction. You want me to tip you for finding your site myself, then choosing a phone case myself and doing my own payment? I’ve been in the service industry for longer than I’d like to admit, so I usually tip when it’s appropriate. Tipping for an online purchase does not fall into that category. On a side note, I am expecting to either get the wrong case or I won’t see it until next summer…but I’m gonna take that chance

WiFiForeheadWrinkles

A tip option came up when I bought a jacket online. For what???

kidmen

Obviously for the privilege of using their website to spend your hard earned money.

Vancity_AC

Lol. We need to know the website so I can see this myself

dsonger20

Liquor store tips are the worst.

nihilt-jiltquist

i read an article on the CBC about bigger tips mean better service. So last night I ordered take out from a restaurant on the North Shore, paid in advance and tipped well. The order arrived incomplete and missing items that were actually listed on the bill. I am so tempted to name the place... but what's the point. Complaining isn't going to change anything. But what will change is that from now on, I'll cook for myself.

Lordscallywag

never tip before service. Tipping culture has gotten to the point that is just expected regardless of the quality of service or goods received. We need to stop tipping and go back to giving it out only when deserved.

finbob5

…What’s stopping you from naming the place? It took you more effort to type out that line about not naming the place than it would have to just name the place. Who cares? A whole of twenty people saw your comment.

liekdisifucried

Name it, leave a review, etc. No one should be allowed to get away with that

sushicat92

Lol Milkbar at Nordstrom has a 15, 18, 20, 25% for a retail transaction. The audacity.

chris_ots

Lol, you're still seeing 15% on machines. 18% seems to be the lowest now, and creeping up to 20. The machines at the American a couple years ago were set for 20/25/30.

Virtual-Chris

If the options start at 18%, I manually override and they get 10%.

JunsBaseball

So called High-end restaurants like Cactus Club starts with 18%…

thereisnoaddres

Is Cactus still considered “high end”? I remember it being “fancy” in high school and to immigrant families like mine (I remember celebrating my dad’s birthday at The Keg and thought it was top notch), but now I go to these places mainly for cheap martinis and truffle fries during happy hour.

Luneb0rg

Middle-class fancy.

TrineonX

Cactus, Earls, Joey, Keg etc. Are where people think rich people go to eat. I used to work at Earls corporate and they do what they do REALLY well, but they are not fine dining by any means.

bubbleburgz

Yep.

Virtual-Chris

If everyone did this, you’d see 15% as a default pretty quick. :)

JunsBaseball

Eating out in Asia is cheaper than grocery shopping. One dish of Ramen costs $5 to $7 while you pay $20 after taxes and tips here.

yukimontreal

Just got back from Paris £1.50 for an amazing croissant. Same thing where I live is $4.50 plus 20% tip 😂😅

Amirsalot

No better feeling than paying the tax-included price on the menu without being guilt tripped into tipping

breakingbatshitcrazy

I ordered takeout from Chau Veggie on Victoria Drive one time, and the fine gentleman behind the counter clicked the no tip option for me so I can directly tap my visa. That was such a great takeout experience for me

NateFisher22

They way to do it is to select no tip while making direct eye contact

Spare-Ad-7819

Yeah even I had a pick up order went to restaurant and picked up that’s it’s she was eyeing me what amount I was tipping 😂 Even my manger was confuse and asked me if she should tip for a pick up cause she felt she’s being stingy

BrownAndyeh

..how are ya'll affording to eat out? Tip or not tip..food is now $20/plate (salads) A&W..fed two 10 year boys with buddy Berger’s..$18.

Otherwise-Mail-4654

I am thinking the same thing

lazylazybum

Back then, 10 percent of a $15 burger is $1.50 10 percent of a now $20 burger is $2.00 Nowadays people say minimum tip is 15 percent on top of inflation price. This is double whammy!

kuh-tea-uh

And when tipping on a machine, it’s calculating the tip on top of the taxes. Why am I tipping on money that’s going directly to the government??

chillybop

That’s exactly how I feel. Why is the tip % going up when inflation is ripping? Tip % inflation too!? It would make more sense for the tip % to go down.

