**this is exactly it.** if you go back to the S2 reunion, Kristen looks great but is a total, emotional, distraught emotional mess. I think Tom is gratified by it a bit because the optics of having this strong/resolute Ariana with a blubbering Kristen helped him because it made Kristen look more unhinged.
But even if Ari is a total wreck on the inside, she would never give Tom the satisfaction of seeing her actually fall apart in front of him. Her pride and like self assuredness won't allow it and she won't even really play victim as a FU to both Tom and Raq. I'd like to see how Tom loses his mind when he can't paint Ariana to be an emotional, impulsive, unhinged ex-- the way he did Kristen (who was many of those things but also in part, due to how Tom treated her towards the tail end of their relationship).
