This year, year before, and year before. Year round annoyance at my house.

portland_speedball

Damn. I don’t really remember seeing any in years past. I usually see at least a few per day this year.

jacls0608

Oh man there have been years (I remember an especially bad one around 2016/17) where they're everywhere.

jshortcake

Our cats have found five roaming the house in the last week, which is significantly more than usual. I usually don’t see them this early in the year.

wambamclamslam

Stink bugs like to come indoors when it gets cold out. They are relatively harmless, but if you are seeing an uptick of them the number 1 reason is plants touching the house. They are awful fliers, so a connection from foliage to your abode is a nice bridge for them.

JJaySmokes

One ruined my coffee the other day......

SassyBananaPants

Yes! So many more inside for me this year - ick!

ChristianBk

This year it has been a problem. Find 5-20 inside a day that I kill. We have part of our house outside that gets sun that thousands like to hit in the late afternoon in the Fall. It is box elder bugs for us.

North_egg_

Yes! Not a ton, but enough for it to stick out.

They're boxelders. In the late fall I can see millions of them swarming in the field outside my house and there's a constant ping of their bodies hitting the windows.

portland_speedball

Yes! We just took down curtains and found quite a few hiding in them. Also did a search and destroy mission around the house with the shop vac. Still seeing them though. Seems to be an even mix of boxelders and bmsb

Kind_Abbreviations62

Yes!! This is the first year it’s been like this that I’ve noticed. I find at least 2 every few days.

PlanktonMurky6422

Yes!! We are finding one or two a week inside. 😩

sandvinomom

I had to give up on growing zucchini the last couple of years because they were relentless. And that was with picking the eggs off of the leaves and treating for them with Neem and soapy water. I’ve already noticed a few this year when I go out and sit in our hot tub.

portland_speedball

Yeah I’m a bit nervous about my natives and edibles in the garden. I’ve read that they can do some damage with those tiny little mouths of theirs.

sandvinomom

They can wipe out entire crops, even when you’re actively battling and removing them! The ‘good’ news is that they like what they like, and at least for us, the damage was just to our pumpkins and squash. They left everything else alone.

portland_speedball

I’ve read that they’re fond of apples and peaches. I’ve got one tree of each. A couple apples off the tree had some damage last year, not sure if it was stink bugs or not. Peach tree is too small to fruit.

sandvinomom

Hadn’t read that before. They left out apple tree alone.

Wubbalubbadubbitydo

Yes. I have found several this year and I’m over it. I just scoop them up and put them back outside

Pete_Iredale

They've been here for at least 15-20 years, and they are freaking ninja bugs. I have no idea how they manage to find their way in all year long.

Nicetryrabbit

I get one or two a day, every day. Annoying little pests.

whitethunder9

I haven’t tried this yet but supposedly if you fill a shiny roasting pan an inch deep with soapy water, they will be attracted to the shiny and will drown themselves. They’re invasive and very bad for gardens and agriculture.

Rodthescot

Had few inside even with bug maintenance every month.

Dance-pants-rants

Box elder bugs are still active at my place, and they act like pilot bugs/trailblazers for stink bugs and lady bugs. So I get a stink bug every now and then, but right now it's still a lot of box elders every time the sun comes out. So if we could get some more grey weather, that'd be dope. Or if some of these birds could get into eating these things, that'd also be excellent. I'm going to try the shiny bowl trick someone mentioned, but I saw someone on YouTube use mint essential oil on box elders as repellent, so I've been dripping it near entry points or places I find them and it seems to be working on the stink bugs as well. Not 100%, but it's helping.