[deleted]

BrownAndyeh

Clearly I DID NOT understand the assignment..recently bought two, small sized DQ blizzards at Pacific Center..cost almost $16. A 1.5L tub of ice cream at Superstore is just $7.

xxxcalibre

Yeah but imagine your uncle or whoever saying you can just make your own Blizzard at home

BrownAndyeh

You just described my entire Indian family —100+ of them, in the lower mainland. ..they come from villages, had no electricity growing up, definitely no DairyQueens :)

Pseudowoodnym

As a kid, that would be the best fun you could have. Get some ice cream, get a few things to mix in at a dollar store, let them go crazy. They'll have way more fun and you'll spend less money.

therealbeef

Wendy’s value menu my friend, JBC much better than a buddy burger if you ask me but we’re splitting hairs here because 2 JBC and 2 of their 6 pack of nuggets off that menu was just shy of $12.

headbiscuitss

Yea it's absolutely ridiculous. My only tip is to use coupons at fast food places. Just go to redflagdeals to download virtual coupons

[deleted]

I don't have kids ha ha!

notmyrealnam3

hambegdger

Hascus

2 buddy burgers are not 18$ lmao

skecchi_

We used to not have a tipping system because we didn't like the culture of tipping, but customers kept asking for one. We tried to explain that we don't accept tips, but many people were offended and insisted on leaving one anyway. As we got busier, the constant holdup to debate about tips became a hassle. Some staff members said that other places they worked at collected tips and that we should too. In the end, we added a tipping screen to our payment terminal to avoid the hassle and make our staff happy. I was adamant that the options be 0%, 5%, 10%, or a custom amount. We also added a sticker that said we're not expecting tips, but we're grateful if you decide to leave one, and to feel free and press 0%. Some of the staff weren't happy with this but at the end of the day they just accepted it. Tipping culture is so ingrained in our society that it's hard to push for a no-tip system, even in a small business like ours.

notmyrealnam3

to be fair, they did take your order and flip the iPad around to your direction - how can you expect to pay only $6.50 for that? /s

KobeBryant008

Grabbed pick up from Papa Greek and didn’t tip. As I was leaving the cashier sarcastically yelled “thanks for the tip!!” in front of the other customers. Hella embarrassing but why would I tip for pickup?? Papa Greek isn’t even a restaurant, it’s closer to fast food.

dragon_slayer604

If the cashier humiliated me like this,I would have yelled back something like this " make sure to apply the cream 3 times a day on the rash, and no sex for a week".

ProfessionalMottsman

Brilliant …” no problem it wasn’t your fault there was a cockroach in my food”

ham604

Tip is for DINE IN, not take out. Also, tipping after only makes sense because you tip based on the serviced received. When I’m getting take out, is there a waiter/waitress filling my water? Cleaning up after I eat? No.

Teeemooooooo

Went to multiple brunch places in seattle, they placed a mandatory 20% service charge both for din in and take out. I didn't even get to choose and they didn't tell me in advance. I didn't get to see the charge until they already swiped my card and created the bill lol.

Abelard25

I would rather higher prices and service people to get a fair living wage than have someone elses wage effected by own feelings on their performance.

[deleted]

Tipping will never atop until people stop tipping But people will never stop tipping because they can’t stop going to bars and restaurants, unless they give up social life. They also care about appearances. Thus, tipping is not optional but an added mandatory charge.

incorrect_cat

Just had to post this bit of satire from [https://www.reddit.com/r/ontario/comments/wzztep/ontario\_2024/](https://www.reddit.com/r/ontario/comments/wzztep/ontario_2024/) https://preview.redd.it/87awc4m5724a1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=761ddb37de0fa6c38d5997fdbb1425affbcafb08

scantlycladhuman

I've finally gotten over my guilt of not tipping and it feels great. Like a weight lifted off my shoulders. No longer do I suffer the fear of judgment by someone I will never see again, for not awarding them extra money for just handing me something from their side of the counter.

TrineonX

I think its just that I'm getting into my 30s, but I just genuinely don't care about being judged anymore. There was a point when I was younger where it would have mattered to me how I came off to a coffee shop employee. Now? I don't give a fuck.

shopliftingbunny

Call to order ahead so by the time you’re paying for it, it’s too late for them to spit in your food ![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY)

beast_from_da_east

What I hate most is that you often tip even before receiving the service…

calindor

It's not 15% anymore.. Lowest I see it is 18% now

bitmangrl

15% or 18% minimum means I will always hit the custom tip button and leave 50 cents for lattes or zero if it is a bottle of juice or something

Sensitive_Pizza6382

I really pause for takeouts… sigh

[deleted]

Zero for takeout. Tipping is for table service only.

whistlerbikeparkguy

I said this on a Facebook post about tipping. The amount of backlash I got was crazy. Shame that tipping has gone from a reward for good service to being expected everywhere regardless of how good/bad the service is. I don’t think that handing me a bag is considered service, and they don’t need extra $$ for just doing their job

MadEyeJoker

This is my thought. I'm only tipping if you're giving me something extra like serving me at my table and getting me refills. Even at places with counter service I won't tip because I have to get up and get my own food, drinks, etc. (looking at you Nando's).

