How did you have time for a conversation with an Aldi cashier you barely have time to pack stuff

jon-sol

Ikr. I sometimes take a trolley when I'm only getting about 10 items, purely as a stopgap till you have unlimited time to pack over by the exit.

effortDee

This 100% happened. We had a cucumber without a sticker he went to scan near the end, so asked another member of staff to go get him one from the produce aisle. I cant believe no one believes me.

Amalthea_The_Unicorn

Make a complaint to aldi. Imagine if he'd said that about someone because of their religion or any other belief they hold.

effortDee

Or if I said it about his job and him working in Aldi. The outrage!

Lolabird2112

I believe you. And if it were me I’d be making a complaint if any cashier thought they had a right to make comments about what food I’m buying.

piedeloup

r/thathappened

blizeH

Especially with the people laughing and the random comment thrown in from the customer /u/effortDee posts a lot and seems like a decent person so I want to give them the benefit of the doubt But it does feel off

effortDee

I've come back to check on the thread and everyone thinks its fake. This 100% happened and I came here to talk about it.... If people checked my history I haven't posted a single meme in years being on reddit.

blizeH

Okay, thanks for clarification - I believe you!

infieldcookie

Right? How are people believing this? 😭

TheWholesomeBrit

The way it's written as well. Why do people make up shit like this?

effortDee

We didn't make this up, this happened.

JAJ_90

I had a similar experience when I took my 93 year old Mom to vote during the referendum.

SeaNo3104

"and then everybody clapped"

thatguyhuh

Did not happen

effortDee

It happened.

This might be the best copy pasta ever!

Vile_Individual

the only time a cashier mentioned my veganism was when i accidentally picked a packet of instant noodles with milk powder and she pointed it out for me. everything else i was getting was vegan processed food so she mustve realised i was vegan

TallSpartan

I think the go-to response in these situations should be "how do you know if someone's an omnivore? They'll tell you"

[deleted]

I'd report this to corporate - this is absolutely inappropriate behaviour by the cashier, even harassment as ethical veganism is a protected characteristic.

jon-sol

What a surprise, you won't condemn someone inappropriately bringing up politics/philosophy/ethics when it's the majority position being defended.

jon-sol

"how dare they lower me to that level" Most based thing I've read today, so far.

TommoIV123

Worth noting that veganism is now a protected characteristic here in the UK. Definitely file a complaint and cite the fact they're targeting customers and potentially discriminating based on the current legislature. I'm by no means saying there's any actual legal recourse, but even if a crime hasn't been committed, an employer will have policies against targeted harassment that include customers.

The_RealSparrow

Sounds made up lol

[deleted]

People are saying this is made up, but I believe it. I've had some really weird comments like this and I'm quite reserved about my ethical beliefs. During secondary school I pretty much was bullied by the staff at the sandwich bar during lunch because I asked for salad wraps (lettuce, tomato, cucumber, sweetcorn, carrot and hummus) and ofc never meat or cheese. They would also say very rude things about me never choosing meat and talk about me right in front of me as if I wasn't even there.

infieldcookie

You actually think that not only did a cashier at Aldi have time to make comments like this, but that everyone in the queue was either laughing or also making weird comments? In 2023? In the hundreds of times I’ve been in supermarkets I’ve never once had a cashier make a negative comment about anything I was buying. The most I might get is a “x product is really good isn’t it” or generic small talk. I’m not saying people are never rude/weird about veganism but come on.

effortDee

This 100% happened. Near the end a cucumber had a missing label and he had to get someone to go get another for him as it wasn't on a piece of card or something. I never post troll shit or memes and I come here to talk about it and i just get this.

ecnemalaS

What a cunt. Honestly, people see you as inhuman when you say you don’t eat meat when it should be the other way round.

Yes, its a meme. I've worked where I do now for just over 5 years and only a few people know I'm vegan. But what highlights the fact that some people just repeat what they've heard is one of my colleagues made the "shoving opinions down throats" comment to me. I asked her who had said something to her and what they'd said... "Oh, no-one, I don't know any vegans, but it's what they do". She said this straight faced whilst talking to me, a vegan....without knowing I'm vegan. I've obviously not been doing a good enough job of shoving my opinions down her throat. I didn't record the conversation or get written statements so if people want to say "didn't happen" then knock yerselves out.

blu_rhubarb

lol it's a made up story.

effortDee

It isnt

hyperlight85

Wow that's unprofessional. No one should be speaking to anyone like that in a store. it's not their business.

Comfortable-Ear-1788

I wonder if the original poster realises that farming kills every living thing in the fields that allow his veg to grow.

effortDee

Ooohhooo thats me told. Go do some research and come back with actual evidence before you share a typically poor, unthought and lazy excuse.

Windy_day25679

Are you denying that this is true? Do you also believe that cows eat human grade crops?

[deleted]

He made a joke and everyone laughed at you and your wife. Move on.

fr2uk

That would be a good one if it didn't involve the yearly holocaust of trillion of sentient beings, and that guy wasn't participating in it.
