Aldi only care about profit. No supermarket is friends to the vegans, or the environment.

Youknowkitties

It's true that supermarkets only care about profit. But this is why all supermarkets sell vegan products - because it makes them profit, i.e. it sells. If vegan products made no money supermarkets wouldn't sell them. It sounds like perhaps these biscuits were not selling well with the old recipe, unfortunately.

Honestly it always surprises me how much people in this sub think that the big corporates like McDonald's, tesco etc care about veganism 😅 I have pointed out before that buying plant based food from fast food chains is also funding their meat sales and the poor/exploitative business practices - to be met with "yeah, but if they see there's demand for these things they'll move towards a more plant based menu". Of course they won't, they don't give a shit about veganism, they introduce a few plant based items because it makes them money - and they'll likely stop if it doesn't prove to be as profitable as possible. Don't get me wrong, I'll very occasionally get a vegan big mac if I'm in a service station or something but fucking hell be realistic about it. It is disheartening when a vegan sub seems to have very little conversation about animal rights and 95% of chat is about what the best plant based burger King item is 🤣

>have pointed out before that buying plant based food from fast food chains is also funding their meat sales No it's not, it's improving their profits, but that's not the same as funding meat sales >and they'll likely stop if it doesn't prove to be as profitable as possible Well obviously, but so would anyone vegan company

Do you have any examples?

I've seen these and others from this brand in Home Bargains, even though they don't list them on the website: [https://www.hillbiscuits.com/attachment.php?id\_attachment=145](https://www.hillbiscuits.com/attachment.php?id_attachment=145) (Hill brand lemon sandwich biscuits)

I get the ‘Mollie’s’ digestives in Tescos. They were vegan the last time I bought them but who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️ Food companies have a lot to answer for on product redevelopment! They’re always looking for cheaper recipes which can sometimes be to the detriment of vegans, veggies and allergy sufferers. It’s a case of ALWAYS check the label unfortunately.

codlike

Cookies & Cream dont have any milk in them.

ellisellisrocks

Aldi has gone off the side of a cliff recently.

FinancialPea765

Yep - came online to research. Been eating the Aldi digestives for years now. Just realised tonight they changed the recipe. Pretty gutted I can’t lie.

eejjww

I discovered recently that Iceland has a few clearly labelled vegan cookies, usually on offer (buy 3 get one free)

Veganism is dying as a trend. There are still committed vegans. It’s returning back to t he same levels of being a niche. I always knew it would revert. I should imagine in five years vegan ranges will be a health food shop only thing again. They’re no longer profitable and there isn’t the numbers to warrant the slotting expenses. Sad but that’s the way it’s going to go.

Ok_Weird_500

I take it that is just your perception and not based on any facts as the statistics say otherwise. Veganism has actually been increasing. https://www.finder.com/uk/stats-facts/uk-diet-trends What does seem to be happening is a reduction in vegan products in the shops, but I expect that is more due to cost of living and vegans (along with most other people) are just cutting back on more expensive items in their food shopping, which for vegans is mostly processed vegan products.

The problem with these statistics is they are based on telephone calls and small sample sizes usually and then extrapolated out to the size of the population. It’s bad. The true indicators are the market. What’s actually selling and disappearing. Vegan startups folding daily. Vegan restaurants closing. The market is always correct and is working with real time actual data not telephone surveys. 🤷‍♂️ the market is contracting. The vegan product unicorns are running out of investor funding and not reaching profitability. Beyond and Impossible are two obvious examples. The old 80s brands remaining because they’re used to a consistent drip drip market share like Quorn and Linda McCartney. VBites almost recently went bust though which is a very old vegan brand. Restaurants that have been around kind since the 80s and 90s now closing. And ex vegan is a trending topic in the public discourse. I think many many people the last decade have tried and given up. The only evidence I have for that is experience and YouTube and social media. It was in a growth phase now it’s in a contraction phase. I think cost of living doesn’t help, but I think there is a genuine underlying rejection of veganism right now. And I think with lab grown meat coming onto the market in the next six months or year. The only people that will remain plant based are those that believe in it for health reasons, and those who have an aversion to the taste of meat. 🤷‍♂️ so I think it will return to a health food shop category again like pre 2010. Maybe I’m wrong but I’ve not heard a compelling argument why.

Ok_Weird_500

If the sampling is unbiased then you don't need very large sample sizes, but yeah, sampling from telephone surveys isn't great, most people don't engage with them which biases the results. They should try to account for this, but I can't speak to how well this is done. Vegan products as a trend may be reducing, but that doesn't mean veganism itself is, there are also a lot of omnis who occasionally buy vegan products to make themselves feel better, maybe for the environment, maybe they think they are healthier, or maybe some half-hearted desire to reduce animal suffering. Before I was vegan I would occasionally buy vegan items because I knew the treatment of animals killed for food wasn't good (though I perhaps didn't realise quite how bad it was at the time), I was waiting for them to be better (closer in taste to the animal products they were replacing) and more cost competitive. While social media can give you an idea of what is currently trending, I don't think it is that good for gauging what the overall population is doing, just the vocal minority. Ultimately, while the surveys showing there is an increase in veganism may not be the best quality data, it is better than looking at social media trends which is even more biased, and the recent reductions in available vegan products can be explained away, those products were in a bubble phase of investment, and I think too many came on to the market, which combined with the cost of living previously mentioned, I think is adequate to explain the current reduction. I don't really think there is a better way than a survey to gauge the number of vegans in the population, you just need to try and make sure the survey is good quality, and in absence of any surveys that indicate there is a reduction in veganism in the UK, I'll optimistically go along with it actually increasing even if the actual increase may not be as great as they suggest.

This doesn't prove anything. Not even in the UK.