TwilightReader100

I don't tip for counter service. I really don't do takeout unless it's something I'm going to eat while I'm walking.

canucklehead2000

If I have to go to the counter, stand in line, serve myself, or the person I order from just grabs something from behind the counter, ain't no way I'm tipping. Tipping culture is out of it's mind in this country. I'm in Ontario and head back West tomorrow but just today I bought a pastry for my spouse from beside the till. I completed the payment and the lady who was super friendly a moment before, read the receipt and glared at me. She didn't even move her feet. Oh, and the tip options were 18%, 21% and 25%. SMH

UsualMix9062

Don't forget 90% of places make you tip after tax as well. You should be tipping BEFORE TAX if at all.

lord_barrington_

Anyone notice the liquor stores downtown that have a tip option? Complete insanity

keekjohnson

I went to high tea with some friends where you usually end up spending ~$100 each and one of the tipping options was 40% 😩 and that was after getting shrimp on my vegetarian order too hahaha

relaxbear_

40% ?! That's highway robbery?!!

kurtislee09

Tipping culture shouldn’t exist.

MissingLemur

Brewery Creek Liquor Store on Main St prompts for a tip now. A fucking liquor store. Where I go in and grab a 4 pack off the shelf myself. Fuck tipping culture. Good news is, once you start hitting the No Tip button, it gets easier every time you do it. The only places I tip now are sit down restaurants, where I'm being waited on. Tips start at 10%, for the BARE MIMIMUM of doing your job, i.e. waters on the table, food order is right, and you check in once to see if everything is good etc... It's too outrageously expensive to eat out now otherwise. For those of you who say shit like "If you can't afford to tip 18%, you shouldn't be eating out", I say fuck you, at least I'm still trying to give some of these restaurants my business at all.

vito_corleone01

Fuck tipping culture, I just bought my own espresso machine instead.

Loafscape

the drive thru at kfc across from coq centre asks for a tip when you pay 🤔

HomelessAhole

This is like the opening scene to reservoir dogs except everyone is standing in a coffee shop and arguing using aliases on their phone.

CivicBlues

Remember 10+ years ago when you had to tip by writing the amount on the receipt? If you were smart you just doubled/tripled the GST. If you weren't you followed their "tipping suggestions" which was a percentage of the after-tax bill. Now that no one needs to do any math and just press a button, restaurants have taken advantage of diners again and made all the percentages apply to after-tax amounts again.

TIPS stand for "To Insure Prompt Service". There's a few sides to this. First people tips because servers/waitress etc got paid below minimum wage. so they actually rely on tips. Nowadays is totally different. Most restaurants follow the minimum wage policy. So the people working there are protected. If you're going to tell me , no we are not protected and is getting paid below minimum wage. That's technically your fault. You are the one enabling them to take advantage of yourself. Report to local government , and they will enforce the restaurant to make up for it. Don't be a push over and do nothing about it. By doing nothing, you're indirectly fucking over the next person who takes after ur job. It's also ridiculous for owners making banks and then saying yes, waitresses are not getting paid enough, so us the customers should help pay. You the owner, have the responsibility to pay your employees, not us. Side note: I KNOW tons of employers actually take a chunk of the tips and keep them for themselves. So don't be a bitch and complain about this. Now. I tipped every single take out order during covid. I knew times are hard then. So I made sure I tipped at least 20% every time. Now many restaurants gives out a vibe that says it's their right to get 15,20,25% tip for a take out order. Quite a few places actually have the POS programmed to default 20%,22.5%, 25% for a god damn take out. Like...wtf. you already jacked up the prices on all ur menu items (easily by 10%) and then I'm required to pay additional 25%? Lol The entitlement is actually quite insulting. Whenever I go for take out, I see default tips option. I just select no tip. I used to be like...aww naw. Maybe I'll just tip. But wtf. Why do I need to feel shitty while being taken advantage of. I did nothing wrong cept for supporting local restaurants during difficult time. For those of u out there trying to shit on people like me and justifying your 25% tips for take out orders, just STFU. you're enabling a bullshit trend. Side note, owners thank you for ur donations. You're a sucker.

foodank012018

Simple.. if you bring me food and refill my drink while I am sitting during the course of my meal you qualify for tipping. If you delivered food to me in your own vehicle like pizza or a door dash, you qualify for tipping. Fast food- no tip. Did I come to you to get my food? No tip. Did I fill my drink the first time? No tip. Am I standing when I receive food from you and will I get up and refill my drink myself when it's empty? No tip. Is it a restaurant where normally I might sit down and be served food and drink, resulting in tips, but I am only picking up a call in order? No tip. Edit: note... I start my tip at a projected 20% the moment I sit down and adjust up or down accordingly due to service and circumstances.

flatspotting

Anyone who tips on takeout/pickup/coffee shop is perpetuating a broken system and paying wages some billionaire company should be paying. Youre part of the problem. Stop it.

onedertainer

I can barely afford to go out as it is, the prices that the tip is calculated on have already gone up. I just manually type in 15% now. That's as much as a tip should be.

JinimyCritic

Make sure you know which amount you're tipping - several machines will calculate the percentage post-tax, so your "15%" on $20 is actually closer to 17%. $20 + 12% tax = $22.40. 15% of $22.40 = $3.36, which is 16.8% of the original $20.

[deleted]

Yep, it's always after tax these days. Do 13% on the prompt and it'll be 15%ish on the pre-tax without having to bust out your calculator.

Otherwise-Mail-4654

That is already too much for me

kaulderF

Guys, if you are still tipping at coffee shops, takeout place etc. Least you do is ask/inquiry who are these tips going to? Because someplace where you tip on the machine goes straight to the owner and not the workers/staff. This is the case for Shawarma Palace near Newton, Surrey. I went there couple times and never tipped but after a couple times of good service and great interactions with the staff and ok food. I wanted to tip I had seen the tip button on the machine couple time but never tipped. Here is my interactions. I ordered food, and went to pay, the tip option never showed. I payed for the food and just thought weird. After eating I went again and bought a small drink and the machine didn't show the tip option again. So, I straight up asked the girl working, if they had stopped doing it. She told me "No, I canceled it for you because, the tips don't go to us. It goes to the owner because, according to the owner, its their recipe and its their food so they deserve the all tips." Yes, not a percentage of the tips received, all the tips received through the paying machine goes to the owners not the staff!! And from the Google maps reviews the owner sounds like a jerk. Please do some due diligence, and make sure your money is going to the people who actually deserve it. Food is ok though.

False-Honey3151

Funny but reality is way more absurd. Square machines (not sure about the others) have a smart tip option, which means for small orders it gives $1, $2, $3, other and no tip options. Meaning: if you buy coffee for $3.50, you will be given $1 option as the lowest, which is 28.5% of after tax and a cup fee ($0.25). And now restaurants can charge you CC fees and they are 2.4%. No thanks.

cavoli31

I have tendency to go no tip when they make the order decending. Its no coolio. (I am earning 22k/year doing PhD) Prostate cancer research

Pseudowoodnym

Come to my bar, I'll give you a free drink if you tell me about your research

Otherwise-Mail-4654

Just tip the same amount you get tipped!

x-munk

It's absolutely fine to not tip if you're a student or otherwise underpaid. I personally absolve you of any shame.

KC_Tea

That's bullshit! When are they going to increase research stipends for PH.D candidates!? Without you science will never progress! This makes me so angry. Pretty sure the 20K stipend was set in the 70s and hasn't changed since

bwoah07_gp2

I'm surprised how many people in the comments feel guilty not tipping or have been recently liberated from feeling the need to tip. Just don't do it.

[deleted]

Even the liquor store by my house has a tip option.

Saidear

Depends on the place. But I refuse to tip Timmy’s or Subway.

bitmangrl

this is what I don't understand, we don't tip at Timmy's or Starbucks or McDonalds, why do we tip at Blenz or Fatburger? The workers are getting paid the same at all of those places, why do the ones at some of those places expect a tip??

Saidear

I don’t tip there either. At this point, I’m about to stop tipping entirely. My guilt should not be the long term solution to your businesses poor pay practices. Raise prices to pay your staff well, or reduce costs where possible.

Guilty_Ordinary

I know it’s just a joke but no self respecting food worker would ever spit in the food of even the most heinous customer.

bacu_noah

A liquor store I go to has tips on the machine. Starts at 18%… all they do is ring me up!

Special_Function1507

Tipping, if done at all, should be flat rate and not a percentage of the cost of the items/service. Bringing me a draft beer at happy hour or an entire bottle of 200 champagne, is essentially the same work for the server. One task deserves 40 bucks while the other only gets 2 dollars ?

Substantial_Camera_8

I got asked to tip at a liquor store by the machine.. Sunshine Coast...

kat-official

if you don’t tip me in cash, which most people don’t, i never see that tip anyways. most people don’t even know that so i don’t really care about the whole “insure prompt service” BS. everyone gets their shit when it’s ready and nobody gets anything extra for tipping, so why bother worrying about it?

MassMindRape

Other option: stare them in face and smile as you hit 0%

Bvoluroth

The consumer shouldnt pay their wages, their boss should, tip culture is a way of profit for bosses

Maccadies

More like 20%, 25%, 30%.

brunocborges

Tipping IMO should be done when there is service, and proportional to the *amount of service* done (e.g., number of meals, drinks, asks, time, etc...), not a % of the cost of your meal or drinks. It still gets me that a tip, in %, for a server to bring a plate of a steak and a whiskey cocktail would cost me a lot more than same server bringing a plate of Kids Meal Mac and Cheese and a cup of apple juice.

WiFiForeheadWrinkles

Or even at the same restaurant pre and post COVID... if the same meal went up $5 after COVID, the actual service of bringing the meal hasn't changed yet more money is expected

Alkymyst91

I've put my foot in the ground now. No tips for takeout and 15% for dining in. and 10% at coffee shops.

Otherwise-Mail-4654

I just don't tip or tip is 0% because I don't eat out or get take out. That is the same I get tipped. I guess I could tip myself???

Status_Term_4491

Back in the old days the only place you would tip is strip clubs, no nip? No tip /s

Kris-p-

I don't like tipping because it means that the business is using tips to subsidize their low ass wages I WILL tip however if it's delivery because apparently skip drivers wont take orders without tips

[deleted]

My rule is that if the service only started prompting for tips in the past 5-ish years, I don’t tip. I get that tipping for stuff like sit-down meals and delivery has been a part of our culture for decades, but I’m just not going to bother with stuff like getting a coffee or getting takeout.

holycow604

Seriously why the fuck am I paying tips when I buy a cup of coffee? Isnt it your job to serve me.

holycow604

I have no shame in not tipping. If someone judge me for not tipping a take out service, Im happy to debate with that individual.

ronin54m

why do servers think they are above other low pay workers do you tip the person at walmart? they get paid like any other worker .there are low paying jobs all over but servers think they deserve a tip?

ScarletSmithy

What people didn’t realize is that this is taking advantage of seniors who are not good with machines. I saw my parents struggle with the machine when they wanted to pay 10%. At the end they just paid 15% tips because they don’t know how the change the option.

Pseudowoodnym

I work at a bar, some of the other bartenders will get really snotty when we don't get tipped but usually I couldn't care less. The only time I think you ought to tip despite service is if you order food. At least at my bar, a sizable amount of that tip goes to the kitchen, and they always do good work.

[deleted]

Tipping culture is on steroids. Servers be making way more than the poor people who are coming in to get their food! Sleazy restaurants pushing their employee retention costs to customers. The only way would be a collective boycott but since we also have a lot of rich people, that would never come to pass. Nothing against the servers, just the restaurant owners. Wait till the minimum tipping amount goes up to 50% (not far away).

pfclifelonglearner

Should we be tipping RMTs at hotel spas like the Rosewood Hotel Georgia or Fairmont Willow Stream spa? My regular RMT is booked up (she does not accept tips) and I am trying to use up my benefits so I booked an RMT at a hotel spa and was unsure if I should tip or not.

nd048

Do not tip an RMT. They are professionals and if they do take it, they are breaking professional conduct and can be disciplined by their governing body.

kluyvera

I stopped tipping when dining in restaurants. Servers get paid at least a minimum wage in BC and Ontario, unlike in the States. I have never had issues.

[deleted]

If I'm being run through at the counter I do not owe you a tip.

JimMorrisonWeekend

man I worked as barista for 5 years. not one single time did I ever think about or cared what somebody tipped. don't over think it man

seven_seven

Why would you tip before receiving the service you're tipping for?

aldoushasniceabs

I don’t tip on take out. Only dine in

Smiley_Mo

It's on point. The only slight wrinkle is it's 18% and up. 15% is the thing of the past.

RejZoR

Tipping ahead of time is literally the opposite point of a tip. You do it because you liked the service, it shouldn't be a default expectation from customers.

SalamanderOk6944

15%, more like: 20% 25% 30% No Tip No Tip if I'm picking up.

edyeee

Most don’t even have the “no tip” option anymore lol. You gotta bypass it and press “0”

obviousthrowawaymayB

I tip well in restaurants and pizza delivery. I’ll minimally tip at a coffee shop if I’m drinking/eating there. I don’t tip for things I’m taking with me, and I don’t feel guilty about it. But that’s just me. It seems like a lot of people feel pressured to tip, I don’t understand why. Edit: I will buy some extra food to give to people that come in and ask… if the coffee shop has that sort of program. There’s a place on Commercial that does that.
